Abstract: We explain the basic operation of a nanowire pinch-off FET and graphene nanoribbon tunnelFET. For the nanowire pinch-off FET we construct an analytical model to obtain the threshold voltage as a function of radius and doping density. We use the gradual channel approximation to calculate the current-voltage characteristics of this device and we show that the nanowire pinch-off FET has a subthreshold slope of 60 mV/dec and good ION and ION/IOFF ratios. For the graphene nanoribbon tunnelFET we show that an improved analytical model yields more realistic results for the transmission probability and hence the tunneling current. The first simulation results for the graphene nanoribbon tunnelFET show promising subthreshold slopes.

Abstract: Responses of mesoscopic superconducting rings and disks to perpendicular magnetic fields are studied by using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method, in which transport properties of several small tunnel junctions attached to the sample are measured simultaneously. This allows us for a direct experimental observation of the paramagnetic supercurrent, which is closely related to the paramagnetic Meissner effect. The results are compared with numerical results based on the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Abstract: On the basis of a simplified Hamiltonian for transition metal impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), the nature of ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS are investigated. Ferromagnetism is governed by the Anderson-Hubbard parameter for 3d electrons of Mn2+ and their strong hybridization with the hole carriers in the semiconducting medium. The origin of ferromagnetism in these materials has similarity with the Zener mechanism. From the energetically preferable parallel orientation of Mn spins the Curie temperature is calculated for GaAs:Mn. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: Using the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model, we investigate the effect of sample size and magnitude and homogeneity of external magnetic field on the stability of fractional vortex states in a mesoscopic two-band superconducting disk. We found that each fractional state has a preferable sample size, for which the range of applied field in which the state is stable is pronouncedly large. Vice versa, there exists an optimal magnitude of applied field for which a large range of possible sample radii will support the considered fractional state. Finally, we show that the stability of fractional states can be enhanced even further by magnetic nanostructuring of the sample, i.e. by suitably chosen geometrical parameters and magnetic moment of a ferromagnetic dot placed on top of the superconducting disk. “Orientational charge density waves and the metal-insulator transition in polymerized KC60”. Verberck B, Nikolaev AV, Michel KH, AIP conference proceedings 723, 339 (2004)
Abstract: Polymerized KC60 undergoes a structural phase transition accompanied by a metal-insulator transition around 50 K. To explain the structural aspect, a mechanism involving small orientational deviations of the valence electron density on every C-60 monomer orientational charge density waves (OCDWs) – has already been proposed earlier. In the present work, we address the metal-insulator transition using the OCDW concept. We are inspired by the analogy between a polymer chain exhibiting an OCDW and a linear atomic chain undergoing a static lattice deformation doubling the unit cell: such a deformation implies a band gap at the zone boundary, yielding an insulating state (Peierls instability). Within our view, a similar mechanism occurs in polymerized KC60; the OCDW plays the role of the lattice deformation. We present tight-binding band structure calculations and conclude that the metal-insulator transition can indeed be explained using OCDWs, but that the threedimensionality of the crystal plays an unexpected key role.

Abstract: The interplay between two types of spin-spin exchange interaction (namely of the electron with the Mn-ions and the Mn-ions with each other) that are governed by the positions of the Mn-ions and the magnetic field is studied in the case of a Mn-ion doped CdTe quantum dot. We investigate the formation of different magnetic phases and the existence of frustrated magnetic states due to the dominant contribution of the Mn-Mn energy.
