  Abstract Pb2.85Ba2.15Fe4SnO13, a new n=5 member of the anion-deficient perovskite based AnBnO3n−2 (A=Pb, Ba, B=Fe, Sn) homologous series, was synthesized by the solid state method. The crystal structure of Pb2.85Ba2.15Fe4SnO13 was investigated using a combination of neutron powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It crystallizes in the Ammm space group with unit cell parameters a=5.7990(1) Å, b=4.04293(7) Å and c=26.9561(5) Å. The Pb2.85Ba2.15Fe4SnO13 structure consists of quasi two-dimensional perovskite blocks separated by 1/2[110](1̄01)p crystallographic shear (CS) planes. The corner-sharing FeO6 octahedra at the CS planes are transformed into edge-sharing FeO5 distorted tetragonal pyramids. The octahedral positions in the perovskite blocks between the CS planes are jointly taken up by Fe and Sn, with a preference of Sn towards the position at the center of the perovskite block. The chains of FeO5 pyramids and (Fe,Sn)O6 octahedra of the perovskite blocks delimit six-sided tunnels at the CS planes occupied by double chains of Pb atoms. The compound is antiferromagnetically ordered below TN=368±15 K.

  Abstract In this work, a simple method to measure the indirect band gap of diamond with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is showed. The authors discuss the momentum space resolution achievable with EELS and the possibility of deliberately selecting specific transitions of interest. Based on a simple 2 parabolic band model of the band structure, the authors extend our predictions from the direct band gap case discussed in previous work, to the case of an indirect band gap. Finally, the authors point out the emerging possibility to partly reconstruct the band structure with EELS exploiting our simplified model of inelastic scattering and support it with experiments on diamond.

  Abstract A technique to measure the band gap of dielectric materials with high refractive index by means of energy electron loss spectroscopy (EELS) is presented. The technique relies on the use of a circular (Bessel) aperture and suppresses Cherenkov losses and surface-guided light modes by enforcing a momentum transfer selection. The technique also strongly suppresses the elastic zero loss peak, making the acquisition, interpretation and signal to noise ratio of low loss spectra considerably better, especially for excitations in the first few eV of the EELS spectrum. Simulations of the low loss inelastic electron scattering probabilities demonstrate the beneficial influence of the Bessel aperture in this setup even for high accelerating voltages. The importance of selecting the optimal experimental convergence and collection angles is highlighted. The effect of the created off-axis acquisition conditions on the selection of the transitions from valence to conduction bands is discussed in detail on a simplified isotropic two band model. This opens the opportunity for deliberately selecting certain transitions by carefully tuning the microscope parameters. The suggested approach is experimentally demonstrated and provides good signal to noise ratio and interpretable band gap signals on reference samples of diamond, GaN and AlN while offering spatial resolution in the nm range.   Abstract We report on the preparation of CuBa(2)(Sr(x)Ca(1-x))(n)Cu(n-1)O(y) compounds by fabrication of (Ba,Sr,Ca)CuO(2) superlattices with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). A technique called interval deposition is used to suppress multi-level or island growth resulting in high-quality superlattice structures. Both, the applicability of PLD to atomic engineering as well as the fabrication of artificial superconductors is demonstrated. The (Sr,Ca)CuO(2)-BaCuO(2) superlattices are characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and selected area electron diffraction. The superlattice period has been deduced from electron diffraction patterns and XRD measurements. For Sr containing films, the best growth behavior is observed and films with the highest degree of crystallinity are obtained, whereas superconductivity is only found in less crystalline, Ca containing films. Under some deposition conditions and depending on the amount of Ba containing layers in the superlattice, it was observed that the BaCuO(2) material is converted to Ba(2)CuO(4-delta).   Abstract The existence of the [SrF(0.8)O(0.1)](2.5)[Mn(6)O(12)] = Sr(2.5)Mn(6)O(12.5 – delta)F(2) compound was established in the SrO-Mn(2)O(3)-SrF(2) system at 900A degrees C and p(O(2)) = 1 atm. The electromotive force method with a solid fluorine ion electrolyte was used to refine the composition of fluoromanganite and determine the thermodynamic functions of its formation from phases neighboring in the phase diagram (SrMn(3)O(6), Mn(2)O(3), SrF(2), and oxygen), Delta GA degrees, kJ/mol = -(111.7 +/- 1.9) + (89.5 +/- 1.5) x 10(-3) T.

  Abstract We present a time-dependent parametric model for reactive HiPIMS deposition of films. Specific features of HiPIMS discharges and a possible increase in the density of the reactive gas in front of the reactive gas inlets placed between the target and the substrate are considered in the model. The model makes it possible to calculate the compound fractions in two target layers and in one substrate layer, and the deposition rate of films at fixed partial pressures of the reactive and inert gas. A simplified relation for the deposition rate of films prepared using a reactive HiPIMS is presented. We used the model to simulate controlled reactive HiPIMS depositions of stoichiometric ZrO2 films, which were recently carried out in our laboratories with two different configurations of the O2 inlets in front of the sputtered target. The repetition frequency was 500 Hz at the deposition-averaged target power densities of 5 Wcm−2 and 50 Wcm−2 with a pulse-averaged target power density up to 2 kWcm−2. The pulse durations were 50 μs and 200 μs. Our model calculations show that the to-substrate O2 inlet provides systematically lower compound fractions in the target surface layer and higher compound fractions in the substrate surface layer, compared with the to-target O2 inlet. The low compound fractions in the target surface layer (being approximately 10% at the depositionaveraged target power density of 50 Wcm−2 and the pulse duration of 200 μs) result in high deposition rates of the films produced, which are in agreement with experimental values.

