Title Accurate infrared absorption measurement of interstitial and precipitated oxygen in p+ silicon wafers Type A1 Journal article
Year 1999 Publication Microelectronic engineering Abbreviated Journal Microelectron Eng
  Volume (up) 45 Issue 2-3 Pages 277-282

Abstract A novel infrared absorption method has been developed to measure [he interstitial oxygen concentration in highly doped silicon. Thin samples of the order of 10-30 mu m are prepared in an essentially stress-free state without changing the state of the crystal. The oxygen concentration is then determined by measuring the height of the 1136-cm(-1) absorption peak due to interstitial oxygen at 5.5 K. The obtained results on as-grown samples are compared with those from gas fusion analysis. The precipitated oxygen concentration in annealed samples is also determined with the new method. It will be shown that the interstitial oxygen concentration in highly doped silicon can be determined with high accuracy and down to concentrations of 10(17) cm(-3). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.   Abstract Multiple-step martensitic transformations of an aged Ni51Ti49 single crystal using calorimetric method were investigated. Results show that for short aging times (1045 min) multiple-step martensitic transformations on cooling occur in two steps. Applying intermediate aging times (1.254 h) results in three steps and long aging times (more than 8 h) lead to two-step martensitic transformations again. This behavior has not been recognized in NiTi single crystals in literatures. It can be related to the heterogeneity of composition and stress fields around Ni4Ti3 precipitates.

Abstract The size and lattice constant evolution of Pb nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by high fluence implantation in crystalline Si have been studied with a variety of experimental techniques. Results obtained from small-angle x-ray scattering showed that the Pb NPs grow with increasing implantation fluence and annealing duration. The theory of NP growth kinetics can be applied to qualitatively explain the size evolution of the Pb NPs during the implantation and annealing processes. Moreover, the lattice constant of the Pb NPs was evaluated by conventional x-ray diffraction. The lattice dilatation was observed to decrease with increasing size of the Pb NPs. Such lattice constant tuning can be attributed to the pseudomorphism caused by the lattice mismatch between the Pb NPs and the Si matrix.

Title A pseudo-tetragonal tungsten bronze superstructure: a combined solution of the crystal structure of K6.4(Nb,Ta)36.3O94 with advanced transmission electron microscopy and neutron diffraction Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The crystal structure of the K6.4Nb28.2Ta8.1O94 pseudo-tetragonal tungsten bronze-type oxide was determined using a combination of X-ray powder diffraction, neutron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques, including electron diffraction, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), annular bright field STEM (ABF-STEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray compositional mapping (STEM-EDX). The compound crystallizes in the space group Pbam with unit cell parameters a = 37.468(9) A, b = 12.493(3) A, c = 3.95333(15) A. The structure consists of corner sharing (Nb,Ta)O6 octahedra forming trigonal, tetragonal and pentagonal tunnels. All tetragonal tunnels are occupied by K(+) ions, while 1/3 of the pentagonal tunnels are preferentially occupied by Nb(5+)/Ta(5+) and 2/3 are occupied by K(+) in a regular pattern. A fractional substitution of K(+) in the pentagonal tunnels by Nb(5+)/Ta(5+) is suggested by the analysis of the HAADF-STEM images. In contrast to similar structures, such as K2Nb8O21, also parts of the trigonal tunnels are fractionally occupied by K(+) cations.

Title Synthesis, structure and magnetic ordering of the mullite-type Bi2Fe4-xCrxO9 solid solutions with a frustrated pentagonal Cairo lattice Type A1 Journal article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of the Chemical Society : Dalton transactions Abbreviated Journal Dalton T

