Abstract |
Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has shown its potential in biomedical applications, such as wound healing, cancer treatment and bacterial disinfection. Recent experiments have provided evidence that CAP can also enhance the intracellular uptake of glucose molecules which is important in diabetes therapy. In this respect, it is essential to understand the underlying mechanisms of intracellular glucose uptake induced by CAP, which is still unclear. Hence, in this study we try to elucidate the possible mechanism of glucose uptake by cells by performing computer simulations. Specifically, we study the transport of glucose molecules through native and oxidized membranes. Our simulation results show that the free energy barrier for the permeation of glucose molecules across the membrane decreases upon increasing the degree of oxidized lipids in the membrane. This indicates that the glucose permeation rate into cells increases when the CAP oxidation level in the cell membrane is increased. |

Abstract |
Many current anti-cancer therapies rely on increasing the intracellular reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) contents with the aim to induce irreparable damage, which subsequently results in tumor cell death. A novel tool in cancer therapy is the use of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), which has been found to be very effective in the treatment of many different cancer cell types in vitro as well as in vivo, mainly through the vast generation of RONS. One of the key determinants of the cell's fate will be the interaction of RONS, generated by CAP, with important proteins, i.e. redox-regulatory proteins. One such protein is cytoglobin (CYGB), a recently discovered globin proposed to be involved in the protection of the cell against oxidative stress. In this study, the effect of plasma-produced RONS on CYGB was investigated through the treatment of CYGB with CAP for different treatment times. Spectroscopic analysis of CYGB showed that although chemical modifications occur, its secondary structure remains intact. Mass spectrometry experiments identified these modifications as oxidations of mainly sulfur-containing and aromatic amino acids. With longer treatment time, the treatment was also found to induce nitration of the heme. Furthermore, the two surface-exposed cysteine residues of CYGB were oxidized upon treatment, leading to the formation of intermolecular disulfide bridges, and potentially also intramolecular disulfide bridges. In addition, molecular dynamics and docking simulations confirmed, and further show, that the formation of an intramolecular disulfide bond, due to oxidative conditions, affects the CYGB 3D structure, thereby opening the access to the heme group, through gate functioning of His117. Altogether, the results obtained in this study (1) show that plasma-produced RONS can extensively oxidize proteins and (2) that the oxidation status of two redox-active cysteines lead to different conformations of CYGB. |

Abstract |
Today, further downscaling of mobile electronic devices poses serious problems, such as energy consumption and local heat dissipation. In this context, spin wave majority gates made of very thin ferromagnetic films may offer a viable alternative. However, similar downscaling of magnetic thin films eventually enforces the latter to operate as quasi-2D magnets, the magnetic properties of which are not yet fully understood, especially those related to anisotropies and external magnetic fields in arbitrary directions. To this end, we have investigated the behaviour of an easy-plane and easy-axis anisotropic ferromagnet-both in two and three dimensions-subjected to a uniform magnetic field, applied along an arbitrary direction. In this paper, a spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian with anisotropic exchange interactions is solved using double-time temperature-dependent Green's functions and the Tyablikov decoupling approximation. We determine various magnetic properties such as the Curie temperature and the magnetization as a function of temperature and the applied magnetic field, discussing the impact of the system's dimensionality and the type of anisotropy. The magnetic reorientation transition taking place in anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnets is studied in detail. Importantly, spontaneous magnetization is found to be absent for easy-plane 2D spin systems with short range interactions. |

Abstract |
Lath martensite is important in industry because it is the key strengthening component in many advanced high strength steels. The study of crystallography and chemistry of lath martensite is extensive in the literature, however, mostly based on fully martensitic steels. In this work, lath martensite in dual phase steels is investigated with a focus on the substructure identification of the martensite islands and microstructural bands using electron backscattered diffraction, and on the influence of the accompanied tempering process during industrial coating process on the distribution of alloying elements using atom probe tomography. Unlike findings for the fully martensitic steels, no martensite islands with all 24 Kurdjumov-Sachs variants have been observed. Almost all martensite islands contain only one main packet with all six variants and minor variants from the remaining three packets of the same prior austenite grain. Similarly, the martensite bands are typically composed of connected domains originating from prior austenite grains, each containing one main packets (mostly with all variants) and few separate variants. The effect of tempering at similar to 450 degrees C (due to the industrial zinc coating process) has also been investigated. The results show a strong carbon partitioning to lath boundaries and Cottrell atmospheres at dislocation core regions due to the thermal process of coating. In contrast, auto-tempering contributes to the carbon redistribution only in a limited manner. The substitutional elements are all homogenously distributed. The phase transformation process has two effects on the material: mechanically, the earlier-formed laths are larger and softer and therefore more ductile (as revealed by nanoindentation); chemically, due to the higher dislocation density inside the later-formed laths, which are generally smaller, carbon Cottrell atmospheres are predominantly observed. |

