Abstract: We investigate the properties of carriers in graphene-based quantum wires created by potential barriers, by means of analytical and numerical calculations. We obtain expressions for the energy spectrum as a function of barrier height, well width and linear momentum along the wire. The results demonstrate a direction-dependent resonant transmission across the potential well.

Abstract: ZrO2 and HfO2 nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed in SiO2 matrices (supported film and bulk powders) by copolymerization of two oxozirconium and oxohafnium clusters (M4O(2)(OMc)(12), M= Zr, Hf; OMc = OC(O)-C(CH3)=CH2) with (methacryloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (MAPTMS, (CH2=C(CH3)C(O)O)-(CH2)(3)Si(OCH3)(3)). After calcination (at a temperature >= 800 degrees C), a silica matrix with homogeneously distributed MO2 nanocrystallites is obtained. This route yields a spatially homogeneous dispersion of the metal precursors inside the silica matrix, which is maintained during calcination. The composition of the films and the powders is studied before and after calcination by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). The local environment of the metal atoms in one of the calcined samples is investigated by using X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD) the crystallization of Hf and Zr oxides is seen at temperatures higher than those expected for the pure oxides, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows the presence of well-distributed and isolated crystalline oxide nanoparticles (540 nm).

Abstract: We report a microstructural and compositional study of a 90% Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 – 10% PbTiO3 ceramic sample. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed the presence of compositional ordered nano-domains (1 – 4 mn), observable in two specific orientations, [0 (1) over bar 1] and [1 1 (2) over bar]. However, the visibility and the ordering degree of the nano-domains on the HRTEM images are not at all obvious. Fourier filtering of the images clearly revealed the ordered domains. Antiphase boundaries lying in the (111) planes separate them, while (100) and (111) facets separate the ordered domains from the disordered matrix. Their shape is plate-like, not uniformly spread in the disordered matrix. Their average size varies in different regions of the sample, most probably due to a non-uniform distribution of Ti, as observed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Abstract: In this work, GaN growth on porous Si(111) will be reported. The porosity of the substrates was 30% or 50%. In the latter case, various thicknesses, from 0.6 mu m to 10 mu m, were investigated. The morphology of the GaN surfaces was analyzed by optical interference microscopy. The crystalline quality of the epitaxial layers was characterized by High Resolution X-Ray Diffraction (HR-XRD) and cross-sectional Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). A Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of the X-ray symmetric rocking curve (0002) 2 theta – omega scan of 290 arc see was obtained for a 1 mu m thick GaN layer, which is comparable with that of GaN grown on bulk Si(111) substrates. Abstract: We introduce a generalized non-equilibrium statistical operator (NSO) to study a current-carrying system. The NSO is used to derive a set of quantum kinetic equations based on quantum mechanical balance equations. The quantum kinetic equations are solved self-consistently together with Poissons equation to solve a general transport problem. We show that these kinetic equations can be used to rederive the Landauer formula for the conductance of a quantum point contact, without any reference to reservoirs at different chemical potentials. Instead, energy dissipation is taken into account explicitly through the electron-phonon interaction. We find that both elastic and inelastic scattering are necessary to obtain the Landauer conductance.

Abstract: The three-dimensional (3D) structure and chemical composition of bamboo-like carbon nanotubes including the catalyst particles that are. used during their growth are studied by discrete electron tomography in combination with energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy. It is found that cavities are present in the catalyst particles. Furthermore, only a small percentage of the catalyst particles consist of pure Cu, since a large volume fraction of the particles is oxidized to CU(2)0. These volume fractions are determined quantitatively from 3D reconstructions obtained by discrete tomography.
