Abstract: Transitions between different multivortex states and transitions between multivortex states and giant vortex states are observed in mesoscopic superconducting disks using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method. These results are compared to theoretical calculations within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We find a good qualitative agreement between the theoretical and experimental results, when we assume that a small defect is present near the center of the experimental sample. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: On the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation we studied the dynamics of the superconducting condensate in a wide two-dimensional sample in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and applied current. We could identify two critical currents: the current at which the pure superconducting state becomes unstable (J(c2)(1)) and the current at which the system transits from the resistive state to the superconducting state (J(c1) < J(c2)). The current J(c2) decreases monotonically with external magnetic field, while J(c1) exhibits a maximum at H*. For sufficient large magnetic fields the hysteresis disappears and J(c1) = J(c2) = Jc. In this high magnetic field region and for currents close to Jc the voltage appears as a result of the motion of separate vortices. With increasing current the moving vortices form, channels' with suppressed order parameter along which the vortices can move very fast. This leads to a sharp increase of the voltage. These 'channels' resemble in some respect the phase slip lines which occur at zero magnetic field. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a mesoscopic loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an instability. Numerical analysis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations shows that the absolute value of the order parameter changes gradually at the transition from a state with one phase circulation to another although the vorticity change occurs abruptly. Abstract: The inherent interlayer freedom in van der Waals stacked materials provides an excellent opportunity to investigate ferroelectric-like behavior through interlayer translation. Based on first-principles calculations, we find that the interlayer sliding in Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) bilayer enables the coexistence of polarization, metallicity, and ferromagnetism. We find that the polarization is induced by the uncompensated vertical interlayer charge transfer, and can be switched by an in-plane interlayer sliding. A moderate biaxial strain can reverse the polarization direction of the sliding FGT bilayer. The vertical polarization disentangles with the in-plane conductivity as was previously seen in the sliding ferroelectric WTe2 bilayer. Our work proposes an extremely rare magnetic ferroelectric metal phase that is useful for magnetoelectric and spintronic applications.

Abstract: The envelope function method traditionally employs a single basis set which, in practice, relates to a single material because the k.p matrix elements are generally only known in a particular basis. In this work, we defined a basis function transformation to alleviate this restriction. The transformation is completely described by the known inter-band momentum matrix elements. The resulting envelope function equation can solve the electronic structure in lattice matched heterostructures without resorting to boundary conditions at the interface between materials, while all unit-cell averaged observables can be calculated as with the standard envelope function formalism. In the case of two coupled bands, this heterostructure formalism is equivalent to the standard formalism while taking position dependent matrix elements. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Abstract: We study the effect of a hydrogen atom on the thermal stability of a trapped CH3 molecule on graphene using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Due to the hydrogen-molecule interaction, enhanced pinning of the CH3 molecule is observed when it is positioned adjacent to the graphene site with the hydrogen atom. We discuss the formation process of such a stable configuration, which originates from different adhesion and migration energies of the hydrogen atom and the CH3 molecule. We also studied the effect of the CH3-H configuration on the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons using first principles density-functional calculations. We found that the formation of the CH3-H structure results in extra features in the transmission spectrum due to the formation of strongly localized states, which are absent when the CH3 molecule is trapped on pristine graphene. Our findings will be useful in exploiting gas sensing properties of graphene, especially for selective detection of individual molecules. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: It is well-known that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory is a reliable and powerful theoretical tool to investigate the magnetic response of a superconducting state. However, in its standard form, this approach is not applicable to atomically uniform nano-thin superconducting films which are effective multiband superconductors. Here we discuss a relevant generalization of the GL theory, focusing on the underlying intraband-pairing approximation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Nowadays the electronic structure calculations allow the study of complex systems determining the hyperfine parameters measured at a probe atom, including the presence of crystalline defects. The hyperfine electric parameters have been measured by Mossbauer spectroscopy in silicon materials implanted with Mn-57 ->,Fe-57 ions, observing four main contributions to the spectra. Nevertheless, some ambiguities still remain in the Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra interpretation in this case, regarding the damage configurations and its evolution with annealing. In the present work several implantation environments are evaluated and the Fe-57 hyperfine parameters are calculated. The observed correlation among the studied local environments and the experimental observations is presented, and a tentative microscopic description of the behavior and thermal evolution of the characteristic defects local environments of the probe atoms concerning the location of vacancies and interstitial Si in the neighborhood of Fe-57 ions in substitutional and interstitial sites is proposed. Abstract: We consider the effects of three different types of applied compressive stress on the structural, electronic and optical properties of rutile SnO2. We use standard density functional theory (OFT) to determine the structural parameters. The effective masses and the electronic band gap, as well as their stress derivatives, are computed within both DFT and many-body perturbation theory (MBPT). The stress derivatives for the SnO2 direct band gap are determined to be 62, 38 and 25 meV/GPa within MBPT for applied hydrostatic, biaxial and uniaxial stress, respectively. Compared to DFT, this is a clear improvement with respect to available experimental data. We also estimate the exciton binding energies and their stress coefficients and compute the absorption spectrum by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The effect of heat treatment on the structure and luminescence of Ag nanoclusters doped oxyfluoride glasses was studied and the implication for drawing the corresponding fibers doped with luminescent Ag nanoclusters has been proposed. The heat treatment results, first, in condensation of the Ag nanoclusters into larger Ag nanoparticles and loss of Ag luminescence, and further heat treatment results in precipitation of a luminescent-loss nano- and microcrystalline Ag phases onto the surface of the glass. Thus, the oxyfluoride fiber doped with luminescent Ag nanoclusters was pulled from the viscous glass melt and its attenuation loss was 0.19 dB/cm in the red part of the spectrum; i.e. near to the maximum of Ag nanoclusters luminescence band. The nucleation centers for the Ag nanoclusters in oxyfluoride glasses have been suggested to be the fluorine vacancies and their nanoclusters.

“Infrared to terahertz absorption window in mono- and multi-layer graphene systems”. Xiao YM, Xu W, Peeters FM, Optics communications 328, 135 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.optcom.2014.04.079
Abstract: We present a theoretical study on optical properties such as optical conductance and light transmission coefficient for mono- and multi-layer graphene systems with AB- and ABC-stacking. Considering an air/graphene/dielectric-water structure, the optical coefficients for those graphene systems are examined and compared. The universal optical conductance sigma(N)(0)=N pi e(2)/(2h) for N layer graphene systems in the visible region is verified. For N 3 layer graphene, the mini-gap induced absorption edges can be observed in odd layers AB-stacked multilayer graphene, where the number and position of the absorption edges are decided by the layers number N. Meanwhile, we can observe the optical absorption windows for those graphene systems in the infrared to terahertz bandwidth (0.2-150 THz). The absorption window is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption channels. We find that the depth and width of the absorption window can be tuned not only via varying temperature and electron density but also by changing the number of graphene layers and the stacking order. These theoretical findings demonstrate that mono- and multi-layer graphene systems can be applied as frequency tunable optoelectronic devices working in infrared to terahertz bandwidth. “Gamma induced atom displacements in LYSO and LuYAP crystals as used in medical imaging applications”. Pinera I, Cruz CM, Abreu Y, Leyva A, van Espen P, Diaz A, Cabal AE, Van Remortel N, Interactions With Materials And Atoms 356, 46 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.NIMB.2015.04.063
