Abstract |
Hetero-nanocrystals consisting of a CdSe core and a giant CdS shell have shown remarkable optical properties which are promising for applications in opto-electrical devices. Since these properties sensitively depend on the size and shape, a morphological characterization is of high interest. Here, we present a High Angle Annular Dark Field Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (HAADF-STEM) study of CdSe (core) / CdS (giant shell) hetero-nanocrystals. Electron tomography reveals that the nanocrystals have a bullet shape, either ending in a tip or a small dip, and that the CdSe core is positioned closer to the tip (or dip) than to the hexagonal base. Based on a high resolution HAADF-STEM study, we were able to determine all the surface facets. We present a heuristic model for the different growth stages of the CdS crystal around the CdSe core. |

Abstract |
Crystallographic shear (CS) planes provide a new structure-generation mechanism in the anion-deficient perovskites containing lone-pair cations. Pb2Sr2Bi2Fe6O16, a new n = 6 representative of the AnBnO3n2 homologous series of the perovskite-based ferrites with the CS structure, has been synthesized using the solid-state technique. The structure is built of perovskite blocks with a thickness of four FeO6 octahedra spaced by double columns of FeO5 edge-sharing distorted tetragonal pyramids, forming 1/2[110](101)p CS planes (space group Pnma, a = 5.6690(2) Å, b = 3.9108(1) Å, c = 32.643(1) Å). Pb2Sr2Bi2Fe6O16 features a wealth of microstructural phenomena caused by the flexibility of the CS planes due to the variable ratio and length of the constituting fragments with {101}p and {001}p orientation. This leads to the formation of waves, hairpins, Γ-shaped defects, and inclusions of the hitherto unknown layered anion-deficient perovskites Bi2(Sr,Pb)Fe3O8.5 and Bi3(Sr,Pb)Fe4O11.5. Using a combination of diffraction, imaging, and spectroscopic transmission electron microscopy techniques this complex microstructure was fully characterized, including direct determination of positions, chemical composition, and coordination number of individual atomic species. The complex defect structure makes these perovskites particularly similar to the CS structures in ReO3-type oxides. The flexibility of the CS planes appears to be a specific feature of the Sr-based system, related to the geometric match between the SrO perovskite layers and the {100}p segments of the CS planes. |

Abstract |
Using a combination of high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomically resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy at high energy resolution in an aberration-corrected electron microscope, we demonstrate the capability of coordination mapping in complex oxides. Brownmillerite compound Ca2FeCoO5, consisting of repetitive octahedral and tetrahedral coordination layers with Fe and Co in a fixed 3+ valency, is selected to demonstrate the principle of atomic resolution coordination mapping. Analysis of the Co-L2,3 and the Fe-L2,3 edges shows small variations in the fine structure that can be specifically attributed to Co/Fe in tetrahedral or in octahedral coordination. Using internal reference spectra, we show that the coordination of the Fe and Co atoms in the compound can be mapped at atomic resolution. |

Abstract |
Vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (v-MWCNTs) are functionalized using atomic oxygen generated in a microwave plasma. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profile analysis shows that the plasma treatment effectively grafts oxygen exclusively at the v-MWCNT tips. Electron microscopy shows that neither the vertical alignment nor the structure of v-MWCNTs were affected by the plasma treatment. Density functional calculations suggest assignment of XPS C 1s peaks at 286.6 and 287.5 eV, to epoxy and carbonyl functional groups, respectively. |

Abstract |
Atomic, layer deposition,(ALD of ruthenium using two ruthenium precursors, i.e., Ru(C5H5)(2) (RuCp2) and Ru(C5H5)(C4H4N) (RuCpPy), is studied using density functional theory. By investigating the reaction mechanisms On bare ruthenium surfaces, i.e., (001), (101), and (100), and H-terminated surfaces, an atomistic insight in the Ru ALD is provided. The calculated results show that on the Ru surfaces both RuCp2 and RuCpPy an undergo dehydrogenation and ligand dissociation reactions. RuCpPy is more reactive than RuCp2. By forming a, strong, bond between N of Py and Ru of the surface, RuCpPy can easily chemisorb on the surfaces. The reactions of RuCp2,On the Surfaces are less favorable the adsorption is not strong enough This could be a,factor contributing to the higher growth-per-cycle of Ru using RuCpPy, as observed experimentally. By Studying, the adsorption on H-terminated Ru surfaces, We showed that H Can prevent the adsorption of the precursors, thus inhibiting the growth of Ru. Our calculations indicate that the H content on the surface can have an impact on the growth-per-cycle. Finally, our simulations also demonstrate large impacts of the surface structure on the reaction mechanisms. Of the three surfaces, the (100) surface, which is the less stable and has a zigzag surface structure, is also the most reactive one. |

