“Evidence for degradation of the chrome yellows in Van Gogh's sunflowers : a study using noninvasive in situ methods and synchrotron-radiation-based x-ray techniques”. Monico L, Janssens K, Hendriks E, Vanmeert F, van der Snickt G, Cotte M, Falkenberg G, Brunetti BG, Miliani C, Angewandte Chemie: international edition in English 54, 13923 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1002/ANIE.201505840
Abstract: This paper presents firm evidence for the chemical alteration of chrome yellow pigments in Van Gogh's Sunflowers (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam). Noninvasive in situ spectroscopic analysis at several spots on the painting, combined with synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray investigations of two microsamples, revealed the presence of different types of chrome yellow used by Van Gogh, including the lightfast PbCrO4 and the sulfur-rich PbCr1-xSxO4 (x approximate to 0.5) variety that is known for its high propensity to undergo photoinduced reduction. The products of this degradation process, i.e., Cr-III compounds, were found at the interface between the paint and the varnish. Selected locations of the painting with the highest risk of color modification by chemical deterioration of chrome yellow are identified, thus calling for careful monitoring in the future.

“Plumbonacrite identified by X-ray powder diffraction tomography as a missing link during degradation of red lead in a Van Gogh painting”. Vanmeert F, van der Snickt G, Janssens K, Angewandte Chemie: international edition in English 54, 3607 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1002/ANIE.201411691
Abstract: Red lead, a semiconductor pigment used by artists since antiquity, is known to undergo several discoloration phenomena. These transformations are either described as darkening of the pigment caused by the formation of either plattnerite (β-PbO2) or galena (PbS) or as whitening by which red lead is converted into anglesite (PbSO4) or (hydro)cerussite (2 PbCO3⋅Pb(OH)2; PbCO3). X-ray powder diffraction tomography, a powerful analytical method that allows visualization of the internal distribution of different crystalline compounds in complex samples, was used to investigate a microscopic paint sample from a Van Gogh painting. A very rare lead mineral, plumbonacrite (3 PbCO3⋅ Pb(OH)2⋅PbO), was revealed to be present. This is the first reported occurrence of this compound in a painting dating from before the mid 20th century. It constitutes the missing link between on the one hand the photoinduced reduction of red lead and on the other hand (hydro)cerussite, and thus sheds new light on the whitening of red lead.

“Formation of metallic mercury during photodegradation/photodarkening of \alpha-HgS : electrochemical evidence”. Anaf W, Janssens K, De Wael K, Angewandte Chemie: international edition in English 52, 12568 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1002/ANIE.201303977
Abstract: Das rote Pigment α-HgS neigt in Gegenwart von Licht und Chloridionen zur Schwärzung.

“Research frontiers in energy-related materials and applications for 2020-2030”. Blay V, Galian RE, Muresan LM, Pancratov D, Pinyou P, Zampardi G, Advanced sustainable systems 4, 1900145 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1002/ADSU.201900145
Abstract: This article delineates the state of the art for several materials used in the harvest, conversion, and storage of energy, and analyzes the challenges to be overcome in the decade ahead for them to reach the market and benefit society. The materials covered have had a special interest in recent years and include perovskites, materials for batteries and supercapacitors, graphene, and materials for hydrogen production and storage. Looking at the common challenges for these different systems, scientists in basic research should carefully consider commercial requirements when designing new materials. These include cost and ease of synthesis, abundance of precursors, recyclability of spent devices, toxicity, and stability. Improvements in these areas deserve more attention, as they can help bridge the gap for these technologies and facilitate the creation of partnerships between academia and industry. These improvements should be pursued in parallel with the design of novel compositions, nanostructures, and devices, which have led most interest during the past decade. Research groups are encouraged to adopt a cross-disciplinary mindset, which may allow more efficient use of existing knowledge and facilitate breakthrough innovation in both basic and applied research of energy-related materials.

“Combined use of synchrotron-radiation-based imaging techniques for the characterization of structured catalysts”. Basile F, Benito P, Bugani S, de Nolf W, Fornasari G, Janssens K, Morselli L, Scavetta E, Tonelli D, Vaccari A, Advanced functional materials 20, 4117 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1002/ADFM.201001004
Abstract: Active-phase-coated metallic supports as structured catalysts are gaining attention in endothermic and exothermic processes because they improve heat transfer. The deposition of a well-adhered and stable catalyst layer on the metallic support constitutes an important feature for the successful application of the final material. In this work, coating of FeCrAlY foams is performed by a one-step electrosynthesis-deposition of hydrotalcite-type compounds, precursors of catalysts active in endothermic steam methane reforming. The catalysts are studied at different length scales by using, for the first time, a combination of several techniques: SEM/EDS and X-ray fluorescence, X-ray powder diffraction and absorption-tomography experiments on the micro- and nanoscales at a synchrotron facility. The results show that the morphology of the coating depends on the synthesis conditions and that the catalyst may be described as Ni metal crystallites dispersed on γ-Al2O3, homogeneously coating the FeCrAlY foam.

Abstract: Laser microprobe mass spectrometry (LMMS) aims at the identification of local organic and inorganic constituents at the surface of solids, The low mass resolution capabilities of the initially used time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometers have often proved to be insufficient for identification, Therefore, high mass resolution Fourier transform (ET) LMMS was developed, Neo-ceramic powders with oxide or carbide coatings were analyzed by both FT LMMS and TOF LMMS, The data are useful to compare the analytical information gained from both methods, Analytical results of these samples by electron microprobe x-ray analysis (EPXMA) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) are discussed to assess the place of FT LMMS and TOF LMMS in the spectrum of microanalytical techniques.
