“Plasmon holographic experiments: theoretical framework”. Verbeeck J, van Dyck D, Lichte H, Potapov P, Schattschneider P, Ultramicroscopy 102, 239 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.ultramic.2004.10.005
Abstract: A theoretical framework is described to understand the results of plasmon holography experiments leading to insight in the meaning of the experimental results and pointing out directions for future experiments. The framework is based on the formalism of mutual intensity to describe how coherence is transferred through an optical system. For the inelastic interaction with the object, an expression for the volume. plasmon excitations in a free electron gas is used as a model for the behaviour of aluminium. The formalism leads to a clear graphical intuitive tool for under-standing the experiments. It becomes evident that the measured coherence is solely related to the angular distribution of the plasmon scattering in the case of bulk plasmons. After describing the framework, the special case of coherence outside a spherical particle is treated and the seemingly controversial idea of a plasmon with a limited coherence length obtained front experiments is clarified. Abstract: A semiconductor quantum dot model accounting for single exciton as well as biexciton states coupled to phonons and laser light is investigated in the limit of strong electronic confinement. For an arbitrary sequence of excitations with ultrafast pulses analytical solutions are obtained for all density-matrix elements. The results are nonperturbative with respect to both the carrier-phonon and the carrier-light coupling. Numerical results for a single pulse excitation are presented illustrating spectral features of our solution as well as pulse area and temperature dependences.

“Phase assembly and microstructure of CeO2-doped ZrO2 ceramics prepared by spark plasma sintering”. Xu T, Wang P, Fang P, Kan Y, Chen L, Vleugels J, Van der Biest O, van Landuyt J, Journal of the European Ceramic Society 25, 3437 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jeurceramsoc.2004.09.004
Abstract: CeO2-doped ZrO2, (8 mol%) starting powder was sintered by means of spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1300 degrees C without holding time. The stability of the tetragonal ZrO2 phase in the Ce-ZrO2 ceramic sintered under strongly reducing conditions was investigated. The SPS sample consisted of monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2 phase, with a volume ratio of two to one, as well as a trace amount of a Zr-Ce-O cubic solid solution phase. In contrast, the same powder sintered by hot-pressing in nitrogen at 1300 and 1500 degrees C for 1h showed no tetragonal ZrO2. Microstructural observation of the SPS ceramic by SEM and TEM revealed grains with and without twins. The reason for the appearance of the tetragonal phase in the SPS sample sintered under strongly reducing conditions is discussed. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

“Overcoming pulse mixing and signal tailing in laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry depth profiling”. Bleiner D, Belloni F, Doria D, Lorusso A, Nassisi V, Journal of analytical atomic spectrometry (2005). http://doi.org/10.1039/B509379C
Abstract: The laser ablation-induced plasma was used as a composition-con trolled source for ion implantation in Si crystals. Then, laser ablation in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used for the elemental depth profiling of the implanted samples. Monte Carlo simulations permitted us to conclude that a depth resolution of tens of nm would be necessary to define the shape of the implantation profiles, as is obtained using XPS and RBS, whereas a hundred nm depth resolution is sufficient to determine the total implanted dose. The detection power of LA-ICP-MS would routinely allow rapid analytical control on the trace level implanted dose. Nevertheless, this technique is limited in terms of depth profiling resolution due to pulse mixing and signal tailing induced during the aerosol transport. Raw signal processing procedures were developed for the minimization of shapeline dispersion, deconvolution of pulse mixing and more appropriate assessment of the implanted profiles. Shapeline dispersion could be corrected for by determining the signal waning constant and implementing this information for a non-affine alibi transformation of the LA-ICP-MS signal traces. Pulse mixing deconvolution was attained with an algorithm that considered accumulated signal intensity due to pulse-on-pulse stacking, i.e., the latest pulse on top of all antecedent individual pulses' exponential tails proportionally.

“Orientational charge density waves and the metal-insulator transition in polymerized KC60”. Verberck B, Nikolaev AV, Michel KH, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 71, 165117 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.71.165117
Abstract: A theoretical model is presented for the description of the metal-insulator transition which accompanies the structural phase transition at T approximate to 50 K in polymerized KC60. The model involves orientational charge density waves (along the C-60 polymer chains) which were introduced previously for a description of the structural phase transition. A satisfactory qualitative and quantitative understanding is obtained when the three-dimensionality of the crystal and the presence of the K+ counterions is properly taken into account.

“Observation of paramagnetic supercurrent in mesoscopic superconducting rings and disks using multiple-small-tunnel-junction method”. Kanda A, Baelus BJ, Peeters FM, Kadowaki K, Ootuka Y, , 204 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1142/9789812701619_0032
Abstract: Responses of mesoscopic superconducting rings and disks to perpendicular magnetic fields are studied by using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method, in which transport properties of several small tunnel junctions attached to the sample are measured simultaneously. This allows us for a direct experimental observation of the paramagnetic supercurrent, which is closely related to the paramagnetic Meissner effect. The results are compared with numerical results based on the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

“Numerical modelling for a dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure in nitrogen”. Madani M, Bogaerts A, Vangeneugden D, , 53 (2005)
Abstract: In this paper we used a one dimensional fluid model, for the simulations of a Dielectric Barrier Discharge at atmospheric pressure. From the current and voltage profiles and the density profiles, we notice that two different regimes can be obtained in a uniform DBD. Furthermore a two dimensional flud model was developed and we describe how the gasflow can be included in such a model.

Abstract: Annular dark field TEM images exhibit a dominant mass-thickness contrast that can be quantified to extract single atom scattering cross sections. On top of this incoherent background, additional lattice fringes appear with a nonlinear information limit of 1.2 angstrom at 150 kV. The formation of these fringes is described by coherent nonlinear imaging theory and good agreement is found between experimental and simulated images. Calculations furthermore predict that the use of aberration corrected microscopes will improve the image quality dramatically. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“Ni4Ti3 precipitates and their influence on the surrounding NiTi matrix”. Schryvers D, Tirry W, Yang Z, , 205 (2005)
Abstract: The properties of the shape memory behaviour of Ni-rich binary NiTi are strongly dependant on the thermal history of the material. In this respect the changing of transformation temperatures of the underlying martensitic transformation and the occurrence of multiple step transformations are the most important phenomena. Part of the explanation is found in the presence of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in the B2 matrix after particular heat treatments. The formation of these precipitates changes the Ni concentration of the matrix and induces a strain field, with both of these aspects expected to be of importance. In this work atomic resolution and analytical TEM (transmission electron microscopy) techniques are used to obtain quantitative information concerning these two main features. Furthermore, the known structure of Ni4Ti3 is refined by a least squares optimization of quantitative electron diffraction data. The high-resolution TEM results show that there are strains up to 2% in the matrix surrounding the precipitates and they gradually increase until a maximum is reached when moving away from the interface. Analytical results reveal a global decrease of Ni content in the matrix when sufficient precipitates are present and a gradient in their close vicinity. The refinement of the structure shows atomic displacements, thereby increasing our understanding of the shrinking of the precipitate lattice with respect to the matrix.
