Abstract: Eosin is a synthetic organic colorant prone to fading under the influence of light. On the basis of the growing interest in the understanding of the discoloration mechanism of eosin-based lakes, this study compares the ability of two ultrafast and ultrasensitive mass spectrometry techniques to detect eosin derivatives in complex matrices, such as oil media without the use of conventional separation columns or additional sample preparation protocols. Direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) and direct infusion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DI-ESI-MS) were used to characterize the degradation pathway of eosin in oil media. The analysis protocols developed in this study are applied to discern the degradation mechanism of the lake pigment eosin (comprising the molecule per se complexed to an inorganic substrate) dispersed in linseed oil to create an oil paint. The analysis of oil paints by high resolution MS without an extraction methodology that modifies the system chemistry allowed us to identify the degradation forms without causing any additional fragmentation. Both techniques revealed the primary photodegradation pathway of eosin in linseed oil, and DI-ESI-MS provided additional information on the native conformation of the lake.

Abstract: This chapter lays out a conservation timeline, from past to future, for the Amsterdam version of Van Gogh's Sunflowers. It starts by considering the restoration history of the painting in order to assess its current physical state, and looks ahead to formulate an appropriate strategy for future conservation treatment and display. Due attention is paid to the two recorded episodes of restoration performed in 1927 and 1961 by the Dutch restorer, Jan Cornelis Traas. Based on physical and chemical investigation of Sunflowers we attempt to reconstruct what these former treatments (which are barely documented) entailed and consider the repercussions for the present condition of the painting. The former interventions by Traas also serve as a benchmark to reflect on current choices made, highlighting the extent to which ideas and methodologies have continued to evolve over the past century as conservation has moved further away from being a singularly craft-based activity to become an established historical and scientific discipline underpinned by ethical guidelines. Jan Cornelis Traas (1898–1984) As mentioned, the two main recorded interventions to the Amsterdam Sunflowers may be associated with the Dutch restorer, Jan Cornelis Traas, who treated the picture in 1927, close to the start of his career, and again in 1961, shortly before he retired. Traas was the first restorer to be appointed at the Mauritshuis in The Hague where he worked from 1931 to 1962 and treated hundreds of paintings, including iconic masterpieces such as Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. Yet despite the magnitude and importance of his restoration oeuvre, J.C. Traas (as he is usually referred to in surviving documents), has remained somewhat obscure. He is shown here in the only known surviving photograph of him at work, shortly before he retired (fig. 7.1). Unlike his illustrious contemporaries, A. Martin de Wild (1899–1969) and Helmut Ruhemann (1891–1973), for example, Traas did not publish anything, he appears to have kept no records of his work and no personal archive is known. However, the study of some newly discovered historical documents, combined with physical examination of Sunflowers and a large number of other works he treated, allows us to recover an idea of his working practices and approaches viewed within the context of his day.

Abstract: This chapter explains the materials and techniques employed in the Amsterdam Sunflowers, enabling a comparison with the London version described in chapter 3. Building upon the 2016 article published in the National Gallery Technical Bulletin, it incorporates the latest findings gained by computer-assisted methods used to characterize the canvas support, as well as in-situ campaigns of non-invasive investigation together with further analysis of microscopic paint samples. The chapter sequence follows the steps in Van Gogh's working practice. Starting with the canvas, automated analysis of the weave enables the provenance of the canvas to be traced back to a particular roll of linen ordered by Van Gogh. Combining technical evidence with knowledge of historical manufacturing techniques further allows us to reconstruct the way in which Van Gogh divided his canvas roll into pieces used for Sunflowers and other paintings. We go on to consider how, with the original painting at hand, he used charcoal to transfer the motif of the London Sunflowers onto his blank canvas. Despite careful planning of the composition, an adjustment was required late in the working process, when Van Gogh added a painted wooden strip to extend the background above the flower at the top edge of the canvas. The artist's process of working up the composition in paint is described, paying special attention to his use of colour. The pigments and pigment mixtures used in the Amsterdam Sunflowers have been comprehensively mapped and are compared with the London picture, with discussion of some similarities and differences that account for the distinctive colour scheme of each painting. This understanding of colour application in the Amsterdam Sunflowers lays the foundation for subsequent chapters that will go on to consider the impact of light-induced colour changes that have taken place over time, and the related need to define appropriate lighting guidelines for the future safe preservation of this painting and others made with similar materials (chapters 5 and 7).

