Abstract: The adsorption characteristics of alkali, alkaline-earth, and transition metal adatoms on silicene, a graphene-like monolayer structure of silicon are analyzed by means of first-principles calculations. In contrast to graphene, interaction between the metal atoms and the silicene surface is quite strong due to its highly reactive buckled hexagonal structure. In addition to structural properties, we also calculate the electronic band dispersion, net magnetic moment, charge transfer, work function, and dipole moment of the metal adsorbed silicene sheets. Alkali metals, Li, Na, and K, adsorb to hollow sites without any lattice distortion. As a consequence of the significant charge transfer from alkalis to silicene, metalization of silicene takes place. Trends directly related to atomic size, adsorption height, work function, and dipole moment of the silicene/alkali adatom system are also revealed. We found that the adsorption of alkaline-earth metals on silicene is entirely different from their adsorption on graphene. The adsorption of Be, Mg, and Ca turns silicene into a narrow gap semiconductor. Adsorption characteristics of eight transition metals Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Mo, and W are also investigated. As a result of their partially occupied d orbital, transition metals show diverse structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Upon the adsorption of transition metals, depending on the adatom type and atomic radius, the system can exhibit metal, half-metal, and semiconducting behavior. For all metal adsorbates, the direction of the charge transfer is from adsorbate to silicene, because of its high surface reactivity. Abstract: Over the past several decades the oeuvre of Rembrandt has been the subject of extensive art historical and scientific investigations. One of the most striking features to emerge is his frequent re-use of canvases and panels. The painting An Old Man in Military Costume (78.PB.246), in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, is an example of such a re-used panel. Conventional imaging techniques revealed the presence of a second portrait under the surface portrait, but the details of this hidden portrait have not yet been revealed. Vermilion (HgS) has been identified to have been used nearly exclusively in the flesh tones of the lower painting, suggesting that element-specific XRF imaging might successfully image the hidden portrait. To test this hypothesis, a full-scale mock-up of the painting was created, including a “free impression” of the hidden portrait, reproducing as closely as possible the pigments and paint stratigraphy of the original painting. XRF imaging of the mock-up painting was conducted using three different XRF imaging systems: a mobile X-ray tube based system and two synchrotron-based setups (one equipped with multiple SDDs and one equipped with a Maia detector). The sensitivity, limits of detection and imaging capabilities of each system under the chosen experimental conditions are evaluated and compared. The results indicate that an investigation of the original painting by this method would have an excellent chance of success.

Abstract: We propose a simple way of probing the number of modes contributing to the channeling in graphene waveguides which are formed by a gauge potential produced by mechanical strain. The energy mode structure for both homogeneous and non-homogeneous strain regimes is carefully studied using the continuum description of the Dirac equation. We found that high strain values privilege negative (instead of positive) group velocities throughout the guidance, sorting the types of modes flowing through it. We also show how the effect of a substrate-induced gap competes against the strain.