Abstract Highly homogeneous mullite-type solid solutions Bi2Fe4-xCrxO9 (x = 0.5, 1, 1.2) were synthesized using a soft chemistry technique followed by a solid-state reaction in Ar. The crystal structure of Bi2Fe3CrO9 was investigated using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy (S.G. Pbam, a = 7.95579(9) angstrom , b = 8.39145(9) angstrom, c = 5.98242(7) angstrom, R-F(X-ray) = 0.022, R-F(neutron) = 0.057). The ab planes in the structure are tessellated with distorted pentagonal loops built up by three tetrahedrally coordinated Fe sites and two octahedrally coordinated Fe/Cr sites, linked together in the ab plane by corner-sharing forming a pentagonal Cairo lattice. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and powder neutron diffraction show that the compounds order antiferromagnetically (AFM) with the Neel temperatures decreasing upon increasing the Cr content from T-N similar to 250 K for x = 0 to T-N similar to 155 K for x = 1.2. The magnetic structure of Bi2Fe3CrO9 at T = 30 K is characterized by a propagation vector k = (1/2,1/2,1/2). The tetrahedrally coordinated Fe cations form singlet pairs within dimers of corner-sharing tetrahedra, but spins on the neighboring dimers are nearly orthogonal. The octahedrally coordinated (Fe, Cr) cations form antiferromagnetic up-up-down-down chains along c, while the spin arrangement in the ab plane is nearly orthogonal between nearest neighbors and collinear between second neighbors. The resulting magnetic structure is remarkably different from the one in pure Bi2Fe4O9 and features several types of spin correlations even on crystallographically equivalent exchange that may be caused by the simultaneous presence of Fe and Cr on the octahedral site.

Abstract A methodology for the quantitative compositional characterization of nickel silicides by high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging is presented. HAADF-STEM images of a set of nickel silicide reference samples Ni3Si, Ni31Si12, Ni2Si, NiSi and NiSi2 are taken at identical experimental conditions. The correlation between sample thickness and HAADF-STEM intensity is discussed. In order to quantify the relationship between the experimental Z-contrast intensities and the composition of the analysed layers, the ratio of the HAADF-STEM intensity to the sample thickness or to the intensity of the silicon substrate is determined for each nickel silicide reference sample. Diffraction contrast is still detected on the HAADF-STEM images, even though the detector is set at the largest possible detection angle. The influence on the quantification results of intensity fluctuations caused by diffraction contrast and channelling is examined. The methodology is applied to FUSI gate devices and to horizontal TFET devices with different nickel silicides formed on source, gate and drain. It is shown that, if the elements which are present are known, this methodology allows a fast quantitative 2-dimensional compositional analysis.

Abstract Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were exposed to a CF4 rf-plasma. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis shows that the treatment effectively grafts fluorine atoms onto the MWCNTs. The fluorine atomic concentration and the nature of the CF bond (semi-ionic or covalent) can be tuned by varying the exposure time. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirms that the valence electronic states are altered by the grafting of fluorine atoms. Characterization with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals that while the plasma treatment does not induce significant etching impact on the CNT-surface, it does increase the number of active sites for gold cluster formation.

Abstract A combination of new thermoresponsive statistical polyoxazolines, poly[(2-butyl-2-oxazoline)-stat-(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline)] [pBuOx-co-piPrOx], with different hydrophobic moieties and F127 surfactant as a template system for the creation of thermosensitive nanoparticles for radionuclide delivery has recently been tested [Pánek, Filippov, Hrubý, Rabyk, Bogomolova, Kučka Stěpánek (2012). Macromol. Rapid Commun.33, 16831689]. It was shown that the presence of the thermosensitive F127 triblock copolymer in solution reduces nanoparticle size and polydispersity. This article focuses on a determination of the internal structure and solution properties of the nanoparticles in the temperature range from 288 to 312 K. Here, it is demonstrated that below the cloud point temperature (CPT) the polyoxazolines and F127 form complexes that co-exist in solution with single F127 molecules and large aggregates. When the temperature is raised above the CPT, nanoparticles composed of polyoxazolines and F127 are predominant in solution. These nanoparticles could be described by a spherical shell model. It was found that the molar weight and hydrophobicity of the polymer do not influence the size of the outer radius and only slightly change the inner radius of the nanoparticles. At the same time, molar weight and hydrophobicity did affect the process of nanoparticle formation. In conclusion, poly(2-oxazoline) molecules are fully incorporated inside of F127 micelles, and this result is very promising for the successful application of such systems in radionuclide delivery.