Abstract: Electron microscopy is a powerful tool for studying the properties of materials down to their atomic structure. In many cases, the quantitative interpretation of images requires simulations based on atomistic structure models. These typically use the independent atom approximation that neglects bonding effects, which may, however, be measurable and of physical interest. Since all electrons and the nuclear cores contribute to the scattering potential, simulations that go beyond this approximation have relied on computationally highly demanding all-electron calculations. Here, we describe a new method to generate ab initio electrostatic potentials when describing the core electrons by projector functions. Combined with an interface to quantitative image simulations, this implementation enables an easy and fast means to model electron scattering. We compare simulated transmission electron microscopy images and diffraction patterns to experimental data, showing an accuracy equivalent to earlier all-electron calculations at a much lower computational cost.

Abstract: A biomimetic sensor for cefquinome (CFQ) was designed at multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified graphite screen-printed electrodes (MWCNTs-G-SPEs) as a proof-of-concept for the creation of a sensors array for beta-lactam antibiotics detection in milk. The sensitive and selective detection of antibiotic residues in food and environment is a fundamental step in the elaboration of prevention strategies to fight the insurgence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as recommended by authorities around the world (EU, WHO, FDA). The detection strategy is based on the characteristic electrochemical fingerprint of the target antibiotic cefquinome. A conducive electropolymerized molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) coupled with MWCNTs was found to be the optimal electrode modifier, able to provide an increased selectivity and sensitivity for CFQ detection. The design of CFQ-MIP was facilitated by the rational selection of the monomer, 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA). The electropolymerization process of 4-ABA have not been fully elucidated yet; for this reason a thorough study and optimization of electropolymerization conditions was performed to obtain a conducive and stable poly(4-ABA) film. The modified electrodes were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). CFQ-MIP were synthesized at MWCNT-G-SPEs by electropolyrnerization in pH approximate to 1 (0.1 M sulphuric acid) with a monomer:template ratio of 5:1. Two different analytical protocols were tested (single and double step detection) to minimize unspecific adsorptions and improve the sensitivity. Under optimal conditions, the lowest CFQ concentration detectable by square wave voltammetry (SWV) at the modified sensor was 50 nM in 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 2.

Abstract: Wastewater reuse provides valuable solutions to solve the societal challenges of decreasing availability and limiting access to secure water resources. The present study quantifies the environmental performance of nectarine orchards irrigation using treated municipal wastewater (TMW) and surface water using a unique dataset based on field experimental data. Climate change, toxicity (for human and freshwater), eutrophication (marine and freshwater) and acidification impacts were analysed using the impact assessment method suggested by the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD). The water footprint associated to the life cycles of each system has been estimated using the Available WAter REmaining (AWARE) method. Monte Carlo simulation was used to assess data uncertainty. The irrigation of nectarine orchards using TMW performs better than the irrigation using surface water for eutrophication impact categories. Compared with surface water resources, the potential impacts of TMW reuse in agriculture on climate change and toxicity are affected by the wastewater treatment phase (WWT). Only eutrophication and acidification burdens are generated by in-field substitution of surface water with TMW. Considering human and ecosystem water demand, the irrigation with TMW increases water consumption of 19.12 m3 per kg of nectarine produced. Whereas, it shows a positive contribution to water stress (−0.19 m3) if only human water demand is considered. This study provides important results that allow for a better understanding of the potential environmental consequences of TMW reuse in agriculture. It suggests that embracing the type of WWTs, the replacement of fertilizers, the effects on water scarcity and ecosystem quality might be useful to redefine water reuse regulations and increase public acceptance for the reuse of TMW in agriculture. Moreover, this study reveals the need for developing consensus and standardized guidance for life cycle analysis of water reuse applications.

Abstract: Biobased chemistry has gained interest and has the potential to tackle some of the sustainability challenges the chemical industry must endure. Sustainability impacts need to be evaluated and monitored to highlight the advantages and pitfalls of different biobased routes over the entire product life cycle. This study aims for expert consensus concerning indicators needed and preferred for sustainability analysis of biobased chemicals in Europe. Experts are consulted by means of a Delphi method with stakeholders selected from three core groups: the private, public and academic sector. Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) is performed to gather data on the prioritization of the sustainability indicators per respondent. Afterwards, Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) is used to develop a consensus ranking among the experts. The results show that GHG emissions, market potential and acceptance of biobased materials are deemed the most crucial indicators for respectively environmental, economic and social sustainability. Expert consensus is positive in all three sustainability domains, with the strongest consensus measured for environmental sustainability showing a median Kendalls τ of 0.63 (τ ranging from -1 to 1) and the weakest consensus found within social sustainability showing a median Kendalls τ of 0.50. Further research can apply the ranked indicators on specific case studies to evaluate the practicability of the defined indicator set.

