Title Kinetic modeling of relaxation phenomena after photodetachment in a rf electronegative SiH4 discharge Type A1 Journal article
Year 2001 Publication Physical review : E : statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev E

Abstract The global relaxation process after pulsed laser induced photodetachment in a rf electronegative SIH4 discharge is studied by a self-consistent kinetic one-dimensional particle-in-cell-Monte Carlo model. Our results reveal a comprehensive physical picture of the relaxation process, including the main plasma variables, after a perturbation up to the full recovery of the steady state. A strong influence of the photodetachment on the discharge is found, which results from an increase of the electron density, leading to a weaker bulk field, and hence to a drop in the high energy tail of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF), a reduction of the reaction rates of electron impact attachment and ionization, and a subsequent decrease of the positive and negative ion densities. All the plasma quantities related to electrons recover synchronously. The recovery time of the ion densities is about 1-2 orders of magnitude longer than that of the electrons due to different recovery mechanisms. The modeled behavior of all the charged particles agrees very well with experimental results from the literature. In addition, our work clarifies some unclear processes assumed in the literature, such as the relaxation of the EEDF, the evolution of the electric field, and the recovery of negative ions.

Abstract A Monte Carlo model is utilized for studying the behavior of electrons in the afterglow of an analytical microsecond dc pulsed glow discharge. This model uses several quantities as input data, such as electric field and potential, ion flux at the cathode, the fast argon ion and atom impact ionization rates, slow electron density, the electrical characterization of the pulse (voltage and current profiles) and temperature profile. These quantities were obtained by earlier Monte Carlo fluid calculations for a pulsed discharge. Our goal is to study the behavior of the so-called Monte Carlo electrons (i.e., those electrons created at the cathode or by ionization collisions in the plasma which are followed by using the Monte Carlo model) from their origin to the moment when they are absorbed at the cell walls or when they have lost their energy by collisions (being transferred to the group of slow electrons) in the afterglow of the pulsed discharge. The thermalization of the electrons is a phenomenon where the electron-electron Coulomb collisions acquire a special importance. Indeed, in the afterglow the cross sections of the other electron reactions taken into account in the model are very low, because of the very low electron energy. We study the electron energy distributions at several times during and after the pulse and at several positions in the plasma cell, focusing on the thermalization and on the behavior of the electrons in the afterglow. Also, the time evolution of the rates of the various collision processes, the average electron energy, the densities of Monte Carlo and slow electrons and the ionization degree are investigated.

Abstract FeMnC and FeMnSiAl TWIP steels deformed under the same conditions exhibit different work-hardening rates. The present study investigates the microstructure of plastically deformed FeMnC and FeMnSiAl samples, particularly the internal structure of the mechanically generated twins and their topology at the grain scale. Twins in the FeMnC steel are finer and full of sessile dislocations, rendering this material distinctly stronger with an improved work-hardening rate.

Abstract The main results and conclusions are presented of a round robin study of silicon oxide on silicon reference samples for ellipsometry. The oxide films with nominal thicknesses of 10, 50 and 120 nm are grown by thermal oxidation. The oxide film thicknesses have been determined by single wavelength ellipsometry (SWE), by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and by cross-sectional conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM and HREM) in different laboratories. The main conclusions are that special precautions have to be taken in order to use TEM as a reliable thickness measurement technique; that single wavelength ellipsometry can be used with great accuracy and reproducibility for the 50 and 120 nm film thicknesses but that it shows some inherent problems for the 10 nm films; and that spectroscopic ellipsometry showed for all film thicknesses an accuracy and reproducibility which is clearly superior to that of SWE.

Abstract Fe(2)C plays a crucial role in the precipitation of iron carbides. Jack's structural models for epsilon-Fe(2)C, and non-stoichiometric epsilon-Fe(2.4)C, are analyzed using first-principles calculations. Several new configurations of epsilon-Fe(2)C with even higher stability are found. We show how epsilon-Fe(2)C transforms into eta-Fe(2)C, and address the structural relationships with the chi-Fe(5)C(2), theta-Fe(3)C and Fe(7)C(3) phases. The relative occurrence of these phases in steel, as well as their probable evolution during tempering of quenched steels, is discussed. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.   Abstract Nanocrystalline tin dioxide modified by Pd and Pt clusters or by bimetallic PdPt nanoparticles was synthesized. Distribution of the modifers on the SnO2 surface was studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis with element distribution mapping. It was shown that the Pd/Pt ratio in bimetallic particles varies over a broad range and does not depend on the particle diameter. The effect of platinum metals on the reducibility of nanocrystalline SnO2 by hydrogen was determined. The sensing properties of the resulting materials towards 6.7 ppm CO in air were estimated in situ by electrical conductivity measurements. The sensor response of SnO2 modified with bimetallic PdPt particles was a superposition of the signals of samples with Pt and Pd clusters.

