Abstract: Electronic devices that work in the quantum regime often employ hybrid nanostructures to bring about a nonlinear behaviour. The nonlinearity that these can provide has proven to be useful, in particular, for applications in quantum computation. Here we present a hybrid device that acts as a capacitor with a nonlinear charge-voltage relation. The device consists of a nanowire placed between the plates of a coplanar capacitor, with a co-parallel alignment. At low temperatures, due to the finite density of states on the nanowire, the charge distribution in the capacitor is uneven and energy-dependent, resulting in a charge-dependent effective capacitance. We study this system analytically and numerically, and show that the nonlinearity of the capacitance is significant enough to be utilized in circuit quantum electrodynamics. The resulting nonlinearity can be switched on, modulated, and switched off by an external potential, thus making this capacitive device highly versatile for uses in quantum computation.

“CVD growth of monolayer MoS2: Role of growth zone configuration and precursors ratio”. Ozden A, Ay F, Sevik C, Perkgoz NK, Japanese journal of applied physics 56, 06gg05 (2017). http://doi.org/10.7567/JJAP.56.06GG05
Abstract: Single-layer, large-scale two-dimensional material growth is still a challenge for their wide-range usage. Therefore, we carried out a comprehensive study of monolayer MoS2 growth by CVD investigating the influence of growth zone configuration and precursors ratio. We first compared the two commonly used approaches regarding the relative substrate and precursor positions, namely, horizontal and face-down configurations where facedown approach is found to be more favorable to obtain larger flakes under identical growth conditions. Secondly, we used different types of substrate holders to investigate the influence of the Mo and S vapor confinement on the resulting diffusion environment. We suggest that local changes of the S to Mo vapor ratio in the growth zone is a key factor for the change of shape, size and uniformity of the resulting MoS2 formations, which is also confirmed by performing depositions under different precursor ratios. Therefore, to obtain continuous monolayer films, the S to Mo vapor ratio is needed to be kept within a certain range throughout the substrate. As a conclusion, we obtained monolayer triangles with a side length of 90 mu m and circles with a diameter of 500 mu m and continuous films with an area of 85 0 mu m x 1 cm when the S-to-Mo vapor ratio is optimized. Abstract: Hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting is being developed swiftly to address the ongoing energy crisis. Over the past decade, with the rise of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials, an increasing number of computational and experimental studies have focused on relevant van der Waals (vdW) semiconductor heterostructures for photocatalytic water splitting. In this review, the fundamental mechanism and distinctive performance of type-II and Z-scheme vdW heterostructure photocatalysts are presented. Accordingly, we have conducted a systematic review of recent studies focusing on candidates for photocatalysts, specifically vdW heterostructures involving 2D transition metal disulfides (TMDs), 2D Janus TMDs, and phosphorenes. The photocatalytic performance of these heterostructures and their suitability in theoretical scenarios are discussed based on their electronic and optoelectronic properties, particularly in terms of band structures, photoexcited carrier dynamics, and light absorption. In addition, various approaches for tuning the performance of these potential photocatalysts are illustrated. This strategic framework for constructing and modulating 2D heterostructure photocatalysts is expected to provide inspiration for addressing possible challenges in future studies.

“RSV frequency in children below 2 years hospitalized for lower respiratory tract infections”. Hacimustafaoglu M, Celebi S, Bozdemir SE, Ozgur T, Ozcan I, Guray A, Çakir D, Turkish Journal Of Pediatrics 55, 130 (2013)
Abstract: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most frequent agent of acute lower respiratory diseases and creates a significant burden of disease in children under 5 years all over the world. RSV causes severe lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) that require hospitalization, especially in children <= 2 years. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of RSV in children <= 2 years of age hospitalized for LRTI. Children <= 2 years of age hospitalized for one year for LRTI in the three largest hospitals of Bursa City Center, Turkey were evaluated. These three hospitals comprise 67.5% of all child beds in central Bursa, so this study allows us to evaluate the total disease burden and hospitalization incidence in central Bursa. Nasal swabs of the children were evaluated with RSV RespiStrip (Coris Bioconcept Organization). A total of 671 children were hospitalized for LRTI, and 254 (37.9%) had at least one hospitalization that was positive for RSV. Of all patients with LRTI, 54.8% (368/671) were hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis, while 45.2% (303/671) were hospitalized for pneumonia. Of patients with acute bronchiolitis or pneumonia, 41% (151/368) and 34% (103/303) were RSV+, respectively. Of RSV+ hospitalized children, 59.5% (151/254) were diagnosed as acute bronchiolitis and 40.5% (103/254) as pneumonia. The annual incidences of hospitalization due to LRTI, acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia were 20.5/1000, 11.2/1000 and 9.3/1000, respectively, in children <= 2 years of age. The annual incidences of hospitalization due to RSV+ LRTI, acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia were found as 7.8/1000, 4.6/1000 and 3.2/1000, respectively, in children <= 2 years of age. More than one-third of all children hospitalized with LRTI (38.3%, n=257) were in the 0-3 months age group. Compared to other age groups, RSV positivity was highest in that age group for acute bronchiolitis (57%), pneumonia (39.5%) and also total children with LRTI (47.9%). RSV is a very important cause of lower respiratory infections in children <= 2 years of age and occurred most frequently in those 0-3 months of age in our study. Since there is no other study assessing the annual hospitalization incidence of RSV+ LRTIs in one city in Turkey, our study has unique importance for providing valuable statistical data about RSV+ LRTIs.

