Abstract |
We use the anisotropic time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to investigate the effect of a square array of out-of-plane magnetic dots on the dynamics of Josephson vortices (fluxons) in artificial stacks of superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) Josephson junctions in the presence of external DC and AC currents. Periodic pinning due to the magnetic dots distorts the triangular lattice of fluxons and results in the appearance of commensurability features in the current-voltage characteristics of the system. For the larger values of the magnetization, additional peaks appear in the voltage-time characteristics of the system due to the creation and annihilation of vortex-antivortex pairs. Peculiar changes in the response of the system to the applied current is found resulting in a “superradiant” vortex-flow state at large current values, where a rectangular lattice of moving vortices is formed. Synchronizing the motion of fluxons by adding a small ac component to the biasing dc current is realized. However, we found that synchronization becomes difficult for large magnetization of the dots due to the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs. |

Abstract |
We investigate the influence of an external perpendicular magnetic field on the lowest-energy states of an electron bound to a donor which is located near a semiconductor-metal interface. The problem is treated within the effective mass approach and the lowest-energy states are obtained through (1) the “numerically exact” finite element method, and (2) a variational approach using a trial wave function where all image charges that emerge due to the presence of the metallic gate are taken into account. The trial wave functions are constructed such that they reduce to an exponential behavior for sufficiently small magnetic fields and become Gaussian for intermediate and large magnetic fields. The average electron-donor distance can be controlled by the external magnetic field. We find that the size of the 2p(z) state depends strongly on the magnetic field when the donor is close to the interface, showing a nonmonotonic behavior, in contrast with the ground and the other excited states. Abstract |
The substitution of Cr3+ and Mn3+ for Fe3+ in the Bi4Fe6O13F oxyfluoride featuring the magnetically frustrated pentagonal Cairo lattice is reported. Bi4Fe4.1Cr0.9O13F and BiFe4.2Mn0.8O13F have been prepared using a solid state reaction in inert atmosphere. Their crystal structures were studied with transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy (S.G. P4(2)/mbc, a = 8.27836(2)angstrom, c = 18.00330(9) angstrom, R-F = 0.031 (Bi4Fe4.1Cr0.9O13F)), a= 8.29535(3)angstrom, c= 18.0060(1)angstrom, R-F = 0.027 (Bi4Fe4.1Cr0.9O13F)). The structures are formed by infinite rutile-like chains of the edge sharing BO6 octahedra (B transition metal cations) linked by the Fe2O7 groups of two corner-sharing tetrahedra. The"voids in thus formed framework are occupied by the Bi4F tetrahedra. The Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy reveals that Cr3+ and Mn3+ replace Fe3+. exclusively at the octahedral positions. The Mn- and Cr-doped compounds demonstrate antiferromagnetic ordering below T-N =165 K and 120 K, respectively. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
In Ethiopia, the demand for land for urbanisation is primarily met by converting rural land through expropriation. However, land expropriations are adversely affecting the previous land users by reducing the amount of production and their sources of income. In Bahir Dar, one of the fastest-growing cities in Ethiopia, approximately 300 landholdings are expropriated each year, on average, for urban expansion. This paper assesses the land expropriations to examine whether they offer economically appropriate compensation for the previous land users. Land expropriations for urbanisation between 2007/2008 and 2016/2017 were analysed based on data on land expropriation and its compensation payment obtained from the Bahir Dar City Land Administration and Management Office. Data were analysed using an exponential growth model and a stochastic budgeting technique in which Monte Carlo simulations are performed. Between 2007/2008 and 2016/2017, more than 1500 ha of land were included in the city's boundary through expropriation from 2900 landholders. The affected farmers received compensation that represents only 37 per cent of the value of current crop yields and its growth. The current compensation scheme ignores the impact of inflation on the prices of crops and assumes constant yields. It also excludes the value of crop residuals. We propose a workable discounted compensation framework that considers crop price and yield growths. This will make the compensation scheme more appropriate and make the affected farmers better off. |

Abstract |
Superconductivity in nanowires made of weak coupling superconductor materials is investigated using a Green function approach. We show that these are multigap systems in which the ratio Delta(T)/k(B)T(c) is to a large extent similar to what is observed in some high-T-c two-gap systems, such as MgB2 and some of the Fe-based superconductors. On the other hand, because of confinement, the superfluid density has a temperature behavior of the form n(s)(T) = 1 – (T/T-c)(3) near T-c, thus deviating from the BCS behavior for bulk superconductors. |