Abstract: We study Dirac plasmons and their damping in spatially separated N-layer graphene structures at finite doping and temperatures. The plasmon spectrum consists of one optical excitation with square-root dispersion and N – 1 acoustical excitations with linear dispersion, which are undamped at zero temperature and finite doping within a triangular energy region outside the electron-hole continuum. In the long-wavelength limit the energy and weight of the optical plasmon modes increase, respectively, as the square root and linearly with N in agreement with recent experimental findings. The energy and weight of the upper-lying acoustical branches also increase with N. This increase is strongest for the uppermost acoustical mode, and we find that its energy can exceed at some value of momentum the plasmon energy in an individual graphene sheet. Meanwhile, the energy of the low-lying acoustical branches decreases weakly with N as compared with the single acoustical mode in double-layer graphene structures. Our numerical calculations provide a detailed understanding of the overall behavior of the wave-vector dependence of the optical and acoustical multilayer plasmon modes and show how their dispersion and damping are modified as a function of temperature, interlayer spacing, and inlayer carrier density in (un)balanced graphene multilayer structures. Abstract: Grains of K-feldspar are commonly seen as heterogeneous mixtures of mineral species and varieties with random microstructures. Most consider that observable features arise from incomplete re-equilibrations owing to slow kinetic and localized effects of aqueous fluids (catalyst), with geological environment and chemical impurities playing only a secondary role. Here, an alternative approach is explored by studying well-preserved regularities in the twin patterns of K-feldspars formed in the subsolidus stage from a historical perspective. Selected samples from granitic pegmatites were studied by polarized light optical microscopy (PLOM), electron-probe micro-analysis (EPMA), scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cathodoluminescence imaging (CL), micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS) and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We have found that the essential feature of this crystalline medium is the astounding capability to recrystallize in self-organized twin patterns. The mechanism involves coupling between short-range atomic motion, and long-range displacive correlations propagated as ideal and non-ideal Albite and Pericline orientations. We suggest a general evolutionary process to explain the development of macroscopic twin patterns in microcline, based on three twin generations as microtwins, macrotwins and cryptotwins. Evolutionary variants also were identified; they depend on both internal crystallochemical features and an external geological stimulus. We suggest a continuous monoclinictriclinic transformation for impure K-feldspar, whereas a discontinuous inversion occurs where the starting composition is close to the ideal chemical formula. Twin patterns can evolve by twin coarsening to single-orientation microcline if the system releases energy, or by twin fragmentation to finely twinned microcline if the system stores energy. Hence, K-feldspar is seen here as a very sensitive medium in which precious geological information is recorded in the form of twin patterns, and thus useful for general geological challenges.

Abstract: The artificial leaf project calls for new materials enabling multielectron catalysis with minimal overpotential, high turnover frequency, and long-term stability. Is graphene a better material than carbon nanotubes to enhance water oxidation catalysis for energy applications? Here we show that functionalized graphene with a tailored distribution of polycationic, quaternized, ammonium pendants provides an sp(2) carbon nanoplatform to anchor a totally inorganic tetraruthenate catalyst, mimicking the oxygen evolving center of natural PSII. The resulting hybrid material displays oxygen evolution at overpotential as low as 300 mV at neutral pH with negligible loss of performance after 4 h testing. This multilayer electroactive asset enhances the turnover frequency by 1 order of magnitude with respect to the isolated catalyst, and provides a definite up-grade of the carbon nanotube material, with a similar surface functionalization. Our innovation is based on a noninvasive, synthetic protocol for graphene functionalization that goes beyond the ill-defined oxidation-reduction methods, allowing a definite control of the surface properties.

Abstract: The subsurface area introduced during rolling on the 1100 aluminum alloy series alters its surface properties, which makes it more susceptible to corrosion. A combination of different transmission electron microscopy techniques is employed to observe the orientation of small grain structures and the distribution elements in the subsurface layer. This approach provided valuable insight into the formation mechanism of the layer and the phenomena taking place during rolling.

Abstract: We investigate the magnetic interface states of graphene quantum dots that contain p-n junctions. Within a tight-binding approach, we consider rectangular quantum dots in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field containing p-n as well as p-n-p and n-p-n junctions. The results show the interplay between the edge states associated with the zigzag terminations of the sample and the snake states that arise at the p-n junction due to the overlap between electron and hole states at the potential interface. Remarkable localized states are found at the crossing of the p-n junction with the zigzag edge having a dumb-bell-shaped electron distribution. Abstract: Previous investigations about the darkening of chrome yellow pigments revealed that this form of alteration is attributable to a reduction of the original Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and that the presence of sulfur-containing compounds, most often sulfates, plays a key role during this process. We recently demonstrated that different crystal forms of chrome yellow pigments (PbCrO4 and PbCr1xSxO4) are present in paintings by Vincent van Gogh. In the present work, we show how both the chemical composition and the crystalline structure of lead chromate-based pigments influence their stability. For this purpose, oil model samples made with in-house synthesized powders of PbCrO4 and PbCr1xSxO4 were artificially aged and characterized. We observed a profound darkening only for those paint models made with PbCr1xSxO4, rich in SO42 (x ≥ 0.4), and orthorhombic phases (>30 wt %). Cr and S K-edge micro X-ray absorption near edge structure investigations revealed in an unequivocal manner the formation of up to about 60% of Cr(III)-species in the outer layer of the most altered samples; conversely, independent of the paint models chemical composition, no change in the S-oxidation state was observed. Analyses employing UVvisible diffuse reflectance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were performed on unaged and aged model samples in order to obtain additional information on the physicochemical changes induced by the aging treatment.

