Abstract: We investigated the magnetic field dependence of the Hall and the bend resistances in the ballistic regime for a single layer graphene Hall bar structure containing a pn-junction. When both regions are n-type the Hall resistance dominates and Hall type of plateaus are formed. These plateaus occur as a consequence of the restriction on the angle imposed by Snell's law allowing only electrons with a certain initial angles to transmit though the potential step. The size of the plateau and its position is determined by the position of the potential interface as well as the value of the applied potential. When the second region is p-type, the bend resistance dominates, which is asymmetric in field due to the presence of snake states. Changing the position of the pn-interface in the Hall bar strongly affects these states and therefore the bend resistance is also changed. Changing the applied potential, we observe that the bend resistance exhibits a peak around the charge-neutrality point (CNP), which is independent of the position of the pn-interface, while the Hall resistance shows a sign reversal when the CNP is crossed, which is in very good agreement with a recent experiment [J. R. Williams and C. M. Marcus, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 046602 (2011)].

Abstract: We theoretically investigate the electronic transport properties of two closely spaced L-shaped semiconductor quantum wires, for different configurations of the output channel widths as well as the distance between the wires. Within the effective-mass approximation, we solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation using the split-operator technique that allows us to calculate the transmission probability, the total probability current, the conductance, and the wave function scattering between the energy subbands. We determine the maximum distance between the quantum wires below which a relevant non-zero transmission is still found. The transmission probability and the conductance show a strong dependence on the width of the output channel for small distances between the wires. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision simulations, coupled with an external circuit, are used to investigate the behavior of pulsed dual-frequency (DF) capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs). It is found that the phase shift θ between the high (or low) frequency source and the pulse modulation has a great influence on the ion density and the ionization rate. By pulsing the high frequency source, the time-averaged ion density shows a maximum when θ = 90∘. The time-averaged ion energy distribution functions (IEDFs) at the driven electrode, however, keep almost unchanged, illustrating the potential of pulsed DF-CCP for independent control of ion density (and flux) and ion energy. A detailed investigation of the temporal evolution of the plasma characteristics indicates that several high frequency harmonics can be excited at the initial stage of a pulse period by tuning the phase shift θ, and this gives rise to strong sheath oscillations, and therefore high ionization rates. For comparison, the pulsing of the low frequency source is also studied. In this case, the ion density changes slightly as a function of time, and the time-averaged ion density shows the same trend as in the HF modulation for different phase shifts θ. Moreover, the time-averaged IEDFs at the driven electrode can be modulated, showing the potential to reduce the maximum ion bombardment energy.

Abstract: The interaction between the surface of a 3D topological insulator and a skyrmion/anti-skyrmion structure is studied in order to investigate the possibility of electron confinement due to the skyrmion presence. Both hedgehog (Neel) and vortex (Bloch) skyrmions are considered. For the hedgehog skyrmion, the in-plane components cannot be disregarded and their interaction with the surface state of the topological insulator (TI) has to be taken into account. A semi-classical description of the skyrmion chiral angle is obtained using the variational principle. It is shown that both the hedgehog and the vortex skyrmion can induce bound states on the surface of the TI. However, the number and the properties of these states depend strongly on the skyrmion type and the skyrmion topological number N-Sk. The probability densities of the bound electrons are also derived where it is shown that they are localized within the skyrmion region. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract: We present a detailed theoretical study on the optoelectronic properties of topological insulator thin film (TITFs). The k . p approach is employed to calculate the energy spectra and wave functions for both the bulk and surface states in the TITF. With these obtained results, the optical conductivities induced by different electronic transitions among the bulk and surface states are evaluated using the energy-balance equation derived from the Boltzmann equation. We find that for Bi2Se3-based TITFs, three characteristic regimes for the optical absorption can be observed. (i) In the low radiation frequency regime (photon energy (h) over bar omega < 200 meV), the free-carrier absorption takes place due to intraband electronic transitions. An optical absorption window can be observed. (ii) In the intermediate radiation frequency regime (200 < (h) over bar omega < 300 meV), the optical absorption is induced mainly by interband electronic transitions from surface states in the valance band to surface states in the conduction band and an universal value sigma(0) = e(2) / (8<(h)over bar>) for the optical conductivity can be obtained. (iii) In the high radiation frequency regime ((h) over bar omega > 300 meV), the optical absorption can be achieved via interband electronic transitions from bulk and surface states in the valance band to bulk and surface states in the conduction band. A strong absorption peak can be observed. These interesting findings indicate that optical measurements can be applied to identify the energy regimes of bulk and surface states in the TITF. Abstract: Oriented Co nanoparticles were obtained by Co ion implantation in crystalline ZnO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of elliptically shaped Co precipitates with nanometer size, which are embedded in the ZnO thin films, resulting in anisotropic magnetic behavior. The low-temperature resistance of the Co-implanted ZnO thin films follows the Efros-Shklovskii type variable-range-hopping. Large negative magnetoresistance (MR) exceeding 10% is observed in a magnetic field of 1 T at 2.5K and the negative MR survives up to 250K (0.3%). The negative MR reveals hysteresis as well as anisotropy that correlate well with the magnetic properties, clearly demonstrating the presence of spin-dependent transport. Abstract: Ballistic transport of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a rectangle shaped wire, subjected to a local nonhomogeneous magnetic field that results from an in-plane magnetized ferromagnetic (FM) strip deposited above the 2DEG, is investigated theoretically. We found a positive magnetoresistance (MR), which exhibits hysteresis behavior with respect to the direction of the magnetic field sweep, in agreement with a recent experiment. This positive MR can be tuned by applying a gate voltage to the FM strip.

