Title Effect of halide-mixing on the electronic transport properties of organometallic perovskites Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Using density-functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we study the effect of iodide/chloride and iodide/bromide mixing on the electronic transport in lead based organometallic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3, which is known to be an effective tool to tune the electronic and optical properties of such materials. We found that depending on the level and position of the halide mixing, the electronic transport can be increased by more than a factor of 4 for a given voltage biasing. The largest current is observed for small concentration of bromide substitutions located at the equatorial sites. However, full halide substitution has a negative effect on the transport properties of this material: the current drops by an order of magnitude for both CH3NH3PbCl3 and CH3NH3PbBr3 samples.   Abstract Using density-functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we study the effect of the crystal lattice structure of organometallic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 on its electronic transport properties. Both dispersive interactions and spin-orbit coupling are taken into account in describing structural and electronic properties of the system. We consider two different phases of the material, namely the orthorhombic and cubic lattice structures, which are energetically stable at low (< 160 K) and high (> 330 K) temperatures, respectively. The sizable geometrical differences between the two structures in term of lattice parameters, PbI6 octahedral tilts, rotation and deformations, have considerable impact on the transport properties of the material. For example, at zero bias and for all considered electron energies, the cubic phase has a larger transmission than the orthorhombic one, although both show similar electronic densities of states. Depending on the applied voltage, the current in the cubic system can be several orders of magnitude larger as compared to the one obtained for the orthorhombic sample. We attribute this enhancement in the transmission to the presence of extended states in the cubic phase due to the symmetrically shaped and ordered PbI6 octaherdra. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.   Title Effect of halogenation on the electronic transport properties of aromatic and alkanethiolate molecules Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Quantum transport calculations are conducted using nonequilibrium Green's functional formalism to study the effect of halogenation on the electronic transport properties of aromatic S-(C6H5)(2)X and alkanethiolate S-(CH2)(11)X molecules (with X = H, F, Cl, Br, or I) sandwiched between gold electrodes. In terms of conductance, both molecules show the same dependence on the halogen terminal groups despite their different electronic nature. For example, fluorination results in a reduction of the current by almost an order of magnitude, whereas iodine substitution leads to larger current as compared to the reference system (i.e. hydrogen termination). Regarding the asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristics, halogenation reduces the rectification level for the aromatic molecule with the smallest asymmetry for iodine termination. However, in the case of alkanethiolate molecule, halogen substitution increases the current rectification except for fluorination. A physical explanation of these results is obtained from the analysis of the behavior of the density of states, transmission spectra and transmission eigenstates. These findings are of practical importance in exploring the potential of halogenation for creating functional molecular self-assemblies on metallic substrates.

Abstract We conduct ballistic transport calculations to study the electronic transport properties of diazatriptycene molecule which can be self-assembled on metallic surfaces with uniform coverage and upright orientation of the functional head group. Due to its structural asymmetry, the molecule shows a clear current rectification, where the level of the rectification depends on the nature of the head group. For example, current rectification can be increased by more than a factor of 2 by anchoring the molecules to the electrode by CN functional group or introducing insulating CH2 group between the thiol end group and the adjacent phenyl ring. Our findings show the possibility of creating self-assembled monolayer of DAT molecules with controlled electronic transport properties through functionalization of the head group.

Title Wave packet propagation through branched quantum rings under applied magnetic fields Type A1 Journal article

Abstract We investigate the effect of opening and closing pathways on the dynamics of electron wave packets in semiconductor quantum rings with different geometries. Our analysis is based on the time evolution of an electron wave packet, within the effective-mass approximation. We demonstrate that opening an extra channel in the quantum ring does not necessarily improve the electron transmission and, depending on the extra channel width, may even reduce it, either due to enhancement of quantum scattering or due to interference. In the latter case, transmission reduction can be controlled through the Aharonov-Bohm phase of the wave function, via an applied magnetic field. It is also shown that, closing one of the channels of the quantum ring, system improves the transmission probability under specific conditions, an effect which is a quantum analog of the Braess paradox.

