Abstract: We have calculated analytically the spatial distribution of the electric field and current density, and obtained the Joule heat generation rate in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a non-homogeneous magnetic field of a 'chess' configuration. The generation of the Joule heat from the 2DEG is mainly concentrated near the singular corners of each 'chess' field and tends to zero in other corners. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We study the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in bilayer graphene using the Kubo-Greenwood formula. At zero temperature the Hall conductivity sigma(yx) is given by sigma(yx) – 4(N + 1)e(2)/h with N the index of the highest occupied Landau level (LL). Including the dispersion of the LLs and their width, due to e. g. scattering by impurities, produces the plateau of the n = 0 LL in agreement with experimental results on doped samples and similar theoretical results on single-layer graphene plateaus widen with impurity concentration. Further, the evaluated resistivity rho(xx) exhibits a strong, oscillatory dependence on the electron concentration. Explicit results are obtained for delta-function impurities.

Abstract: The magnetic-field dependence of the energy spectrum of GaAs doped with nitrogen impurities is investigated. Our theoretical model is based on the phenomenological band anticrossing model (BAC) which we extended in order to include the magnetic field and electronphonon interaction. Due to the highly localized nature of the nitrogen state, we find that the energy levels are very different from those of pure GaAs. The polaron correction results in a lower cyclotron resonance energy as compared to pure GaAs. The magneto-absorption spectrum exhibits series of asymmetric peaks close to the cyclotron energy ħωc.

Abstract: Transport properties of the 2DEG are studied in the presence of a normal magnetic field B and of a weak, two-dimensional periodic potential modulation. A tight-binding treatment has shown that each Landau level splits into several subbands with exponentially small gaps between them. Assuming the latter are closed due to disorder gives analytical wave functions and simplifies the evaluation of the magnetoresistance tensor p(muv) The relative phase of the oscillations in p(xx) and p(yy) depends on the modulation strengths and periods. For short periods less than or equal to 100 nm, in addition to the Weiss oscillations, the collisional contribution to the conductivity and the corresponding resistivity contribution show prominent peaks when one flux quantum h/e passes through an integral number of unit cells in good agreement with experiments. For periods 300-400 nm long used in early experiments, these peaks occur at fields 10-25 times smaller than those of the Weiss oscillations and are not resolved. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. “MgB2 : superconductivity and pressure effects”. Ivanov VA, Betouras JJ, Peeters FM, , 35 (2003)
Abstract: We present a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a two-band superconductor with emphasis on MgB2. We propose experiments which lead to identification of the possible scenarios: whether both sigma- and pi-bands superconduct or sigma-alone. According to the second scenario a microscopic theory of superconducting MgB2 is proposed based on the strongly interacting or-electrons and non-correlated pi-electrons of boron ions. The kinematic and Coulomb interactions of sigma-electrons provide the superconducting state with an anisotropic gap of s(*)-wave symmetry. The critical temperature T-c has a non-monotonic dependence on the distance r between the centers of gravity of sigma- and pi-bands. The position of MgB2 on a bell-shaped curve T-c (r) is identified in the overdoped region. The derived superconducting density of electronic states is in agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. It is argued that the effects of pressure are crucial to identify the microscopic origin of superconductivity in MgB2. Possibilities for increase of T, are discussed.

Abstract: We present here some of our modeling efforts for PECVD growth of nanostructured carbon materials with focus on amorphous hydrogenated carbon. Experimental data from an expanding thermal plasma setup were used as input for the simulations. Attention was focused both on the film growth mechanism, as well as on the hydrocarbon reaction mechanisms during growth of the films. It is found that the reaction mechanisms and sticking coefficients are dependent on the specific surface sites, and the structural properties of the growth radicals. The film growth results are in correspondence with the experiment. Furthermore, it is found that thin a-C:H films can be densified using an additional H-flux towards the substrate.

Abstract: The modified atomic scattering amplitudes (MASAs) of mixed Ga1-xInxAs, GaAs1-xNx, and InAs1-xNx are calculated using the density functional theory approach and the results are compared with those of the binary counterparts. The MASAs of N, Ga, As, and In for various scattering vectors in various chemical environments and in the zinc-blende structure are compared with the frequently used Doyle and Turner values. Deviation from the Doyle and Turner results is found for small scattering vectors (s<0.3 Å-1) and for these scattering vectors the MASAs are found to be sensitive to the orientation of the scattering vector and on the chemical environment. The chemical environment sensitive MASAs are used within zero pressure classical Metropolis Monte Carlo, finite temperature calculations to investigate the effect of well size on the electron 002 and 220 structure factors (SFs). The implications of the use of the 002 (200) spot for the quantification of nanostructured Ga1-xInxAs systems are examined while the 220 SF across the well is evaluated and is found to be very sensitive to the in-plane static displacements.

Abstract: In this article, we report on the synthesis of thin, epitaxial films of the transparent conductive oxide Al:ZnO on (0001)-oriented synthetic sapphire substrates by DC sputtering from targets with a nominal 1 at.% Al substitution. The deposition was carried out at an unusually low substrate temperature of only 250 °C in argonoxygen mixtures as well as in pure argon. The impact of the processgas composition on the morphology was analysed by transmission electron microscopy, revealing epitaxial growth in all the cases with a minor impact of the process parameters on the resulting grain sizes. The transport properties resistivity, Hall effect and magnetoresistance were studied in the range from 10 to 300 K in DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 T. While the carrier density and mobility are widely temperature independent, we identified a low fieldlow temperature regime in which the magnetoresistance shows an anomalous, negative behaviour. At higher fields and temperatures, the magnetoresistance exhibits a more conventional, positive curvature with increasing field strength. As a possible explanation, we propose carrier scattering at localised magnetic trace impurities and magnetic correlations.

Abstract: Multiply connected mesoscopic: superconductors are considered within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The two coupled nonlinear equations are solved numerically and we investigated the properties of a superconducting ring, two concentric rings, and an asymmetric ring. We find that (i) for a mesoscopic superconducting ring the flux through the hole is not quantized, (ii) two concentric mesoscopic superconducting rings are magnetically coupled and the interaction energy increases with increasing sample thickness, and (iii) in asymmetric rings, a stationary phase slip state is predicted.
