“Electron-microscopy investigation of superconducting la2cu(o, f)4+y oxyfluoride”. Weill, Chevalier, Chambon, Tressaud, Darriet, Etourneau, Van Tendeloo G, European journal of solid state and inorganic chemistry 30, 1095 (1993)
Abstract: The fluorination of La2CuO4 can lead to different oxyfluoride compounds depending on the TF2 temperature of the fluorine gas treatment. When 150-degrees-C T(F2) less-than-or-equal-to 200-degrees-c less-than-or-equal-to 200-degrees-C a superconducting material is obtained. Previous neutron diffraction experiments as well as the EXAFS measurements at the La L(III) edge indicate that extra anions lie in an interstitial site between the two (LaO) layers. Electron diffraction patterns clearly show the existence of an incommensurate modulation due to the presence of shear planes. A second phase is also pointed out which can be obtained as a major component when the fluorination temperature is raised to 230-degrees-C. This phase which is not a superconductor crystallizes with the monoclinic symmetry.

“Electron microscopy and mass-spectrometry study of In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38 lasers grown by liquid phase epitaxy”. Luyten W, Volkov VV, van Landuyt J, Amelinckx S, Férauge C, Gijbels R, Vasilev MG, Shelyakin AA, Lazarev VB, Physica status solidi: A: applied research 140, 453 (1993). http://doi.org/10.1002/pssa.2211400216
Abstract: Broad area as well as buried heterostructure lasers based on In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/InP and emitting at 1.3 mum are grown by liquid phase epitaxy and are studied in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, secondary ion mass-spectrometry, and electroluminescence. The InGaAsP epilayer is found to be well lattice-matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in the InGaAsP alloy. We also report on the high performance characteristics of the infrared lasers.

“Electron microscopy and X-ray study of the growth of FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals by chemical vapour transport”. Volkov VV, van Heurck C, van Landuyt J, Amelinckx S, Zhukov EG, Polulyak ES, Novotortsev VM, Crystal research and technology 28, 1051 (1993). http://doi.org/10.1002/crat.2170280804
Abstract: The growth features of FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals prepared by chemical vapour transport were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, electron diffraction and X-ray analysis. Our results indicate that the epitaxial growth of the new phases FeCr7S12 and FeCr8S12, both based on the NiAs structure, can essentially inhibit the growth of large FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals in the octahedral habit. The new phases are fully characterised and the effects of defect ordering in these new phases are also reported.

Abstract: The giant cationic palladium clusters, approximate formula Pd561L60(OAc)180 (L = Dipy, Phen), were characterized by electron diffraction and high resolution microscopy to contain an FCC metal core, most of the larger Pd particles (8 nm) exhibiting multiple twinning, evidence for a distorted icosahedral structure.

Abstract: In Bi2Sr2Ca0.6Y0.4Cu2Oy single crystals we have identified the intergrowth of two phases; a normal Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy type phase with a 4.6b modulation period and a secondary, phase with a 9.4b modulation period. Both the two phases have orthorhombic basic structures with similar lattice parameters but different symmetries, i.e. Bbmb for the normal phase and Ccca for the secondary phase. The c-parameters of these two phases are found to vary independently upon changing the nominal Y content. The modulation characteristics of the secondary phase implies a close structural relation between the two phases. Both phases are discussed from a structural and a compositional point of view.

“In situ high resolution electron microscopy observation of electron-irradiation-induced martensitic transformation in a Ni63Al37 alloy”. Muto S, Schryvers D, Journal of alloys and compounds 199, 1 (1993). http://doi.org/10.1016/0925-8388(93)90422-J
Abstract: An electron-irradiation-induced transformation from cubic beta2 austenite to monoclinic 7M martensite was observed in situ under high resolution electron microscopy conditions in a thin foil of Ni63Al37 beta2 phase (B2, CsCl structure), with the start temperature of the martensitic transformation below but very close to room temperature. The structure of the martensite is consistent with thermoelastic or stress-induced martensite at this composition, including the existence of multiple stacking faults. The transformation is described by a gradual increase in the shear and shuffle amplitudes already existing in the precursor domains. Possible origins of the transformation are discussed.

Abstract: YBCO-based materials containing SO4-tetrahedra centered on the Cu(1)-sites of the CuO-chain plane have been examined by means of electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. An incommensurate modulation is observed and attributed to the ordering of b-oriented SO4-rich chains in the Cu(1)-S-O-layer, described in terms of an SO4-concentration wave.