Title Photo-excited carriers and optical conductance and transmission in graphene in the presence of phonon scattering Type A1 Journal article

Abstract We present a theoretical study of the optoelectronic properties of monolayer graphene. Including the effect of the electron-photon-phonon scattering, we employ the mass- and energy-balance equations derived from the Boltzmann equation to evaluate self-consistently the carrier densities, optical conductance and transmission coefficient in graphene in the presence of linearly polarized radiation field. We find that the photo-excited carrier density can be increased under infrared radiation and depend strongly on radiation intensity and frequency. For short wavelengths (lambda <3 mu m), the universal optical conductance sigma(0) = e(2)/4h is obtained and the light transmittance is about 0.97-0.98. Interestingly, there is an optical absorption window in the range 4-100 mu m which is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption. The position and width of this absorption window depend sensitively on temperature and carrier density of the system. These results are relevant for applications of recently developed graphene devices in advanced optoelectronics such as the infrared photodetectors. Crown Copyright (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V.   Abstract Exciton states in self-assembled InP/In0.49Ga0.51P quantum dots subject to magnetic fields up to 50T are calculated. Strain and band mixing are explicitly taken into account in the single-particle models of the electronic structure, while an exact diagonalization approach is adopted to compute the exciton states. Reasonably good agreement with magneto-photoluminescence measurements on InP self-assembled quantum dots is found. As a result of the polarization and angular momentum sensitive selection rules, the exciton ground state is dark. For in-plane polarized light, the magnetic field barely affects the exciton spatial localization, and consequently the exciton oscillator strength for recombination increases only slightly with increasing field. For z polarized light, a sharp increase of the oscillator strength beyond 30 T is found which is attributed to the enhanced s character of the relevant portion of the exciton wave function.   Abstract Wigner molecules formed at high magnetic fields in circular and elliptic quantum dots are studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) methods with multicenter basis of displaced lowest Landau level wave functions. The broken symmetry states with semi-classical charge density constructed from superpositions of the ED solutions are compared to the UHF results. UHF overlooks the dependence of the few-electron wave functions on the actual relative positions of electrons localized in different charge puddles and partially compensates for this neglect by an exaggerated separation of charge islands which are more strongly localized than in the exact broken-symmetry states.   Abstract The temperature-dependent magnetoresistance effect is investigated in a magnetically modulated two-dimensional (21)) electron gas (2DEG) which can be realized by depositing two parallel ferromagnets on top of a 2DEG electron gas. In the resonant tunnelling regime the transmission for the parallel and antiparallel magnetization configurations shows a quite distinct dependence on the longitudinal wave vector of the incident electrons. This leads to a very large magneto resistance ratio with a strong temperature dependence. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract We study the ground and first excited states of the neutral and charged shallow donor system confined in a GaAs quantum well (QW) along one direction and by a parabolic potential in the plane perpendicular to the QW. The influence of an external perpendicular magnetic field and of the position of the donor on the energy of the states is studied. We investigate the dependence of the ground and excited states of the negatively charged donor on the confinement potential and external magnetic field. When the donor is displaced from the center of the QW the presence of the lateral confinement shifts the magnetic field induced angular momentum transitions and shifts the unbinding to higher magnetic field.   Abstract Transport properties of the 2DEG are studied in the presence of a normal magnetic field B and of a weak, two-dimensional periodic potential modulation. A tight-binding treatment has shown that each Landau level splits into several subbands with exponentially small gaps between them. Assuming the latter are closed due to disorder gives analytical wave functions and simplifies the evaluation of the magnetoresistance tensor p(muv) The relative phase of the oscillations in p(xx) and p(yy) depends on the modulation strengths and periods. For short periods less than or equal to 100 nm, in addition to the Weiss oscillations, the collisional contribution to the conductivity and the corresponding resistivity contribution show prominent peaks when one flux quantum h/e passes through an integral number of unit cells in good agreement with experiments. For periods 300-400 nm long used in early experiments, these peaks occur at fields 10-25 times smaller than those of the Weiss oscillations and are not resolved. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.   Abstract The influence of superficial defects on the vortex configurations of a thin superconducting disk is investigated within the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism. The free energy, magnetization, vorticity, and the Cooper pair density are calculated for both metastable and stable vortex configurations and different number of defects on its surface in the presence of an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the disk area. We show that the competition between the confinement geometry and the geometric position of the defects leads to non-conventional vortex configurations which are not compatible with the symmetry of the sample geometry.   Abstract We performed a molecular dynamics study of vortex-antivortex motion in a superconducting disk with a magnetic dot on top, in the Corbino disk geometry. In this system, vortices and antivortices are forced to move in opposite azimuthal directions by a radially applied current. The dot is magnetized out of plane in order to stabilize composite vortex-antivortex configurations, with vortices closer to the center of the disk and antivortices near to the disk edge. We observe that the interplay between the spatially inhomogeneous current distribution, the screening currents induced by the dipole, and the attractive vortex-antivortex (v-av) interaction result in different dynamical phases. At low current values, antivortices which are distributed at outer rings – remain bounded to vortices at inner rings and the whole configuration rotates rigidly. Above a threshold current, vortices and antivortices unbind and move at different angular velocities in a highly correlated way. Finally, at very strong drive, vortex-antivortex attraction is overhelmed by the external current Lorentz force, causing them to move in opposite directions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.   Abstract The pattern formation of the vortex states with non-monotonic inter-vortex interaction is investigated. Our applied model has a short-range repulsive (r < r(c)) and long-range attractive (r > r(c)) potential. We numerically calculate the stable states using molecular-dynamics simulations. The obtained vortex patterns are comparable with the vortices states in low kappa type-II superconductors and recently discovered "type-1.5'' superconductors. We also analyze the nearest neighbor distribution of the obtained patterns. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract We study the vortex profiles in two-gap superconductors using the extended Ginzburg-Landau theory. The results shed more light on the disparity between the effective length scales in two bands. We compare the behavior expected from the standard Ginzburg-Landau theory with this new approach, and find good qualitative agreement in the case of LiFeAs. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.   Abstract We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the dissipative state at high current densities of superconducting samples with a periodic array of holes consist of flux rivers resulting from a short range attractive interaction between vortices. This dynamically induced vortexvortex attraction results from the migration of quasiparticles out of the vortex core. We have directly visualized the formation of vortex chains by scanning Hall microscopy after freezing the dynamic state by a field cooling procedure at constant bias current. Similar experiments carried out in a sample without holes show no hint of flux river formation.

