“FCC surface precipitation in Cu-Zn-Al after low angle GA+ ion irradiation”. Zelaya E, Schryvers D, Materials transactions 51, 2177 (2010). http://doi.org/10.2320/matertrans.M2010171
Abstract: The precipitation of a disordered FCC surface structure after low angle Ga+ ion irradiation during focused ion beam thinning of a B2 Cu-Zn-Al alloy with e/a=1.48 is reported. Conventional as well as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques reveal FCC layers on both sides of the thinned sample. The occurrence of this structure is attributed to disordering and dezincification of the alloy resulting from the sputtering process during the irradiation. Changes in crystallographic sample orientation with respect to the incoming ion beam do not have a significant effect on the appearance of the FCC surface structure.

Abstract: The η-M6C, γ-M23C6, and π-M11C2 phases (M = Cr, Mn and Fe) have complex cubic lattices with lattice parameters of approximately 1.0 nm. They belong to the CFCC-TmC family (complex face-centered cubic transition metal carbides), display a rich variety of crystal structures, and play in important role in iron alloys and steels. Here we show that first-principles calculations predict high stability for the γ-M23C6 and η-M6C phases, and instability for the π-M11C2 phases, taking into account various compositional and structural possibilities. The calculations also show a wide variety in magnetic properties. The Cr-containing phases were found to be non-magnetic and the Fe-phases to be ferromagnetic, while the Mn-containing phases were found to be either ferrimagnetic or non-magnetic. Details of the local atomic structures, and the formation and stability of these precipitates in alloys are discussed.

“Microwave-assisted synthesis of mesoporous titania with increased crystallinity, specific surface area, and photocatalytic activity”. Meire M, Verbruggen SW, Lenaerts S, Lommens P, Van Der Voort P, Van Driessche I, Journal of materials science 51, 9822 (2016). http://doi.org/10.1007/S10853-016-0215-Y
Abstract: Mesoporous titanium dioxide is a material finding its use in a wide range of applications. For many of these, it is important to achieve a high degree of crystallinity in the material. It is generally accepted that the use of the soft templating approach to synthesize mesoporous titania, results in a compromise between crystallinity and specific surface area due to thermal instability of the used templates. In this paper, we explore how the use of microwave irradiation can influence the crystallinity, specific surface area, and the electronic properties of mesoporous titania. Therefore, we combined microwave radiation with an evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) synthesis. We show that additional microwave treatment at carefully chosen synthesis steps can enhance the crystallinity with 20 % without causing significant loss of surface area (>360 m2/g). Surface photovoltage measurements were used to investigate the electronic properties. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated in aqueous media by following the degradation of an industrial dye, methylene blue, and the herbicide isoproturon under UV irradiation and in gaseous media looking at the degradation of acetaldehyde, a common indoor pollutant under UVA irradiation. In all cases, the microwave treatment results in more active materials.

Abstract: The present work reports on the application and the evaluation of a multitude of crosslinking approaches including high-energy irradiation, redox-initiating systems and conventional carbodiimide-coupling chemistry for frozen and/or freeze-dried porous gelatin scaffolds. The latter is particularly relevant for a plethora of biomedical applications such as tissue engineering supports, wound dressings, adhesive and absorbent pads for surgery, etc. Moreover, the results obtained for gelatin can be considered a proof-of-concept to be extrapolated to other polymer systems containing double bonds and/or amines and carboxylic acids to also realize scaffold crosslinking in dry or frozen state. The results showed that high-energy irradiation at -5 A degrees C enabled sufficient segmental mobility to induce chemical crosslinking after performing a cryogenic treatment of methacrylamide-modified gelatin scaffolds. Alternatively, although several redox-initiating systems were unable to chemically crosslink functionalized gelatin, the combination of ammonium persulphate and TEMED resulted in the formation of scaffolds with a reasonable gel fraction. Interestingly, carbodiimide-coupling was found suitable to crosslink freeze-dried gelatin matrices.

Abstract: The low-temperature transport properties are studied for electrons confined in delta-doped semiconductor structures with two sheets in parallel. The subband quantum mobility and transport mobility are calculated numerically for the Si delta-doped GaAs systems. The effect of coupling of the two delta layers on the electron transport is investigated. Our calculations are in good agreement with experimental results.