  Abstract The electronic properties of quaternary AlInGaN devices significantly depend on the homogeneity of the alloy. The identification of compositional fluctuations or verification of random-alloy distribution is hence of grave importance. Here, a comprehensive multiprobe study of composition and compositional homogeneity is presented, investigating AlInGaN layers with indium concentrations ranging from 0 to 17 at% and aluminium concentrations between 0 and 39 at% employing high-angle annular dark field scanning electron microscopy (HAADF STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and atom probe tomography (APT). EDX mappings reveal distributions of local concentrations which are in good agreement with random alloy atomic distributions. This was hence investigated with HAADF STEM by comparison with theoretical random alloy expectations using statistical tests. To validate the performance of these tests, HAADF STEM image simulations were carried out for the case of a random-alloy distribution of atoms and for the case of In-rich clusters with nanometer dimensions. The investigated samples, which were grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE), were thereby found to be homogeneous on this nanometer scale. Analysis of reconstructions obtained from APT measurements yielded matching results. Though HAADF STEM only allows for the reduction of possible combinations of indium and aluminium concentrations to the proximity of isolines in the two-dimensional composition space. The observed ranges of composition are in good agreement with the EDX and APT results within the respective precisions.

  Abstract Plasmonic nanostructures and -devices are rapidly transforming light manipulation technology by allowing to modify and enhance optical fields on sub-wavelength scales. Advances in this field rely heavily on the development of new characterization methods for the fundamental nanoscale interactions. However, the direct and quantitative mapping of transient electric and magnetic fields characterizing the plasmonic coupling has been proven elusive to date. Here we demonstrate how to directly measure the inelastic momentum transfer of surface plasmon modes via the energy-loss filtered deflection of a focused electron beam in a transmission electron microscope. By scanning the beam over the sample we obtain a spatially and spectrally resolved deflection map and we further show how this deflection is related quantitatively to the spectral component of the induced electric and magnetic fields pertaining to the mode. In some regards this technique is an extension to the established differential phase contrast into the dynamic regime.

  Abstract By means of electron diffraction the 2 root 2 a(p) x 2 root 2 a(p) phase, well-known in YBa2Cu3O7-delta was observed in two other perovskite-based materials (Y0.75Ce0.25)(2)(Sr0.85Y0.15)(2)AlCU2O9 and Bi1.8Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x. Highly correlated ordering is observed in the ab-plane, the correlation along the c-direction being weak. The plane group of the superstructure symmetry elements was determined on the basis of observed reflection conditions in diffraction patterns. Our results unambiguously rule out oxygen ordering as a possible origin of the superstructure. Experimental evidence points out that the superstructure is associated with the CuO2 layers, that are the only structural elements common to the three compounds studied. A model is proposed where the CuO2 sheet is displacively modulated. Experimental evidence suggests a correlation between adjacent CuO2 sheets. Comparison of simulated and experimental [001] zone diffraction patterns strongly supports our model.

  Abstract YBCO-based materials containing SO4-tetrahedra centered on the Cu(1)-sites of the CuO-chain plane have been examined by means of electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. An incommensurate modulation is observed and attributed to the ordering of b-oriented SO4-rich chains in the Cu(1)-S-O-layer, described in terms of an SO4-concentration wave.

  Abstract Oxygen ordering has been investigated in superconducting ABa2Cu3O7-delta ceramic materials with A = Er, Nd, Sm and Yb, as well as in samples of this type with the rate earth A partially substituted by Pr. The critical temperature T(c) was determined as a function of the oxygen deficiency-delta of the compound and the corresponding microstructures were investigated by electron diffraction and electron microscopy. A distinct relationship exists between the width of the 60 K plateau and the ortho II ordering. Our results show that the ortho II ordered phase is the superconducting phase with a characteristic T(c) of 60 K.

  Abstract The hot working of 5xxx series alloys with Mg ≥3.5 wt% is a concern due to the precipitation of β (Al3Mg2) phase at grain boundaries favoring Inter Granular Corrosion (IGC). The mechanical and corrosion properties of a new 5028-H116 Al-Mg-Sc alloy under various β precipitates distribution is analyzed by imposing different cooling rates from the hot forming temperature (i.e. 325 °C). The mechanical properties are maintained regardless of the heat treatment. However, the different nucleation sites and volume fractions of β precipitates for different cooling rates critically affect IGC. Controlled furnace cooling after the 325 °C heat treatment is ideal in 5028-H116 alloy to reduce susceptibility to IGC after sensitization.

