“Original close-packed structure and magnetic properties of the Pb4Mn9O20 manganite”. Abakumov AM, Hadermann J, Tsirlin AA, Tan H, Verbeeck J, Zhang H, Dikarev EV, Shpanchenko RV, Antipov EV, Journal of solid state chemistry 182, 2231 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2009.06.003
Abstract: The crystal structure of the Pb4Mn9O20 compound (previously known as Pb0.43MnO2.18) was solved from powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and high resolution electron microscopy data (S.G. Pnma, a=13.8888(2) Å, b=11.2665(2) Å, c=9.9867(1) Å, RI=0.016, RP=0.047). The structure is based on a 6H (cch)2 close packing of pure oxygen h-type (O16) layers alternating with mixed c-type (Pb4O12) layers. The Mn atoms occupy octahedral interstices formed by the oxygen atoms of the close-packed layers. The MnO6 octahedra share edges within the layers, whereas the octahedra in neighboring layers are linked through corner sharing. The relationship with the closely related Pb3Mn7O15 structure is discussed. Magnetization measurements reveal a peculiar magnetic behavior with a phase transition at 52 K, a small net magnetization below the transition temperature, and a tendency towards spin freezing.

“Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 anion-deficient layered perovskite”. d' Hondt H, Hadermann J, Abakumov AM, Kalyuzhnaya AS, Rozova MG, Tsirlin AA, Tan H, Verbeeck J, Antipov EV, Van Tendeloo G, Journal of solid state chemistry 182, 356 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2008.11.002
Abstract: A new layered perovskite Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 has been synthesized by solid state reaction in a sealed evacuated silica tube. The crystal structure has been determined using electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, and high-angle annular dark field imaging and refined from X-ray powder diffraction data (space group P4/mmm, a=3.89023(5) Å, c=7.8034(1) Å, RI=0.023, RP=0.015). The structure is characterized by an alternation of MnO2 and (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers. Oxygen atoms and vacancies, as well as the Al and Mn atoms in the (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers are disordered. The local atomic arrangement in these layers is suggested to consist of short fragments of brownmillerite-type tetrahedral chains of corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra interrupted by MnO6 octahedra, at which the chain fragments rotate over 90°. This results in an averaged tetragonal symmetry. This is confirmed by the valence state of Mn measured by EELS. The relationship between the Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 tetragonal perovskite and the parent Sr2Al1.07Mn0.93O5 brownmillerite is discussed. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate spin glass behavior of Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2. The lack of long-range magnetic ordering contrasts with Mn-containing brownmillerites and is likely caused by the frustration of interlayer interactions due to presence of the Mn atoms in the (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers.

“New anion-conducting solid solutions Bi1-xTex(O,F)2+\delta (x >, 0.5) and glassceramic material on their base”. Prituzhalov VA, Ardashnikova EI, Vinogradov AA, Dolgikh VA, Videau J-J, Fargin E, Abakumov AM, Tarakina NV, Van Tendeloo G, Journal of fluorine chemistry 132, 1110 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jfluchem.2011.06.042
Abstract: The anion-excess fluorite-like solid solutions with general composition Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ (x > 0.5) have been synthesized by a solid state reaction of TeO2, BiF3 and Bi2O3 at 873 K with following quenching. The homogeneity areas and polymorphism of the I ↔ IV Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phases were investigated. The crystal structure of the low temperature IV-Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase has been solved using electron diffraction and X-ray powder diffraction (a = 11.53051(9) Å, S.G. Ia-3, RI = 0.046, RP = 0.041). Glass formation area in the Bi2O3BiF3TeO2 (10% TiO2) system was investigated. IVBi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase starts to crystallize at short-time (0.53 h) annealing of oxyfluoride glasses at temperatures above Tg (600615 K). The ionic conductivity of the crystalline Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase and corresponding glass-ceramics was investigated. Activation energy of conductivity Ea = 0.41(2) eV for the IV-Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ crystalline samples and Ea = 0.73 eV for the glass-ceramic samples were obtained. Investigation of the oxyfluoride samples with a constant cation ratio demonstrates essential influence of excess fluorine anions on the ionic conductivity.