“Electronic structure of a Si \delta-doped layer in a GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs quantum barrier”. Shi JM, Koenraad PM, van de Stadt AFW, Peeters FM, Devreese JT, Wolter JH, Physical Review B 54, 7996 (1996). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.54.7996
Abstract: We present a theoretical study of the electronic structure of a heavily Si delta-doped layer in a GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs quantum barrier. In this class of structures the effect of DX centers on the electronic properties can be tuned by changing the AlxGa1-xAs barrier width and/or the Al concentration, which leads to a lowering of the DX level with respect to the Fermi energy without disturbing the wave functions much. A self-consistent approach is developed in which the effective confinement potential and the Fermi energy of the system, the energies, the wave functions, and the electron densities of the discrete subbands have been obtained as a function of both the material parameters of the samples and the experimental conditions. The effect of DX centers on such structures at nonzero temperature and under an external pressure is investigated for three different models: (1) the DX(nc)(0) model with no correlation effects, (2) the d(+)/DX(0) model, and (3) the d(+)/DX(-) model with inclusion of correlation effects. In the actual calculation, influences of the background accepters, the discontinuity of the effective mass of the electrons at the interfaces of the different materials, band nonparabolicity, and the exchange-correlation energy of the electrons have been taken into account. We have found that (1) introducing a quantum barrier into delta-doped GaAs makes it possible to control the energy gaps between different electronic; subbands; (2) the electron wave functions are mon spread out when the repellent effect of the barriers is increased as compared to those in delta-doped GaAs; (3) increasing the quantum-barrier height and/or the application of hydrostatic pressure are helpful to experimentally observe the effect of the DX centers through a decrease of the total free-electron density; and (4) the correlation effects of the charged impurities are important for the systems under study.

Abstract: Starting from a model of microscopic interactions between C-70 molecules, we have developed a theory which describes the orientational dynamics and its coupling to lattice displacements in the rhombohedral phase of C-70 fullerite. The Landau free energy is calculated. We obtain a first-order phase transition to a monoclinic structure with the space group P2(1)/m. The transition is driven by the condensation of orientational quadrupoles at the F point of the Brillouin zone of the rhombohedral lattice. We find no evidence that the monoclinic structure is connected with the freezing in of orientations around the fivefold molecular axis. We calculate the lattice strains that are associated with the transition to the monoclinic structure. The theory is compared with a range of experimental data on the phase transition.

“MoSi₂N₄, single-layer : a novel two-dimensional material with outstanding mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties”. Abstract: Very recently, the 2D form of MoSi2N4 has been successfully fabricated (Hong et al 2020 Science 369 670). Motivated by these recent experimental results, we investigate the structural, mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties of the MoSi2N4 monolayer. The mechanical study confirms the stability of the MoSi2N4 monolayer. The Young's modulus decreases by similar to 30%, while the Poisson's ratio increases by similar to 30% compared to the corresponding values of graphene. In addition, the MoSi2N4 monolayer's work function is very similar to that of phosphorene and MoS2 monolayers. The electronic structure shows that the MoSi2N4 monolayer is an indirect semiconductor with a band gaps of 1.79 (2.35) eV using the GGA (HSE06) functional. The thermoelectric performance of the MoSi2N4 monolayer has been revealed and a figure of merit slightly larger than unity at high temperatures is calculated. The optical analysis shows that the first absorption peak for in-plane polarization is located in the visible range of the spectrum, therefore, the MoSi2N4 monolayer is a promising candidate for advanced optoelectronic nanodevices. In summary, the fascinating MoSi2N4 monoloayer is a promising 2D material for many applications due to its unique physical properties.

Abstract: First-principles calculation is a very powerful tool for discovery and design of novel two-dimensional materials with unique properties needed for the next generation technology. Motivated by the successful preparation of Bi2S3 nanosheets with orthorhombic structure in the last year, herein we gain a deep theoretical insight into the crystal structure, stability, electronic and optical properties of Bi2X3 (X = S, Se, Te) monolayers of orthorhombic phase employing the first-principles calculations. The Molecular dynamics study, phonon spectra, criteria for elastic stability, and cohesive energy results confirm the desired stability of the Bi2X3 monolayers. From S, to Se and Te, the work function value as well as stability of the systems decrease due to the decline in electronegativity. Mechanical properties study reveals that Bi2X3 monolayers have brittle nature. The electronic bandgap values of Bi2S3, Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 monolayers are predicted by the HSE06 functional to be 2.05, 1.20 and 1.16 eV, respectively. By assessing the optical properties, it has been found that Bi2X3 monolayers can absorb ultraviolet light. The high in-plane optical anisotropy offers an additional degree of freedom in the design of optical devices. The properties revealed in our survey will stimulate and inspire the search for new approaches of orthorhombic Bi2X3 (X = S, Se, Te) monolayers synthesis and properties manipulation for fabrication of novel nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices.
