Abstract: 6H SiC single crystals were implanted al room temperature with 1 MeV He+ up to a fluence of 2 x 10(17) at./cm(2) RBS-channeling analysis with a 2 MeV He+ beam indicated the formation of extended defects or the generation of point defects at a constant concentration over a depth of about 1 mu m. Electron microscopy characterisation revealed the presence of two amorphous buried layers at depths of about 1,75 and 4.8 mu m. They an due to the implantation and to the analysing RES beam, respectively, No extended planar or linear faults were found in the region between the surface and the first amorphous layer. However, at the surface, a 50 nm thick amorphous layer was observed in which crystalline inclusions were embedded. Electron diffraction and HREM data of the inclusions were typical for diamond, These inclusions were even found in the crystalline SiC material below this layer, however at a reduced density.

Abstract: An important part of the European cultural heritage is composed of hand-written documents. Many of these documents were drawn up with iron-gall ink. This type of ink present a serious conservation problem, as it slowly oxidizes ('burns') the paper it is written on, thereby gradually disintegrating the historic document. Acid hydrolysis of the cellulose and/or the oxidation of organic compounds promoted by radical intermediates that are formed due to the presence of Fe2+ ions are considered to be the cause of the disintegration. mu-XANES measurements were performed with a lateral resolution of 30-50 mum in order to determine the local Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio in 19th C. documents from the Austrian National Archives and fragments of 16th C documents from the Polish National Library. In the 19th C documents, no significant amount of Fe2+ was detected. On the other hand, in the 16th C fragments, significant amounts of Fe2+ and appreciable differences in distribution of Fe2+ and Fe3+ within individual letters/ink stains were observed. Abstract: A novel infrared absorption method has been developed to measure [he interstitial oxygen concentration in highly doped silicon. Thin samples of the order of 10-30 mu m are prepared in an essentially stress-free state without changing the state of the crystal. The oxygen concentration is then determined by measuring the height of the 1136-cm(-1) absorption peak due to interstitial oxygen at 5.5 K. The obtained results on as-grown samples are compared with those from gas fusion analysis. The precipitated oxygen concentration in annealed samples is also determined with the new method. It will be shown that the interstitial oxygen concentration in highly doped silicon can be determined with high accuracy and down to concentrations of 10(17) cm(-3). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: A large number of materials have a highly degenerate ground state and therefore a complex microstructure. Because of this degenerate state, phase transitions between the different phases play an important role. High resolution techniques in electron microscopy and nano-scale chemical analysis allow to study not only the microstructure but also the interfaces down to an atomic scale. We focus particularly on the ambiguity of alloys oil approaching the phase transition. The short range order (SRO) in ''1 1/20'' type alloys and the microstructure of ''tweed'' and needle formation in martensite like alloys with composition Ni5Al3 are considered in more detail.

Abstract: The engineering, construction, performance and running costs of a catalytic flue gas cleaning component in the low dust area of a municipal waste incinerator is discussed. For this purpose, the case study of a Flemish incineration plant is presented, covering the history, the design procedure of the catalyst, relevant process data and the financial aspects. A reliable PCDD/F-destruction by means of oxidation by the catalyst to typical values of 0.001 ng TEQ/Nm3 has been demonstrated. At the same time, NOx− and CO-emissions are reduced by 90% and 20% to about 50 mg/Nm3 and below 10 mg/Nm3, respectively.

Abstract: Fourier transform laser microprobe mass spectrometry (FT LMMS) has been developed for the molecular analysis of both organic and inorganic components at the surface of microobjects with the ultimate specificity of high-mass resolution. These capabilities are needed in numerous applications of practical material analysis, such as tracing back anomalies in microobjects. The purpose of this paper is to address representative example from industrial trouble shooting, in which organic and inorganic analytes in a single microparticle have been identified unambiguously. This motivates the research to extend the methodology towards quantification. This paper deals with the fundamental aspect of information depth, specifically for inorganic molecular adduct ions. Finally, data will show the quantitative capabilities of FT LMMS. A suitable methodology for the preparation of reference specimens has allowed the empirical calibration of the response as a function of the local concentration to be achieved.

Abstract: Gas discharge plasmas are used for a wide range of applications. To improve our understanding about gas discharges, which is necessary to obtain good results in the various application fields, we perform numerical modelling of gas discharge plasmas. Various kinds of modelling approaches, for various types of gas discharges, are being used in our group. In this paper, some examples of this modelling work are outlined.
