Title Magnetic-field asymmetry of electron wave packet transmission in bent channels capacitively coupled to a metal gate Type A1 Journal article
Year 2009 Publication Physical review letters Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev Lett
  Volume 102 Issue 6 Pages 066807,1-066807,4
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We study the electron wave packet moving through a bent channel. We demonstrate that the packet transmission probability becomes an asymmetric function of the magnetic field when the electron packet is capacitively coupled to a metal plate. The coupling occurs through a nonlinear potential which translates a different kinetics of the transport for opposite magnetic-field orientations into a different potential felt by the scattered electron.

Abstract The spin interaction and the effective g factor of a magnetic exciton (ME) are investigated theoretically in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) quantum dot (QD), including the Coulomb interaction and the sp-d exchange interaction. At low magnetic field, the ME energy decreases rapidly with increasing magnetic field and saturates at high magnetic field for high Mn concentration. The ground state of the ME exhibits an interesting crossing behavior between sigma(+)-ME and sigma(-)-ME for low Mn concentration. The g(ex) factor of the ME in a DMS QD displays a monotonic decrease with increasing magnetic field and can be tuned to zero by an external magnetic field. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Title Magnetization measurements and Ginzburg-Landau simulations of micron-size \beta-tin samples : evidence for an unusual critical behavior of mesoscopic type-I superconductors Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Physical review letters Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev Lett
  Volume 109 Issue 19 Pages 197003
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We describe investigations of the largely unexplored field of mesoscopic type-I superconductors. Micromagnetometry and 3D Ginzburg-Landau simulations of our single crystal β-tin samples in this regime reveal size- and temperature-dependent supercritical fields whose behavior is radically different from the bulk critical field HcB. We find that complete suppression of the intermediate state in medium-size samples can result in a surprising reduction of the critical field significantly below HcB. We also reveal an evolution of the superconducting-to-normal phase transition from the expected irreversible first order at low temperatures through the previously unobserved reversible first-order to a second-order transition close to Tc, where the critical field can be many times larger than HcB. Finally, we have identified striking correlations between the mesoscopic Hc3 for nucleation of surface superconductivity and the thermodynamic Hc near Tc. All these observations are entirely unexpected in the conventional type-I picture.

Abstract We investigate theoretically the ballistic transport in a two-dimensional electron gas, which is rolled up as a tube and is micro-structured into a Hall bar. A uniform magnetic field applied to such a curved surface results in a non-uniform perpendicular magnetic field. The bend resistances become asymmetric with respect to the orientation of the magnetic field due to the varying magnetic field along the junction. The resistance asymmetry is strongly affected by corrugation due to the varying mobility along different crystallographic directions. We compare our results with a recent transport measurement.

Abstract Ballistic transport of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a rectangle shaped wire, subjected to a local nonhomogeneous magnetic field that results from an in-plane magnetized ferromagnetic (FM) strip deposited above the 2DEG, is investigated theoretically. We found a positive magnetoresistance (MR), which exhibits hysteresis behavior with respect to the direction of the magnetic field sweep, in agreement with a recent experiment. This positive MR can be tuned by applying a gate voltage to the FM strip.

Abstract Using density functional theory, we obtain the mechanical and thermal properties of MX2 monolayers (where M = Cr, Mo, W and X = O, S, Se, Te). The C-centered phonon frequencies (i.e., A(1), A(2)'', E ', and E ''), relative frequency values of A(1), and E ' modes, and mechanical properties (i.e., elastic constants, Young modulus, and Poisson's ratio) display a strong dependence on the type of metal and chalcogenide atoms. In each chalcogenide (metal) group, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with W (O) atom are found to be much stiffer. Consistent with their stability, the thermal expansion of lattice constants for TMDCs with O (Te) is much slower (faster). Furthermore, in a heterostructure of these materials, the difference of the thermal expansion of lattice constants between the individual components becomes quite tiny over the whole temperature range. The calculated mechanical and thermal properties show that TMDCs are promising materials for heterostructures. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract We have developed a microscopic theory which describes the orientational dynamics of C60 molecules in the face-centered-cubic phase of C60 fullerite. The molecular interaction potential and the crystal-field potential are formulated in terms of symmetry-adapted rotator functions. The phase transition to the Pa3BAR structure is driven by an active multipolar mode of T2g symmetry belonging to the l = 10 manifold. The Birman criterion is satisfied. The transition is found to be of first order.