Abstract A superconducting rod with a magnetic moment on top develops vortices obtained here through 3D calculations of the GinzburgLandau theory. The inhomogeneity of the applied field brings new properties to the vortex patterns that vary according to the rod thickness. We find that for thin rods (disks) the vortex patterns are similar to those obtained in presence of a homogeneous magnetic field instead because they consist of giant vortex states. For thick rods novel patterns are obtained as vortices are curve lines in space that exit through the lateral surface.

Abstract The dynamics of vortex matter in mesoscopic superconducting Corbino disk is strongly influenced by the discrete vortex structure arranged in shells. While in previous works the vortex dynamics has been studied in large (macroscopic) and in very small mesoscopic disks (containing only few shells), in the intermediate-size regime it is much more complex and unusual, due to: (i) the competition between the vortexvortex interaction and confinement and (ii) (in)commensurability among the vortex shells. We found that the interplay between these effects can result in a very unusual vortex dynamical behavior: (i) unconventional angular melting (i.e., propagating from the boundary, where the shear stress is minimum, towards the center) and (ii) unconventional dynamics of shells (i.e., the inversion of shell velocities with respect to the gradient driving force). This unusual behavior is found for different number of shells.

Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Using the time-dependent GinzburgLandau formalism, we study the dynamic properties of a submicron superconducting loop in applied current and in presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The resistive state of the sample is caused by the motion of kinematic vortexantivortex pairs. Vortices and antivortices move in opposite directions to each other, perpendicularly to the applied drive, and the periodic creation and annihilation of such pairs results in periodic oscillations of the voltage across the sample. The dynamics of these kinematic pairs is strongly influenced by the applied magnetic field, which for high fields leads to the flow of just vortices. Kinematic vortices can be temporarily pinned inside the loop with observable trace in the voltage vs. time characteristics.
