Abstract |
It is widely accepted that the physical properties of nanostructures depend on the type of surface facets1, 2. For Au nanorods, the surface facets have a major influence on crucial effects such as reactivity and ligand adsorption and there has been controversy regarding facet indexing3, 4. Aberration-corrected electron microscopy is the ideal technique to study the atomic structure of nanomaterials5, 6. However, these images correspond to two-dimensional (2D) projections of 3D nano-objects, leading to an incomplete characterization. Recently, much progress was achieved in the field of atomic-resolution electron tomography, but it is still far from being a routinely used technique. Here we propose a methodology to measure the 3D atomic structure of free-standing nanoparticles, which we apply to characterize the surface facets of Au nanorods. This methodology is applicable to a broad range of nanocrystals, leading to unique insights concerning the connection between the structure and properties of nanostructures. |

Abstract |
The pinning properties of a superconducting thin film with a square array of blind holes are studied using the nonlinear GinzburgLandau theory. Although blind holes provide a weaker pinning potential than holes (also called antidots), several novel vortex structures are predicted for different size and thickness of the blind holes. Orientational dimer and trimer vortex states as well as concentric vortex shells can nucleate in the blind holes. In addition, we predict the stabilization of giant vortices that may be located both in the pinning centers and/or at the interstitial sites, as well as the combination of giant vortices with sets of individual vortices. For large blind holes, local vortex shell structures inside the blind holes may transfer their symmetry to interstitial vortices as well. The subtle interplay of shell formation and traditional Abrikosov vortex lattices inside the blind holes is also studied for different numbers of trapped vortices. |

Abstract |
Although the search for new zeolites has traditionally been based on trial and error, more rational methods are now available. The theoretical concept of inverse transformation of a zeolite framework to generate a new structure by removal of a layer of framework atoms and contraction has for the first time been achieved experimentally. The reactivity of framework germanium atoms in strong mineral acid was exploited to selectively remove germanium-containing four-ring units from an UTL type germanosilicate zeolite. Annealing of the leached framework through calcination led to the new all-silica COK-14 zeolite with intersecting 12- and 10-membered ring channel systems. An intermediate stage of this inverse transformation with dislodged germanate four-rings still residing in the pores could be demonstrated. Inverse transformation involving elimination of germanium-containing structural units opens perspectives for the synthesis of many more zeolites. |

Abstract |
PECVD of a nanoscale SiO2 capping layer using low pressure SiCl4/O-2/Ar plasmas is numerically investigated. The purpose of this capping layer is to restore photoresist profiles with improved line edge roughness. A 2D plasma and Monte Carlo feature profile model are applied for this purpose. The deposited films are calculated for various operating conditions to obtain a layer with desired shape. An increase in pressure results in more isotropic deposition with a higher deposition rate, while a higher power creates a more anisotropic process. Dilution of the gas mixture with Ar does not result in an identical capping layer shape with a thickness linearly correlated to the dilution. Finally, a substrate bias seems to allow proper control of the vertical deposition rate versus sidewall deposition as desired. |

Abstract |
This paper reports on the incorporation of three commercial fluorescent dyes, i.e., rhodamine 6G, fluorescein, and fluorescent brightener 184, in plasma coatings, by utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor, and the subsequent monitoring of the coatings homogeneity based on the emitted fluorescent light. The plasma coatings are qualitatively characterized with fluorescence microscopy, UVvis spectroscopy and profilometry for the determination of the coating thickness. The emitted fluorescent light of the coating correlates to the amount of dye per area, and deviations of these factors can hence be observed by monitoring the intensity of this light. This allows monitoring the homogeneity of the plasma coatings in a fast and simple way, without making major adjustments to the process. |

Abstract |
We demonstrate that electron irradiation of colloidal CdS nanorods carrying Au domains causes their evolution into AuS/Cd core/shell nanoparticles as a result of a concurrent chemical and morphological transformation. The shrinkage of the CdS nanorods and the growth of the Cd shell around the Au tips are imaged in real time, while the displacement of S atoms from the CdS nanorod to the Au domains is evidenced by high-sensitivity energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. The various nanodomains display different susceptibility to the irradiation, which results in nanoconfigurations that are very different from those obtained after thermal annealing. Such physical manipulations of colloidal nanocrystals can be exploited as a tool to access novel nanocrystal heterostructures. |

Abstract |
he properties of Dirac electrons in a magnetic superlattice (SL) on graphene consisting of very high and thin (δ-function) barriers are investigated. We obtain the energy spectrum analytically and study the transmission through a finite number of barriers. The results are contrasted with those for electrons described by the Schrödinger equation. In addition, a collimation of an incident beam of electrons is obtained along the direction perpendicular to that of the SL. We also highlight an analogy with optical media in which the refractive index varies in space. |

Abstract |
Microstructural investigations with transmission electron microscopy were carried out on quenched Ni-Ti alloys with 52 and 54.5 at% Ni. For the Ni52Ti48 specimen long time exposed diffraction patterns of a single grain show besides the expected reflections of the B2-phase, two sets of extra reflections in different zones. The first type of spots is explained by lattice displacement waves, which are regarded as precursors of the martensitic Ni-Ti phases, B 19' and R-phase, respectively. The second set of reflection with more diffuse intensity than the other reflections is related to Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. For the Ni-richer Ni54.5Ti45.5 alloy only Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation are found but no precursors of the B 19'- and R-phase. |

