Abstract: Temperature-programmed oxygen isotopic exchange study was performed on nanocrystalline tin dioxide-based materials synthesized via sol-gel route and modified by palladium. Such materials are widely used as resistive gas sensors. The experiments were carried out in a flow-reactor up to complete isotopic substitution of oxygen. Substantial rates of isotopic exchange for SnO2 were observed from about 700 K. The distribution of isotopic molecules O-16(2). (OO)-O-16-O-18 and O-18(2) corresponds to simple dioxygen heteroexchange mechanism with single lattice oxygen atom. The modification of SnO2 by Pd introduced multiple heteroexchange mechanism with preliminary O-2 dissociation on the clusters surface. Spill-over of atomic oxygen from Pd to the surface of SnO2 and fast exchange with lattice oxygen result in more than 100% increase of apparent heteroexchange rate. The exchange on SnO2/Pd was shown to be a complex process involving partial deactivation of the catalytic centers at temperature higher than 750 K. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

“Pb2.85Ba2.15Fe4SnO13 : a new member of the AnBnO3n-2 anion-deficient perovskite-based homologous series”. Korneychik OE, Batuk M, Abakumov AM, Hadermann J, Rozova MG, Sheptyakov DV, Pokholok KV, Filimonov DS, Antipov EV, Journal of solid state chemistry 184, 3150 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2011.09.029
Abstract: Pb2.85Ba2.15Fe4SnO13, a new n=5 member of the anion-deficient perovskite based AnBnO3n−2 (A=Pb, Ba, B=Fe, Sn) homologous series, was synthesized by the solid state method. The crystal structure of Pb2.85Ba2.15Fe4SnO13 was investigated using a combination of neutron powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It crystallizes in the Ammm space group with unit cell parameters a=5.7990(1) Å, b=4.04293(7) Å and c=26.9561(5) Å. The Pb2.85Ba2.15Fe4SnO13 structure consists of quasi two-dimensional perovskite blocks separated by 1/2[110](1̄01)p crystallographic shear (CS) planes. The corner-sharing FeO6 octahedra at the CS planes are transformed into edge-sharing FeO5 distorted tetragonal pyramids. The octahedral positions in the perovskite blocks between the CS planes are jointly taken up by Fe and Sn, with a preference of Sn towards the position at the center of the perovskite block. The chains of FeO5 pyramids and (Fe,Sn)O6 octahedra of the perovskite blocks delimit six-sided tunnels at the CS planes occupied by double chains of Pb atoms. The compound is antiferromagnetically ordered below TN=368±15 K.

“Coupled anion and cation ordering in Sr3RFe4O10.5 (R=Y, Ho, Dy) anion-deficientperovskites”. Abakumov AM, d' Hondt H, Rossell MD, Tsirlin AA, Gutnikova O, Filimonov DS, Schnelle W, Rosner H, Hadermann J, Van Tendeloo G, Antipov EV, Journal of solid state chemistry 183, 2845 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2010.09.039
Abstract: The Sr3RFe4O10.5 (R=Y, Ho, Dy) anion-deficient perovskites were prepared using a solid-state reaction in evacuated sealed silica tubes. Transmission electron microscopy and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy evidenced a complete A-cations and oxygen vacancies ordering. The structure model was further refined by ab initio structure relaxation, based on density functional theory calculations. The compounds crystallize in a tetragonal a≈2√2ap≈11.3 Å, с≈4сp≈16 Å unit cell (ap: parameter of the perovskite subcell) with the P42/mnm space group. Oxygen vacancies reside in the (FeO5/4□3/4) layers, comprising corner-sharing FeO4 tetrahedra and FeO5 tetragonal pyramids, which are sandwiched between the layers of the FeO6 octahedra. Smaller R atoms occupy the 9-fold coordinated position, whereas the 10-fold coordinated positions are occupied by larger Sr atoms. The Fe sublattice is ordered aniferromagnetically up to at least 500 K, while the rare-earth sublattice remains disordered down to 2 K.

