Abstract: Electron transport through multiterminal rectangular arrays of quantum rings is studied in the presence of Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and of a perpendicular magnetic field. Using the analytic expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients for single rings we obtain the conductance through such arrays as a function of the SOI strength, of the magnetic flux, and of the wave vector k of the incident electron. Due to destructive or constructive spin interferences caused by the SOI, the array can be totally opaque for certain ranges of k, while there are parameter values where it is completely transparent. Spin resolved transmission probabilities show nontrivial spin transformations at the outputs of the arrays. When pointlike random scattering centers are placed between the rings, the Aharonov-Bohm peaks split, and an oscillatory behavior of the conductance emerges as a function of the SOI strength.

Abstract: 'Natural' platelets are planar defects in {001} planes found in natural type-IaA/B diamonds. 'Man-made' platelets are platelets formed in the laboratory by annealing type-IaA diamonds at temperatures over 2500 degrees C. Careful study shows that the infrared (IR) spectra of the 'man-made' platelets are different from the IR spectra of 'natural' platelets. High-temperature (T greater than or equal to 2000 degrees C) annealing of platelets containing type-IaA/B diamonds modifies the IR absorption spectrum owing to the 'natural' platelets and makes it similar to the IR spectrum of the 'man-made' platelets. It is suggested that such high-temperature annealing changes the structure of the 'natural' platelets. The changes are too subtle to be detected by electron microscopy techniques. Topographic electron-energy-loss spectroscopy shows that platelets contain nitrogen at an average density of 0.7 atoms per a(0)(2); however, high-temperature annealing does not seem to affect the concentration of the nitrogen in the platelets.

Abstract: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods are widely used to investigate wind flow and dispersion in urban environments. Validation with field experiments that represent the full complexity of the problem should be performed to assess the predictive capabilities of the computations. In this context it will be necessary to quantify the effect of uncertainties in simulations of the full-scale problem. The present study aims at quantifying the uncertainty related to the variability in the inflow boundary conditions for Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations of the flow in downtown Oklahoma City to address validation with the Joint Urban 2003 field measurements. Three uncertain inflow parameters were defined: the wind speed and wind direction at a reference height, and the aerodynamic roughness in the logarithmic velocity inlet profile. An ensemble of 729 RANS simulations were performed to determine the polynomial chaos expansion coefficients that define the response surfaces for the velocity magnitude and direction at 13 field measurement stations, and the results are compared to the experimental data. For the velocity magnitude the mean experimental velocity magnitude is encompassed within the 95% confidence interval for the magnitudes predicted by the Uncertainty Quantification study in all stations. For the velocity direction this holds in 11 out of 13 locations. The study demonstrates the significant potential of applying advanced uncertainty quantification methods to address validation with field measurements and to develop a more realistic approach to the definition of inflow boundary conditions in atmospheric CFD simulations. Abstract: The effect of the size of the GaAs barrier and the Ga1−xInxAs well on the structural properties of a Ga1−xInxAs/GaAs multiple quantum well structure is investigated using the Metropolis Monte Carlo approach based on a well-parametrized Tersoff potential. It is found that within the well the Ga-As and In-As bond lengths undergo contractions whose magnitude increases with increasing In content in sharp contrast with bond-length variations in the bulk Ga1−xInxAs systems. For fixed barrier size and In content, the contraction of the bonds is also found to increase with increasing size of the well. Using the local atomic structure of the heterostructures, a more local analysis of the strain state of the systems is given and comparison with the prediction of macroscopic continuum elasticity theory shows deviations from the latter.

Abstract: We report measurements which indicate the appearance of spontaneous vortices in lead superconducting films with embedded magnetic nanoparticles and a temperature-induced phase transition between different vortex phases. Unlike common vortices in superconductors, the vortex phase appears in the absence of applied magnetic field. The vortices nucleate exclusively due to the stray field of the magnetic nanoparticles, which serve the dual role of providing the internal field and simultaneously acting as pinning centers. Transport measurements reveal dynamical phase transitions that depend on temperature (T) and applied field (H) and support the obtained H-T phase diagram.

Abstract: Both even- and odd-numbered neutral carbon clusters Cn (n=210) are systematically studied using the energy minimization method and the modified Brenner potential for the carbon-carbon interactions. Many stable configurations were found, and several new isomers are predicted. For the lowest energy stable configurations we obtained their binding energies and bond lengths. We found that for n5 the linear isomer is the most stable one while for n>5 the monocyclic isomer becomes the most stable. The latter was found to be regular for all studied clusters. The dependence of the binding energy for linear and cyclic clusters versus the cluster size n (n=210) is found to be in good agreement with several previous calculations, in particular with ab initio calculations as well as with experimental data for n=25.

Abstract: In a numerical experiment based on Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, we demonstrate unique topological quantum coherence in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Exploring the fact that vortices in a rotating BEC can be pinned by a geometric arrangement of laser beams, we show the parameter range in which vortex-antivortex molecules or multiquantum vortices are formed as a consequence of the optically imposed symmetry. Being low-energy states, we discuss the conditions for spontaneous nucleation of these unique molecules and their direct experimental observation, and provoke the potential use of the phase print of an antivortex or a multiquantum vortex when realized in unconventional circumstances.