Abstract |
In this paper, a new implementation of the Metropolis Monte Carlo (MMC) algorithm is presented. When combining the MMC model with a molecular dynamics (MD) code, crystal growth by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition can be simulated. As the MD part simulates impacts of growth species onto the surface on a time scale of picoseconds, the MMC algorithm simulates the slower adatom surface processes. The implementation includes a criterion for the selection of atoms that are allowed to be displaced during the simulation, and a criterion of after how many MMC cycles the simulation is stopped. We performed combined MD-MMC simulations for hydrocarbon species that are important for the growth of ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) films at partially hydrogenated diamond surfaces, since this implementation is part of a study of the growth mechanisms of (ultra)nanocrystalline diamond films. Exemplary for adatom arrangements during the growth of UNCD, the adatom surface behavior of C and C2H2 at diamond (111)1 × 1, C and C4H2 at diamond (111)1 × 1 and C3 at diamond (100)2 × 1 has been investigated. For all cases, the diamond crystal structure is pursued under the influence of MMC simulation. Additional longer time-scale MD simulations put forward very similar structures, verifying the MMC algorithm. Nevertheless, the MMC simulation time is typically one order of magnitude shorter than the MD simulation time. |

Abstract |
The physical processes in an Ar/O2 magnetron discharge used for the reactive sputter deposition of TiOx thin films were simulated with a 2d3v particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) model. The plasma species taken into account are electrons, Ar+ ions, fast Arf atoms, metastable Arm* atoms, Ti+ ions, Ti atoms, O+ ions, O2+ ions, O− ions and O atoms. This model accounts for plasmatarget interactions, such as secondary electron emission and target sputtering, and the effects of target poisoning. Furthermore, the deposition process is described by an analytical surface model. The influence of the O2/Ar gas ratio on the plasma potential and on the species densities and fluxes is investigated. Among others, it is shown that a higher O2 pressure causes the region of positive plasma potential and the O− density to be more spread, and the latter to decrease. On the other hand, the deposition rates of Ti and O are not much affected by the O2/Ar proportion. Indeed, the predicted stoichiometry of the deposited TiOx film approaches x=2 for nearly all the investigated O2/Ar proportions. |

Abstract |
Results are presented of in situ studies of 1 MeV electron irradiation induced (113) defect generation in silicon containing different types and concentrations of extrinsic point defects. A semiquantitative model is developed describing the influence of interfaces and stress fields and of extrinsic point defects on the (113) defect generation in silicon during irradiation. The theoretical results obtained are correlated with experimental data obtained on silicon uniformly doped with boron and phosphorus and with observations obtained by irradiating cross-sectional samples of wafers with highly doped surface layers. It is shown that in situ irradiation in a high voltage election microscope is a powerful tool for studying local point defect reactions in silicon. (C) 1995 The Institute of Materials. |

Abstract |
Depending on the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa, superconductors can either be fully diamagnetic if kappa < 1/root 2 (type I superconductors) or allow magnetic flux to penetrate through Abrikosov vortices if kappa > 1/root 2 (type II superconductors; refs 1,2). At the Bogomolny critical point, kappa = kappa(c) = 1/root 2, a state that is infinitely degenerate with respect to vortex spatial configurations arises(3,4). Despite in-depth investigations of conventional type I and type II superconductors, a thorough understanding of the magnetic behaviour in the near-Bogomolny critical regime at kappa similar to kappa(c) remains lacking. Here we report that in confined systems the critical regime expands over a finite interval of kappa forming a critical superconducting state. We show that in this state, in a sample with dimensions comparable to the vortex core size, vortices merge into a multi-quanta droplet, which undergoes Rayleigh instability(5) on increasing kappa and decays by emitting single vortices. Superconducting vortices realize Nielsen-Olesen singular solutions of the Abelian Higgs model, which is pervasive in phenomena ranging from quantum electrodynamics to cosmology(6-9). Our study of the transient dynamics of Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices in systems with boundaries promises access to non-trivial effects in quantum field theory by means of bench-top laboratory experiments. |

Abstract |
In this review paper, we present several examples of reactive molecular dynamics simulations, which contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms in plasma medicine on the atomic scale. This includes the interaction of important reactive oxygen plasma species with the outer cell wall of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and with lipids present in human skin. Moreover, as most biomolecules are surrounded by a liquid biofilm, the behavior of these plasma species in a liquid (water) layer is presented as well. Finally, a perspective for future atomic scale modeling studies is given, in the field of plasma medicine in general, and for cancer treatment in particular. |

Abstract |
The physical processes in an Ar/N2 magnetron discharge used for the reactive sputter deposition of TiNx thin films were simulated with a 2d3v particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) model. Cathode currents and voltages were calculated self-consistently and compared with experiments. Also, ion fractions were calculated and validated with mass spectrometric measurements. With this PIC/MCC model, the influence of N2/Ar gas ratio on the particle densities and fluxes was investigated, taking into account the effect of the poisoned state of the target. |

Abstract |
Surface chemistry plays a pivotal role in regulating the morphology of nanoparticles, maintaining colloidal stability, and mediating the interaction with target analytes toward practical applications such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based sensing and imaging. The use of a binary ligand mixture composed of 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) to provide gold nanostars with long-term stability is reported. This is despite BDT being a bifunctional ligand, which usually leads to bridging and loss of colloidal stability. It is found however that neither BDT nor CTAC alone are able to provide sufficient colloidal and chemical stability. BDT-coated Au nanostars are additionally used as seeds to direct the encapsulation with a gold outer shell, leading to the formation of unusual nanostructures including semishell-coated gold nanostars, which are characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy and electron tomography. Finally, BDT is exploited as a probe to reveal the enhanced local electric fields in the different nanostructures, showing that the semishell configuration provides significantly high SERS signals as compared to other coreshell configurations obtained during seeded growth, including full shells. |
