Abstract |
(Sr1-xCax)(33)Bi-24,partial derivative Al48O141+3 partial derivative/2 fullerenoid solid solutions have been synthesized and the effect of partial substitution of Sr by Ca has been characterized by (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, applying different imaging methods. Most of the defects commonly observed in face centered cubic compounds, have also been observed in (Sr1-xCax)(33)Bi24-partial derivative Al48O141+3 partial derivative/2. Based on purely geometrical and topological models, structural presentations for the coherent twin boundaries and stacking faults have been constructed on the basis of complex spherical “Al84O210” units. The results are compared to defects observed in the crystallite fullerite C-60. |

Abstract |
For the first time, the local structure and physical properties of Ru1222 based compounds (RuSr(2)Gd(1.4)Ce(0.6)Cu(2)O(10-delta) and RuSr(2)Gd(1.8-x)Y(0.2)CexCu(2)O(10) (x = 0.90-0.55)) have been investigated and analyzed together on the very same compounds. The Ru1222 superstructure was confirmed by TEM at a local scale and was suggested to have an orthorhombic symmetry with space group Aba2 and lattice parameters a(s) similar or equal to root 2a, b(s) similar or equal to root 2a and c(s) = c. This new Ru1222 superstructure distortion from tetragonal symmetry is proposed to have a positive correlation with the superconductivity variation of these compounds. The more the distortion towards orthorhombic symmetry, the higher the critical superconducting temperature these compounds can achieve. The T(c)(0) of RuSr(2)Gd(1.8-x)Y(0.2)Ce(x)Cu(2)O(10-delta) (x = 0.85-0.55) increases monotonically from 4 to 16 K when x decreases from 0.85 to 0.70, then RuSr(2)Gd(2)Cu(2)O(8) defects emerge and the T(c) decreases with decreasing x. Ru1212 defects are observed to intergrow epitaxially with the Ru1222 structure as lamellas along the c-axis in RuSr(2)Gd(1.4)Ce(0.6)Cu(2)O(10-delta). Although Ru1212 is a superconductor, the intergrowth severely restrains its superconductivity. |

Abstract |
The analysis of high-frequency electromagnetic field (HFEMF) effects on the microstructure and electrical properties of Te+ implanted (0 0 1) Si is reported. Cross-sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (XHRTEM) demonstrates the formation of Te nanoclusters (NCs) embedded in the Si layer amorphized by implantation (a-Si) at fluences greater than or equal to 1 x 10(16) cm(-2). Post-implantation treatment with 0.45 MHz HFEMF leads to enlargement of Te NCs, their diffusion and accumulation at the a-Si surface and formation of laterally connected extended tellurium structures above the percolation threshold, appearing at an ion fluence of 1 x 10(17) cm(-2). AC electrical conductivity measurements show nearly four orders of magnitude decrease of impedance resistivity in this case, which is in good agreement with the results of our structural studies. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the two-phase isotropic spinodal structure. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Based on a facile one-pot templating synthesis, using a TS-1 zeolite recipe whereby part of the zeolite structure directing agent is replaced by a mesopore templating agent, a trimodal material is formed. The resulting meso-TSM material combines mesoporosity (Ti-MCM-41) with zeolitic features (TS-1) and a unique sheet-like morphology with uniform macroporous voids (macroholes). Moreover, the macrohole formation, mesoporosity and zeolitic properties of the meso-TSM material can be controlled in a straightforward way by adjusting the length of the hydrothermal treatment. This newly developed material may imply great potential for catalytic redox applications and diffusion limitated processes because of its highly tunable character in all three dimensions (micro-, meso- and macroporous scale). |