Abstract: Processes requiring intensive interfacial momentum, mass and heat exchange between gases and particulate solids can be greatly enhanced by operating in a centrifugal field. This is realized in the Gas-Solid Vortex Reactor (GSVR) with centrifugal accelerations up to two orders of magnitude higher than the Earth's gravitational acceleration. Here, the flow patterns of two 1g-Geldart B-type particles are experimentally assessed, over the gas inlet velocity range 82–126 m s−1, in an 80 mm diameter and 15 mm height GSVR. The particles are monosized aluminum spheres of 0.5 mm diameter, and walnut shell in the sieve fraction 0.50–0.56 mm and aspect ratio 1.3 ± 0.2. Two dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry combined with Digital Image Analysis and pressure measurements revealed that periodic fluctuations in solids azimuthal and radial velocity between gas inlet slots are strongly related to the average solids azimuthal velocity and bed uniformity. Aluminum particles feature steeper changes in azimuthal velocity and more attenuated changes in radial velocity than walnut shell particles. Within the assessed gas inlet velocity range the solids bed of aluminum exhibits average azimuthal velocities and bed voidages 40–50% and ≈10% lower than those of walnut shell. The aerodynamic response time of the particles, i.e. ρsdp2/18μg, emerged as an important parameter to assess the influence of the carrier gas jet on the radial deflection of the particles and the interaction solids bed-outer wall. Too low aerodynamic response time relates to nonuniformity in bed voidage due to solids radial velocity fluctuations. Excessive aerodynamic response time indicates low solids azimuthal velocities due to solids bed-outer wall friction.

Abstract: Recently developed beta-metastable Ti grades take advantage of the simultaneous activation of TRIP and TWIP effects for enhancing their work hardening rate. However, the role of each plasticity mechanism on the macroscopic mechanical response is still unclear. In this work, the nucleation mechanism of the first activated plasticity mechanism, namely {112} < 111 > twinning, was investigated. Firstly, post-mortem TEM analysis showed that twins nucleate on pre-existing microstructural defects such as thermal jogs with the zonal dislocation mechanism. The precipitation of the omega phase on twin boundaries has been observed, as well as the emission of numerous dislocations from super-jogs present in these twin boundaries. It is also shown that {112} < 111 > twins act as effective dislocation sources for the subsequent plasticity mechanisms such as beta -> alpha '' martensitic transformation and {332} < 111 > twinning. Secondly, in situ TEM tensile testing of the investigated Ti grade highlighted the primary role of the initial defect configuration present in the microstructure. It is shown that twins cannot nucleate without the presence of specific defects allowing the triggering of the dislocation decomposition needed for the twinning mechanism highlighted in investigated bulk samples.

Abstract: Selective laser melting (SLM) manufactured AlSi10Mg alloys present a fine silicon-rich network and precipitates which grant high mechanical strength but low ductility. Post-treatments, aiming at eliminating inherent defects related to SLM such as residual stresses, porosity or inhomogeneity, result in significant changes in the microstructure and impact both the hardening and the damage mechanisms of the post-treated material. The present work is dedicated to the investigation of the fracture of SLM AlSi10Mg under as built and three post-treatment conditions, namely two stress relieve heat treatments and friction stir processing (FSP). It is found that the interconnected Si network fosters damage at low strain due to the brittleness of the Si phase. The onset of damage transfers load to the enclosed Al phase which then fractures quickly under high stress, thus leading to low material ductility. In contrast, when the Si network is globularized into Si particles, the ductility is highly increased even in the case where the porosity and inhomogeneity of the microstructure remain after the post-treatment. The ductility enhancement results from the delay in void nucleation on the Si particles as well as from the tolerance for void growth in the Al matrix.

