  Title Uncoupling the solids retention times of flocs and granules in mainstream deammonification : a screen as effective out-selection tool for nitrite oxidizing bacteria Type A1 Journal article
  Year (up) 2016 Publication Bioresource technology Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 221 Issue Pages 195-204
  Keywords A1 Journal article; Engineering sciences. Technology; Sustainable Energy, Air and Water Technology (DuEL)
  Abstract This study focused on a physical separator in the form of a screen to out-select nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) for mainstream sewage treatment. This separation relied on the principle that the NOB prefer to grow in flocs, while anammox bacteria (AnAOB) reside in granules. Two types of screens (vacuum and vibrating) were tested for separating these fractions. The vibrating screen was preferred due to more moderate normal forces and additional tangential forces, better balancing retention efficiency of AnAOB granules (41% of the AnAOB activity) and washout of NOB (92% activity washout). This operation resulted in increased NOB out-selection (AerAOB/NOB ratio of 2.3) and a total nitrogen removal efficiency of 70% at influent COD/N ratio of 1.4. An effluent total nitrogen concentration <10 mg N/L was achieved using this novel approach combining biological selection with physical separation, opening up the path towards energy positive sewage treatment.   Title Used water and nutrients : recovery perspectives in a 'panta rhei' context Type A1 Journal article

  Abstract There is an urgent need to secure global supplies in safe water and proteinaceous food in an eco-sustainable manner, as manifested from tensions in the nexus Nutrients-Energy-Water-Environment-Land. This paper is concept based and provides solutions based on resource recovery from municipal and industrial wastewater and from manure. A set of decisive factors is reviewed facilitating an attractive business case. Our key message is that a robust barrier must clear the recovered product from its original status. Besides refined inorganic fertilizers, a central role for five types of microbial protein is proposed. A resource cycling solution for the extremely confined environment of space habitation should serve as an incentive to assimilate a new user mindset. To achieve the ambitious goal of sustainable food security, the solutions suggested here need a broad implementation, hand in hand with minimizing losses along the entire fertilizer-feed-food-fork chain.   Title Valorization of stainless steel slag by selective chromium recovery and subsequent carbonation of the matrix material Type A1 Journal article
  Year (up) 2016 Publication Journal of cleaner production Abbreviated Journal

  Abstract This study focuses on the recycling of stainless steel (SS) slags containing about 1.2 wt% of chromium (Cr). The selective recovery of Cr from SS slag by a hydrometallurgical method (alkaline pressure leaching) was investigated. Leaching experiments were carried out based on 2(4-1) factorial design of experiment (DOE) with the following parameters: NaOH concentration, temperature, leaching time, and mechanical activation (MA). Results show that temperature and MA are the most influencing factors for an enhanced Cr leaching. The maximum Cr leaching was 46% at 1 M NaOH, 240 degrees C, 6 h, MA 30 min, while the matrix material was dissolved only to a limited extent (Al 2.88%, Si 0.12%, Ca 0.05%). After Cr leaching followed by alkali washing, a carbonation treatment is proposed to stabilize the remaining Cr in the matrix material and make the subsequent recycling of the matrix material as a construction material possible.   Abstract The conformational and configurational preferences of Me2PNSNPMe2 (3) and Me2PNSNAsMe2 (4) have been identified using quantum chemical calculations at the DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G* level of theory. An approach in which energetic, structural (geometries and bond orders), electronic (analysis of the electron density) and spectroscopic properties are combined leads to the conclusion that these sulfur-nitrogen-pnictogen chains share many of the properties of their chalcogen-nitrogen analogues but that the through-space intramolecular interactions favouring the Z,Z configuration are even weaker than in these latter compounds. The results of this analysis also lead to an unambiguous assignment of the variable-temperature 31P and 15N NMR spectra of these compounds and their structures both in solution and in the solid state.