Abstract |
Among transition metal oxides, MnO2 is of considerable importance for various technological end-uses,from heterogeneous catalysis to gas sensing, owing to its
structural flexibility and unique properties at the nanoscale. In this work, we demonstrate the successful fabrication of supported MnO2 nanomaterials by a catalyst-free, plasmaassisted process starting from a fluorinated manganese(II)
molecular source in Ar/O2 plasmas. A thorough multitechnique characterization aimed at the systematic investigation of material structure, chemical composition, and
morphology revealed the formation of F-doped, oxygendeficient, MnO2-based nanomaterials, with a fluorine content tunable as a function of growth temperature (TG). Whereas phase-pure β-MnO2 was obtained for 100 °C ≤ TG ≤ 300 °C, the formation of mixed phase MnO2 + Mn2O3 nanosystems took place at 400 °C. In addition, the system nano-organization could be finely tailored, resulting in a controllable evolution from wheat-ear columnar arrays to high aspect ratio pointed-tip nanorod assemblies. Concomitantly, magnetic force microscopy analyses suggested the formation of spin domains with features dependent on material morphology. Preliminary tests in Vislight activated photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B aqueous solutions pave the way to possible applications of the target materials in wastewater purification. |

Abstract |
This chapter discusses modeling efforts for plasma-based CO2 conversion, which are needed to obtain better insight in the underlying mechanisms, in order to improve this application. We will discuss two types of (complementary) modeling efforts that are most relevant, that is, (i) modeling of the detailed plasma chemistry by zero-dimensional (0D) chemical kinetic models and (ii) modeling of reactor design, by 2D or 3D fluid dynamics models. By showing some characteristic calculation results of both models, for CO2 splitting and in combination with a H-source, and for packed bed DBD and gliding arc plasma, we can illustrate the type of information they can provide. |

Abstract |
In this work we study energy transport in a gliding arc discharge with two diverging flat
electrodes in argon gas at atmospheric pressure. The discharge is ignited at the shortest electrode
gap and it is pushed downstream by a forced gas flow. The current values considered are
relatively low and therefore a non-equilibrium plasma is produced. We consider two cases, i.e.
with high and low discharge current (28 mA and 2.8mA), and a constant gas flow of 10 lmin −1 ,
with a significant turbulent component to the velocity. The study presents an analysis of the
various energy transport mechanisms responsible for the redistribution of Joule heating to the
plasma species and the moving background gas. The objective of this work is to provide a
general understanding of the role of the different energy transport mechanisms in arc formation
and sustainment, which can be used to improve existing or new discharge designs. The work is
based on a three-dimensional numerical model, combining a fluid plasma model, the shear stress
transport Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes turbulent gas flow model, and a model for gas
thermal balance. The obtained results show that at higher current the discharge is constricted
within a thin plasma column several hundred kelvin above room temperature, while in the low-
current discharge the combination of intense convective cooling and low Joule heating prevents
discharge contraction and the plasma column evolves to a static non-moving diffusive plasma,
continuously cooled by the flowing gas. As a result, the energy transport in the two cases is
determined by different mechanisms. At higher current and a constricted plasma column, the
plasma column is cooled mainly by turbulent transport, while at low current and an unconstricted
plasma, the major cooling mechanism is energy transport due to non-turbulent gas convection. In
general, the study also demonstrates the importance of turbulent energy transport in
redistributing the Joule heating in the arc and its significant role in arc cooling and the formation
of the gas temperature profile. In general, the turbulent energy transport lowers the average gas
temperature in the arc, thus allowing additional control of thermal non-equilibrium in the
discharge. |

Abstract |
Reaction of the cation-ordered double perovskite Sr2ReLiO6 with dilute hydrogen at 475 degrees C leads to the topochemical deintercalation of oxide ions from the host lattice and the formation of a phase of composition Sr2ReLiO5.5, as confirmed by thermogravimetric and EELS data. A combination of neutron and electron diffraction data reveals the reduction process converts the -Sr2O2-ReLiO4-Sr2O2-ReLiO4- stacking sequence of the parent phase into a -Sr2O2-ReLiO3-Sr2O2-ReLiO4-, partially anion-vacant ordered sequence. Furthermore a combination of electron diffraction and imaging reveals Sr2ReLiO5.5 exhibits extensive twinning – a feature which can be attributed to the large, anisotropic volume expansion of the material on reduction. Magnetisation data reveal a strongly reduced moment of (eff) = 0.505(B) for the d(1) Re6+ centres in the phase, suggesting there remains a large orbital component to the magnetism of the rhenium centres, despite their location in low symmetry coordination environments. |

