Abstract: Microscopic self-propelled swimmers capable of autonomous navigation through complex environments provide appealing opportunities for localization, pick-up and delivery of micro and nanoscopic objects. Inspired by motile cells and bacteria, man-made microswimmers have been fabricated, and their motion in patterned surroundings has been experimentally studied. We propose to use self-driven artificial microswimmers for the separation of binary mixtures of colloids. We revealed different regimes of separation, including one with a velocity inversion. Our findings could be of use for various biological and medical applications.

Abstract: An alternative pathway to assemble mesoporous molecular sieve silicas is developed using nonionic alkylamines and N,N-dimethylalkylamines (SO) as structure-directing agents in acidic conditions. The synthesized mesostructures possess wormhole-like frameworks with pore sizes and pore volumes in the range of 20-90 Angstrom and 0.5-1.3 cm(3)/g, respectively. The formation of the mesophase is controlled by a counterion-mediated mechanism of the type (S(0)H(+))(X(-)I(+)), where S(0)H(+) are protonated water molecules that are hydrogen bonded to the lone electron pairs on the amine surfactant headgroups (S(0)H(+)), X(-) is the counteranion originating from the acid, and I(+) are the positively charged (protonated) silicate species. We found that the stronger the ion X(-) is bonded to S(0)H(+), the more it catalyzes the silica condensation into (S(0)H(+))(X(-)I(+)). Br(-) is shown to be a strong binding anion and therefore a fast silica polymerization promoter compared to Cl(-) resulting in the formation of a higher quality mesophase for the Br(-) syntheses. We also showed that the polymerization rate of the silica, dictated by the counterion, controls the morphology of the mesostructures from nonuniform agglomerated blocks in the case of Br(-) syntheses to spherical particles for the Cl(-) syntheses. Next to many benefits such as low temperature, short synthesis time, and the use of inexpensive, nontoxic, and easily extractable amine templates, the developed materials have a remarkable higher thermal and hydrothermal stability compared to hexagonal mesoporous silica, which is also prepared with nonionic amines but formed through the S(0)I(0) mechanism.

Abstract: Experimental results show that the room-temperature carrier mobility in bulk layers of undoped or Si-doped GaN grown by LP-MOVPE on sapphire substrate shows a sudden increase as soon as the carrier density exceeds a critical value of about 10(18) cm(-3). We show that such a behavior can be theoretically reproduced by assuming that the columnar structure i.e. the dislocation microstructure is responsible for internal electronic barriers. Abstract: The transition Fm (3) over bar m -->Pa (3) over bar in solid C-60 is driven by the condensation of orientational modes belonging to X-5(+) irreducible representations (irreps) of Fm (3) over bar m. Taking into account irreps up to the manifold l = 12, we have studied the primary and secondary orientational order parameters loops). Abstract: We have calculated analytically the spatial distribution of the electric field and current density, and obtained the Joule heat generation rate in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a non-homogeneous magnetic field of a 'chess' configuration. The generation of the Joule heat from the 2DEG is mainly concentrated near the singular corners of each 'chess' field and tends to zero in other corners. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: Infrared absorption spectra of polyhedral and platelet oxygen precipitates are analyzed using a modified Day-Thorpe approach (J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 11 (1999) 2551). The aspect ratio has been determined by TEM measurements. The reduced spectral function and the stoichiometry are extracted from the absorption spectra and the concentration of precipitated interstitial oxygen. One set of spectra reveal a Frohlich frequency around 1100 cm(-1) and another around 1110-1120 cm(-1). It is shown that the shift in the Frohlich frequency is not due to a different stoichiometry, but due to the detailed structure in the reduced spectral function. The oxygen precipitates consist of SiO. with gammaapproximate to1.1-1.2+/-0.1. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Here we summarize results from our study of the critical depinning current J(c) versus the applied magnetic flux Phi, for: (i) quasiperiodic (QP) one-dimensional (1D) chains and (ii) 2D arrays of pinning centers placed on the nodes of a five-fold Penrose lattice. In 1D QP chains, the peaks in J(c)(Phi) are determined by a sequence of harmonics of the long and short segments of the chain. The critical current J(c)(Phi) has a remarkable self-similarity. In 2D QP pinning arrays, we predict analytically and numerically the main features of J(c)(Phi), and demonstrate that the Penrose lattice of pinning sites provides an enormous enhancement of J(c)(Phi), even compared to triangular and random pinning site arrays. This huge increase in J(c)(Phi) could be useful for applications. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“An envelope function formalism for lattice-matched heterostructures”. Van de Put ML, Vandenberghe WG, Magnus W, Sorée B, Physica: B : condensed matter 470-471, 69 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.physb.2015.04.031
Abstract: The envelope function method traditionally employs a single basis set which, in practice, relates to a single material because the k.p matrix elements are generally only known in a particular basis. In this work, we defined a basis function transformation to alleviate this restriction. The transformation is completely described by the known inter-band momentum matrix elements. The resulting envelope function equation can solve the electronic structure in lattice matched heterostructures without resorting to boundary conditions at the interface between materials, while all unit-cell averaged observables can be calculated as with the standard envelope function formalism. In the case of two coupled bands, this heterostructure formalism is equivalent to the standard formalism while taking position dependent matrix elements. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Abstract: We study the effect of a hydrogen atom on the thermal stability of a trapped CH3 molecule on graphene using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Due to the hydrogen-molecule interaction, enhanced pinning of the CH3 molecule is observed when it is positioned adjacent to the graphene site with the hydrogen atom. We discuss the formation process of such a stable configuration, which originates from different adhesion and migration energies of the hydrogen atom and the CH3 molecule. We also studied the effect of the CH3-H configuration on the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons using first principles density-functional calculations. We found that the formation of the CH3-H structure results in extra features in the transmission spectrum due to the formation of strongly localized states, which are absent when the CH3 molecule is trapped on pristine graphene. Our findings will be useful in exploiting gas sensing properties of graphene, especially for selective detection of individual molecules. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: It is well-known that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory is a reliable and powerful theoretical tool to investigate the magnetic response of a superconducting state. However, in its standard form, this approach is not applicable to atomically uniform nano-thin superconducting films which are effective multiband superconductors. Here we discuss a relevant generalization of the GL theory, focusing on the underlying intraband-pairing approximation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“Hyperfine electric parameters calculation in Si samples implanted with 57Mn\rightarrow57Fe”. Abreu Y, Cruz CM, Pinera I, Leyva A, Cabal AE, van Espen P, Van Remortel N, Physica: B : condensed matter 445, 1 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.PHYSB.2014.03.028
Abstract: Nowadays the electronic structure calculations allow the study of complex systems determining the hyperfine parameters measured at a probe atom, including the presence of crystalline defects. The hyperfine electric parameters have been measured by Mossbauer spectroscopy in silicon materials implanted with Mn-57 ->,Fe-57 ions, observing four main contributions to the spectra. Nevertheless, some ambiguities still remain in the Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra interpretation in this case, regarding the damage configurations and its evolution with annealing. In the present work several implantation environments are evaluated and the Fe-57 hyperfine parameters are calculated. The observed correlation among the studied local environments and the experimental observations is presented, and a tentative microscopic description of the behavior and thermal evolution of the characteristic defects local environments of the probe atoms concerning the location of vacancies and interstitial Si in the neighborhood of Fe-57 ions in substitutional and interstitial sites is proposed.
