Abstract: We present a first-principles computational study of CO and OH adsorption on non-polar ZnO (10¯10) surfaces doped with indium. The calculations were performed using a model ZnO slab. The position of the In dopants was varied from deep bulk-like layers to
the surface layers. It was established that the preferential location of the In atoms is at the surface by examining the dependence of
the defect formation energy as well as the surface energy on In location. The adsorption sites on the surface of ZnO and the energy
of adsorption of CO molecules and OH-species were determined in connection to In doping. It was found that OH has higher
bonding energy to the surface than CO. The presence of In atoms at the surface of ZnO is favorable for CO adsorption, resulting
in an elongation of the C-O bond and in charge transfer to the surface. The effect of CO and OH adsorption on the electronic
and conduction properties of surfaces was assessed. We conclude that In-doped ZnO surfaces should present a higher electronic
response upon adsorption of CO.

Abstract: The presence of iodide ions during the growth of gold nanorods strongly affects the shape of the final products, which is proposed to be due to selective iodide adsorption on certain crystallographic facets. Therefore, a detailed structural and morphological characterization of the starting rods is crucial toward understanding this effect. Electron tomography is used to determine the crystallographic indices of the lateral facets of gold nanorods, as well as those present at the tips. Based on this information, density functional theory calculations are used to determine the surface and interface energies of the observed facets and provide insight into the relationship between the amount of iodide ions in the growth solution and the final morphology of anisotropic gold nanoparticles.

Abstract: The properties of free-standing silicon and germanium nanowires oriented along the [110] direction are studied using different first principles methods. We show the corrections due to quasi-particles to the band structures obtained using the local-density approximation. The formation energies of B and P doped nanowires are calculated, both in the absence and presence of dangling bond defects and we link these to experimental results. Furthermore, we report on the phonon properties of pure Si and Ge nanowires, as well as Ge/Si core-shell nanowires, and discuss the differences between them.

Abstract: We study the electronic properties of commensurate faulted bilayer graphene by diagonalizing the one-particle Hamiltonian of the bilayer system in a complete basis of Bloch states of the individual graphene layers. Our novel approach is very general and can be easily extended to any commensurate graphene-based heterostructure. Here, we consider three cases: (i) twisted bilayer graphene, (ii) bilayer graphene where triaxial stress is applied to one layer and (iii) bilayer graphene where uniaxial stress is applied to one layer. We show that the resulting superstructures can be divided into distinct classes, depending on the twist angle or the magnitude of the induced strain. The different classes are distinguished from each other by the interlayer coupling mechanism, resulting in fundamentally different low-energy physics. For the cases of triaxial and uniaxial stress, the individual graphene layers tend to decouple and we find significant charge transfer between the layers. In addition, this piezoelectric effect can be tuned by applying a perpendicular electric field. Finally, we show how our approach can be generalized to multilayer systems.

Abstract: We present model calculations based on a coherent tunneling picture, which reproduce well both the single-particle energy level position and the resonant current strength at two typical anticrossings, one involving two levels and the other three levels in a coherent mixer composed of two weakly coupled vertical quantum dots. An essential ingredient is the inclusion of higher degree terms to account for deviations from an ideal elliptical parabolic confining potential in realistic dots. We also calculate density plots of the mixed states for the modified potential.

Abstract: We show by extensive numerical simulations, that far-from-equilibrium experiments on dusty plasmas and on dipole particles in a circular cavity are good candidates for the verification of the Jarzynski equality, the Crooks relation and, to a lesser extent, of the recently obtained microscopic expression for the dissipated work.

Abstract: Using first-principles density functional theory, we investigate the dynamical properties of the roomtemperature P21/n and ground-state P21/c phases of WO3. As a preliminary step, we assess the validity of various standard and hybrid functionals, concluding that the best description is achieved with the B1-WC hybrid functional while a reliable description can also be provided using the standard LDA functional. We also carefully rediscuss the structure and energetics of all experimentally observed and a few hypothetical metastable phases in order to provide deeper insight into the unusual sequence of phase transition of WO3 with temperature. Then, we provide a comprehensive theoretical study of the lattice dynamical properties of the P21/n and P21/c phases, reporting zone-center phonons, infrared and Raman spectra, as well as the full phonon dispersion curves, which attest to the dynamical stability of both phases. We carefully discuss the spectra, explaining the physical origin of their main features and evolution from one phase to another. We reveal a systematic connection between the dynamical and structural properties of WO3, highlighting that the number of peaks in the high-frequency range of the Raman spectrum appears as a fingerprint of the number of antipolar distortions that are present in the structure and a practical way to discriminate between the different phases.

Abstract: We study the effect of structural inversion asymmetry, induced by the presence of substrates or by external electric fields, on charge transport in magnetic topological ultra-thin films. We consider general orientations of the magnetic impurities. Our results are based on the Boltzmann formalism along with a modified relaxation time scheme. We show that the structural inversion asymmetry enhances the charge transport anisotropy induced by the magnetic impurities and when only one conduction subband contributes to the charge transport a dissipationless charge current is accessible. We demonstrate how a substrate or gate voltage can control the effect of the magnetic impurities on the charge transport, and how this depends on the orientation of the magnetic impurities.
