Abstract: Oxygen-deficient complex cobalt oxides BaCo1 − xYxO3 − y, = 0.15, 0.25 and 0.33, with a cubic perovskite structure have been synthesized in air at 1100 °C using a citrate route. Cation composition of the compounds was confirmed by energy-dispersed X-ray (EDX) microanalysis while oxygen content was determined by iodometric titration. An electron diffraction (ED) study of the x = 0.25 and 0.33 compositions show the presence of a diffuse intensity, indicating possible short-range ordering of the B cations. It was found that the treatment of BaCo0.75Y0.25O2.55 in a humid atmosphere leads to the absorption of water vapour at the first stage. Oxygen permeation studies of the ceramic membranes of BaCo0.75Y0.25O2.55 and BaCo0.67Y0.33O2.55 with variable thickness showed high oxygen fluxes of 0.170.32 µmol/cm2/s at 950 °C.

“Synthesis and characterization of photoreactive TiO2carbon nanosheet composites”. Abstract: We report the atomic layer deposition of titanium dioxide on carbon nanosheet templates and investigate the effects of postdeposition annealing in a helium environment using different characterization techniques. The crystallization of the titanium dioxide coating upon annealing is observed using in situ X-ray diffraction. The (micro)structural characterization of the films is carried out by scanning electron microscopy and advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques. Our study shows that the annealing of the atomic layer deposition processed and carbon nanosheets templated titanium dioxide layers in helium environment resulting in the formation of a porous, nanocrystalline and photocatalytically active titanium dioxide-carbon nanosheet composite film. Such composites are suitable for photocatalysis and dye-sensitized solar cells applications.

Abstract: A new cyclosilicate hydrate with composition (C6H14N)4·[Si8O16(OH)4]·12H2O was crystallized and the structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure, described by the tetragonal space group I41/a, with unit cell dimensions of a = 39.2150(2) Å and c = 14.1553(2) Å, contains columns of hydrogen-bonded cubic octamer silicate anions. The space between silicate columns holds hydrogen-bonded water and protonated hexamethyleneimine molecules compensating the negative charge of the silicate. The crystal water can be removed resulting in a rearrangement of the columns into orthorhombic symmetry. Removal of the organic moiety causes amorphisation. Flash evacuation results in a new microporous material with pore volumes typical of a zeolite.

Abstract: The Fe2(Sr2 − xAx)FeO6.5 − ä/2 systems have been investigated, by doping the iron rich 2201-type parent structure with Ba2+, La3+ and 5d10 post-transition cations. The syntheses have been carried out up to the limit of the 2201-type solid solutions, in order to test the role of the double iron layer Fe2O2.5 − ä/2. The localisation of the charge carriers in these compounds is consistent with their strong antiferro-magnetism. The investigation was then carried out in the transition part of the diagram up to the formation of stable phases. The study of structural mechanisms was carried using high resolution electron microscopy (transmission and scanning transmission), electron diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Different non-stoichiometry mechanisms are observed, depending on the electronic structure and chemical properties of the doping elements. The specific behavior of the modulated double iron layer is discussed.

Abstract: LaAMnSnO(6) (A = Sr, Ba) have been synthesized by high temperature solid-state reactions under dynamic 1% H(2)/Ar flow. Rietveld refinements on room temperature powder X-ray diffraction data indicate that LaSrMnSnO(6) crystallizes in the GdFeO(3)-structure, with space group Pnma and, combined with transmission electron microscopy, LaBaMnSnO(6) in Imma. Both space groups are common in disordered double-perovskites. The Mn(3+) and Sn(4+) ions whose valence states were confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, are completely disordered over the B-sites and the BO(6) octahedra are slightly distorted. LaAMnSnO(6) are ferromagnetic semiconductors with a T(C) = 83 K for the Sr- and 66 K for the Ba-compound. The title compounds, together with the previously reported LaCaMnSnO(6) provide an interesting example of progression from Pnma to Imma as the tolerance factor increases. An analysis of the relationship between space group and tolerance factor for the series LaAMnMO(6) (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; M = Sn, Ru) provides a better understanding of the symmetry determination for double perovskites.

Abstract: The formation of a 3D network composed of free standing and interconnected Pt nanowires is achieved by a two-step method, consisting of conformal deposition of Pt by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on a forest of carbon nanotubes and subsequent removal of the carbonaceous template. Detailed characterization of this novel 3D nanostructure was carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The characterization showed that this pure 3D nanostructure of platinum is self-supported and offers an enhancement of the electrochemically active surface area by a factor of 50.

Abstract: CdSe(core)/CdS(shell) nanorods (NRs) have been extensively investigated for their unique optical properties, such as high photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency (QE) and polarized light emission. The incorporation of these NRs in silica (SiO2) is of high interest, since this renders them processable in polar solvents while increasing their photochemical stability, which would be beneficial for their application in LEDs and as biolabels. We report the synthesis of highly luminescent silica-coated CdSe/CdS NRs, by using the reverse micelle method. The mechanism for the encapsulation of the NRs in silica is unravelled and shown to be strongly influenced by the NR shape and its asymmetry. This is attributed to both the different morphology and the different crystallographic nature of the facets terminating the opposite tips of the NRs. These results lead to the formation of a novel class of NR architectures, whose symmetry can be controlled by tuning the degree of coverage of the silica shell. Interestingly, the encapsulation of the NRs in silica leads to a remarkable increase in their photostability, while preserving their optical properties.

Abstract: Binary metal oxides with superior charge capacity and electrochemical activity have gained great interests. In this work, monodispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters on the ordered mesoporous carbons were fabricated by a facile self-developed impregnation method. The synthesized hybrids possess improved wettability, high specific surface area (> 700m(2)/g) and regular mesoporous channels (similar to 4 nm), resulting in improved electrochemical performance for supercapacitors. These well-dispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters exhibit a significant specific capacitance up to 367 F/g in the aqueous KNO3 electrolyte and good reversibility with a cycling efficiency of 99.8%. It is proposed that the mesoporous structure can facilitate the diffusion of electrolyte ions and then accelerate the electrochemical utilization of CoMoO4 nanoclusters. The results demonstrate that the produced binary metal oxide nanoclusters with excellent capacitance and good retention can be used as promising electrodes for the environment-friendly supercapacitors. Abstract: A new layered perovskite Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 has been synthesized by solid state reaction in a sealed evacuated silica tube. The crystal structure has been determined using electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, and high-angle annular dark field imaging and refined from X-ray powder diffraction data (space group P4/mmm, a=3.89023(5) Å, c=7.8034(1) Å, RI=0.023, RP=0.015). The structure is characterized by an alternation of MnO2 and (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers. Oxygen atoms and vacancies, as well as the Al and Mn atoms in the (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers are disordered. The local atomic arrangement in these layers is suggested to consist of short fragments of brownmillerite-type tetrahedral chains of corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra interrupted by MnO6 octahedra, at which the chain fragments rotate over 90°. This results in an averaged tetragonal symmetry. This is confirmed by the valence state of Mn measured by EELS. The relationship between the Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 tetragonal perovskite and the parent Sr2Al1.07Mn0.93O5 brownmillerite is discussed. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate spin glass behavior of Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2. The lack of long-range magnetic ordering contrasts with Mn-containing brownmillerites and is likely caused by the frustration of interlayer interactions due to presence of the Mn atoms in the (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers.