  Abstract Particularly favourable properties of glass ceramics are developed on the basis of two key advantages of these materials: the variation of chemical composition and of microstructure. Therefore, detailed structural and chemical information are necessary to get insight in novel glass ceramic materials. We present here two examples of Er-doped Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2, with different quantities of ZrO2, both obtained with sol-gel synthesis. Different transmission electron microscopy techniques: conventional TEM, HRTEM, and EELS are used and the results are compared with those previously obtained with XRD and Rietveld analysis. We also demonstrate the 3D reconstruction, obtained from HAADF-STEM imaging, to determine the morphology of nanosize precipitates in these composites. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  Abstract Samples of transparent glass-ceramics in the ternary system Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (LAS), with Er2O3 as a luminescent dopant, are investigated. The initial glass is obtained by the classical melting technique. In order to induce ceramization of the glass, TiO2 and ZrO2 are added in small amount as nucleating agents. The thermal treatments at 730 and 770 degrees C are carried out to promote formation of titanium zirconate solid solution precipitates. The spatial distribution of the precipitates in the material, their morphology, and their composition are investigated with TEM, HRTEM, HAADF-STEM, EELS and EFTEM. The results demonstrate that with the glass-melting preparation technique it is possible to achieve small nanoparticles with uniform distribution and higher number density than with the sol-gel glass preparation.

  Abstract Nanocrystalline powders of undoped and lanthanide (Pr3+, Tm3+)- doped gadolinium gallium garnet, Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG), were prepared by propellant synthesis and studied by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), electron diffraction (ED), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and luminescence spectroscopy. The x-ray diffraction patterns of the GGG samples were analysed using the Rietveld method. The Rietveld refinement reveals the existence of two garnet-type phases: both are cubic (space group Ia $(3) over bar $d) with a slightly different lattice parameter and probably a slightly different composition. Electron diffraction and electron microscopy measurements confirm the x-ray diffraction results. EDX measurements for lanthanide-doped samples show that stable solid solutions with composition Gd(3-x)Ln(x)Ga(5)O(12), x approximate to 0.3 ( Ln = Pr; Tm) have been obtained. The luminescence properties of the Tm3+ -doped nanocrystalline GGG samples were measured and analysed.

  Abstract A computational method is presented for angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) and photoelectron diffraction (PED) in the ultraviolet regime. The one-step model is employed and both initial valence and final continuum states are calculated using the finite-cluster, real-space multiple scattering method. Thereby the approach is versatile and provides a natural link to core-level PED. The method is applied to the Cu(111) valence band and good agreement with experiment is found for both ARPES spectra and PED patterns. When the PED patterns are integrated over a filled band of a single-orbital symmetry, such as Cu-3d, we show, both numerically and analytically, that the exact theory with delocalized initial states can be replaced by the much simpler, core-level-type theory where the initial states are taken as localized.

  Abstract <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Heterostructures consisting of semiconductors with controlled morphology and interfaces find applications in many fields. A range of axial, radial, and diameter-modulated nanostructures have been synthesized primarily using vapor phase methods. Here, we present a simple wet chemical routine to synthesize heterostructures of PbTe/Te using Te nanowires as templates. A morphology evolution study for the formation of these heterostructures has been performed. On the basis of these control experiments, a pathway for the formation of these nanostructures is proposed. Reduction of a Pb precursor to Pb on Te nanowire templates followed by interdiffusion of Pb/Te leads to the formation of a thin shell of PbTe on the Te wires. Controlled dewetting of the thin shell leads to the formation of cube-shaped PbTe that is periodically arranged on the Te wires. Using control experiments, we show that different reactions parameters like rate of addition of the reducing agent, concentration of Pb precursor and thickness of initial Te nanowire play a critical role in controlling the spacing between the PbTe cubes on the Te wires. Using simple surface energy arguments, we propose a mechanism for the formation of the hybrid. The principles presented are general and can be exploited for the synthesis of other nanoscale heterostructures.'));

  Abstract Amyloid fibrils, which are closely associated with various neurodegenerative

diseases, are the final products in many protein aggregation pathways. The identification of fibrils at low concentration is, therefore, pivotal in disease diagnosis and development of therapeutic strategies. We report a methodology for the specific identification of amyloid fibrils using chiroptical effects in plasmonic nanoparticles. The formation of amyloid fibrils based on α-synuclein was probed using gold nanorods, which showed no

apparent interaction with monomeric proteins but effective adsorption onto fibril structures via noncovalent interactions. The amyloid structure drives a helical nanorod arrangement, resulting in intense optical activity at the surface plasmon resonance wavelengths. This sensing technique was successfully applied to human brain homogenates of patients affected by Parkinson’s disease,

wherein protein fibrils related to the disease were identified through chiral signals from Au nanorods in the visible and near IR, whereas healthy brain samples did not exhibit any meaningful optical activity. The technique was additionally extended to the specific detection of infectious amyloids formed by prion proteins, thereby confirming the wide potential of the technique. The intense chiral response driven by strong dipolar coupling in helical Au nanorod arrangements allowed us to detect amyloid fibrils down to nanomolar concentrations.