Abstract We develop a model for the tunnel field-effect transistor (TFET) based on the Wentzel-Kramer-Brillouin approximation which improves over existing semi-classical models employing generation rates. We hereby introduce the concept of a characteristic tunneling length in direct semiconductors. Based on the model, we show that a limited density of states results in an optimal doping concentration as well as an optimal material's band gap to obtain the highest TFET on-current at a given supply voltage. The observed optimal-doping trend is confirmed by 2-dimensional quantum-mechanical simulations for silicon and germanium. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4714544]

Abstract We study the properties of a capacitive 13.56 MHz discharge with a mixture of Ar/C2H2 taking into account the plasmochemistry and growth of heavy hydrocarbons. A hybrid model was developed to combine the kinetic description for electron motion and the fluid approach for negative and positive ion transports and plasmochemical processes. A significant change in plasma parameters related to injection of 5.8% portion of acetylene in argon was observed and analyzed. We found that the electronegativity of the mixture is about 30%. The densities of negatively and positively charged heavy hydrocarbons are sufficiently large to be precursors for the formation of nanoparticles in the discharge volume.

Abstract We present model calculations based on a coherent tunneling picture, which reproduce well both the single-particle energy level position and the resonant current strength at two typical anticrossings, one involving two levels and the other three levels in a coherent mixer composed of two weakly coupled vertical quantum dots. An essential ingredient is the inclusion of higher degree terms to account for deviations from an ideal elliptical parabolic confining potential in realistic dots. We also calculate density plots of the mixed states for the modified potential.

We have found that the MP2 contribution from the molecular correlations is responsible for the bound state of the cubane dimer, whereas the Hartree-Fock contribution remains anti-bonding at all intermolecular distances. Starting with two molecules in the standard orientation and centers of mass at (0,0,0) and (0,0,d), respectively, the maximal binding energy is found at d = 5.125 Å and one of the monomers rotated by 45° about the z-axis. This configuration implies that the hydrogen atoms belonging to different monomers tend to repel each other. The results are in agreement with experimental data on the optimal packing of cubane molecules in the solid state.

Abstract A microscopic theory, which describes the orientational dynamics of C60 molecules in the face-centered cubic phase of C60-fullerite, is formulated or the case of a complex molecular structure. Interaction centers which comprise atoms, double bonds, and single bonds as molecular constituents contribute to the intermolecular potential. Orientation dependent physical properties are described in terms of symmetry-adapted rotator functions. It is found that a same set of rotator functions is sufficient even in the case of a complex molecular structure. Phase transition temperatures are discussed for various models of molecular structure.

Abstract First-principle calculations are employed to investigate the interaction of oxygen with ideal and defective MoS2 monolayers. Our calculations show that while oxygen atoms are strongly bound on top of sulfur atoms, the oxygen molecule only weakly interacts with the surface. The penetration of oxygen atoms and molecules through a defect-free MoS2 monolayer is prevented by a very high diffusion barrier indicating that MoS2 can serve as a protective layer for oxidation. The analysis is extended to WS2 and similar coating characteristics are obtained. Our calculations indicate that ideal and continuous MoS2 and WS2 monolayers can improve the oxidation and corrosion-resistance of the covered surface and can be considered as an efficient nanocoating material.   Abstract Since Ehrenfests theorem, the role and importance of classical paths in quantum dynamics have been examined by several means. Along this line, we show that the classical equations of motion provide a solution to quantum dynamics, if appropriately incorporated into the Wigner distribution function, exactly reformulated in a type of Boltzmann equation. Also the quantum-mechanical features of the canonical ensemble can be studied in this framework of Newtonian dynamics, if the initial distribution function is appropriately constructed from the statistical operator.
