Abstract: Cost simulations provide a strong tool to render the production of microalgae economically viable. This study evaluated the unexplored effect of harvesting time and the corresponding microalgal biomass composition on the overall production cost, under both continuous light and light/dark regime using techno-economic analysis (TEA). At the same time, the TEA gives evidence that a novel product “proteinaceous salt” from Dunaliella microalgae production is a promising high-value product for commercialization with profitability. The optimum production scenario is to employ natural light/dark regime and harvest microalgal biomass around late exponential phase, obtaining the minimum production cost of 11 €/kg and a profitable minimum selling price (MSP) of 14.4 €/kg for the “proteinaceous salt”. For further optimization of the production, increasing microalgal biomass concentration is the most effective way to reduce the total production cost and increase the profits of microalgae products.

Abstract: This paper benchmarks various epitaxial growth schemes based on n-type group-IV materials as viable source/drain candidates for Ge nMOS devices. Si:P grown at low temperature on Ge, gives an active carrier concentration as high as 3.5 x 10(20) cm(-3) and a contact resistivity down to 7.5 x 10(-9) Omega.cm(2). However, Si:P growth is highly defective due to large lattice mismatch between Si and Ge. Within the material stacks assessed, one option for Ge nMOS source/drain stressors would be to stack Si:P, deposited at contact level, on top of a selectively grown n-SiyGe1-x-ySnx at source/drain level, in line with the concept of Si passivation of n-Ge surfaces to achieve low contact resistivities as reported in literature (Martens et al. 2011 Appl. Phys. Lett., 98, 013 504). The saturation in active carrier concentration with increasing P (or As)-doping is the major bottleneck in achieving low contact resistivities for as-grown Ge or SiyGe1-x-ySnx. We focus on understanding various dopant deactivation mechanisms in P-doped Ge and Ge1-xSnx alloys. First principles simulation results suggest that P deactivation in Ge and Ge1-xSnx can be explained both by P-clustering and donor-vacancy complexes. Positron annihilation spectroscopy analysis, suggests that dopant deactivation in P-doped Ge and Ge1-xSnx is primarily due to the formation of P-n-V and SnmPn-V clusters. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Abstract: By means of density functional theory based first-principles calculations, the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of 1H- and 1T-phases of single-layer CaX2 (X = F, Cl, Br, or I) structures are investigated. Our results reveal that both the 1H- and 1T-phases are dynamically stable in terms of their phonon band dispersions with the latter being the energetically favorable phase for all single-layers. In both phases of single-layer CaX2 structures, significant phonon softening occurs as the atomic radius increases. In addition, each structural phase exhibits distinctive Raman active modes that enable one to characterize either the phase or the structure via Raman spectroscopy. The electronic band dispersions of single-layer CaX2 structures reveal that all structures are indirect bandgap insulators with a decrease in bandgaps from fluorite to iodide crystals. Furthermore, the calculated linear elastic constants, in-plane stiffness, and Poisson ratio indicate the ultra-soft nature of CaX2 single-layers, which is quite important for their nanoelastic applications. Overall, our study reveals that with their dynamically stable 1T- and 1H-phases, single-layers of CaX2 crystals can be alternative ultra-thin insulators.

Abstract: The pores in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be functionalized by placing chemical entities along the backbone and within the backbone. This chemistry is enabled by the architectural, thermal, and chemical robustness of the frameworks and the ability to characterize them by many diffraction and spectroscopic techniques. The pore chemistry of MOFs is articulated in terms of site isolation, coupling, and cooperation and relate that to their functions in guest recognition, catalysis, ion and electron transport, energy transfer, pore‐dynamic modulation, and interface construction. It is envisioned that the ultimate control of pore chemistry requires arranging functionalities into defined sequences and developing techniques for reading and writing such sequences within the pores.

Abstract: As a response to increasing urbanization and changing weather and climatic patterns, urban green infrastructure (UGI) emerged as a concept to increase resilience within the urban boundaries. Given that implementing these (semi-) natural solutions in practice requires a clear overview of the costs and benefits, valuation becomes ever important. A range of decision-support tools for green infrastructure and ecosystem services exist, developed for various purposes. This paper reviews the potential of 10 shortlisted and existing valuation tools to support investment decisions of urban green infrastructure. In the assessment, the functionality is regarded specifically from the urban planning and decision-making viewpoint. The toolkits were evaluated on 12 different criteria. After analyzing the toolkits on these criteria, the findings are evaluated on the (mis)match with specific requirements in the urban planning and management context. Secondly, recommendations and guidelines are formulated to support the design of simple valuation tools, tailored to support the development of green infrastructure in urban areas. Approaching the valuation toolkits biophysically and (socio-)economically provides an integral overview of the challenges and opportunities of the capacities of each framework. It was found that most tools are not designed for the peculiarities of the urban context. Several elements contribute to the hampering uptake of GI valuation tools. Firstly, the limited effort in the economic case for green infrastructure remains a burden to use toolkits to compare grey and green alternatives. Secondly, tools are currently seldom designed for the peculiarities of cities: urban ecosystem (dis)services, multi-scalability, life-span assessments of co-benefits and the importance of social benefits. Thirdly, toolkits should be the result of co-development between the scientific community and local authorities in order to create toolkits that are tailor made to the specific needs in the urban planning process. It can be concluded that current tools, are not readily applicable to support decision making as such. However, if applied cautiously, they can have an indicative role to pinpoint further targeted and in-depth analyses.