Abstract: The aged Ni-rich NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit the multi-stage martensitic transformation (MMT), which has important influences on functional properties and practical applications of the NiTi SMAs. A hidden single-stage martensitic transformation from B2 parent phase to B19' martensite phase is found in an aged Ni51Ti49 alloy, which happens concurrently with a commonly observed two-stage martensitic transformation B2-R-B19' (R: martensite phase) and actually composes one stage of a multi-stage martensitic transformation (MMT) together with the two-stage one. B2-B19' martensitic transformation occurs in the NiTi matrix containing Ni4Ti3 precipitates with relatively large inter-particle space, while B2-R-B19' transformation takes place in the NiTi matrix with Ni4Ti3 precipitates having relatively small inter-particle space. Abstract: We consider an interface between two strong time-reversal invariant topological insulators having surface states with opposite spin chirality, or equivalently, opposite mirror Chern number. We show that such an interface supports gapless modes that are protected by mirror symmetry. The interface states are investigated with a continuum model for the Bi2Se3 class of topological insulators that takes into account terms up to third order in the crystal momentum, which ensures that the model has the correct symmetry. The model parameters are obtained from ab initio calculations. Finally, we consider the effect of rotational mismatch at the interface, which breaks the mirror symmetry and opens a gap in the interface spectrum.

Abstract: Despite public awareness of unintended impacts (1980s) and well-developed international standards (2000s), downstream impacts of large hydropower projects still very often are not properly assessed. Impacts of (hydropower-regulated) interbasin water transfers (IBWTs) are considered self-evidently positive, although they can have far-reaching consequences for hydrogeomorphological systems and consequently river-dependent communities. In this study, the downstream direct and indirect impacts of the Ethiopian hydropower-regulated Tana-Beles IBWT are evaluated in an interdisciplinary way. The components of the framework of rural livelihoods are considered and changing contexts, resources availabilities and livelihood strategies are analysed. Mixed methods are applied, combining hydrogeomorphological field observations, GIS analyses, scientific literature, policy documents, and semi-structured interviews with local people and local to federal authorities. Results show that the IBWT drastically increased the Beles rivers discharge (with an average release of +92 m3 s−1 at the outlet; *2 in rainy season and *12 in dry season 100 km downstream of the water release) and introduced dangerous situations for local communities (over 250 people drowned in the river). River bank erosion resulted in the uncompensated loss of farmland (163 ha) and the establishment of large-scale commercial farms increased the pressure on land and led to the impoverishment of displaced communities (4310 households). The project was implemented top-down, without any transparency, benefit sharing or compensation for external costs. This stresses the importance of downstream interdisciplinary impact assessments and highlights the need for decent in-depth ex post-analyses of hydropower projects. Environmental impact assessments should be taken seriously and cannot be considered a formality. In Ethiopia and in many developing countries, the hydropower industry is booming. Although dams and IBWTs can be the best solution for water-related problems in specific contexts, national development goals (such as the expansion of the electricity network) should not be at the expense of rural livelihoods.

Abstract: Because of high electrocatalytic activity, Pt based metal nanospheres (NSs) have attracted a lot of attention. Hence, multi-particle nano-single crystal coalesced PtCu NSs are designed and successfully synthesized by a cost-effective aqueous solution method. The formed PtCu NS catalyst exhibits a superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalytic activity with an ultralow onset potential of 18 mV at the current density of 2 mA/cm(2) and high mass activity of 1.08 A/mg(pt) (7.2 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalysts). Also, it shows an enhancement of 3.2 and 2.7 times in the mass and specific activities toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared to that of Pt/C. Moreover, it possesses an excellent catalytic durability for both ORR and HER. Even after 10,000 cycles, its ORR mass activity retains 87% of its initial value. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that by introducing Cu atoms into the Pt lattice, a downshift of the D-band center and favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy of approaching to zero (Delta G) occur, indicating the increased electrocatalytic activity of Pt electrocatalysts. Abstract: Binary metal oxides with superior charge capacity and electrochemical activity have gained great interests. In this work, monodispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters on the ordered mesoporous carbons were fabricated by a facile self-developed impregnation method. The synthesized hybrids possess improved wettability, high specific surface area (> 700m(2)/g) and regular mesoporous channels (similar to 4 nm), resulting in improved electrochemical performance for supercapacitors. These well-dispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters exhibit a significant specific capacitance up to 367 F/g in the aqueous KNO3 electrolyte and good reversibility with a cycling efficiency of 99.8%. It is proposed that the mesoporous structure can facilitate the diffusion of electrolyte ions and then accelerate the electrochemical utilization of CoMoO4 nanoclusters. The results demonstrate that the produced binary metal oxide nanoclusters with excellent capacitance and good retention can be used as promising electrodes for the environment-friendly supercapacitors.
