Abstract: A theoretical framework is described to understand the results of plasmon holography experiments leading to insight in the meaning of the experimental results and pointing out directions for future experiments. The framework is based on the formalism of mutual intensity to describe how coherence is transferred through an optical system. For the inelastic interaction with the object, an expression for the volume. plasmon excitations in a free electron gas is used as a model for the behaviour of aluminium. The formalism leads to a clear graphical intuitive tool for under-standing the experiments. It becomes evident that the measured coherence is solely related to the angular distribution of the plasmon scattering in the case of bulk plasmons. After describing the framework, the special case of coherence outside a spherical particle is treated and the seemingly controversial idea of a plasmon with a limited coherence length obtained front experiments is clarified. Abstract: The intersublevel absorption in n-doped InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum-dot molecules composed of three quantum dots is theoretically considered. The transition matrix elements and the transition energies are found to vary considerably with the spacer thickness. For s polarized light, decreasing the thickness of the spacer between the dots brings about crossings between the transition matrix elements, but the overall absorption is not affected by the variation of the spacer thickness. For p-polarized light and thick spacers, there are no available transitions in the single quantum dot, but a few of them emerge as a result of the electron state splitting in the stacks of coupled quantum dots, which leads to a considerable increase of the transition matrix elements, exceeding by an order of magnitude values of the matrix elements for s-polarized light.

Abstract: Transmission electron microscopy has been applied to study Ti and Al/Ti contacts on GaN and AlGaN/GaN as a function of annealing temperature. This has lead to a profound understanding of the role of Al, both in the contact formation on n-GaN and on AlGaN/GaN. Al in the AlGaN decreases the N-extraction by Ti out of the nitride, because of the strong Al-N bond. Al in the metal bilayer also reduces the N-extraction by Ti due to a preferential alloy mixing.

Abstract: The properties of the shape memory behaviour of Ni-rich binary NiTi are strongly dependant on the thermal history of the material. In this respect the changing of transformation temperatures of the underlying martensitic transformation and the occurrence of multiple step transformations are the most important phenomena. Part of the explanation is found in the presence of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in the B2 matrix after particular heat treatments. The formation of these precipitates changes the Ni concentration of the matrix and induces a strain field, with both of these aspects expected to be of importance. In this work atomic resolution and analytical TEM (transmission electron microscopy) techniques are used to obtain quantitative information concerning these two main features. Furthermore, the known structure of Ni4Ti3 is refined by a least squares optimization of quantitative electron diffraction data. The high-resolution TEM results show that there are strains up to 2% in the matrix surrounding the precipitates and they gradually increase until a maximum is reached when moving away from the interface. Analytical results reveal a global decrease of Ni content in the matrix when sufficient precipitates are present and a gradient in their close vicinity. The refinement of the structure shows atomic displacements, thereby increasing our understanding of the shrinking of the precipitate lattice with respect to the matrix.

Abstract: We study ballistic electron transport through a finite chain of quantum circular rings in the presence of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of strength alpha. The transmission and reflection coefficients for a single ring, obtained analytical lylead to the conductance for a chain of rings as a function of alpha and of the wave vector k of the incident electron. Due to destructive spin interferences the chain can be totaly opaque for certain ranges of k the width of which depends on the value of alpha. A periodic modulation of a widens up the gaps considerably and produces a nearly binary conductance output.

Abstract: Control of the texture and the biaxial alignment of sputter deposited films has provoked a great deal of interest due to its technological importance. indeed, many physical properties of thin films are influenced by the biaxial alignment. In this context, extensive research has been established to understand the growth mechanism of biaxially aligned Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) as a buffer layer for high temperature superconducting copper oxides. In this work, the growth mechanism in general and the mechanism responsible of the biaxial alignment in detail were investigated for thin films of YSZ and TiN deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering using non-aligned polycrystalline stainless steel substrates. The mechanism responsible for the preferential out-of-plane alignment has been investigated by performing depositions on a non-tilted substrate. However, to study the in-plane alignment a tilted substrate was used. The microstructure of the deposited layers was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The crystallographic alignment has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (angular scans and pole figures) and by Selective Area Diffraction (SAD). It was observed that the deposited layers show a zone T or zone II structure and the layers with a zone T structure consist of faceted grains. There seems to be a correlation between the crystal habit of these faceted grains and the measured biaxial alignment. A model for the preferential out-of-plane orientation, the in-plane alignment and the correlation between the microstructure and the biaxial alignment is proposed.