“New perovskite-based manganite Pb2Mn2O5”. Hadermann J, Abakumov AM, Perkisas T, d' Hondt H, Tan H, Verbeeck J, Filonenko VP, Antipov EV, Van Tendeloo G, Journal of solid state chemistry 183, 2190 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2010.07.032
Abstract: A new perovskite based compound Pb2Mn2O5 has been synthesized using a high pressure high temperature technique. The structure model of Pb2Mn2O5 is proposed based on electron diffraction, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic unit cell with parameters a=5.736(1)Å≈√2a p p p (a p the parameter of the perovskite subcell) and space group Pnma. The Pb2Mn2O5 structure consists of quasi two-dimensional perovskite blocks separated by 1/2[110] p (1̄01) p crystallographic shear planes. The blocks are connected to each other by chains of edge-sharing MnO5 distorted tetragonal pyramids. The chains of MnO5 pyramids and the MnO6 octahedra of the perovskite blocks delimit six-sided tunnels accommodating double chains of Pb atoms. The tunnels and pyramidal chains adopt two mirror-related configurations (left L and right R) and layers consisting of chains and tunnels of the same configuration alternate in the structure according to an -LRLR-sequence. The sequence is sometimes locally violated by the appearance of -LL- or -RR-fragments. A scheme is proposed with a JahnTeller distortion of the MnO6 octahedra with two long and two short bonds lying in the ac plane, along two perpendicular orientations within this plane, forming a d-type pattern.

“Original close-packed structure and magnetic properties of the Pb4Mn9O20 manganite”. Abakumov AM, Hadermann J, Tsirlin AA, Tan H, Verbeeck J, Zhang H, Dikarev EV, Shpanchenko RV, Antipov EV, Journal of solid state chemistry 182, 2231 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2009.06.003
Abstract: The crystal structure of the Pb4Mn9O20 compound (previously known as Pb0.43MnO2.18) was solved from powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and high resolution electron microscopy data (S.G. Pnma, a=13.8888(2) Å, b=11.2665(2) Å, c=9.9867(1) Å, RI=0.016, RP=0.047). The structure is based on a 6H (cch)2 close packing of pure oxygen h-type (O16) layers alternating with mixed c-type (Pb4O12) layers. The Mn atoms occupy octahedral interstices formed by the oxygen atoms of the close-packed layers. The MnO6 octahedra share edges within the layers, whereas the octahedra in neighboring layers are linked through corner sharing. The relationship with the closely related Pb3Mn7O15 structure is discussed. Magnetization measurements reveal a peculiar magnetic behavior with a phase transition at 52 K, a small net magnetization below the transition temperature, and a tendency towards spin freezing.

“Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 anion-deficient layered perovskite”. d' Hondt H, Hadermann J, Abakumov AM, Kalyuzhnaya AS, Rozova MG, Tsirlin AA, Tan H, Verbeeck J, Antipov EV, Van Tendeloo G, Journal of solid state chemistry 182, 356 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2008.11.002
Abstract: A new layered perovskite Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 has been synthesized by solid state reaction in a sealed evacuated silica tube. The crystal structure has been determined using electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, and high-angle annular dark field imaging and refined from X-ray powder diffraction data (space group P4/mmm, a=3.89023(5) Å, c=7.8034(1) Å, RI=0.023, RP=0.015). The structure is characterized by an alternation of MnO2 and (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers. Oxygen atoms and vacancies, as well as the Al and Mn atoms in the (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers are disordered. The local atomic arrangement in these layers is suggested to consist of short fragments of brownmillerite-type tetrahedral chains of corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra interrupted by MnO6 octahedra, at which the chain fragments rotate over 90°. This results in an averaged tetragonal symmetry. This is confirmed by the valence state of Mn measured by EELS. The relationship between the Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 tetragonal perovskite and the parent Sr2Al1.07Mn0.93O5 brownmillerite is discussed. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate spin glass behavior of Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2. The lack of long-range magnetic ordering contrasts with Mn-containing brownmillerites and is likely caused by the frustration of interlayer interactions due to presence of the Mn atoms in the (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers.