Abstract |
The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization of mixed-valence bismuthates with three- or two-dimensional perovskite-like structures and structural criteria that influence superconductivity in these compounds. Single-phase samples of Sr1-xKxBiO3 were prepared for the broad range of K-content: 0.25 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65. For these bismuthates the symmetry of the structure changes from monoclinic to orthorhombic and finally to tetragonal upon increasing the K-content thus resulting in the decrease of the Bi-O distances and reduction of the network distortions. Superconductivity with maximum T-c = 12 K exists in the narrow range (x approximate to 0.5-0.6) within the stability field of the tetragonal phase (0.33 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65), when the three-dimensional octahedral framework has close to the ideal perovskite structure arrangement. The layered type (Ba,K)(3)Bi2O7 and (Ba,K)(2)BiO4 bismuthates belonging to the A(n+1)B(n)O(3n+1) homologous series were investigated. Buckling of the (BiO2) layers in the structure of the n = 2 member occurs due to the ordering of alkaline- and alkaline-earth cations between two independent positions. The formation of the one-layer bismuthate was revealed by Electron Microscopy and XRPD studies. Both types of compounds are considered to be possible candidates for new superconducting materials among bismuthates. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. |

Abstract |
Exploring self-assembled nanostructures with controllable architectures has been a central theme in nanoscience and nanotechnology because of the tantalizing perspective of directly integrating such bottom-up nanostructures into functional devices. Here, the growth of kinked single-crystal In2O3 nanostructures consisting of a nanocone base and a nanowire tip with an epitaxial and defect-free transition is demonstrated for the first time. By tailoring the growth conditions, a reliable switching of the growth direction from [111] to [110] or [112] is observed when the Au catalyst nanoparticles at the apexes of the nanocones shrink below approximate to 100 nm. The natural formation of kinked nanoarchitectures at constant growth pressures is related to the size-dependent free energy that changes for different orientations of the nanowires. The results suggest that the mechanism of forming such kinked nanocone-nanowire nanostructures in well-controlled growth environment may be universal for a wide range of functional materials. |

Abstract |
Infrared absorption spectra of polyhedral and platelet oxygen precipitates are analyzed using a modified Day-Thorpe approach (J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 11 (1999) 2551). The aspect ratio has been determined by TEM measurements. The reduced spectral function and the stoichiometry are extracted from the absorption spectra and the concentration of precipitated interstitial oxygen. One set of spectra reveal a Frohlich frequency around 1100 cm(-1) and another around 1110-1120 cm(-1). It is shown that the shift in the Frohlich frequency is not due to a different stoichiometry, but due to the detailed structure in the reduced spectral function. The oxygen precipitates consist of SiO. with gammaapproximate to1.1-1.2+/-0.1. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
We have investigated epitaxially grown single-crystalline Ca-doped LaMnO3 thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique in a case study aimed to explore the possibilities buried in epitaxial stress tailoring in order to control the transport properties of CMR materials beyond the limits set by equilibrium thermodynamics. Depending on the film thickness there is an abrupt transition from pseudomorphic to epitaxial granular growth observable which is related to the epitaxial strain of the films. This is associated with microscopic stress relaxation and leads to well controllable modifications of the atomic arrangements of the Mn-O sublattice in the films. Due to the interrelation of double exchange, spin-, charge- and orbital ordering and the Jahn-Teller effect mediated coupling of the electronic system to the crystal lattice, the magnetotransport properties of the firms can be modified in a controllable way. |

Abstract |
Results are presented on the photoluminescence (PL) characterization of heavily doped p(+) Czochralski silicon, which has been subjected to a two-step, oxygen precipitation heat treatment. It will be shown that the presence of oxygen precipitates gives rise to the D1, D2 and D5 lines, where the energy of the D1 line shifts to lower values for a stronger degree of precipitation. The occurrence of these PL features is also a function of the boron concentration in the p(+) material. The PL results are compared with Fourier transform infrared absorption data and with transmission electron microscope, results. From this, it is concluded that PL has a good potential for use in the assessment of oxygen precipitation in heavily doped silicon. |

