Abstract: Charge carriers in single and multilayered graphene systems behave as chiral particles due to the particular lattice symmetry of the crystal. We show that the interplay between the meta-material properties of graphene multilayers and the pseudospinorial properties of the charge carriers result in the occurrence of Klein and anti-Klein tunneling for rhombohedral stacked multilayers. We derive an algebraic formula predicting the angles at which these phenomena occur and support this with numerical calculations for systems up to four layers. We present a decomposition of an arbitrarily stacked multilayer into pseudospin doublets that have the same properties as rhombohedral systems with a lower number of layers. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2013

“Holstein polaron: The effect of coupling to multiple-phonon modes”. Covaci L, Berciu M, Epl 80, 67001 (2007). http://doi.org/10.1209/0295-5075/80/67001
Abstract: We investigate the effects of coupling to multiple-phonon modes on the properties of a Holstein polaron. To this end, we generalize the Momentum Average approximations MA((0)) and MA((1)) to deal with multiple-phonon modes. As for a single-phonon mode, these approximations are found to be numerically very efficient. They become exact for very weak or very strong couplings, and are highly accurate in the intermediate regimes, e.g. the spectral weights obey exactly the first six, respectively eight, sum rules. Our results show that the effect on ground-state properties is cumulative in nature. As a result, if the effective coupling to one mode is much larger than to all the others, this mode effectively determines the ground-state properties. However, even very weak coupling to a second phonon mode has important non-perturbational effects on the higher-energy spectrum, in particular on the dispersion and the phonon statistics of the polaron band. This has important consequences on the analysis and interpretation of data for real materials.

“Gate tunable layer selectivity of transport in bilayer graphene nanostructures”. Abdullah HM, Zarenia M, Bahlouli H, Peeters FM, Van Duppen B, Europhysics letters 113, 17006 (2016). http://doi.org/10.1209/0295-5075/113/17006
Abstract: Recently it was found that bilayer graphene may exhibit regions with and without van der Waals coupling between the two layers. We show that such structures can exhibit a strong layer selectivity when current flows through the coupled region and that this selectivity can be tuned by means of electrostatic gating. Analysing how this effect depends on the type of bilayer stacking, the potential on the gates and the smoothness of the boundary between the coupled and decoupled regions, we show that nearly perfect layer selectivity is achievable in these systems. This effect can be further used to realise a tunable layer switch.

“Direct structural and spectroscopic investigation of ultrathin films of tetragonal CuO: Six-fold coordinated copper”. Abstract: Unlike other 3d transition metal monoxides (MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO), CuO is found in a low-symmetry distorted monoclinic structure rather than the rocksalt structure. We report here of the growth of ultrathin CuO films on SrTiO3 substrates; scanning transmission electron microscopy was used to show the stabilization of a tetragonal rocksalt structure with an elongated c-axis such that c/a similar to 1.34 and the Cu-O-Cu bond angle similar to 180 degrees, pointing to metastable six-fold coordinated Cu. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the hole at the Cu site for the CuO is localized in 3d(x2-y2) orbital unlike the well-studied monoclinic CuO phase. The experimental confirmation of the tetragonal structure of CuO opens up new avenues to explore electronic and magnetic properties of six-fold coordinated Cu. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

Abstract: We report on the observation of self-organized stripe-like structures on the as-grown surface and in the bulk of (Nd,Eu,Gd)Ba2Cu3Oy single crystals. The periodicity of the stripes on the surface lies between 500800 nm. These are possibly the growth steps of the crystal. Transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed stripes of periodicity in the range of 2040 nm in the bulk. From electron back scattered diffraction investigations, no crystallographic misorientation due to the nanostripes has been found. Scanning tunneling spectroscopic experiments revealed nonsuperconducting regions, running along twin directions, which presumably constitute strong pinning sites.

Abstract: Scanning Hall probe and local Hall magnetometry measurements have been used to investigate flux distributions in large mesoscopic superconducting disks with sizes that lie near the crossover between the bulk and mesoscopic vortex regimes. Results obtained by directly mapping the magnetic induction profiles of the disks at different applied fields can be quite successfully fitted to analytic models which assume a continuous distribution of flux in the sample. At low fields, however, we do observe clear signatures of the underlying discrete vortex structure and can resolve the characteristic mesoscopic compression of vortex clusters in increasing magnetic fields. Even at higher fields, where single-vortex resolution is lost, we are still able to track configurational changes in the vortex patterns, since competing vortex orders impose unmistakable signatures on “local” magnetisation curves as a function of the applied field. Our observations are in excellent agreement with molecular-dynamics numerical simulations which lead us to a natural definition of the lengthscale for the crossover between discrete and continuum behaviours in our system.

Abstract: We show how snake-orbit states which run along a magnetic edge can be confined electrically. We consider a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined into a quantum wire, subjected to a strong perpendicular and steplike magnetic field B/ − B. Close to this magnetic step, new, spatially confined bound states arise as a result of the lateral confinement and the magnetic-field step. The number of states, with energy below the first Landau level, increases as B becomes stronger or as the wire width becomes larger. These bound states can be understood as an interference between two counter-propagating one-dimensional snake-orbit states.

Abstract: We extend the unsymmetrized self-consistent-field method (USF) for anharmonic crystals to layered non-Bravais crystals to investigate structural, dynamical and thermodynamic properties of a free-standing graphene monolayer. In this theory, the main anharmonicity of the crystal lattice has been included and the quantum corrections are taken into account in an h-expansion for the one-particle density matrix. The obtained result for the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of graphene shows a strong temperature dependence and agrees with experimental results by Bao et al. (Nat. Nanotechnol., 4 (2009) 562). The obtained value of TEC at room temperature (300 K) is -6.4 x 10(- 6) K- 1 and it becomes positive for T > T-alpha = 358K. We find that quantum effects are significant for T < 1000 K. The interatomic distance, effective amplitudes of the graphene lattice vibrations, adiabatic and isothermal bulk moduli, isobaric and isochoric heat capacities are also calculated and their temperature dependences are determined. “Advanced electron tomography of nanoparticle assemblies”. Altantzis T, Zanaga D, Bals S, Europhysics letters 119, 38001 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1209/0295-5075/119/38001
Abstract: Nanoparticle assemblies have attracted enormous scientific interest during the last
years, due to their unique properties compared to those of their building blocks. To understand
the origin of these properties and to establish the connection with their structure, a detailed and
quantitative structural characterization is essential. Transmission electron microscopy has been
widely used to investigate nano-assemblies. However, TEM images only correspond to a twodimensional
projection of a three-dimensional object. Therefore, in order to obtain the necessary
3D structural information electron tomography has to be applied. By means of advanced electron
tomography, both qualitative and quantitative information can be obtained, which can be used
for detailed theoretical studies.