“New anion-conducting solid solutions Bi1-xTex(O,F)2+\delta (x >, 0.5) and glassceramic material on their base”. Prituzhalov VA, Ardashnikova EI, Vinogradov AA, Dolgikh VA, Videau J-J, Fargin E, Abakumov AM, Tarakina NV, Van Tendeloo G, Journal of fluorine chemistry 132, 1110 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jfluchem.2011.06.042
Abstract: The anion-excess fluorite-like solid solutions with general composition Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ (x > 0.5) have been synthesized by a solid state reaction of TeO2, BiF3 and Bi2O3 at 873 K with following quenching. The homogeneity areas and polymorphism of the I ↔ IV Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phases were investigated. The crystal structure of the low temperature IV-Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase has been solved using electron diffraction and X-ray powder diffraction (a = 11.53051(9) Å, S.G. Ia-3, RI = 0.046, RP = 0.041). Glass formation area in the Bi2O3BiF3TeO2 (10% TiO2) system was investigated. IVBi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase starts to crystallize at short-time (0.53 h) annealing of oxyfluoride glasses at temperatures above Tg (600615 K). The ionic conductivity of the crystalline Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase and corresponding glass-ceramics was investigated. Activation energy of conductivity Ea = 0.41(2) eV for the IV-Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ crystalline samples and Ea = 0.73 eV for the glass-ceramic samples were obtained. Investigation of the oxyfluoride samples with a constant cation ratio demonstrates essential influence of excess fluorine anions on the ionic conductivity.