Abstract |
Methane needle-plane discharge has practical application prospect and scientific research significance since methane conversion heavy oil hydrogenation is formed by coupling methane needle-plane discharge with heavy oil hydrogenation, which can achieve high-efficient heavy oil hydrogenation and increase the yields of high value-added light olefins. In this paper, a two-dimensional fluid model is built up for numerically simulating the methane needle-plane discharge plasma at atmospheric pressure. Spatial and axial distributions of electric intensity, electron temperature and particle densities are obtained. Reaction yields are summarized and crucial pathways to produce various kinds of charged and neutral particles are found out. Simulation results indicate that axial evolutions of CH3+ and CH4+ densities, electric intensity and electron temperature are similar and closely related. The CH5+ and C2H5+ densities first increase and then decrease along the axial direction. The CH3 and H densities have nearly identical spatial and axial distributions. Particle density distributions of CH2, C2H4 and C2H5 are obviously different in the area near the cathode but comparatively resemblant in the positive column region. The CH3+ and CH4+ are produced by electron impact ionizations between electrons and CH4. The CH5+ and C2H5+ are respectively generated by molecular impact dissociations between CH3+ and CH4 and between CH4+ and CH4. Electron impact decomposition between electrons and CH4 is a dominated reaction to produce CH3, CH2, CH and H. The reactions between CH2 and CH4 and between electrons and C2H4 are critical pathways to produce C2H4 and C2H2, respectively. In addition, the yields of electron impact decomposition reactions between electrons and CH4 and reactions between CH2 and CH4 account for 52.15% and 47.85% of total yields of H-2 respectively. |

Abstract |
Because of its unique properties, plasma technology has gained much prominence in the
microelectronics industry. Recently, environmental and energy applications of plasmas have gained a lot of attention. In this area, the focus is on converting CO 2 and reforming hydrocarbons, with the goal of developing an efficient single-step ‘gas-to-liquid’ (GTL) process. Here we show that applying tri-reforming principles to plasma—further called ‘plasma-based multi-reforming’—allows us to better control the plasma chemistry and thus the formed products. To demonstrate this, we used chemical kinetics calculations supported by experiments and reveal that better control of the plasma chemistry can be achieved by adding O 2 or H 2 O to a mixture containing CH 4 and CO 2 (diluted in N 2 ). Moreover, by adding O 2 and H 2 O simultaneously, we can tune the plasma chemistry even further, improving the conversions, thermal efficiency and methanol yield. Unlike thermocatalytic reforming, plasma-based reforming is capable of producing methanol in a single step; and compared with traditional plasma-based dry reforming, plasma-based multi-reforming increases the methanol yield by more than seven times and the thermal efficiency by 49%, as revealed by our model calculations. Thus, we believe that by using plasma-based multi-reforming, ‘gas-to-liquid’ conversion may be made efficient and scalable. |

Abstract |
Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a promising technology against multiple types of cancer. However, the current findings on the effect of CAP on two-dimensional glioblastoma cultures do not consider the role of the tumour microenvironment. The aim of this study was to determine the ability of CAP to reduce and control glioblastoma spheroid tumours in vitro . Three-dimensional glioblastoma spheroid tumours (U87-Red, U251-Red) were consecutively treated directly and indirectly with a CAP using dry He, He + 5% H 2 O or He + 20% H 2 O. The cytotoxicity and spheroid shrinkage were monitored using live imaging. The reactive oxygen and nitrogen species produced in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) were measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and colourimetry. Cell migration was also assessed. Our results demonstrate that consecutive CAP treatments (He + 20% H 2 O) substantially shrank U87-Red spheroids and to a lesser degree, U251-Red spheroids. The cytotoxic effect was due to the short- and long-lived species delivered by CAP: they inhibited spheroid growth, reduced cell migration and decreased proliferation in CAP-treated spheroids. Direct treatments were more effective than indirect treatments, suggesting the importance of CAP-generated, short-lived species for the growth inhibition and cell cytotoxicity of solid glioblastoma tumours. We concluded that CAP treatment can effectively reduce glioblastoma tumour size and restrict cell migration, thus demonstrating the potential of CAP therapies for glioblastoma. |