“Pd5InSe and Pd8In2Se : new metal-rich homological selenides with 2D palladium-indium fragments : synthesis, structure and bonding”. Zakharova EY, Kazakov SM, Isaeva AA, Abakumov AM, Van Tendeloo G, Kuznetsov AN, Journal of alloys and compounds 589, 48 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jallcom.2013.11.172
Abstract: Two new metal-rich palladium-indium selenides, Pd5InSe and Pd8In2Se, were synthesized using a high-temperature ampoule technique. Their crystal structures were determined from Rietveld analysis of powder diffraction data, supported by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction. Both compounds crystallize in tetragonal system with P4/mmm space group (Pd5InSe: a = 4.0290(3) angstrom, c = 6.9858(5) angstrom, Z = 1; Pd8In2Se: a = 4.0045(4) angstrom, c = 10.952(1) angstrom, Z = 1). The first compound belongs to the Pd5TlAs structure type, while the second one – to a new structure type. Main structural units in both selenides are indium-centered [Pd12In] cuboctahedra of the tetragonally distorted Cu3Au type, single-and double-stacked along the c axis in Pd5InSe and Pd8In2Se, respectively, alternating with [Pd8Se] rectangular prisms. DFT electronic structure calculations predict both compounds to be 3D metallic conductors and Pauli-like paramagnets. According to the bonding analysis based on the electron localization function topology, both compounds feature multi-centered palladium-indium interactions in their heterometallic fragments. “Oxidation potential in the Earth's lower mantle as recorded by ferropericlase inclusions in diamond”. Kaminsky FV, Ryabchikov ID, McCammon CA, Longo M, Abakumov AM, Turner S, Heidari H, Earth and planetary science letters 417, 49 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2015.02.029
Abstract: Ferropericlase (fPer) inclusions from kimberlitic lower-mantle diamonds recovered in the Juina area, Mato Grosso State, Brazil were analyzed with transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy and the flank method. The presence of exsolved non-stoichiometric Fe3+-enriched clusters, varying in size from 1-2 nm to 10-15 nm and comprising similar to 3.64 vol.% of fPer was established. The oxidation conditions necessary for fPer formation within the uppermost lower mantle (P = 25 GPa, T = 1960 K) vary over a wide range: Delta log f(o2) (IW) from 1.58 to 7.76 (Delta = 6.2), reaching the fayalite-magnetite-quartz (FMQ) oxygen buffer position. This agrees with the identification of carbonates and free silica among inclusions within lower-mantle Juina diamonds. On the other hand, at the base of the lower mantle Delta log f(o2) values may lie at and below the iron-wustite (IW) oxygen buffer. Hence, the variations of Delta log f(o2) values within the entire sequence of the lower mantle may reach ten logarithmic units, varying from the IW buffer to the FMQ buffer values. The similarity between lower- and upper-mantle redox conditions supports whole mantle convection, as already suggested on the basis of nitrogen and carbon isotopic compositions in lower- and upper-mantle diamonds. The mechanisms responsible for redox differentiation in the lower mantle may include subduction of oxidized crustal material, mechanical separation of metallic phase(s) and silicate-oxide mineral assemblages enriched in ferric iron, as well as transfer of fused silicate-oxide material presumably also enriched in ferric iron through the mantle. “Li-ion diffusion in LixNb9PO25”. Drozhzhin OA, Vorotyntsev MA, Maduar SR, Khasanova NR, Abakumov AM, Antipov EV, Electrochimica acta 89, 262 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.electacta.2012.11.017
Abstract: Wadsley-Roth phase LixNb6PO25 has been studied as a potential candidate for anode material of Li-ion batteries. Its crystal structure, which consists of ReO3-type blocks of NbO6 octahedra connected with PO4 tetrahedra, provides a good stability and performance during Li+ insertion/removal. Li-ion chemical diffusion coefficient (D-chem) in LixNb6PO25 was determined by means of potentiostatic intermittent titration technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Different data treatments (classical Warburg equation or the model of an electrode system with ohmic potential drop and/or slow kinetics of the interfacial Li+ ion transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface) were used for calculation of D-chem of the Li ion inside this material; their applicability is discussed in the article. D-chem changes with the Li-ion doping degree, x, in LixNb3PO25 and has a sharp minimum near the two-phase region at appr. 1.7V vs. Li+/Li. These values of D-chem in LixNb9PO25 (similar to 10(-9)-10(-11) cm(2) s(-1)) were found to be in average noticeably higher than in the widely studied anode material, Li4Ti5O12. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. “Photocatalytic process optimisation for ethylene oxidation”. Tytgat T, Hauchecorne B, Abakumov AM, Smits M, Verbruggen SW, Lenaerts S, Chemical engineering journal 209, 494 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.cej.2012.08.032
Abstract: When studying photocatalysis it is important to consider, beside the chemical approach, the engineering part related to process optimisation. To achieve this a fixed bed photocatalytic set-up consisting of different catalyst placings, in order to vary catalyst distribution, is studied. The use of a fixed quantity of catalyst placed packed or randomly distributed in the reactor, results in an almost double degradation for the distributed catalyst. Applying this knowledge leads to an improved performance with limited use of catalyst. A reactor only half filled with catalyst leads to higher degradation performance compared to a completely filled reactor. Taking into account this simple process optimisation by better distributing the catalyst a more sustainable photocatalytic air purification process is achieved. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The complex oxide Ca7Mn2.14Ga5.86O17.93 was synthesized by the solid-state reaction in a sealed evacuated quartz tube at 1000 °C. Its crystal structure was determined by electron diffraction and X-ray powder diffraction. The structure can be represented as a tetrahedral framework, viz., the polyanion [(Mn0.285Ga0.715)15O29.86]19- stabilized by the incorporated cation [Ca14GaO6]19+. The polycation consists of the GaO6 octahedra surrounded by the Ca atoms, which are arranged to form a cube capped at all places. The tetrahedral framework is partially disordered due to the presence of tetrahedra with two possible orientations in the positions (0, 0, 0) and (x, x, x) with x ≈ 0.15 and 0.17. The relationship between the Ca7Mn2.14Ga5.86O17.93 structures and related ordered phases with the symmetry F23, as well as the influence of the oxygen content on the ordering in the tetrahedral framework, are discussed.

Abstract: BSA-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles with different hydrodynamic diameters (36 +/- 4 and 85 +/- 10 nm) were synthesized, zeta potential and T2 relaxivity were determined, and their morphology was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Studies on rats with experimental glioma C6 showed that smaller nanoparticles more effectively accumulated in the tumor and circulated longer in brain vessels. Optimization of the hydrodynamic diameter improves the efficiency of MRT contrast agent.