Abstract |
The existence of the [SrF(0.8)O(0.1)](2.5)[Mn(6)O(12)] = Sr(2.5)Mn(6)O(12.5 – delta)F(2) compound was established in the SrO-Mn(2)O(3)-SrF(2) system at 900A degrees C and p(O(2)) = 1 atm. The crystal structure of strontium fluoromanganite was determined from the X-ray powder diffraction data, electron diffraction, and high-resolution electron microscopy. It can be described in the monoclynic system with four Miller hklm indices: hklm: H = h a* + k b* + l c (1) (*) + m q (1), q (1), q (1) = c (2) (*) = gamma c (1) (*) , gamma a parts per thousand 0.632, a a parts per thousand a a parts per thousand 9.72 , b a parts per thousand 9.55 , c (1) a parts per thousand 2.84 , c (2) a parts per thousand 4.49 , monoclinic angle gamma a parts per thousand 95.6A degrees. The electromotive force method with a solid fluorine ion electrolyte was used to refine the composition of fluoromanganite and determine the thermodynamic functions of its formation from phases neighboring in the phase diagram (SrMn(3)O(6), Mn(2)O(3), SrF(2), and oxygen), Delta GA degrees, kJ/mol = -(111.7 +/- 1.9) + (89.5 +/- 1.5) x 10(-3) T. |

We solve analytically the linearized Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation in the presence of an uniform magnetic field with cylindrical boundary conditions. The solution of the non-linear GL equation is provided as an expansion in the basis of linearized solutions. Abstract |
The globular structure of M2 high speed steel in the rolled – annealed and as cast conditions was investigated in the semisolid state. Metallographic observations resulted in globular austenite particles that were surrounded by a liquid phase. Dissolution of various carbides in the austenite phase at semisolid temperatures led to grain boundary liquation and formation of near-spherical solid grains in a liquid matrix. Therefore, at the semisolid state, the solid particles were free from carbides. MC- type and M6C- type eutectic carbides re- precipitated at the grain boundaries during cooling of the samples from the semisolid temperature. The variation of shape factor versus holding time and holding temperature was examined. A transition value for shape factor changes in high speed steels was achieved. The growth rate constants of the Ostwald ripening and the coalescence mechanisms were calculated by using the experimentally determined rate constant. It was observed that less liquid droplets were enclosed inside the solid particles compared with non-ferrous alloys. Besides, it has been shown that at high solid fraction, the Ostwald ripening mechanism plays a prominent role in the coarsening phenomenon in comparison with the coalescence mechanism. Grains can rotate and arrange low misorientation with each other at high liquid contents, therefore low energetic grain boundaries form between these grains. These grain boundaries play an important role in the coalescence mechanism. |

Abstract |
The electron wave functions in the inversion layer are analyzed in the case where the dielectric barriers are not infinite. This forces the electron concentration closer to the interface silicon/oxide and reduces the subband energy. This treatment of the inversion layer is extended to the calculation of the electron mobility degradation due to remote Coulomb scattering on a high-k dielectric stacked transistor. The subband energy reduction leads to a decrease of the scattering charge needed to explain the experimental results. This model can also fit better the experimental data when compared with the case where no barrier permeation is considered. |

Abstract |
A classical two-dimensional (2D) model for an artificial atom is used to make a numerical exact study of elastic and nonelastic scattering. Interesting differences in the scattering angle distribution between this model and the well-known Rutherford scattering are found in the small energy and/or small impact parameter scattering regime. For scattering off a classical 2D hydrogen atom different phenomena such as ionization, exchange of particles, and inelastic scattering can occur. A scattering regime diagram is constructed as function of the impact parameter (b) and the initial velocity (v) of the incoming particle. In a small regime of the (b,v) space the system exhibits chaos, which is studied in more detail. Analytic expressions for the scattering angle are given in the high impact parameter asymptotic limit. |

Abstract |
A new Sillen – Aurivillius family of layered bismuth oxyhalides has been designed and successfully constructed on the basis of PbBiO2X(X = halogen) synthetic perites and g-form of Bi2VO5.5 solid elec- trolyte. This demonstrates, for the first time, the ability of the latter to serve as a building block in construction of mixed-layer structures. The parent compound PbBi3VO7.5-dCl (d = 0.05) has been investigated by powder XRD, TEM, XPS methods and magnetic susceptibility measurements. An unexpected but important condition for the formation of the mixed-layer structure is partial (ca. 5%) reduction of VV into VIV which probably suppresses competitive formation of apatite-like Pb – Bi vanadates. This reduction also stabilizes the g polymorphic form of Bi2VO5.5 not only in the intergrowth structure, but in Bi2V1-xMxO5.5-y (M – Nb, Sb) solid solutions. |