Abstract: The structural and vibrational properties of two-dimensional hexagonal silicon (silicene) and germanium (germanene) are investigated by means of first-principles calculations. It is predict that the silicene (germanene) structure with a small buckling of 0.44 (0.7 ) and bond lengths of 2.28 (2.44 ) is energetically the most favorable, and it does not exhibit imaginary phonon mode. The calculated non-resonance Raman spectra of silicene is characterized by a main peak at about 575 cm(-1), namely the G-like peak. For germanene, the highest peak is at about 290 cm(-1). Extensive calculations on armchair silicene nanoribbons and armchair germanene nanoribbons are also performed, with and without hydrogenation of the edges. The studies reveal other Raman peaks mainly distributed at lower frequencies than the G-like peak which could be attributed to the defects at the edges of the ribbons, thus not present in the Raman spectra of non-defective silicene and germanene. Particularly the Raman peak corresponding to the D mode is found to be located at around 515 cm(-1) for silicene and 270 cm(-1) for germanene. The calculated G-like and the D peaks are likely the fingerprints of the Raman spectra of the low-buckled structures of silicene and germanene.

Abstract: By using first-principles molecular dynamics, we address the issue of structural stability for the C-60 Ge-m(m) family of doped heterofullerenes through a set of calculations targeting C48Ge12 and C40Ge20. Three kinds of theoretical tools are employed: (a) static structural optimization, (b) a bonding analysis based on localized orbitals (Wannier wavefunctions and centers) and (c) first-principles molecular dynamics at finite temperature. This latter tool allows concluding that the segregated form of C40Ge20 is less stable than its Si-based counterpart. Abstract: Recent advances in manufacturing arrays of artificial pinning sites, i.e., antidots, blind holes and magnetic dots, allowed an effective control of magnetic flux in superconductors. An array of magnetic bars deposited on top of a superconducting film was shown to display different pinning regimes depending on the direction of the in-plane magnetization of the bars. Changing the sign of their magnetization results in changes in the induced magnetic pinning potentials. By numerically solving the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations in a superconducting film with periodic arrays of zigzag-arranged magnetic bars, we revealed various flux dynamics regimes. In particular, we demonstrate flux pinning and flux flow, depending on the direction of the magnetization of the magnetic bars. Remarkably, the revealed different flux-motion regimes are associated with different mechanisms of vortex-antivortex dynamics. For example, we found that for an 'antiparallel' configuration of magnetic bars this dynamics involves a repeating vortex-antivortex generation and annihilation. We show that the depinning transition and the onset of flux flow can be manipulated by the magnetization of the bars and the geometry of the array. This provides an effective control of the depinning critical current that can be useful for possible fluxonics applications.

Abstract: In literature, the experimental validation of a glass edge strength model is lacking. Therefore, in this study, an edge strength model was established and validated. The short-term parameters of the edge strength model, i.e. the flaw geometry and depth, were determined by means of testing at a high stress rate. This was done for polished and cut edges. Next, the strength model, including subcritical crack growth, was established. Finally, the edge strength model was validated by the test results at a low stress rate. The assessed model was found to be slightly conservative, compared to the test results.

Abstract: Globins occur in all kingdoms of life where they fulfill a wide variety of functions. In the past they used to be primarily characterized as oxygen transport/storage proteins, but since the discovery of new members of the globin family like neuroglobin and cytoglobin, more diverse and complex functions have been assigned to this heterogeneous family. Here we propose a function for a membrane-bound globin of C. elegans, GLB-26. This globin was predicted to be myristoylated at its N-terminus, a post-translational modification only recently described in the globin family. In vivo, this globin is found in the membrane of the head mesodermal cell and in the tail stomato-intestinal and anal depressor muscle cells. Since GLB-26 is almost directly oxidized when exposed to oxygen, we postulate a possible function as electron transfer protein. Phenotypical studies show that GLB-26 takes part in regulating the length of the defecation cycle in C. elegans under oxidative stress conditions.