Abstract |
Because of its excellent properties in nanotechnology applications, atomic layer deposition of ruthenium (Ru) has been the subject of numerous experimental studies. Recently, two different Ru precursors were compared for plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) of Ru, and their reactivity was found to be different. Inhibition was observed for bis(ethylcyclopentadienyl)ruthenium (Ru(EtCp)(2)), while nearly linear growth behavior was observed for (methylcyclopentadienyl-pyrrolyl)ruthenium (Ru(MeCp)Py). To understand this difference in reactivity, we investigate the adsorption of RuCp, and RuCpPy (i.e., without substituents) on a TiN surface using calculations based on periodic boundary conditions density functional theory (DFT) combined with experiments based on Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS). The calculations demonstrate that the RuCpPy precursor chemisorbs on the TiN(100) surface while the RuCp2 precursor only physisorbs. We propose a reaction mechanism for the chemisorption of RuCpPy. The area density of the calculated RuCpPy surface species is compared with the experimental values from RBS. The impact of a H-plasma is also investigated. The DFT calculations and experimental results from RBS provide insight into the adsorption processes of the RuCpPy and RuCp2 precursors on the TiN(100) surface. |

Abstract |
MXenes, a new family of functional two-dimensional (2D) materials, have shown great potential for an extensive variety of applications within the last decade. Atomic defects and functional groups in MXenes are known to have a tremendous influence on the functional properties. In this review, we focus on recent progress in the characterization of atomic defects and functional group chemistry in MXenes, and how to control them to directly influence various properties (e.g., electron transport, Li' adsorption, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, and magnetism) of 2D MXenes materials. Dynamic structural transformations such as oxidation and growth induced by atomic defects in MXenes are also discussed. The review thus provides perspectives on property optimization through atomic defect engineering, and bottom-up synthesis methods based on defect-assisted homoepitaxial growth of MXenes. Abstract |
We investigate the performance of an atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) reactor for CO2 conversion in three different configurations, through experiments and simulations. The first (basic) configuration utilizes the well-known pin-to-plate design, which offers a limited conversion. The second configuration improves the reactor performance by employing a vortex-flow generator. The third, “confined” configuration is a complete redesign of the reactor, which encloses the discharge in a limited volume, significantly surpassing the conversion rate of the other two designs. The plasma properties are investigated using an advanced plasma model. |

Abstract |
The Plantin-Moretus Museum/Print Room in Antwerp, Belgium, gathers one of the most precious collections of typographical material and old printed books in the world. Rich decorations of this former printing-house and the history of the building itself underline its uniqueness. The cultural heritage (CH) objects collected in the museum, in particular books and manuscripts are vulnerable to the atmospheric pollution and can be irreversibly damaged. To assess the air quality inside the museum, four consecutive sampling campaigns were performed in each season of the year. The gas monitoring of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) was carried out outside the building, in galleries and in showcases by means of using diffusive samplers. The particulate matter (PM) was collected in bulk form and as single particles and then analysed with use of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and electron probe micro-analyser (EPMA), respectively. The museum complex turned out to show good protection against gaseous pollutants, especially SO2 and O3. The concentrations of these pollutants were significantly reduced inside the building in comparison to the outdoor ones. Similar protective character of the museum complex was established in case of the coarse fraction of PM; however with some limitations. Single particle analysis showed that the relative abundance of carbon-rich particles inside the museum was greater than outside. Moreover, these particles contributed more to the fine fraction of PM than to the coarse fraction. Therefore, for better preservation of cultural heritage, special attention should be paid to the small particles and their distribution within the museum. |