Abstract The substitution of vanadium in vanadium dioxide VO2 influences the critical temperatures of structural and metal-to-insulator transitions in different ways depending on the valence of the dopant. Rhenium adopts valence states between + 4 and + 7 in an octahedral oxygen surrounding and is particularly interesting in this context. Structural investigation of V1-xRexO2 solid solutions (0.01 <= x <= 0.30) between 80 and 1200 K using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction revealed only two polymorphs that resemble VO2: the low-temperature monoclinic MoO2-type form (space group P2(1)/c), and the tetragonal rutile-like form (space group P4(2)/mnm). However, for compositions with 0.03 < x <= 0.15 a phase separation in the solid solution was observed below 1000 K upon cooling down from 1200 K, giving rise to two isostructural phases with slightly different lattice parameters. This is reflected in the appearance of two metal-toinsulator transition temperatures detected by magnetization and specific heat measurements. Comprehensive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies showed that an increased amount of Re leads to a change in the Re valence state from solely Re6+ at a low doping level (<= 3 at% Re) via mixed-valence states Re4+/Re6+ for at least 0.03 < x <= 0.10, up to nearly pure Re4+ in V0.70Re0.30O2. Thus, compositions V1-xRexO2 with only one valence state of Re in the material (Re6+ or Re4+) can be obtained as a single phase, while intermediate compositions are subjected to a phase separation, presumably due to different valence states of Re.

Abstract This study discusses rational reproduction of liquid immiscibility in the BaO-SiO2-TiO2 system. While a ternary assessment requires sub-binary descriptions in the same thermodynamic model, the related sub-binary systems BaO-SiO2, BaO-TiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 liquid and solid phases have been evaluated using different thermodynamic models in the literature. In this study, BaO-SiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 were assessed using the Ionic Two Sublattice model (I2SL) based on experimental data from the literature. BaO-TiO2 was already assessed using this model. Binary descriptions developed were then used for the assessment of liquid immiscibility in the BaO-SiO2-TiO2 system. Ternary interaction parameters were found necessary for rational reproduction of the new ternary experimental data gathered in the present work. The model parameters for each system were evaluated using a CAPLHAD approach. A set of parameters is proposed. They show good agreement between the calculated and experimental equilibrium liquidus, liquid immiscibility and thermochemical properties in the BaO-SiO2-TiO2 system. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.   Abstract We have studied the structural and electronic properties of lithium-intercalated graphite (LIG) for various Li content. Atomic relaxation shows that Li above the center of the carbon hexagon in a AAAA stacked graphite is the only stable Li configuration in stage 1 intercalated graphite. Lithium and Carbon 1s energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) calculations are performed on the Li-intercalated graphite using the core-excited density-functional theory formulation. Several features of the Li 1s ELNES are correlated with reported experimental features. The ELNES spectra of Li is found to be electron beam orientation sensitive and this property is used to assign the origin of the various Li 1s ELNES features. Information about core-hole screening by the valence electrons and charge transfer in the LIG systems is obtained from the C 1s ELNES and valence charge density difference calculations, respectively.

Abstract Expanded graphite decorated with nickel oxide particles (EGNiO) has been synthesized through electrochemical oxidation of natural graphite in an aqueous nickel nitrate solution followed by a heat treatment. EGNiO was used to prepare nickel/carbon composites using two techniques: (a) hydrogen reduction of nickel oxide particles loaded on the expanded graphite surface and (b) pyrolysis of coal tar pitch-impregnated EGNiO blocks. The EGNiO as well as the nickel/carbon composites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction.

Abstract It is known that the neutral image tone of a developed photographic film becomes brownish when the thickness of the original silver halide tabular crystals is reduced. We investigate by electron microscopy to what extent the silver filament structure has changed and how it induces the shift in image tone. Therefore, two samples of AgBr {111} tabular crystals with average thicknesses of 160 nm and 90 nm respectively, are compared. It is shown that the dimensions and defect structure of the filaments are comparable, but that the 90 nm crystals result in a more widely spaced structure, which explains the shift in image tone on a qualitative level. The influence of the addition of an image toner, i.e., phenylmercaptotetrazole, on the filament structure is also investigated. An even more open filament structure of longer, but smaller filaments was observed.