Abstract |
Multiple electrochemical processes are involved at the catalyst/ electrolyte interface during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). With the purpose of elucidating the complexity of surface dynamics upon OER, we systematically studied two Ni-based crystalline oxides (LaNiO3−δ and La2Li0.5Ni0.5O4) and compared them with the state-of-the-art Ni−Fe (oxy)- hydroxide amorphous catalyst. Electrochemical measurements such as rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) and electrochemical quartz microbalance microscopy (EQCM) coupled with a series of physical characterizations including transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were conducted to unravel the exact pH effect on both the OER activity and the catalyst stability. We demonstrate that for Ni-based crystalline catalysts the rate for surface degradation depends on the pH and is greater than the rate for surface reconstruction. This behavior is unlike that for the amorphous Ni oxyhydroxide catalyst, which is found to be more stable and pH-independent. |

Abstract |
Nonthermal plasma is a promising alternative for ammonia synthesis at gentle conditions. Metal meshes of Fe, Cu, Pd, Ag, and Au were employed as catalysts in radio frequency plasma for ammonia synthesis. The energy yield for all these transition metal catalysts ranged between 0.12 and 0.19 g-NH3/kWh at 300 W and, thus, needs further improvement. In addition, a semimetal, pure gallium, was used for the first time as catalyst for ammonia synthesis, with energy yield of 0.22 g-NH3/kWh and with a maximum yield of ∼10% at 150 W. The emission spectra, as well as computer simulations, revealed hydrogen recombination as a primary governing parameter, which depends on the concentration or flux of H atoms in the plasma and on the catalyst surface. The simulations helped to elucidate the underlying mechanism, implicating the dominance of surface reactions and surface adsorbed species. The rate limiting step appears to be NH2 formation on the surface of the reactor wall and on the catalyst surface, which is different from classical catalysis. |

Abstract |
The possibility of an inhomogeneous charge density wave phase is investigated in a system of two coupled electron and hole monolayers separated by a hexagonal boron nitride insulating layer. The charge-density-wave state is induced through the assumption of negative compressibility of electron/hole gases in a Coulomb drag configuration between the electron and hole sheets. Under equilibrium conditions, we derive analytical expressions for the density oscillation along the zigzag and armchair directions. We find that the density modulation not only depends on the sign of the compressibility but also on the anisotropy of the low-energy bands. Our results are applicable to any two-dimensional system with anisotropic parabolic bands, characterized by different effective masses. For equal effective masses, i.e., isotropic energy bands, our results agree with Hroblak et al. [Phys. Rev. B 96, 075422 (2017)]. Our numerical results are applied to phosphorene. |

Abstract |
Non-charge-based logic devices are promising candidates for future logic circuits. Interest in studying and developing these devices has grown dramatically in the past decade as they possess key advantages over conventional CMOS technology. Due to their novel designs, a large number of micromagnetic simulations are required to fully characterize the behavior of these devices. The number and complexity of these simulations place large computational requirements on device development. We use state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to expedite identification of their behavior. Several intelligent sampling strategies are combined with machine learning multi-class classification models. These techniques are applied to a recently developed exchange-driven magnetic logic scheme that utilizes direct exchange coupling as the main driver. |

Abstract |
As the field of perovskite optoelectronics developed, a plethora of strategies has arisen to control their electronic and morphological characteristics for the purpose of producing high efficiency devices. Unfortunately, despite this wealth of deposition approaches, the community experiences a great deal of irreproducibility between different laboratories, batches and preparation methods. Aiming to address this issue, we developed a simple deposition method based on gas quenching that yields smooth films for a wide range of perovskite compositions, in single, double, triple and quadruple cation varieties, and produces planar heterojunction devices with competitive efficiencies, so far up to 20%. |

Abstract |
Infrared artwork inspection is typically performed through active thermography and infrared reflectography (IRR) with different setups and cameras. While IRR is an established technique in the museum field, exploiting mainly the IR-A (0.7 – 1.4 mu m) band to probe for hidden layers and modifications within the paint stratigraphy system, active thermography operating in the IR-C range (3 -5 mu m) is less frequently employed with the aim to visualize structural defects and features deeper inside the build-up. In this work, we investigate the usability of an IR-B+C system to identify overpainted works of art below a relatively thick absorbing layer of lead white paint. |