Abstract |
The surface termination of MXenes greatly determines the electrochemical properties and ion kinetics on their surfaces. So far, hydroxyl-, oxygen-, and fluorine-terminated MXenes have been widely studied for energy storage applications. Recently, sulfur-functionalized MXene structures, which possess low diffusion barriers, have been proposed as candidate materials to enhance battery performance. We performed first-principles calculations on the structural, stability, electrochemical, and ion dynamic properties of Li-adsorbed sulfur-functionalized groups 3B, 4B, 5B, and 6B transition-metal (M)-based MXenes (i.e., M2CS2 with M = Sc, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W). We performed phonon calculations, which indicated that all of the above M2CS2 MXenes, except for Sc, are dynamically stable at T = 0 K. The ground-state structure of each M2CS2 monolayer depends on the type of M atom. For instance, while sulfur prefers to sit at the FCC site on Ti2CS2, it occupies the HCP site of Cr-based MXene. We determined the Li adsorption configurations at different concentrations using the cluster expansion method. The highest maximum open-circuit voltages were computed for the group 4B element (i.e., Ti, Zr, and Hf)-based M2CS2, which are larger than 2.1 V, while their average voltages are approximately 1 V. The maximum voltage for the group 6B element (i.e., Cr, Mo, W)-based M2CS2 is less than 1 V, and the average voltage is less than 0.71 V. We found that S functionalization is helpful for capacity improvements over the O-terminated MXenes. In this respect, the computed storage gravimetric capacity may reach up to 417.4 mAh/g for Ti2CS2 and 404.5 mAh/g for V2CS2. Ta-, Cr-, Mo-, and W-based M2CS2 MXenes show very low capacities, which are less than 100 mAh/g. The Li surface diffusion energy barriers for all of the considered MXenes are less than 0.22 eV, which is favorable for high charging and discharging rates. Finally, ab initio molecular dynamic simulations performed at 400 K and bond-length analysis with respect to Li concentration verify that selected promising systems are robust against thermally induced perturbations that may induce structural transformations or distortions and undesirable Li release. |

Abstract |
In this paper, we used the semiconducting and lightfastness properties of synthetic and mineral arsenic sulfide pigments to study their stability by means of electrochemical and microfadometric techniques. A combination of these techniques shows that in the early stage of the degradation process, amorphous arsenic sulfides are more stable than both crystalline forms, while upon longer exposure time, amorphous pigments will fade more than both mineral pigments, making it less suitable. While the stability study was carried out on unbound pigments, the influence of the organic binder on the relative degradation of the arsenic sulfide pigments was investigated through a multi-analytical approach on pigment/binder mock-up paint samples. For this purpose, the formation of arsenic trioxide was assessed by micro Fourier transform infrared (μ-FTIR) spectroscopy while the influence of the binder on the formation of sulfates was studied by means of synchrotron radiation X-ray near edge structure (μ-XANES). Both techniques elucidate a higher stability of all pigments in gum arabic while the use of egg yolk as binder leads to the most degradation, most likely due to its sulfur-rich composition. In the context of the degradation of arsenic sulfide pigments, other binders such as animal glue, egg white or linseed oil show an intermediate impact. |

Abstract |
Pulsed laser deposition has been used to artificially construct the n = 3 Ruddlesden Popper structure La2Sr2Mn3O10 in epitaxial thin film form by sequentially layering La1-xSrxMnO3 and SrO unit cells aided by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction monitoring. The interval deposition technique was used to promote two-dimensional SrO growth. X-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicated that the trilayer structure had been formed. A site ordering was found to differ from that expected thermodynamically, with the smaller Sr2+ predominantly on the R site due to kinetic trapping of the deposited cation sequence. A dependence of the out-of-plane lattice parameter on growth pressure was interpreted as changing the oxygen content of the films. Magnetic and transport measurements on fully oxygenated films indicated a frustrated magnetic ground state characterized as a spin glass-like magnetic phase with the glass temperature T-g approximate to 34 K. The magnetic frustration has a clear in-plane (ab) magnetic anisotropy, which is maintained up to temperatures of 150 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic long-range orders, which are proposed as the origin of the low-temperature glassy state. |