Abstract |
A theoretical model is presented for the description of the metal-insulator transition which accompanies the structural phase transition at T approximate to 50 K in polymerized KC60. The model involves orientational charge density waves (along the C-60 polymer chains) which were introduced previously for a description of the structural phase transition. A satisfactory qualitative and quantitative understanding is obtained when the three-dimensionality of the crystal and the presence of the K+ counterions is properly taken into account. |

Abstract |
In this work an aptamer-based biosensor is combined with a multisine electrochemical impedance spectroscopy sensing methodology into a novel and promising biosensing strategy. Employing a multisine instead of a traditional single sine measuring method allows the detection and quantification of parameters that provide information about the accuracy and reliability of the results, such as noise and distortions. This does not only lead to a shorter measurement time, but it also enables an easy and fast evaluation of the quality of the data and fitting, leading to more accurate results. |

Abstract |
The complex oxide Ca7Mn2.14Ga5.86O17.93 was synthesized by the solid-state reaction in a sealed evacuated quartz tube at 1000 °C. Its crystal structure was determined by electron diffraction and X-ray powder diffraction. The structure can be represented as a tetrahedral framework, viz., the polyanion [(Mn0.285Ga0.715)15O29.86]19- stabilized by the incorporated cation [Ca14GaO6]19+. The polycation consists of the GaO6 octahedra surrounded by the Ca atoms, which are arranged to form a cube capped at all places. The tetrahedral framework is partially disordered due to the presence of tetrahedra with two possible orientations in the positions (0, 0, 0) and (x, x, x) with x ≈ 0.15 and 0.17. The relationship between the Ca7Mn2.14Ga5.86O17.93 structures and related ordered phases with the symmetry F23, as well as the influence of the oxygen content on the ordering in the tetrahedral framework, are discussed. |

Abstract |
Understanding communicational behavior of rangelands stakeholders is fundamental for effective development of rangeland management plans. This study aimed to understand differences between stakeholders relations among various actors involved in rangeland management using social network analysis (SNA). A survey was conducted on 334 stakeholders (89 extension agents, 110 researchers and 135 executive agents) in the Tehran province, Iran. Results showed that all the three groups of stakeholders are interested in making contact mainly within their own group. Furthermore, while the executive agents have shared the strongest technical and friendship relations with the two other groups, the extension agents established the strongest administrative interactions. The researchers, however, made a poor link especially with the extension agents. The study concluded that SNA could be an efficient tool to assess communicational behavior in rangeland management. |

Abstract |
Reaction of the n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popper oxide LaSr3CoRuO8 with CaH2 yields the oxyhydride phase LaSr3CoRuO4H4 via topochemical anion-exchange. Close inspection of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data in combination with HAADF-STEM images reveals that nanoparticles of SrO are exsolved from the system during the reaction, with the change in cation stoichiometry accommodated by the inclusion of n > 1 (Co/Ru)nOn+1H2n ‘perovskite’ layers into the Ruddlesden-Popper stacking sequence. This novel pseudo-topochemical process offers a new route for the formation of n > 1 Ruddlesden-Popper structured materials. Magnetization data are consistent with a LaSr3Co1+Ru2+O4H4 (Co1+, d8, S = 1; Ru2+, d6, S = 0) oxidation/spin state combination. Neutron diffraction and μ+SR data show no evidence for long-range magnetic order down to 2 K, suggesting the diamagnetic Ru2+ centers impede the Co-Co magnetic exchange interactions. |

Abstract |
The split diffuse maxima around the {110} and {100} positions in the diffraction pattern of short-range-ordered Cu1-xPdx alloys (x=0.10...0.60) are attributed to small atomic clusters, being part of the underlying fee lattice. By analyzing the reciprocal space geometry, our cluster method identifies two prominent cluster types: the tetrahedron of nearest neighbors and a linear three-points cluster along the [110] directions. Since both cluster types contain different information on the same nearest-neighbor correlations, local anisotropy has to be assumed. It is shown that the three interatomic pair interactions within these basic clusters are sufficient to generate the spot splitting in the diffraction pattern. A ground-state analysis with these interactions reproduces the results of the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising model. |