Abstract: Synthetic and naturally occurring forms of tricopper orthotellurate, (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV (the mineral mcalpineite) have been investigated by 3D electron diffraction (3D ED), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopic measurements. As a result of the diffraction analyses, (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV is shown to occur in two polytypes. The higher-symmetric (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-1C polytype is cubic, space group 1a (3) over bar, with a = 9.537 (1) angstrom and V = 867.4 (3) angstrom(3) as reported in previous studies. The 1C polytype is a well characterized structure consisting of alternating layers of (CuO6)-O-II octahedra and both (CuO6)-O-II and (TeO6)-O-VI octahedra in a patchwork arrangement. The structure of the lower-symmetric orthorhombic (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-2O polytype was determined for the first time in this study by 3D ED and verified by Rietveld refinement. The 2O polytype crystallizes in space group Pcca, with a = 9.745 (3) angstrom, b = 9.749 (2) angstrom, c = 9.771 (2) angstrom and V = 928.3 (4) angstrom(3) . High-precision XRPD data were also collected on (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-2O to verify the lower-symmetric structure by performing a Rietveld refinement. The resultant structure is identical to that determined by 3D ED, with unit-cell parameters a = 9.56157 (19) angstrom, b = 9.55853 (11) angstrom, c = 9.62891 (15) angstrom and V = 880.03 (2) angstrom(3) . The lower symmetry of the 2O polytype is a consequence of a different cation ordering arrangement, which involves the movement of every second (CuO6)-O-II and (TeO6)-O-VI octahedral layer by (1/4, 1/4, 0), leading to an offset of (TeO6)-O-VI and (CuO6)-O-II octahedra in every second layer giving an ABAB* stacking arrangement. Syntheses of (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV showed that low-temperature (473 K) hydrothermal conditions generally produce the 2O polytype. XRPD measurements in combination with Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that most natural mcalpineite is the orthorhombic 2O polytype. Both XRPD and Raman spectroscopy measurements may be used to differentiate between the two polytypes of (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV. In Raman spectroscopy, (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-1C has a single strong band around 730 cm(-1), whereas (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-2O shows a broad double maximum with bands centred around 692 and 742 cm(-1).

Abstract: We evaluate the electronic transmission and conductance in bilayer graphene through a finite number of potential barriers. Further, we evaluate the dispersion relation in a bilayer graphene superlattice with a periodic potential applied to both layers. As a model we use the tight-binding Hamiltonian in the continuum approximation. For zero bias the dispersion relation shows a finite gap for carriers with zero momentum in the direction parallel to the barriers. This is in contrast to single-layer graphene where no such gap was found. A gap also appears for a finite bias. Numerical results for the energy spectrum, conductance, and the density of states are presented and contrasted with those pertaining to single-layer graphene.

Abstract: We study theoretically the simultaneous effect of regular and random pinning potentials on the vortex lattice structure at filling factor of 1. This structure is determined by a competition between the square symmetry of regular pinning array, by the intervortex interaction favoring a triangular symmetry, and by the randomness trying to depin vortices from their regular positions. Both analytical and molecular-dynamics approaches are used. We construct a phase diagram of the system in the plane of regular and random pinning strengths and determine typical vortex lattice defects appearing in the system due to the disorder. We find that the total disordering of the vortex lattice can occur either in one step or in two steps. For instance, in the limit of weak pinning, a square lattice of pinned vortices is destroyed in two steps. First, elastic chains of depinned vortices appear in the film; but the vortex lattice as a whole remains still pinned by the underlying square array of regular pinning sites. These chains are composed into fractal-like structures. In a second step, domains of totally depinned vortices are generated and the vortex lattice depins from regular array.

Abstract: Coupled shallow impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire and in a semiconductor nanowire surrounded by a metallic gate are studied within the effective-mass approximation. Bonding and antibonding states are found due to the coupling of the two impurities, and their energy converges with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependences of the binding energy on the wire radius R, the distance di between the two impurities, and the impurity radial position in the nanowire are examined.

Abstract: A perpendicular electric field applied to multilayers of graphene modifies the electronic structure near the K point and may induce an energy gap in the electronic spectrum. This gap is tunable by the gate voltage and its size depends on the number of layers. We use a tight-binding approach to calculate the band structure and include a self-consistent calculation in order to obtain the density of charge carriers. Results are presented for systems consisting of three and four layers of graphene. The effect of the circular asymmetry of the band structure on the gap is critically examined.

Abstract: An epitaxially grown heterostructure consisting of alternating layers of LaMnO3 (8 unit cells) and SrMnO3 (4 unit cells) on a SrTiO3 substrate has been studied by a combination of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) on an atomic scale. Excitation edges of all elements are captured with subnanometer spatial accuracy, and parametrized to obtain chemical profiles. The fine-edge structure of O K and Mn L-2,L-3 edges are interpreted as signatures of the local electronic structure and show a spatial modulation of the concentration of holes with O 2p character. The chemical concentration is found to be different for the bottom and top interface of a SrMnO3 layer. HRTEM complements the EELS results and confirms the asymmetry of the interfaces.