Abstract |
Solid solutions of BiFe1xMnxO3 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) were prepared at ambient pressure and at 6 GPa. The ambient-pressure (AP) phases crystallize in space group R3c similarly to BiFeO3. The high-pressure (HP) phases crystallize in space group R3c for x = 0.05 and in space group Pnma for 0.15 ≤ x ≤ 0.4. The structure of HP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 was investigated using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. HP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 has a PbZrO3-related √2ap × 4ap × 2√2ap (ap is the parameter of the cubic perovskite subcell) superstructure with a = 5.60125(9) Å, b = 15.6610(2) Å, and c = 11.2515(2) Å similar to that of Bi0.82La0.18FeO3. A remarkable feature of this structure is the unconventional octahedral tilt system, with the primary ab0a tilt superimposed on pairwise clockwise and counterclockwise rotations around the b-axis according to the oioi sequence (o stands for out-of-phase tilt, and i stands for in-phase tilt). The (FeMn)O6 octahedra are distorted, with one longer metaloxygen bond (2.222.23 Å) that can be attributed to a compensation for covalent BiO bonding. Such bonding results in the localization of the lone electron pair on Bi3+ cations, as confirmed by electron localization function analysis. The relationship between HP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 and antiferroelectric structures of PbZrO3 and NaNbO3 is discussed. On heating in air, HP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 irreversibly transforms to AP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 starting from about 600 K. Both AP and HP phases undergo an antiferromagnetic ordering at TN ≈ 485 and 520 K, respectively, and develop a weak net magnetic moment at low temperatures. Additionally, ceramic samples of AP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 show a peculiar phenomenon of magnetization reversal. |

Abstract |
Lanthanumcerium oxide (LCO) films were deposited on Ni-5%W substrates by chemical solution deposition (CSD) from water-based precursors. LCO films containing different ratios of lanthanum and cerium ions (from CeO2 to La2Ce2O7) were prepared. The composition of the layers was optimized towards the formation of LCO buffer layers, lattice-matched with the superconducting YBa2Cu3Oy layer, useful for the development of coated conductors. Single, crack-free LCO layers with a thickness of up to 140 nm could be obtained in a single deposition step. The crystallinity and microstructure of these lattice-matched LCO layers were studied by X-ray diffraction techniques, RHEED and SEM. We find that only layers with thickness below 100 nm show a crystalline top surface although both thick and thin layers show good biaxial texture in XRD. On the most promising layers, AFM and (S)TEM were performed to further evaluate their morphology. The overall surface roughness varies between 3.9 and 7.5 nm, while the layers appear much more dense than the frequently used La2Zr2O7 (LZO) systems, showing much smaller nanovoids (12 nm) than the latter system. Their effective buffer layer action was studied using XPS. The thin LCO layers supported the growth of superconducting YBCO deposited using PLD methods. |

Abstract |
A novel label-free folding induced aptamer-based electrochemical biosensor for the detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) in the presence of its analogues has been developed. CAP is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which has lost its favor due to its serious adverse toxic effects on human health. Aptamers are artificial nucleic acid ligands (ssDNA or RNA) able to specifically recognize a target such as CAP. In this article, the aptamers are fixed onto a gold electrode surface by a self-assembly approach. In the presence of CAP, the unfolded ssDNA on the electrode surface changes to a hairpin structure bringing the target molecules close to the surface and trigger electron transfer. Detection limits were determined to be 1.6×10-9 mol L-1. In addition, thiamphenicol (TAP) and florfenicol (FF), antibiotics with a similar structure to CAP, did not influence the performance of the aptasensor, suggesting a good selectivity of the CAP-aptasensor. Simplicity and lower detection limit (because of the home-selected aptamers) make that the electrochemical aptasensor is suitable for practical use in the detection of CAP in milk samples. |

Abstract |
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are exciting materials due to their extensive applicability in a multitude of modern technological fields. Their most prominent characteristic and primary origin of their widespread success is the exceptional variety of their structures, which we termed 'reticular diversity'. Naturally, the ever-emerging applications of MOFs made it increasingly common that researchers from various areas delve into reticular chemistry to overcome their scientific challenges. This confers a crucial role to comprehensive overviews capable of providing newcomers with the knowledge of the state of the art, as well as with the key physics and chemistry considerations needed to design MOFs for a specific application. In this review, we commit to this purpose by outlining the fundamental understanding needed to carefully navigate MOFs' reticular diversity in their main fields of application, namely hostguest chemistry, chemical sensing, electronics, photophysics, and catalysis. Such knowledge and a meticulous, open-minded approach to the design of MOFs paves the way for their most innovative and successful applications, and for the global advancement of the research areas they are employed in.
