Abstract: We discuss the selection criteria for alternative metals in order to fulfill the requirements necessary for interconnects at half pitch values below 10 nm. The performance of scaled interconnects using transition metal germanides and CoAl alloys as metallization are studied and compared to conventional Cu and W interconnects.

Abstract: We characterize and model the single-particle energy level position and resonant current strength at a three-level crossing in a coherent mixer composed of two weakly coupled vertical quantum dots. In addition to clear anticrossing behavior, an otherwise strong resonance is completely extinguished at the center of the crossing. Despite the strong variation in energy level position and resonant current strength throughout the crossing region, the resonance widths and the sum of the branch currents are found to be approximately constant.

Abstract: Within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory, we calculated the full phase diagram for a superconducting disk with radius R = 4 (T = 0) and we studied the behavior of the penetration and expulsion fields as a function of temperature for multivortex and giant vortex states.

Abstract: The alloy Ti6Al4V is known to be prone to the formation of adiabatic shear bands when dynamically loaded in shear. This causes a catastrophic decrease of the load carrying capacity and is usually followed by fracture. Although, the main mechanism is recognized to be the competition between strain hardening and thermal softening, a detailed understanding of the role of microstructural plasticity mechanisms and macroscopic loading conditions does not exist yet. To study strain localization and shear fracture, different high strain rate shear tests have been carried out: compression of hat-shaped specimens, torsion of thin walled tubular specimens and in-plane shear tests. The value of the three techniques in studying shear localization is evaluated. Post-mortem analysis of the fracture surface and the materials' microstructure is performed with optical and electron microscopy. In all cases a ductile fracture is observed. SEM and TEM techniques are used to study the local microstructure and composition in the shear band and as such the driving mechanism for the ASB formation. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: The atomic structure of single-wall carbon nanotube bundles produced by three different techniques has been characterized by electron diffraction and microscopy. Small bundles produced by Catalytical Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD) exhibit only one or two tube chiralities within a single bundle while bundles produced by arc-discharge or laser-ablation exhibit more chiralities. A detailed analysis of the central line of diffraction is also presented. The CCVD nanotubes present more intense spots around 1.7 Angstrom(-1) < k < 2Angstrom(-1) (k is the momentum transfer) compared to what is observed for nanotubes produced by other methods. Amongst the possible explanation for such an anomaly, we put forward that in this range of momentum transfer, the relative tube orientations and translations are important for what concerns the interpretation of the diffraction peaks intensities.

Abstract: Nb-rich precipitates in the matrix of as-cast and annealed Ni45.5Ti45.5Nb9 alloys are investigated by scanning and scanning transmission electron microscopy, including slice-and-view and geometric phase analysis (GPA). The Nb-rich bcc nano-precipitates in the as-cast alloy have a 10% lattice parameter difference with the B2 matrix and reveal compensating interface dislocations. The 3D reconstruction of the configuration of small Nb-rich precipitates in the annealed alloy reveals a wall-like distribution of precipitates, which may increase the thermal hysteresis of the material.

Abstract: We describe an experimental distinction between giant vortex and multivortex states in mesoscopic superconducting disks by using two methods: the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method and the temperature dependence of vortex expulsion fields. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical simulations based on the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Abstract: The properties of alternative metals to Cu and W for interconnect applications are reviewed based on first-principles simulations and benchmarked in terms of intrinsic bulk resistivity and electromigration.

Abstract: Not much about the effect of thiocyanate addition on the sulphur ripening is known, although it is used for many applications in photographic practice. Via a combination of tracer analysis and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy the effect of thiocyanate addition on the sulphur and sulphur-plus-gold ripening could be unveiled. When thiocyanate is added prior to the sulphur addition, it appears to rearrange the silver halide surface in such way that the sulphur deposition rate is enhanced, but the supply of interstitials is limited. Addition of thiocyanate after the sulphur reaction results in the formation of thiocyanate complexes with silver, from which a silver ion is more easily deposited in a surface cell of the silver sulphide clusters thus enhancing the sensitization rate. For sulphur-plus-gold sensitized emulsions it was observed that part of the gold ions could be removed out of the Ag2-xAuxS clusters by addition of thiocyanate ions and subsequent washing. Hence, it was concluded that two different types of gold ions are present in the silver sulphide clusters; 1. gold ions which are substitutional for silver (bound between sulphur and bromide ions) 2. gold ions which bridge two or three sulphur atoms. Incorporation of gold ions into silver sulphide clusters suppresses their optical absorption in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Since the optical absorption at 505 nm can completely be restored by addition of thiocyanate, it is assumed that the entity absorbing at this wavelength is a monomer of silver sulphide.

Abstract: We investigate the properties of carriers in graphene-based quantum wires created by potential barriers, by means of analytical and numerical calculations. We obtain expressions for the energy spectrum as a function of barrier height, well width and linear momentum along the wire. The results demonstrate a direction-dependent resonant transmission across the potential well.