Abstract: Topochemical reduction of La0.9Ba0.1MnO3 with NaH at 225 degrees C yields the brownmillerite phase La0.9Ba0.1MnO2.5. However, reduction with CaH2 at 435 degrees C results in the formation of La0.9Ba0.1Mn0.96O2.43 via the deintercalation of both oxide anions and manganese cations from the parent perovskite phase. Electron and neutron diffraction data reveal La0.9Ba0.1Mn0.96O2.43 adopts a complex noncentrosymmetric structure, described in space group I23, confirmed by SHG measurements. Low-temperature neutron diffraction data reveal La0.9Ba0.1Mn0.96O2.43 adopts an ordered magnetic structure in which all the nearest neighbor interactions are antiferromagnetic. However, the presence of ordered manganese cation-vacancies results in a net ferrimagnetic structure with net saturated moment of 0.157(2) mu B per manganese center.

Abstract: The fast-paced urbanization of recent decades entails that many regions are facing seemingly uncontrolled land-use changes (LUCs) that go hand in hand with a range of environmental and socio-economic challenges. In this paper, we use an integrated cellular automata–Markov chain (CA–MC) model to analyze and predict the urban expansion of and its impact on LUC in the city of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. To this end, the research marshals high-resolution Landsat images of 1991, 2002, 2011, and 2018. An analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method is then used to identify the biophysical and socioeconomic factors underlying the expansion in the research area. It is shown that, during the period of study, built-up areas are rapidly expanding in the face of an overall decline of the farmland and vegetation cover. Drawing on a model calibration for 2018, the research predicts the possible geographies of LUC in the Bahir Dar area for 2025, 2034, and 2045. It is predicted that the conversions of other land-use types into built-up areas will persist in the southern, southwestern, and northeastern areas of the sprawling city, which can mainly be traced back to the uneven geographies of road accessibility, proximity to the city center, and slope variables. We reflect on how our findings can be used to facilitate sustainable urban development and land-use policies in the Bahir Dar area.

Abstract: In this study we performed microscopic characterization of mineral particles that were collected in the thorium-rich Fen Complex in Norway and identified and isolated based on autoradiography in function of their radioactivity. For this we combined information obtained with X-ray absorption mu-CT, mu-XRF and mu-XRD, both in bi- and in three-dimensional (tomographic) mode. We demonstrate that radionuclides and metals are heterogeneously distributed both within soil samples and within individual Th-enriched aggregates, which are characterised as low-density mineral bulk particles with high density material inclusions, where Th as well as several metals are highly concentrated. For these sites, it is important to take into account how these inhomogeneous distributions could affect the overall environmental behaviour of Th and progeny upon weathering due to human or environmental factors. Moreover, the estimated size of the Th-containing inclusions as determined in this work represents information of importance for the characterization of radionuclides and toxic metals exposure, as well as for assessing the viability of mining for Th and rare-earth metals in the Fen Complex and the associated environmental impact.

Abstract: A highly efficient photoenergy conversion is strongly dependent on the cumulative cascade efficiency of the photogenerated carriers. Spatial heterojunctions are critical to directed charge transfer and, thus, attractive but still a challenge. Here, a spatially ternary titanium-defected TiO2@carbon quantum dots@reduced graphene oxide (denoted as V-Ti@CQDs@rGO) in one system is shown to demonstrate a cascade effect of charges and significant performances regarding the photocurrent, the apparent quantum yield, and photocatalysis such as H-2 production from water splitting and CO2 reduction. A key aspect in the construction is the technologically irrational junction of Ti-vacancies and nanocarbons for the spatially inside-out heterojunction. The new “spatial heterojunctions” concept, characteristics, mechanism, and extension are proposed at an atomic- nanoscale to clarify the generation of rational heterojunctions as well as the cascade electron transfer.

Abstract: Heterostructures of strongly correlated oxides demonstrate various intriguing and potentially useful interfacial phenomena. LaMnO3/SrMnO3 superlattices are presented showcasing a new high‐temperature ferromagnetic phase with Curie temperature, TC ≈360 K, caused by electron transfer from the surface of the LaMnO3 donor layer into the neighboring SrMnO3 acceptor layer. As a result, the SrMnO3 (top)/LaMnO3 (bottom) interface shows an enhancement of the magnetization as depth‐profiled by polarized neutron reflectometry. The length scale of charge transfer, λTF ≈2 unit cells, is obtained from in situ growth monitoring by optical ellipsometry, supported by optical simulations, and further confirmed by high resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopy. A model of the inhomogeneous distribution of electron density in LaMnO3/SrMnO3 layers along the growth direction is concluded to account for a complex interplay between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers in superlattices.

