Abstract: The spin interaction and the effective g factor of a magnetic exciton (ME) are investigated theoretically in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) quantum dot (QD), including the Coulomb interaction and the sp-d exchange interaction. At low magnetic field, the ME energy decreases rapidly with increasing magnetic field and saturates at high magnetic field for high Mn concentration. The ground state of the ME exhibits an interesting crossing behavior between sigma(+)-ME and sigma(-)-ME for low Mn concentration. The g(ex) factor of the ME in a DMS QD displays a monotonic decrease with increasing magnetic field and can be tuned to zero by an external magnetic field. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

“MgB2 : superconductivity and pressure effects”. Ivanov VA, Betouras JJ, Peeters FM, , 35 (2003)
Abstract: We present a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a two-band superconductor with emphasis on MgB2. We propose experiments which lead to identification of the possible scenarios: whether both sigma- and pi-bands superconduct or sigma-alone. According to the second scenario a microscopic theory of superconducting MgB2 is proposed based on the strongly interacting or-electrons and non-correlated pi-electrons of boron ions. The kinematic and Coulomb interactions of sigma-electrons provide the superconducting state with an anisotropic gap of s(*)-wave symmetry. The critical temperature T-c has a non-monotonic dependence on the distance r between the centers of gravity of sigma- and pi-bands. The position of MgB2 on a bell-shaped curve T-c (r) is identified in the overdoped region. The derived superconducting density of electronic states is in agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. It is argued that the effects of pressure are crucial to identify the microscopic origin of superconductivity in MgB2. Possibilities for increase of T, are discussed.

Abstract: An experimental and theoretical investigation was made of flux jumps and irreversible magnetization curves of mesoscopic Al superconducting rings. In the small magnetic-field region the change of vorticity with magnetic field can be larger than unity. This behavior is connected with the existence of several metastable states of different vorticities. The intentional introduction of a defect in the ring has a large effect on the size of the flux jumps. Calculations based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model allows us to explain the experimental results semiquantitatively.

Abstract: Multiply connected mesoscopic: superconductors are considered within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The two coupled nonlinear equations are solved numerically and we investigated the properties of a superconducting ring, two concentric rings, and an asymmetric ring. We find that (i) for a mesoscopic superconducting ring the flux through the hole is not quantized, (ii) two concentric mesoscopic superconducting rings are magnetically coupled and the interaction energy increases with increasing sample thickness, and (iii) in asymmetric rings, a stationary phase slip state is predicted.

Abstract: On the basis of a simplified Hamiltonian for transition metal impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), the nature of ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS are investigated. Ferromagnetism is governed by the Anderson-Hubbard parameter for 3d electrons of Mn2+ and their strong hybridization with the hole carriers in the semiconducting medium. The origin of ferromagnetism in these materials has similarity with the Zener mechanism. From the energetically preferable parallel orientation of Mn spins the Curie temperature is calculated for GaAs:Mn. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: An energy level diagram is constructed on the basis of a microscopic Hamiltonian proposed for a description of interacting manganese impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). It is shown that ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS is governed by the strong hybridization of Mn2+-electrons with the mobile holes and localized states near the top of the valence band. The Curie temperature estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with the experiments on GaAs:Mn. The model is also applicable to the GaP:Mn system.

Abstract: The structural and melting properties of a quasi-one dimensional system of charged particles, interacting through a screened Coulomb potential are investigated. Depending on the density and the screening length, the system crystallizes in different lattice structures. The structural phase transitions between them are of first or second order. The melting of the system is studied through Monte Carlo simulations and reentrant behavior as a function of density is observed as well as evidence of anisotropic melting. Abstract: The ordering of N equally charged particles (-e) moving in two dimensions and confined by a Coulomb potential, resulting from a displaced positive charge Ze is discussed. This is a classical model system for atoms. We obtain the configurations of charged particles which, depending on the value of N and Z, may result in ring structures, hexagonal-type configurations, and for N/Z approximate to 1 in an inner structure of particles which is separated by an outer ring of particles. For N/Z << 1, the Hamiltonian of the parabolic confinement case is recovered. For N/Z approximate to 1, the configurations are very different from those found in the case of a parabolic confinement potential. A hydrodynamic analysis is presented in order to highlight the correlations effects.

Abstract: Ballistic spin transport is studied through electronic tuners with double stubs attached to them. The spins precess due to the spin-orbit interaction. Injected polarized spins can exit the structure polarized in the opposite direction. A nearly square-wave spin transmission, with values 1 and 0, can be obtained using a periodic system of symmetric stubs and changing their length or width. The gaps in the transmission can be widened using asymmetric stubs. An additional modulation is obtained upon combining stub structures with different values of the spin-orbit strength. Abstract: We show how snake-orbit states which run along a magnetic edge can be confined electrically. We consider a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined into a quantum wire, subjected to a strong perpendicular and steplike magnetic field B/ − B. Close to this magnetic step, new, spatially confined bound states arise as a result of the lateral confinement and the magnetic-field step. The number of states, with energy below the first Landau level, increases as B becomes stronger or as the wire width becomes larger. These bound states can be understood as an interference between two counter-propagating one-dimensional snake-orbit states.

Abstract: The magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconductors with nonzero thickness is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We calculated the free energy, the expelled field, the total field profile, the Cooper-pair density, and the current density distribution. By putting a smaller superconducting disk or ring in the center of a larger ring, the properties change drastically. Extra ground-state transitions are found, where the total vorticity stays the same, but the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes by 1. Due to the magnetic coupling, the current in the external ring exhibits extra jumps at the transition fields where the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes. In this case, for certain temperatures, re-entrant behavior and switching on and off of the superconducting behavior of the rings are found as a function of the magnetic field. A H-T phase diagram is obtained for the situation where the inner ring has a higher critical temperature than the outer ring. An analytic expression for the magnetic coupling is obtained for thin rings and extreme type-II superconductors.

Abstract: Explicit analytic expressions are obtained for the density of states D(E) and Fermi energy E-F of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a weak and periodic unidirectional electric or magnetic modulation and of a uniform perpendicular magnetic field B. The Landau levels broaden into bands and their width, proportional to the modulation strength, oscillates with B and gives rise to Weiss oscillations in D(E), E-F and the transport coefficients. When both electric and magnetic modulations are present the position of the resulting oscillations depends on the ratio delta between the two modulation strengths. When the modulations are out of phase there is no shift in the position of the oscillations when delta varies and for a particular value of delta the oscillations are suppressed.