Abstract: Electronic transport properties of a graphene-silicene bilayer system are studied using density-functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. Depending on the energy of the electrons, the transmission can be larger in this system as compared to the sum of the transmissions of separated graphene and silicene monolayers. This effect is related to the increased electron density of states in the bilayer sample. At some energies, the electronic states become localized in one of the layers, resulting in the suppression of the electron transmission. The effect of an applied voltage on the transmission becomes more pronounced in the layered sample as compared to graphene due to the larger variation of the electrostatic potential profile. Our findings will be useful when creating hybrid nanoscale devices where enhanced transport properties will be desirable. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: We investigate the energy levels and persistent currents of MoS2 quantum rings having different shapes and edge types in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field by means of the tight-binding approach. We find states localized at the inner and outer boundaries of the ring. These energy levels exhibit different magnetic field dependences for the inner and outer ring states due to their different localization properties. They both exhibit the usual Aharanov-Bohm oscillations but with different oscillation periods. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, we show distinct spin and charge persistent currents for inner and outer ring states. We find well-defined spin currents with negligibly small charge currents. This is because the local currents of spin-up and -down states flow in opposite directions.

Abstract: We apply an implicit particle-in-cell Monte-Carlo (PIC-MC) method to study a radio-frequency argon microdischarge at steady state in the glow discharge limit, in which the microdischarge is sustained by secondary electron emission from the electrodes. The plasma density, electron energy distribution function (EEDF), and electron temperature are calculated in a wide range of operating conditions, including driving voltage, microdischarge gap, and pressure. Also, the effect of gap size scaling (in the range of 50-1000 μm) on the plasma sustaining voltage and peak electron density at atmospheric pressure is examined, which has not been explored before. In our simulations, three different EEDFs, i.e., a so-called three temperature hybrid mode, a two temperature α mode, and a two temperature γ mode distribution, are identified at different gaps and voltages. The maximum sustaining voltage to avoid a transition from the glow mode to an arc is predicted, as well as the minimum sustaining voltage for a steady glow discharge. Our calculations elucidate that secondary electrons play an essential role in sustaining the discharge, and as a result the relationship between breakdown voltage and gap spacing is far away from the Paschen law at atmospheric pressure.

Abstract: We present a theoretical study of the optoelectronic properties of bilayer graphene. The optical conductance and transmission coefficient are calculated using the energy-balance equation derived from a Boltzmann equation for an air/graphene/dielectric-wafer system. For short wavelengths (<0.2 µm), we obtain the universal optical conductance =e2/(2). Interestingly, there exists an optical absorption window in the wavelength range 10100 µm, which is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorptions in the presence of the MossBurstein effect. As a result, the position and width of this absorption window depend sensitively on temperature, carrier density, and sample mobility of the system. These results are relevant for applications of recently developed graphene devices in advanced optoelectronics such as the infrared photodetectors.

Abstract: Ando's model provides a rigorous quantum-mechanical framework for electron-surface roughness scattering, based on the detailed roughness structure. We apply this method to metallic nanowires and improve the model introducing surface roughness distribution functions on a finite domain with analytical expressions for the average surface roughness matrix elements. This approach is valid for any roughness size and extends beyond the commonly used Prange-Nee approximation. The resistivity scaling is obtained from the self-consistent relaxation time solution of the Boltzmann transport equation and is compared to Prange-Nee's approach and other known methods. The results show that a substantial drop in resistivity can be obtained for certain diameters by achieving a large momentum gap between Fermi level states with positive and negative momentum in the transport direction. Abstract: Glass ceramic composites were prepared by bulk crystallization of NaNbO3 in sodium niobium borate glasses. A homogeneous bulk crystallization of the NaNbO3 phase takes place during heat treatments that produces visible-near infrared transparent materials with similar to 30 nm NaNbO3 nanocrystallites. Upon thermal poling, a strong Na+ depleted nonlinear optical thin layer is observed at the anode side that should induce a large internal static electric field. In addition, the chi((2)) response of the poled glass ceramic composites increases from 0.2 up to 1.9 pm/V with the rate of crystallization. Two mechanisms may be considered: a pure structural chi((2)) process connected with the occurrence of a spontaneous ferroelectric polarization or an increase of the chi((3)) response of the nanocrystallites that enhances the electric field induced second harmonic generation process.
