Abstract: The nonuniform superconducting state in a ring in which the order parameter vanishing at one point is studied. This state is characterized by a jump of the phase by pi at the point where the order parameter becomes zero. In uniform rings such a state is a saddle-point state and consequently unstable. However, for nonuniform rings with, e.g., variations of geometrical or physical parameters or with attached wires this state can be stabilized and may be realized experimentally.

Abstract: Epitaxially grown heterostructures consisting of alternating layers of LaMnO(3) (LMO, 9 or 15 unit cells) and SrMnO(3) (SMO, 4 or 6 unit cells) on a SrTiO(3)(100) (STO(100)) substrate have been studied by a combination of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron diffraction, quantitative electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) with model fitting, energy filtered TEM (EFTEM) and imaging spectroscopy on an atomic scale. The combination of these techniques is necessary for the structural, chemical, and electronic characterization of these heterostructures. A model is proposed containing chemically and structurally sharp interfaces. The SrMnO(3) layers are stabilized in a Pm3m structure between two LMO layers. Tensile stress causes oxygen deficiency in the SMO layers increasing the number of 3d electrons on the Mn sites to resemble the Mn(3+) sites in LMO. The energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) of O and Mn is compared for both LMO and SMO layers and shows that the Mn-O bonds have a partially covalent character. The absence of a strong valency effect in the Mn ELNES is due to the oxygen vacancies in SMO.

Abstract: Spatially nonhomogeneously spin polarized nuclei are proposed as a new mechanism to monitor electron states in a nanostructure, or as a means to create and, if necessary, reshape such nanostructures in the course of the experiment. We found that a polarization of nuclear spins may lift the spin polarization of the electron states in a nanostructure and, if sufficiently strong, leads to a polarization of the electron spins. Polarized nuclear spins may form an energy landscape capable of binding electrons with energy up to several meV and the localization radius > 100 Angstrom. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: Single-chain elasticity of polyethylene at theta point up to 90% of stretching with respect to its contour length is computed by Monte Carlo simulation of an atomistic model in continuous space. The elasticity law together with the free-energy and the internal energy variations with stretching are found to be very well represented by the wormlike chain model up to 65% of the chain elongation, provided the persistence length is treated as a temperature-dependent parameter. Beyond this value of elongation simple ideal chain models are not able to describe the Monte Carlo data in a thermodynamic consistent way. This study reinforces the use of the wormlike chain model to interpret experimental data on the elasticity of synthetic polymers in the finite extensibility regime, provided the chain is not yet in its fully stretched regime. Specific solvent effects on the elasticity law and the partition between energetic and entropic contributions to single chain elasticity are investigated. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: We report quenching of the Hall effect with increasing magnetic field confined in a micron-sized spot. Such fields were created by placing tall ferromagnetic pillars on top of a two-dimensional electron gas, which allowed us to achieve the field strength up to 0.4 T under the pillars in the absence of external field. The quenching is accompanied by an anomalous increase in resistance and occurs when the cyclotron diameter matches the size of the magnetic spot. The results are explained by a rapid increase in the number of electrons that are scattered or quasilocalized by the magnetic region.

Abstract: Thin films of the superconducting Nd1+xBa2−xCu3O7−δ (NBCO) and Y1(NdxBa2−x)Cu3O7−δ (YNBCO) compounds have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering and diode high pressure oxygen sputtering. Different techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to study the film microstructures and the surface morphology. It is shown that the Nd/Ba exchange promotes a 2D heteroepitaxial growth in the case of the NBCO films deposited on (1 0 0) SrTiO3 substrates, with a suppression of the characteristic 3D spirals structures. On the contrary in YNBCO the Nd/Ba exchange does not provide a driving force for the suppression of screw-dislocations, since spirals or towers originated by screw and half loop dislocations are observed on the surface. TEM reveals that anti-phase boundaries are eliminated during the growth of NBCO films thanks to the Nd/Ba exchange while this mechanism is not operating in the case of YNBCO films.

Abstract: We report the suppression of the Hall effect in a mesoscopic Hall cross with a strong magnetic field only in the centre and vanishingly small outside, The local magnetic field is produced by placing Dy pillar on top of a structure with a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas. The effect is found to be due to a sharp increase of the number of back-scattered and quasi-localised electron orbits. Abstract: The magnetic proper-ties and their correlation with the microstructure and electrical transport are investigated in La0.88Sr0.1MnO3 films grown on (100)SrTiO3 Single crystal substrates with thickness ranging from 100 to 2500 Angstrom. The ultrathin film (t = 100 Angstrom) has a single ferromagnetic transition (FMT) at T-c of 250 K, whereas the thicker films exhibit two FMTs, with the main one at a lowered T-c of 200 K while the minor one around 300 K. Furthermore, a thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy has been found, strongly indicating the existence of strain effect, which is also revealed by the transmission electron microscopy study. The suppressed Jahn-Teller distortion (JTD) by the epitaxial strain, and the recovered JTD due to the strain relexation are suggested to explain the metallic behavior in thin films and the insulating behavior in the thick film (t = 2500 Angstrom), repectively.