Abstract |
An important issue in biodiversity valuation is gaining a better understanding of how biodiversity conservation affects economic activities and human welfare. Quantifying the economic benefits of biodiversity for human well-being is not straightforward. Here, we expand the ecosystem service cascade by (i) attributing a methodology to the different steps of the cascade to assess the effects of changes in functional group diversity on economic activities; (ii) including multiple attributes for defining functional diversity and (iii) integrating a dynamic ecological model simulating complex interactions and feedbacks between species with an economic model assessing the effects of changes in functional group diversity for gross revenues. The stepwise methodological framework integrates a production function approach with a market price-based approach in order to investigate the indirect use value of functional group diversity based on the ecological role of species in the ecosystem. The methodology is applied to estimate the relationship between the gross economic value of Chinook salmon (Pacific Northwest, United States) and the diversity of freshwater macroinvertebrates. The results of our analysis emphasize the importance of biological diversity for sustaining ecosystem goods and services. The analysis provides a tractable framework for quantitatively exploring the economic consequences of changes in functional group diversity. |

Abstract |
The study analysed the factors that affect the internal governance quality of corporations in Ethiopia. It performed an ordered logistic regression analysis on a randomly selected sample of 76 corporations to analyse the effect of the ownership structure, form of ownership (private or government), leverage, corporate size, and sales growth on the internal governance quality score (IGQS). The governance quality score was measured using 20 indices categorized into four perspectives: disclosure, board characteristics, ethics, and shareholder rights. In this study, a significant positive effect of the corporate size and sales growth on the IGQS was found. In addition, government-owned corporations were found to perform better than privately owned corporations. It is recommended that appropriate authorities and officials should encourage the use of the corporate governance system in privately owned corporations and the convergence of internal governance quality of the two groups of corporations to the highest level. |

Abstract |
A new Sillen – Aurivillius family of layered bismuth oxyhalides has been designed and successfully constructed on the basis of PbBiO2X(X = halogen) synthetic perites and g-form of Bi2VO5.5 solid elec- trolyte. This demonstrates, for the first time, the ability of the latter to serve as a building block in construction of mixed-layer structures. The parent compound PbBi3VO7.5-dCl (d = 0.05) has been investigated by powder XRD, TEM, XPS methods and magnetic susceptibility measurements. An unexpected but important condition for the formation of the mixed-layer structure is partial (ca. 5%) reduction of VV into VIV which probably suppresses competitive formation of apatite-like Pb – Bi vanadates. This reduction also stabilizes the g polymorphic form of Bi2VO5.5 not only in the intergrowth structure, but in Bi2V1-xMxO5.5-y (M – Nb, Sb) solid solutions. |

Abstract |
It is generally known that antidiabetic activity is associated with an increased level of glucose uptake in adipocytes and skeletal muscle cells. However, the role of exogenous reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in muscle development and more importantly in glucose uptake is largely unknown. We investigate the effect of RONS generated by cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) in glucose uptake. We show that the glucose uptake is significantly enhanced in differentiated L6 skeletal muscle cells after CAP treatment. We also observe a significant increase of the intracellular Ca++ and ROS level, without causing toxicity. One of the possible reasons for an elevated level of glucose uptake as well as intracellular ROS and Ca++ ions is probably the increased oxidative stress leading to glucose transport. |

Abstract |
The critical current I-c(B) of YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) coated conductors can be increased by growing thicker superconductor layers as well as improving the critical current density J(c)(B) by the incorporation of artificial pinning centers. We studied the properties of pulsed laser deposited BaHfO3 (BHO)-doped YBCO films with thicknesses of up to 5 mu m on buffered rolling-assisted biaxially textured Ni-5 at % W tape and alternating beam assisted deposition textured Yttrium-stabilized ZrO2 layers on stainless steel. X-Ray diffraction confirms the epitaxial growth of the superconductor on the buffered metallic template. BHO additions reduce the film porosity and lower the probability to grow misoriented grains, hence preventing the J(c) decrease observed in undoped YBCO films with thicknesses > 2 mu m. Thereby, a continuous increase in I-c at 77 K is achieved. A mixed structure of secondary phase nanorods and platelets with different orientations increases J(c)(B) in the full angular range and simultaneously lowers the J(c) anisotropy compared to pristine YBCO. |

