Abstract: We describe an experimental distinction between giant vortex and multivortex states in mesoscopic superconducting disks by using two methods: the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method and the temperature dependence of vortex expulsion fields. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical simulations based on the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Abstract: In literature, the experimental validation of a glass edge strength model is lacking. Therefore, in this study, an edge strength model was established and validated. The short-term parameters of the edge strength model, i.e. the flaw geometry and depth, were determined by means of testing at a high stress rate. This was done for polished and cut edges. Next, the strength model, including subcritical crack growth, was established. Finally, the edge strength model was validated by the test results at a low stress rate. The assessed model was found to be slightly conservative, compared to the test results.

Abstract: Highly thermally conductive graphite flakes (Gf)/Si/Al composites have been fabricated using Gf, Si powder and an AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy by an optimized pressure infiltration process for thermal management applications. In the composites, the layers of Gf were spaced apart by Si particles and oriented perpendicular to the pressing direction, which offered the opportunity to tailor the thermal conductivity (TC) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the composites. Microstructural characterization revealed that the formation of a clean and tightly-adhered interface at the nanoscale between the side surface of the Gf and Al matrix, devoid of a detrimental Al4C3 phase and a reacted amorphous AlSiOC layer, contributed to excellent thermal performance along the alignment direction. With increasing volume fraction of Gf from 13.7 to 71.1 vol.%, the longitudinal (i.e. parallel to the graphite layers) TC of the composites increased from 179 to 526 W/m K, while the longitudinal CTE decreased from 12.1 to 7.3 ppm/K (matching the values of electronic components). Furthermore, the modified layers-in-parallel model better fitted the longitudinal TC data than the layers-in-parallel model and confirmed that the clean and tightly-adhered interface is favorable for the enhanced longitudinal TC.

“Ferromagnetism in stacked bilayers of Pd/C60”. Ghosh S, Tongay S, Hebard AF, Sahin H, Peeters FM, Journal of magnetism and magnetic materials 349, 128 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmmm.2013.07.024
Abstract: We provide experimental evidence for the existence of ferromagnetism in bilayers of Pd/C-60 which is supported by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The observed ferromagnetism is surprising as C-60 and Pd films are both non-ferromagnetic in the non-interacting limit. Magnetization (M) versus applied field (H) data acquired at different temperatures (T) show magnetic hysteresis with typical coercive fields (H-c) on the order of 50 Oe. From the temperature-dependent magnetization M(T) we extract a Curie temperature (T-c >= 550 K) using Bloch-like power law extrapolations to high temperatures. Using DFT calculations we investigated all plausible scenarios for the interaction between the C-60 molecules and the Pd slabs, Pd single atoms and Pd clusters. DFT shows that while the C-60 molecules are nonmagnetic, Pd films have a degenerate ground state that subject to a weak perturbation, can become ferromagnetic. Calculations also show that the interaction of C-60 molecules with excess Pd atoms and with sharp edges of a Pd slab is the most likely configuration that render the system ferromagnetic Interestingly, the calculated charge transfer (0.016 e per surface Pd atom, 0.064 e per Pd for intimate contact region) between C-60 and Pd does not appear to play an important role. Abstract: We apply the exact diagonalization technique to calculate the ground and excited states of a bipolar artificial molecule composed of two vertically coupled quantum dots containing different types of carriers electrons and holes in equilibrium. In this system, the magnetic field tunes the relative role of intra-dot Coulomb interaction while the inter-dot separation sets the strength of inter-dot correlations. We find an intricate pattern of the switching of the ground-state angular momentum with increasing magnetic field and a rearrangement of approximate single-particle levels as a function of the inter-dot coupling strength.

Abstract: Ni4Ti3 precipitates with a heterogeneous distribution growing in a polycrystalline Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy have been investigated in a Dual-Beam FIB/SEM system. The volume ratio, mean volume, central plane diameter, thickness, aspect ratio and sphericity of the precipitates in the grain interior as well as near to the grain boundary were measured or calculated. The morphology of the precipitates was classified according to the Zingg scheme. The multistage martensitic transformation occurring in these kinds of samples is interpreted in view of the data of this heterogeneous microstructure of matrix and precipitates.

Abstract: We introduce a differential geometry description of the path lines, stream lines and particles contours in hydrodynamics. We present a generalized form of a Korteweg-de Vries type of equation for the exterior of a circle. Nonlinearities from the boundary conditions, surface tension and the Euler equations are taken into account, but the flow is considered inviscid and irrotational. For the circular case we describe the traveling waves shapes, solitons and the particles trajectories.

Abstract: The impact of interfacial chemistry occurring at dielectric/gate interface of P-MOS and N-MOS devices is reviewed through a quick literature survey. A specific emphasis is put on the way the bond polarization that occurs between a dielectric and a metal substrate impacts on the gate work function. First-principle simulations are then used to study the work function changes induced by dopant aggregation in nickel monosilicide metal gates. It is shown that the changes are a natural consequence of the variation of the interface polarization.

Abstract: This study presents first-principles results on the electronic functionalization of silicene and germanene monolayers by means of chemisorption of adatom species H, Li, F, Sc, Ti, V. Three general adatom-monolayer configurations are considered, each having its distinct effect on the electronic structure, yielding metallic or semiconducting dispersions depending on the adatom species and configuration. The induced bandgap is a (in)direct F gap ranging from 0.2 to 2.3 eV for both silicene and germanene. In general the alternating configuration was found to be the most energetically stable. The boatlike and chairlike conformers are degenerate with the former having anisotropic effective carrier masses. The top configuration leads to the planar monolayer and predominately to a gapped dispersion. The hollow configuration with V adatoms retains the Dirac cone, but with strong orbital planar hybridization at the Fermi level. We also observe a planar surface state the Fermi level for the latter systems. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