  Abstract <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('The breakthrough of 3D audio has been hampered by the lack of personalized head-related transfer functions (HRTF) required to create realistic 3D audio environments using headphones. In this paper we present a new method for the user to personalize his/her HRTF, similar to the measurement in an anechoic room, yet it is low-cost and can be carried out at home. We compare the resulting HRTFs with those measured in an anechoic room. Subjecting the participants to a virtual localization experiment, we show that they perform significantly better when using their personalized HRTF, compared to a generic HRTF. We believe this method has the potential of opening the way for large scale commercial use of 3D audio through headphones.'));

  Abstract Deep geothermal energy appears to be currently on the edge of a take-off in Belgium. However, the actual emergence of this technology is subject to developments in legislation and incentives from regional governments. Different risk/return expectations across stages of the investment continuum exist and the financial structures that are employed at each stage may require different types of public support. In this context, the ALPI project aims at developing a geological-economic model to calculate the impact of different policy instruments on development of the Belgian geothermal energy sector. Due to the lack of underground information describing the Campine Basin, economic methods are used to deal with these large geological uncertainties.

  Abstract Canola production is an important alternative for agricultural policy-makers in Iran to reduce dependency on the imported vegetable oils. Nevertheless, the canola planted area is only increasing at a slow pace, indicating a low willingness-to-accept of farmers. The general aim of this study was to determine the factors influencing the canola adoption in the Kermanshah Province in Western Iran. Employing stratified random sampling method, 106 farmers from each adopter and non-adopter group were selected. Helping to reach a suitable extensional program, two main categories of variables were defined; i.e. farmers personal characteristics and extension parameters. The analysis of farmers personal characteristics variables revealed that the adopters had larger farms and were younger. The results also show that 80% of the adopters were highly to very highly willing to cultivate canola. Furthermore, a logistic regression model estimated the influence of extensional parameters variables on the canola adoption. According to the regression model, the most effective factors are contact with extension agents and participating in extension classes. As a conclusion, it is suggested that the focus of extension services should be to reduce the distance to agricultural service centers in combination with more contact with extension agents and classes.

  Abstract In this paper the possibilities and limitations of a non-invasive prototype of macroscopic X-ray powder diffraction scanning device employed in transmission and reflection mode are demonstrated. Contrarily to e.g. macroscopic X-ray fluorescence scanners, which gather information on the elemental level, the prototype instrument allows to obtain information on the crystallographic structure of the components. When applied to cultural heritage artefacts, it becomes possible to identify and localize crystalline pigments. Furthermore, it became clear that different information can be available depending on the geometry of the scanner components. In transmission mode information over the entire stratigraphy of the painting is gathered, which is useful to e.g. identify background substrates and major pigments. On the other hand, reflection-XRPD is a surface-sensitive technique and allows the identification of pigments and degradation products located on the surface. The data acquired during both experiments can be presented as two-dimensional distribution maps which show the spatial distribution of every identified pigment. The complementary nature of transmission and reflectionmode makes it possible to gain more insight into the stratigraphy of the painting which is valuable information for conservation and restoration scientists.

  Title Aligning graphene in bulk copper : nacre-inspired nanolaminated architecture coupled with in-situ processing for enhanced mechanical properties and high electrical conductivity Type A1 Journal article

  Abstract Methods used to strengthen metals generally also cause a pronounced decrease in ductility and electrical conductivity. In this work a bioinspired strategy is applied to surmount the dilemma. By assembling copper submicron flakes cladded with in-situ grown graphene, graphene/copper matrix composites with a nanolaminated architecture inspired by a natural nacre have been prepared. Owing to a combined effect-from the bioinspired nanolaminated architecture and improved interfacial bonding, a synergy has been achieved between mechanical strength and ductility as well as electrical conductivity in the graphene/copper matrix composites. With a low volume fraction of only 2.5% of graphene, the composite shows a yield strength and elastic modulus similar to 177% and similar to 25% higher than that of unreinforced copper matrix, respectively, while retains ductility and electrical conductivity comparable to that of pure copper. The bioinspired nanolaminated architecture enhances the efficiencies of two-dimensional (2D) graphene in mechanical strengthening and electrical conducting by aligning graphene to maximize performance for required loading and carrier transporting conditions, and toughens the composites by crack deflection. Meanwhile, in-situ growth of graphene is beneficial for improving interfacial bonding and structural quality of graphene. The strategy sheds light on the development of composites with good combined structural and functional properties. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