Abstract: The radiation damage, in terms of atom displacements, induced by gamma irradiation in LYSO and LuYAP crystals is presented. Sc-44, Na-22 and V-48 are used as gamma sources for this study. The energy of gammas from the electron positron annihilation processes (511 keV) is also included in the study. The atom displacements distributions inside each material are calculated following the Monte Carlo assisted Classical Method introduced by the authors. This procedure also allows to study the atom displacements in-depth distributions inside each crystal. The atom displacements damage in LYSO crystals is found to be higher than in LuYAP crystals, mainly provoked by the displacements of silicon and oxygen atoms. But the difference between atom displacements produced in LYSO and LuYAP decreases when more energetic sources are used. On the other hand, the correlation between the atom displacements and energy deposition in-depth distributions is excellent. The atom displacements to energy deposition ratio is found to increases with more energetic photon sources. LYSO crystals are then more liable to the atom displacements damage than LuYAP crystals. “Improved calculation of displacements per atom cross section in solids by gamma and electron irradiation”. Pinera I, Cruz CM, Leyva A, Abreu Y, Cabal AE, van Espen P, Van Remortel N, Interactions With Materials And Atoms 339, 1 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.NIMB.2014.08.020
Abstract: Several authors had estimated the displacements per atom cross sections under different approximations and models, including most of the main gamma- and electron-material interaction processes. These previous works used numerical approximation formulas which are applicable for limited energy ranges. We proposed the Monte Carlo assisted Classical Method (MCCM), which relates the established theories about atom displacements to the electron and positron secondary fluence distributions calculated from the Monte Carlo simulation. In this study the MCCM procedure is adapted in order to estimate the displacements per atom cross sections for gamma and electron irradiation. The results obtained through this procedure are compared with previous theoretical calculations. An improvement in about 10-90% for the gamma irradiation induced dpa cross section is observed in our results on regard to the previous evaluations for the studied incident energies. On the other hand, the dpa cross section values produced by irradiation with electrons are improved by our calculations in about 5-50% when compared with the theoretical approximations. When thin samples are irradiated with electrons, more precise results are obtained through the MCCM (in about 20-70%) with respect to the previous studies. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“Study of dpa distributions in electron irradiated YBCO slabs through MCCM algorithm”. Piñera I, Cruz CM, van Espen P, Abreu Y, Leyva A, Nuclear instruments and methods in physics research: B: beam interactions with materials and atoms 274, 191 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.NIMB.2011.11.021
Abstract: The Monte Carlo assisted Classical Method (MCCM) consists on a calculation procedure for determining the displacements per atom (dpa) distribution in solid materials. This algorithm allows studying the gamma and electron irradiation damage in different materials. It is based on the electrons elastic scattering classic theories and the use of Monte Carlo simulation for the physical processes involved. The present study deals with the Monte Carlo simulation of electron irradiation effects on YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) slabs using the MCNPX code system. Displacements per atom distributions are obtained through the MCCM for electron irradiation up to 10 MeV. In-depth dpa profiles for electrons and positrons are obtained and analysed. Also, dpa contributions from each atomic specie in the material are calculated. It was found that the dpa distribution is more homogeneous in the material volume when increasing energy of incident electrons. Also, the dpa produced by positrons has no relevance when irradiating with electrons, in contrast with previous similar gamma irradiation studies. All the results are presented and discussed in this contribution. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The structure and surface morphology of aluminum and silver mirrors covered with protective dielectric oxide layer were studied by means of TEM and SEM. The presence of needle-like pores throughout the thickness of the ZrO(2) film and bubble-like pores in Al(2)O(3) was observed. The test for resistivity to deuterium ion bombardment shows that the exposition to a fluence of similar to 2 x 10(20) ions/cm(2) with the ion energy of 40-50 eV results in appearance of blisters on the surface of mirrors covered wit h Al(2)O(3). For the mirrors protected with ZrO(2) no noticeable changes in surface morphology and reflectivity were found even after order of magnitude higher ion fluence. The effect of different porous structures on blistering phenomena is discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Determination of count losses and pile-up pulse effects in quantitative and qualitative analysis became a vital step in various analyses. Therefore, compensating for counting losses is of importance. These counting losses are due to the pulse pile-up, paralyzable and non-paralyzable system dead time or a combination of these mechanisms. In this work, a new method is suggested for the correction of dead time losses resulting from the above mechanisms. For this purpose, a source code was developed. It was found that the peaking time was an important parameter over system dead time. The method suggested seems to be more effective even at high count rate. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