“Pd5InSe and Pd8In2Se : new metal-rich homological selenides with 2D palladium-indium fragments : synthesis, structure and bonding”. Zakharova EY, Kazakov SM, Isaeva AA, Abakumov AM, Van Tendeloo G, Kuznetsov AN, Journal of alloys and compounds 589, 48 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jallcom.2013.11.172
Abstract: Two new metal-rich palladium-indium selenides, Pd5InSe and Pd8In2Se, were synthesized using a high-temperature ampoule technique. Their crystal structures were determined from Rietveld analysis of powder diffraction data, supported by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction. Both compounds crystallize in tetragonal system with P4/mmm space group (Pd5InSe: a = 4.0290(3) angstrom, c = 6.9858(5) angstrom, Z = 1; Pd8In2Se: a = 4.0045(4) angstrom, c = 10.952(1) angstrom, Z = 1). The first compound belongs to the Pd5TlAs structure type, while the second one – to a new structure type. Main structural units in both selenides are indium-centered [Pd12In] cuboctahedra of the tetragonally distorted Cu3Au type, single-and double-stacked along the c axis in Pd5InSe and Pd8In2Se, respectively, alternating with [Pd8Se] rectangular prisms. DFT electronic structure calculations predict both compounds to be 3D metallic conductors and Pauli-like paramagnets. According to the bonding analysis based on the electron localization function topology, both compounds feature multi-centered palladium-indium interactions in their heterometallic fragments. “Oxidation potential in the Earth's lower mantle as recorded by ferropericlase inclusions in diamond”. Kaminsky FV, Ryabchikov ID, McCammon CA, Longo M, Abakumov AM, Turner S, Heidari H, Earth and planetary science letters 417, 49 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2015.02.029
Abstract: Ferropericlase (fPer) inclusions from kimberlitic lower-mantle diamonds recovered in the Juina area, Mato Grosso State, Brazil were analyzed with transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy and the flank method. The presence of exsolved non-stoichiometric Fe3+-enriched clusters, varying in size from 1-2 nm to 10-15 nm and comprising similar to 3.64 vol.% of fPer was established. The oxidation conditions necessary for fPer formation within the uppermost lower mantle (P = 25 GPa, T = 1960 K) vary over a wide range: Delta log f(o2) (IW) from 1.58 to 7.76 (Delta = 6.2), reaching the fayalite-magnetite-quartz (FMQ) oxygen buffer position. This agrees with the identification of carbonates and free silica among inclusions within lower-mantle Juina diamonds. On the other hand, at the base of the lower mantle Delta log f(o2) values may lie at and below the iron-wustite (IW) oxygen buffer. Hence, the variations of Delta log f(o2) values within the entire sequence of the lower mantle may reach ten logarithmic units, varying from the IW buffer to the FMQ buffer values. The similarity between lower- and upper-mantle redox conditions supports whole mantle convection, as already suggested on the basis of nitrogen and carbon isotopic compositions in lower- and upper-mantle diamonds. The mechanisms responsible for redox differentiation in the lower mantle may include subduction of oxidized crustal material, mechanical separation of metallic phase(s) and silicate-oxide mineral assemblages enriched in ferric iron, as well as transfer of fused silicate-oxide material presumably also enriched in ferric iron through the mantle. Abstract: Wadsley-Roth phase LixNb6PO25 has been studied as a potential candidate for anode material of Li-ion batteries. Its crystal structure, which consists of ReO3-type blocks of NbO6 octahedra connected with PO4 tetrahedra, provides a good stability and performance during Li+ insertion/removal. Li-ion chemical diffusion coefficient (D-chem) in LixNb6PO25 was determined by means of potentiostatic intermittent titration technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Different data treatments (classical Warburg equation or the model of an electrode system with ohmic potential drop and/or slow kinetics of the interfacial Li+ ion transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface) were used for calculation of D-chem of the Li ion inside this material; their applicability is discussed in the article. D-chem changes with the Li-ion doping degree, x, in LixNb3PO25 and has a sharp minimum near the two-phase region at appr. 1.7V vs. Li+/Li. These values of D-chem in LixNb9PO25 (similar to 10(-9)-10(-11) cm(2) s(-1)) were found to be in average noticeably higher than in the widely studied anode material, Li4Ti5O12. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: Superparamagnetic iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are successfully used as contrast agents in magnetic-resonance imaging. They can be easily functionalized for drug delivery functions, demonstrating great potential for both imaging and therapeutic applications. Here we developed new pH-responsive theranostic core-shell-corona nanoparticles consisting of superparamagentic Fe3O4 core that displays high T2 relaxivity, bovine serum albumin (BSA) shell that binds anticancer drug, doxorubicin (Dox) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) corona that increases stability and biocompatibility. The nanoparticles were produced by adsorption of the BSA shell onto the Fe3O4 core followed by crosslinking of the protein layer and subsequent grafting of the PEG corona using monoamino-terminated PEG via carbodiimide chemistry. The hydrodynamic diameter, zeta-potential, composition and T2 relaxivity of the resulting nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis and T2-relaxometry. Nanoparticles were shown to absorb Dox molecules, possibly through a combination of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. The loading capacity (LC) of the nanoparticles was 8 wt.%. The Dox loaded nanoparticles release the drug at a higher rate at pH 5.5 compared to pH 7.4 and display similar cytotoxicity against C6 and HEK293 cells as the free Dox. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: When studying photocatalysis it is important to consider, beside the chemical approach, the engineering part related to process optimisation. To achieve this a fixed bed photocatalytic set-up consisting of different catalyst placings, in order to vary catalyst distribution, is studied. The use of a fixed quantity of catalyst placed packed or randomly distributed in the reactor, results in an almost double degradation for the distributed catalyst. Applying this knowledge leads to an improved performance with limited use of catalyst. A reactor only half filled with catalyst leads to higher degradation performance compared to a completely filled reactor. Taking into account this simple process optimisation by better distributing the catalyst a more sustainable photocatalytic air purification process is achieved. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. “Synthesis and crystal structure of the new complex oxide Ca7Mn2.14Ga5.86O17.93”. Kalyuzhnaya AS, Abakumov AM, Rozova MG, d' Hondt H, Hadermann J, Antipov EV, Russian chemical bulletin 59, 706 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1007/s11172-010-0150-z
Abstract: The complex oxide Ca7Mn2.14Ga5.86O17.93 was synthesized by the solid-state reaction in a sealed evacuated quartz tube at 1000 °C. Its crystal structure was determined by electron diffraction and X-ray powder diffraction. The structure can be represented as a tetrahedral framework, viz., the polyanion [(Mn0.285Ga0.715)15O29.86]19- stabilized by the incorporated cation [Ca14GaO6]19+. The polycation consists of the GaO6 octahedra surrounded by the Ca atoms, which are arranged to form a cube capped at all places. The tetrahedral framework is partially disordered due to the presence of tetrahedra with two possible orientations in the positions (0, 0, 0) and (x, x, x) with x ≈ 0.15 and 0.17. The relationship between the Ca7Mn2.14Ga5.86O17.93 structures and related ordered phases with the symmetry F23, as well as the influence of the oxygen content on the ordering in the tetrahedral framework, are discussed.

Abstract: BSA-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles with different hydrodynamic diameters (36 +/- 4 and 85 +/- 10 nm) were synthesized, zeta potential and T2 relaxivity were determined, and their morphology was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Studies on rats with experimental glioma C6 showed that smaller nanoparticles more effectively accumulated in the tumor and circulated longer in brain vessels. Optimization of the hydrodynamic diameter improves the efficiency of MRT contrast agent.