Abstract: Human activities related to urbanization and industrialization have established a vast territory of urban soil worldwide. On traditional soil maps, urban and industrial areas usually appear as blind spots as they were beyond the interest of national soil survey campaigns. Furthermore, these soil maps are likely already outdated with respect to urban soil due to rapid urban expansion in recent decades. This research aims to evaluate the use of land cover data to estimate the urban soil information gap considering the highly urbanized region of Flanders, Belgium, as a case study. The current extent and spatial distribution of anthropogenic urban soil (1) was estimated through reclassification of recently acquired (2012) exhaustive land cover data, discriminating three qualitative likelihood levels (high-intermediate-low) of anthropogenic influence by urbanization, and (2) compared with its occurrence as represented by the 'Technosols/Not Surveyed area' in the legacy soil map of Belgium, as this map unit best matches with the likelihood for anthropogenic urban soil at the time of the National Soil Survey conducted between end 1940s and mid 1970s. The proposed reclassification of the land cover map resulted in 16.3% and 16.7% of Flanders' total area that corresponds with a high and intermediate likelihood for anthropogenic urban soil, which highlights the underestimation of the anthropogenic urban soil extent as represented by the 'Technosol/Not Surveyed' unit in the legacy soil map (only 13.7%). Moreover, a more realistic spatial pattern of anthropogenic urban soil occurrence was obtained, providing an improved basis for urban soil spatial analysis studies. The produced anthropogenic urban soil likelihood map therefore presents a useful supporting tool for coordinating future soil surveys in urban environments.

Abstract: New zinc naphthalocyanine with bulky 2-naphthyl groups was obtained. Aggregation drastically influences its optical and electrochemical behavior. Spectroelectrochemistry helps to establish the oxidation potential and reveals unusual color change.

Abstract: We investigate experimentally the terahertz (THz) optoelectronic properties of monolayer (ML) tungsten disulfide (WS2) placed on different substrates using THz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS). We find that the THz optical response of n-type ML WS2 depends sensitively on the choice of the substrate. This dependence is found to be a consequence of substrate induced charge transfer, extra scattering centers, and electronic localization. Through fitting the experimental results with the Drude-Smith formula, we can determine the key sample parameters (e.g., the electronic relaxation time, electron density, and electronic localization factor) of ML WS2 on different substrates. The temperature dependence of these parameters is examined. Our results show that the THz TDS technique is an efficient non-contact method that can be utilized to characterize and investigate the optoelectronic properties of nano-devices based on ML WS2.

Abstract: Agricultural cooperatives are seen as an efficient way for smallholder farmers to create bargaining power in order to achieve poverty reduction and food security. However, the success of these cooperatives depends on their ability to maintain their social capital, which is at the core of collective action. A few studies have addressed issues of member participation, commitment, and trust, yet less is known about rural cooperatives in developing countries as a social organization. It is also unclear whether a relationship exists between cooperative size and the incidence of conflict, fraud, and distrust. Using unique data collected from 511 agricultural cooperatives in 12 districts of Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, this paper examines the effects of cooperative size on conflict, fraud, and distrust. We used instrumental variables (IV) probit estimation techniques, accounting for endogeneity of membership size, to confirm that cooperative size does affect the occurrence of conflict, fraud, and trust. The results also indicate that other influencing factors include: cooperative age, number of employees, payment of dividends based on transaction volume, and heterogeneity of member goals.

Abstract: Recently developed beta-metastable Ti grades take advantage of the simultaneous activation of TRIP and TWIP effects for enhancing their work hardening rate. However, the role of each plasticity mechanism on the macroscopic mechanical response is still unclear. In this work, the nucleation mechanism of the first activated plasticity mechanism, namely {112} < 111 > twinning, was investigated. Firstly, post-mortem TEM analysis showed that twins nucleate on pre-existing microstructural defects such as thermal jogs with the zonal dislocation mechanism. The precipitation of the omega phase on twin boundaries has been observed, as well as the emission of numerous dislocations from super-jogs present in these twin boundaries. It is also shown that {112} < 111 > twins act as effective dislocation sources for the subsequent plasticity mechanisms such as beta -> alpha '' martensitic transformation and {332} < 111 > twinning. Secondly, in situ TEM tensile testing of the investigated Ti grade highlighted the primary role of the initial defect configuration present in the microstructure. It is shown that twins cannot nucleate without the presence of specific defects allowing the triggering of the dislocation decomposition needed for the twinning mechanism highlighted in investigated bulk samples.