Abstract |
The precipitation mechanism of the Q phase in Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloys has long been the subject of ambiguity and debate since its metastable phase (Q 0) has the same crystal structure and similar lattice parameters as its equilibrium counterparts. In the present work, the evolution of the Q 0 (Q) phase during aging is studied by combination of quantitative atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. It was found that the transformation from the Q 0 to the Q phase involves changes of the occupancy of Al atoms in atomic columns of the Q 0 (Q) phase. The Al atoms incorporated in the Cu, Si and Mg columns are gradually released into the Al matrix, while mixing between Cu and Si atoms occurs in the Si columns. This transformation process is mainly attributed to the low lattice misfit of the equilibrium Q phase. Besides, the formation of various compositions of the Q phase is due to the different occupancy in the atomic columns of the Q phase. The occupancy changes in the columns of the Q phase are kinetically controlled and are strongly influenced by the alloy composition and aging temperature. |

Abstract |
Nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and nitrous oxide (N2O) hinder the development of mainstream partial nitritation/anammox. To overcome these, endogenous free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA), which can be produced in the sidestream, were used for return-sludge treatment for two integrated-film activated sludge reactors containing biomass in flocs and on carriers. The repeated exposure of biomass from one reactor to FA shocks had a limited impact on NOB suppression but inhibited anammox bacteria (AnAOB). In the other reactor, repeated FNA shocks to the separated flocs failed to limit the system’s nitrate production since NOB activity was still high on the biofilms attached to the unexposed carriers. In contrast, the repeated FNA treatment of flocs and carriers favored aerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AerAOB) over NOB activity with AnAOB negligibly affected. It was further revealed that return-sludge treatment with higher FNA levels led to lower N2O emissions under similar effluent nitrite concentrations. On this basis, weekly 4 h FNA shocks of 2.0 mg of HNO2-N/L were identified as an optimal and realistic treatment, which not only enabled nitrogen removal efficiencies of ∼65% at nitrogen removal rates of ∼130 mg of N/L/d (20 °C) but also yielded the lowest cost and carbon footprint. |

Abstract |
The characteristics of spin waves in ferromagnetic waveguides with non-uniform magnetization have been investigated for situations where the shape anisotropy field of the waveguide is comparable to the external bias field. Spin-wave generation was realized by the magnetoelastic effect by applying normal and shear strain components, as well as by the Oersted field emitted by an inductive antenna. The magnetoelastic excitation field has a non-uniform profile over the width of the waveguide because of the non-uniform magnetization orientation, whereas the Oersted field remains uniform. Using micromagnetic simulations, we indicate that both types of excitation fields generate quantised width modes with both odd and even mode numbers as well as tilted phase fronts. We demonstrate that these effects originate from the average magnetization orientation with respect to the main axes of the magnetic waveguide. Furthermore, it is indicated that the excitation efficiency of the second-order mode generally surpasses that of the first-order mode due to their symmetry. The relative intensity of the excited modes can be controlled by the strain state as well as by tuning the dimensions of the excitation area. Finally, we demonstrate that the nonreciprocity of spin-wave radiation due to the chirality of an Oersted field generated by an inductive antenna is absent for magnetoelastic spin-wave excitation. |

Abstract |
Demand response (DR) can aid with grid integration of renewables, ensuring security of supply, and reducing generation costs. However, not enough is known about how residential customers’ perceptions of DR shape their response to such programs. This paper offers a deeper understanding of – and reveals the heterogeneity in – this relationship by conducting a quantile regression analysis of a Belgian DR trial, combining data on response with information on household attitudes towards smart appliances. Results overall suggest that improving response requires subtle shifts in electricity consumption behaviour, which can be achieved through changes in user perceptions. Specifically, if customers are inclined to be flexible, a stronger perception of smart appliances as being beneficial can greatly improve response. With those who are less flexible, the cost of smart appliances is a bigger concern. Thus, when designing DR programs, policymakers should aim to promote modest behaviour changes – so as to minimise inconvenience – in customers, by improving awareness on the benefits of smart appliances. Uptake of such DR programs may be improved by explaining the financial benefits or offering incentives to less flexible population segments. Lastly, improving response among older population segments will require a deeper investigation into their concerns. |

Abstract |
Using the mass-spectrometric method we studied the effect of light gas inclusions on the formation process of multi-component laser-induced plasma ions. Masscharge characteristics, as well as energy and spatial distribution of the plasma ions are analysed. We found that both the energy and maximal charge of heavy component ions decrease due to the presence of gas atoms in the solid target surface layer. |

Abstract |
Using the mass-spectrometric method we study the charge, energy and spatial characteristics of ions in multicomponent plasma, generated under the action of Nd : YAG laser radiation on the surface of solid targets. We focus on the effect of the entry form of light gas atoms on the parameters of ions in such laser-produced plasmas. We found that the presence of light gas atoms considerably affects the parameters (e.g. the intensity and the charge multiplicity) of the heavier ions. |