“Magnetotransport in a pseudomorphic GaAs/Ga0.8In0.2As/Ga0.75Al0.25As heterostructure with a Si \delta-doping layer”. van der Burgt M, Karavolas VC, Peeters FM, Singleton J, Nicholas RJ, Herlach F, Harris JJ, Van Hove M, Borghs G, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 52, 12218 (1995). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.52.12218
Abstract: Magnetotransport properties of a pseudomorphic GsAs/Ga0.8In0.2As/Ga0.75Al0.25As heterostructure are investigated in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T and at temperatures of T = 1.4 and 4.2 K. The structure studied consists of a Si delta layer parallel to a Ga0.8In0.2As quantum well (QW). The dark electron density of the structure is n(c) = 1.67 x 10(16) m(-2). By illumination the density can be increased up to a factor of 4; this way the second subband in the Ga0.08In0.2As QW can become populated as well as the Si delta layer. The presence of electrons in the delta layer results in drastic changes in the transport data, especially at magnetic fields beyond 30 T. The phenomena observed are interpreted as (i) magnetic freeze-out of carriers in the delta layer when a low density of electrons is present in the delta layer, and (ii) quantization of the electron motion in the two-dimensional electron gases in both the Ga0.8In0.2As QW and the Si delta layer in the case of high densities. These conclusions are corroborated by the numerical results of our theoretical model. We obtain satisfactory agreement between model and experiment.

Abstract: We have developed a microscopic theory which describes the orientational dynamics of C-70 molecules and its coupling to lattice displacements in the face-centered-cubic phase of C-70 fullerite. The single-molecule orientational density distribution in the disordered phase is calculated. The ferroelastic transition to the rhombohedral phase is investigated. The discontinuity of the orientational order parameter at the phase transition is calculated. It is found that the transition leads to a stretching of the primitive unit cell along a [111] cubic direction. A softening of the elastic constant c(44) at the transition is predicted.

Abstract: The electron transport properties in delta-doped semiconductor systems-are studied. The subband electronic structure of the delta-doped system is obtained by solving the coupled Schrodinger and Poisson equations. The screening of the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas is taken into account for the ionized impurity scattering through the matrix dielectric function within the random-phase approximation. The quantum and transport mobilities are calculated numerically as a function of the total electron density and the width of the doped layer at zero temperature. The intersubband scattering and the effect of empty subbands above the Fermi level on the electron mobilities are investigated. The calculated mobilities are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental results.

Abstract: The nonlinear Schrodinger equation is solved on an infinitesimal thin ring or circle. We obtained the exact real wave functions with their corresponding energies for the ground state and the excited states. Critical values of the circle perimeter are found at which the ground state changes its structure and additional higher excited states appear. Also, the complex wave functions that correspond to energy levels with finite angular momentum are studied.

Abstract: Time evolution of precipitates related to age-hardening in Ti-2.3 wt pct Cu alloys was investigated by electron microscopy. In isothermal aging at 723 K, the hardness increases continuously owing to precipitation strengthening, whereas in two-step aging where the aging temperature is switched from 673 K to 873 K after 100 hours, the hardness is found to drastically drop after the aging temperature switches. In isothermal aging, metastable and stable precipitates are independently nucleated, whereas characteristic V-shaped clusters of precipitates are observed during the two-step aging. It is revealed by atomic-scale observations that the V-shaped clusters are composed of metastable and stable precipitates and each type of precipitate has a different orientation relationship with the alpha phase: (10 (3) over bar)//(0001)(alpha) and [0 (1) over bar0]//respectively. The drop in hardness during two-step aging can be explained by a synergistic effect of decreased precipitation strengthening and solid solution strengthening. Abstract: A combination of infrared spectroscopy and magnetotransport is used to investigate the impurity band and the magnetic-field-induced metal-insulator transition in n-type GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs superlattices. The dropping of the Fermi level from the conduction band into the impurity band upon increasing magnetic field is observed in a sample doped to n=4n(c), where n(c) is the critical density according to the Mott criterion. The metal-insulator transition takes place while the Fermi level is in the impurity band, with no qualitative change from the metallic to the insulating side. Due to the anisotropy of the superlattice band structure, the metal-insulator transition is shifted to higher magnetic field, when the magnetic field is tilted away from the growth axis towards the layer planes.