Abstract Indoor and outdoor concentrations of atmospheric gaseous pollutants as well as composition, size, and morphology of particulate matter have been investigated at the monastery of San Jerónimo in Granada (Southern Spain). Complementary micro- and nano-analytical techniques were applied; elemental and mineralogical composition and morphological characteristics of particulate matter were investigated combining electron probe microanalysis at the single particle level, and bulk aerosol samples were analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Microclimatic conditions at the monastery were monitored, and gas concentrations were assessed by means of diffusion tubes subsequently analyzed with ion chromatography. Results revealed high abundances of soil dust particles (aluminosilicates, calcite, dolomite, quartz), salt aerosols (chlorides, sulfates and ammonium-rich salts), and NO2 and SO2 both outdoors and indoors. Amorphous black carbon particles had surprisingly high abundances for Granada, a non-industrialized city. The composition of indoor particles corresponds to severe weathering affecting the construction materials and artworks inside the church; moreover their composition promotes a feedback process that intensifies the deterioration. Chemical reactions between chloride-rich salts and pigments from paintings were confirmed by TEM analyses. Indoors, blackening of surface decorative materials is fostered by particle re-suspension due to cleaning habits in the monastery (i.e. dusting). This is the first air quality study performed in a monument in the city of Granada with the aim of developing a strategy for preventive conservation.

Abstract Brass is a relatively stable alloy but it tends to tarnish over time due to the interaction with the atmosphere. Thus, it is rare to observe centuries-old brass objects untouched by the passing of time. For this reason, the pristine appearance of hundreds of brass sequins in the Enclosed Gardens of Mechelen (reliquary altarpieces produced between 1530 and 1550) is remarkable. In this study, the chemical and metallographic characterization of such unexpectedly well-preserved objects is presented. The results revealed the reason for their stability to be a combination of high-quality materials (i.e. medium Zn content, low impurities) and optimal surface properties (i.e. high homogeneity, low roughness), indicating the high level of expertise of the craftsmen who produced them. Novel fundamental insights on the historical manufacturing method of metallic sequins were also obtained.

Abstract Electrocatalysts play a pivotal role in advancing the application of water splitting for hydrogen production. This research unveils the potential of defective biphenylenes as high-efficiency catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Using first-principles simulations, we systematically investigated the structure, stability, and catalytic performance of defective biphenylenes. Our findings unveil that defect engineering significantly enhances the electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution. Specifically, biphenylene with a double-vacancy defect exhibits an outstanding Gibbs free energy of -0.08 eV, surpassing that of Pt, accompanied by a remarkable exchange current density of -3.08 A cm(-2), also surpassing that of Pt. Furthermore, we find the preference for the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism in the hydrogen evolution reaction, with a low energy barrier of 0.80 eV. This research provides a promising avenue for developing novel metal-free electrocatalysts for water splitting with earth-abundant carbon elements, making a significant step toward sustainable hydrogen production.

Abstract Complex transition-metal oxides exhibit a wide variety of chemical and physical properties which are a strong function the local electronic states of the transition-metal centres, as determined by a combination of metal oxidation state and local coordination environment. Topochemical reduction of the double perovskite oxide, LaSrCoRuO6, using Zr, yields LaSrCoRuO5. This reduced phase contains an ordered array of apex-linked square-based pyramidal Ru3+O5, square-planar Co1+O4 and octahedral Co3+O6 units, consistent with the coordination-geometry driven disproportionation of Co2+. Coordination-geometry driven disproportionation of d(7) transition-metal cations (e.g. Rh2+, Pd3+, Pt3+) is common in complex oxides containing 4d and 5d metals. However, the weak ligand field experienced by a 3d transition-metal such as cobalt leads to the expectation that d(7+) Co2+ should be stable to disproportionation in oxide environments, so the presence of Co1+O4 and Co3+O6 units in LaSrCoRuO5 is surprising. Low-temperature measurements indicate LaSrCoRuO5 adopts a ferromagnetically ordered state below 120 K due to couplings between S=(1)/(2) Ru3+ and S=1 Co1+.

Abstract The size, morphology and configuration of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a single-crystal NiTi alloy have been investigated by two-dimensional transmission electron microscopy-based image analysis and three-dimensional reconstruction from slice-and-view images obtained in a focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM) dual-beam system. Average distances between the precipitates measured along the compression direction correlate well between both techniques, while particle shape and configuration data is best obtained from FIB/SEM. Precipitates form pockets of B2 of 0.54 ìm in the compression direction and 1 ìm perpendicular to the compression direction.

Abstract Highly effective IR light-emitting diodes operating at the wavelength 1.66 mu m and based on the buried heterostructure In0.88Ga0.12As0.26P0.74/ In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP have been grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) and characterized in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM),electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electroluminescence measurements. The InGaAsP epilayers are found to be well lattice matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in InGaAsP alloys. A new type of selective CK, gas sensor has been developed and fabricated an the basis of the IR light-emitting diode mentioned above. Especially designed for the remote control of CH4 gas via fibre optics, an integrated optoelectronic readout scheme has been developed and tested, It is shown that the proposed type of sensor can be used for the quantitative remote control of CH4 gas concentration (0.2-100%) via a fibre glass line up to a distance of 2 x 1 km.