Abstract |
The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization of mixed-valence bismuthates with 3- or 2-dimensional perovskite-like structures and structural criteria that influence superconductivity in these compounds. Superconductivity with maximum T-c = 12K exists in the narrow range (x approximate to 0.5 – 0.6) within the stability field of the tetragonal phase (0.33 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65), when the 3-dimensional octahedral framework has close to the ideal perovskite structure arrangement. At the same time compositions with close to optimal Bi-valence (x = 0.33 and 0.43) do not show any sign of superconductivity, probably, due to structural distortions. The layered type (BaK)(3)Bi2O7 and (Ba,K)(2)BiO4 bismuthates belonging to the A(n+1)B(n)O(3n+1) homologous series were investigated Buckling of the (BiO2) layers in the structure of the n = 2 member was revealed The formation of the n=1 bismuthate was found by Electron Microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction studies. Both types of compounds are considered to be possible candidates for new superconducting materials among bismuthates. |

Abstract |
Infrared absorption spectra of composite precipitates are analysed with a modified Day-Thorpe algorithm, assuming a precipitated phase consisting of a mixture of two components with known optical properties. Additional constraints are introduced when solving the model equations by using a priori knowledge making the algorithm more reliable. It is shown that this novel approach allows determining both morphology and composition of precipitates. The method is applied to characterise oxide precipitates in boron-doped silicon. The results indicate that for the resistivity range above 60 mOmegacm, the precipitated phase is most probably SiO1.17+/-0.14, while for resistivities below 20 mOmega cm, precipitates consist of a SiO2/B2O3 composite with a large volume fraction of B(2)0(3) (up to 40% for 8 mOmegacm material). Abstract |
Epitaxial thin film heterostructures of high dielectric PbZr1-xTixO3 (PZT) and La1-xAxMnO3 (A-divalent alkaline earth metals such as Sr (LSMO) and Ca (LCMO)) were grown on SrTiO3 substrates and their structure, temperature dependence of electrical resistivity, and magnetization were investigated as a function of the thickness of the LSMO(LCMO) layer. The microstructures of the samples were analyzed by TEM. By applying an electric field across the PZT layer, we applied a ferrodistortive pressure on the manganite layer and studied the correlations between lattice distortion and electric transport and magnetic properties of the CMR materials. |

Abstract |
A plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) route to Fe2O3-based materials on Al2O3(0001) single crystals at moderate growth temperatures (200-400 degrees C) is reported. The use of the fluorinated Fe(hfa)(2)TMEDA (hfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate; TMEDA = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) molecular precursor in Ar/O-2 plasmas enabled an in situ F-doping of iron oxide matrices, with a fluorine content tunable as a function of the adopted preparative conditions. Variations of the thermal energy supply enabled control of the system phase composition, resulting in gamma-Fe2O3 at 200 degrees C and alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures at higher deposition temperatures. Notably, at 400 degrees C the formation of highly oriented alpha-Fe2O3 nanocolumns characterized by an epitaxial relation with the Al2O3(0001) substrate was observed. Beside fluorine content, phase composition and nano-organization, even the system optical properties and, in particular, energy gap values, could be tailored by proper modifications of processing parameters. |

The use of the fluorinated Fe(hfa)2TMEDA (hfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate; TMEDA = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine) molecular precursor in Ar/O2 plasmas enabled an in situ F-doping of iron oxide matrices, with a fluorine content tunable as a function of the adopted preparative conditions. Variations of the thermal energy supply enabled control of the system phase composition, resulting in γ-Fe2O3 at 200 °C and α-Fe2O3 nanostructures at higher deposition temperatures. Notably, at 400 °C the formation of highly oriented α-Fe2O3 nanocolumns characterized by an epitaxial relation with the Al2O3(0001) substrate was observed. Beside fluorine content, phase composition and nano-organization, even the system optical properties and, in particular, energy gap values, could be tailored by proper modifications of processing parameters. |

Abstract |
Thin films of SrFeO3-x (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5) (SFO) grown on a (LaAlO3)(0.3) (SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)(0.7) (LSAT) substrate by Pulsed laser deposition have been structurally investigated by electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy for different post-deposition oxygen treatments. During the deposition and post-growth oxidation, the oxygen-reduced SFO films accept extra oxygen along the tetrahedral layers to minimize the elastic strain energy. The oxidation process stops at a concentration SFO2.875 and/or SFO2.75 because a zero misfit with the LSAT substrate is reached. A possible growth mechanism and phase transition mechanism are suggested. The non-oxidized films exhibit twin boundaries having a local perovskite-type structure with a nominal composition close to SFO3. |