Abstract |
The resistance of a TiO2 anatase (001) surface to coke formation was studied in the context of dry reforming of methane using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As carbon atoms act as precursors for coke formation, the resistance to coke formation can be measured by the carbon coverage of the surface. This is related to the stability of different CHx (x = 0−3) species and their rate of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation on the TiO2 surface. Therefore, we studied the reaction mechanisms and their corresponding rates as a function of the temperature for the dehydrogenation of the species on the surface. We found that the stabilities of C and CH are significantly lower than those of CH3 and CH2. The hydrogenation rates of the different species are significantly higher than the dehydrogenation rates in a temperature range of 300−1000 K. Furthermore, we found that dehydrogenation of CH3, CH2, and CH will only occur at appreciable rates starting from 600, 900, and 900 K, respectively. On the basis of these results, it is clear that the anatase (001) surface has a high coke resistance, and it is thus not likely that the surface will become poisoned by coke during dry reforming of methane. As the rate limiting step in dry reforming is the dissociative adsorption of CH4, we studied an alternative approach to thermal catalysis. We found that the temperature threshold for dry reforming is at least 700 K. This threshold temperature may be lowered by the use of plasma-catalysis, where the appreciable rates of adsorption of plasma-generated CHx radicals result in bypassing the rate limiting step of the reaction. |

Abstract |
We have discovered two novel types of planar defects that appear in heteroepitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-delta(YBCO123) thin films, grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) either with or without a La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) overlayer, using the combination of highangle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping for unambiguous identification. These planar lattice defects are based on the intergrowth of either a BaO plane between two CuO chains or multiple Y-O layers between two CuO2 planes, resulting in non-stoichiometric layer sequences that could directly impact the high-Tc superconductivity. Abstract |
We present a theoretical investigation of the plasmon-polariton modes in grating coupled graphene inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. The cavity or photon modes of the device are determined by the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulations and the corresponding plasmon-polariton modes are obtained by applying a many-body self-consistent field theory. We find that in such a device structure, the electric field strength of the incident electromagnetic (EM) field can be significantly enhanced near the edges of the grating strips. Thus, the strong coupling between the EM field and the plasmons in graphene can be achieved and the features of the plasmon-polariton oscillations in the structure can be observed. It is found that the frequencies of the plasmon-polariton modes are in the terahertz (THz) bandwidth and depend sensitively on electron density which can be tuned by applying a gate voltage. Moreover, the coupling between the cavity photons and the plasmons in graphene can be further enhanced by increasing the filling factor of the device. This work can help us to gain an in-depth understanding of the THz plasmonic properties of graphene-based structures. |

Strain analyses from experimental series of nano-beam electron diffraction (NBED) patterns in scanning transmission electron microscopy are performed for different specimen tilts. Simulations of NBED series are presented for which strain analysis gives results that are in accordance with experiment. This consequently allows to study the relation between measured strain and actual underlying strain. A two-tilt method which can be seen as lowest-order electron beam precession is suggested and experimentally implemented. Strain determination from NBED series with increasing beam convergence is performed in combination with the experimental realization of a probe-forming aperture with a cross inside. It is shown that using standard evaluation techniques, the influence of beam convergence on spatial resolution is lower than the influence of sharp rings around the diffraction disc which occur at interfaces and which are caused by the tails of the intensity distribution of the electron probe. Abstract |
The present work reports on the microstructural evolution of a new heat of 24% cold worked austenitic DIN 1.4970 (15-15Ti) nuclear cladding steel subjected to ageing heat treatments of varying duration between 500 and 800 degrees C (by steps of 100 degrees C). The primary aim was studying the finely dispersed Ti-C nanoprecipitate population, which are thought to be beneficial for creep and swelling resistance during service. Their size distribution and number density were estimated through dark field imaging and bright field Moire imaging techniques in the transmission electron microscope. Nanoprecipitates formed at and above 600 degrees C, which is a lower temperature than previously reported. The observed nucleation, growth and coarsening behavior of the nanoprecipitates were consistent with simple diffusion arguments. The formation of nanoprecipitates coincided with significant dissociation of dislocations as evidenced by weak beam dark field imaging. Possible mechanisms, including Silcock's stacking fault growth model and Suzuki segregation, are discussed. Recrystallization observed after extended ageing at 800 degrees C caused the redissolution of nanoprecipitates. Large primary Ti(C,N) and (Ti,Mo)C precipitates that occur in the as-received material, and M23C6 precipitates that nucleate on grain boundaries at low temperatures were also characterized by a selective dissolution procedure involving filtration, X-ray diffraction and quantitative Rietveld refinement. The partitioning of key elements between the different phases was derived by combining these findings and was consistent with thermodynamic considerations and the processing history of the steel.
