Abstract Recent measurements of the Josephson critical current through LSCO/LCO/LSCO thin films showed an unusually large proximity effect. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a tight-binding Hamiltonian we describe the proximity effect in weak links between a superconductor with critical temperature T-c and one with critical temperature T-c('), where T-c > T-c('). The weak link (N-') is therefore a superconductor above its own critical temperature and the superconducting regions are considered to have either s-wave or d-wave symmetry. We note that the proximity effect is enhanced due to the presence of superconducting correlations in the weak link. The dc Josephson current is calculated, and we obtain a nonzero value for temperatures greater than T-c(') for sizes of the weak links that can be almost an order of magnitude greater than the conventional coherence length. Considering pockets of superconductivity in the N-' layer, we show that this can lead to an even larger effect on the Josephson critical current by effectively shortening the weak link.

Abstract We consider magnetic flux moving in superconductors with periodic pinning arrays. We show that sample heating by moving vortices produces negative differential resistivity (NDR) of both N and S type (i.e., N- and S-shaped) in the voltage-current characteristic (VI curve). The uniform flux flow state is unstable in the NDR region of the VI curve. Domain structures appear during the NDR part of the VI curve of an N type, while a filamentary instability is observed for the NDR of an S type. The simultaneous existence of the NDR of both types gives rise to the appearance of striking self-organized (both stationary and nonstationary) two-dimensional dynamical structures.

Abstract The impact of interfacial chemistry occurring at dielectric/gate interface of P-MOS and N-MOS devices is reviewed through a quick literature survey. A specific emphasis is put on the way the bond polarization that occurs between a dielectric and a metal substrate impacts on the gate work function. First-principle simulations are then used to study the work function changes induced by dopant aggregation in nickel monosilicide metal gates. It is shown that the changes are a natural consequence of the variation of the interface polarization.

Title Modeling of the formation and transport of nanoparticles in silane plasmas Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The behavior of nanoparticles in a low-pressure silane discharge is studied with the use of a self-consistent one-dimensional fluid model. Nanoparticles of a given (prescribed) radius are formed in the discharge by the incorporation of a dust growth mechanism, i.e., by including a step in which large anions (typically Si12H−25), produced in successive chemical reactions of anions with silane molecules, are transformed into particles. Typically a few thousand anions are used for one nanoparticle. The resulting particle density and the charge on the particles are calculated with an iterative method. While the spatial distribution and the charge of the particles are influenced by the plasma, the presence of the nanoparticles will in turn influence the plasma properties. Several simulations with different particle radii are performed. The resulting density profile of the dust will greatly depend on the particle size, as it reacts to the shift of the balance of the different forces acting on the particles.

Abstract The atomic configurations at macrotwin interfaces between microtwinned martensite plates in Ni65Al35 material are investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The observed structures are interpreted in view of possible formation mechanisms for these interfaces. A distinction is made between cases in which the microtwins, originating from mutually perpendicular {110} austenite planes, enclose a final angle larger or smaller than 90degrees. Two different configurations, a crossing and a step type are described. Depending on the actual case, tapering, bending and tip splitting of the smaller microtwinvariants are observed. The most reproducible deformations occur in a region of approximately 5-10 nm width around the interface while a variety of structural defects are observed further away from the interface. These structures and deformations are interpreted in terms of the coalescence of two separately nucleated microtwinned martensite plates and the need to accommodate remaining stresses. Title Modulation-free phase in heavily Pb-doped (Bi,Pb)2212 crystals Type A1 Journal article
Year (down) 2003 Publication Physica: C : superconductivity Abbreviated Journal Physica C
Volume 399 Issue 1/2 Pages 1-7
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract We report the complete disappearance of the structural modulation in heavily lead-doped Bi2-xPbxSr2CaCu2O8+delta crystals observed by transmission electron microscopy. Crystals with a nominal lead content of x = 0.8, corresponding to an effective lead content of x = 0.39, yield the non-modulated phase. The superconducting properties of this modulation-free phase (beta phase) have been studied and compared to those of undoped crystals displaying the modulated phase (alpha phase). Magnetisation measurements reveal that the irreversibility field H-irr(T) and relaxation rates are strongly improved within the beta phase. Measurements of the lower critical field, H-c1, show that the anisotropy factor, epsilon, is considerably reduced in the modulation-free crystals. This is the signature of stronger coupling between CuO2 layers which in turn deeply influences the effectiveness of the pinning. These measurements explain the enhanced pinning properties in moderately Pb-doped crystals in which the alpha phase and beta phase coexist. The enhanced pinning is not only due to the alpha/beta interfaces, which act as effective pinning centers: the emergence of modulation-free domains, characterized by a strongly reduced anisotropy, also significantly contribute to this effect. Abstract The electron distribution function (EDF) in an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) discharge is far from Maxwellian. The self-consistent simulation of ECR discharges requires a calculation of the EDF on every magnetic line for various ion density profiles. The straightforward self-consistent simulation of ECR discharges using the Monte Carlo technique for the EDF calculation is very computer time expensive, since the electron and ion time scales are very different. An electron Boltzmann kinetic equation averaged over the fast electron bouncing and pitch-angle scattering was derived in order to develop an effective and operative tool for the fast modeling (FM) of low-pressure ECR discharges. An analytical solution for the EDF in a loss cone was derived. To check the validity of the FM, one-dimensional (in coordinate) and two-dimensional (in velocity) Monte Carlo simulation codes were developed. The validity of the fast modeling method is proved by comparison with the Monte Carlo simulations. The complete system of equations for FM is presented and ready for use in a comprehensive study of ECR discharges. The variations of plasma density and of wall and sheath potentials are analyzed by solving a self-consistent set of equations for the EDF.
