Abstract: The propagation of a short laser beam in plasma is investigated analytically Relativistic ponderomotive force and space charge effects are included, and an equation describing the evolution of the laser spot size is derived. It is shown that self-consistent electron cavitation can lead to self channelling and thus long-distance self-focusing of the laser. The condition for the latter to occur is given.

“Long-range Coulomb repulsion effect on a charged vortex in high-temperature superconductors with competing d-wave and antiferromagnetic orders”. Zhao H-W, Zha G-Q, Zhou S-P, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : solid state 78, 064505 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.78.064505
Abstract: Vortex charges in high-temperature superconductor (HTS) are studied by solving the Bogoliubovde Gennes equations based on a model Hamiltonian with antiferromagnetic (AF) and d-wave orders in the presence of the long-range Coulomb repulsion. For a sufficient strength of the AF order, the negative vortex charge is found. A sign change between negative and positive may occur by tuning the long-range Coulomb repulsion strength or the doping parameter. Recent NMR experiments are hopefully understood. We show that the charged vortex can induce a spin-orbit coupling that is important for superconductors with a short coherence length and a large value of the energy gap over the Fermi-level ratio. Fractional flux quanta are possible for HTS.

Abstract: We propose that low-strain Si/O superlattices can be constructed by connecting reconstructed Si{001} surfaces by Si-O-Si bridges. Ab initio calculations show that our models are energetically more favorable than all the models proposed so far. The part of our Si/O superlattice model is experimentally accessible just by oxidizing a Si( 001) substrate. To complete our Si/O superlattice model, we propose a three-step method. We also explore the potential of our Si/O superlattice models for new materials used in future Si electronics. We find that the location of the channel where the carriers travel can be controlled between the interfaces and the Si layers by the insertion of O atoms into the Si-Si dimers. By revealing the origins of the interface electron and hole states, we find that similar interface states should be easily achieved for Si slabs and Si substrates. Interestingly, the interface electrons and holes have small effective masses in the direction parallel to the channel and large effective masses in the direction normal to the channel, which makes the Si/O superlattices attractive to be used for channel materials. We also find that the valley splitting of Si is enhanced by the formation of the Si/O/Si interfaces, which is ideal for developing Si-based qubits. Our findings open new perspectives to design and control the electronic properties of Si.

Abstract: Highly effective IR light-emitting diodes operating at the wavelength 1.66 mu m and based on the buried heterostructure In0.88Ga0.12As0.26P0.74/ In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP have been grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) and characterized in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM),electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electroluminescence measurements. The InGaAsP epilayers are found to be well lattice matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in InGaAsP alloys. A new type of selective CK, gas sensor has been developed and fabricated an the basis of the IR light-emitting diode mentioned above. Especially designed for the remote control of CH4 gas via fibre optics, an integrated optoelectronic readout scheme has been developed and tested, It is shown that the proposed type of sensor can be used for the quantitative remote control of CH4 gas concentration (0.2-100%) via a fibre glass line up to a distance of 2 x 1 km. Abstract: Single-sided fluorination has been predicted to open an electronic band gap in graphene and to exhibit unique electronic and magnetic properties; however, this has not been substantiated by experimental reports. Our comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of this material on a SiC(0001) substrate shows that single-sided fluorographene exhibits two phases, a stable one with a band gap of similar to 6 eV and a metastable one, induced by UV irradiation, with a band gap of similar to 2.5 eV. The metastable structure, which reverts to the stable “ground-state” phase upon annealing under emission of blue light, in our view is induced by defect states, based on the observation of a nondispersive electronic state at the top of the valence band, not unlike that found in organic molecular layers. Our structural data show that the stable C2F ground state has a “boat” structure, in agreement with our X-ray magnetic circular dichroism data, which show the absence of an ordered magnetic phase. A high flux of UV or X-ray photons removes the fluorine atoms, demonstrating the possibility of lithographically patterning conducting regions into an otherwise semiconducting 2D material.

Abstract: SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-delta has been recently discovered as an extremely efficient electrode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). We have performed structural and magnetic studies to fully characterize this multifunctional material. We have observed by powder neutron diffraction (PND) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that its crystal symmetry is better explained with a tetragonal symmetry (I4/mcm space group) than with the previously reported orthorhombic symmetry (Pnma space group). The temperature dependent magnetic properties indicate an exceptionally high magnetic ordering temperature (T-N similar to 750 K), well above room temperature. The ordered magnetic structure at low temperature was determined by PND to be an antiferromagnetic coupling of the Fe cations. Mossbauer spectroscopy corroborated the PND results. A detailed study, with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), in agreement with the Mossbauer results, confirmed the formal oxidation states of the cations to be mixed valence Fe3+/4+ and Mo6+.

Abstract: We study the electron wave packet moving through a bent channel. We demonstrate that the packet transmission probability becomes an asymmetric function of the magnetic field when the electron packet is capacitively coupled to a metal plate. The coupling occurs through a nonlinear potential which translates a different kinetics of the transport for opposite magnetic-field orientations into a different potential felt by the scattered electron.