Abstract |
Earth-abundant and eco-friendly manganese oxides are promising platforms for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. Herein, a versatile and potentially scalable route to gold-decorated manganese oxide-based OER electrocatalysts is reported. In particular, MnxOy(MnO2, Mn2O3) host matrices are grown on conductive glasses by plasma assisted-chemical vapor deposition (PA-CVD), and subsequently functionalized with gold nanoparticles (guest) as OER activators by radio frequency (RF)-sputtering. The final selective obtainment of MnO2- or Mn2O3-based systems is then enabled by annealing under oxidizing or inert atmosphere, respectively. A detailed material characterization evidences the formation of high-purity Mn(x)O(y)dendritic nanostructures with an open morphology and an efficient guest dispersion into the host matrices. The tailoring of Mn(x)O(y)phase composition and host-guest interactions has a remarkable influence on OER activity yielding, for the best performing Au/Mn(2)O(3)system, a current density of approximate to 5 mA cm(-2)at 1.65 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and an overpotential close to 300 mV at 1 mA cm(-2). Such results, comparing favorably with literature data on manganese oxide-based materials, highlight the importance of compositional control, as well as of surface and interface engineering, to develop low-cost and efficient anode nanocatalysts for water splitting applications. |

Abstract |
For many years magnesium oxide (MgO) has been a topic of research as buffer layer for high-temperature superconducting copper oxides and as protective layer in plasma display panels. Since epitaxial growth of MgO is expensive, time consuming and size restricted, other techniques have been developed to grow highly oriented MgO layers for industrial processes. MgO thin films were deposited on a tilted polycrystalline substrate by reactive sputtering using an unbalanced magnetron. By varying different deposition parameters, it is possible to grow biaxially aligned MgO layers, i.e. layers with both out-of-plane and in-plane alignment. XRD measurements were performed to examine the crystallographic structure of the thin film. The preferential out-of-plane orientation is analysed by angular scans using the peak intensity of different reflections while the in-plane orientation is determined by (002) pole figures. Fully [111] out-of-plane oriented layers were grown with a strong in-plane alignment. SEM and TEM measurements were performed to reveal the topographical and cross-sectional microstructure and to investigate the texture evolution of the MgO layers. Evolutionary columnar growth and a roof-tile surface have been observed. |

Abstract |
Post-synthesis hydrothermal treatments have been used to improve the quality of MCM-41 materials. In our latest work, merging of surfactant-containing silica microspheres during the hydrothermal treatments was observed. Mechanistic insights and the different stages that are involved in the merging process can be summarized as follows. First, the surfaces of the starting microspheres open up due to the dissolution of silica. Then the dissolved silica species provide mass source for the formation of particle necks connecting two neighboring microspheres. Gradually, surfaces of the starting microspheres are flattened to meet the needs of further growth of the necks. Finally, some chain-like highly-ordered mesoporous structures up to several micrometers are formed. The observed merging of the surfactant-containing microspheres is a re-assembling process, which is under the control of electrostatic force between the dissolved silica species and the surfactant cations. The occluded surfactant cations in the precursor spheres play important roles in the merging process. |

Abstract |
Using template-containing silica microspheres as a precursor, novel ordered mesoporous silica nanoparticles with a narrow pore size distribution and high crystallinity have been synthesized by various hydrothermal merging processes. Several architectures like chains, dumbbells, triangles, squares and flowers have been discovered. The linking mechanisms of these interacting silica spheres leading to the formation of ordered nano-structures are studied by HRTEM, HAADF-STEM and electron tomography and a plausible model is presented for several merging processes. |

Abstract |
A method to correlate microstructure from cross-section transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations and transport properties of a single well characterized high-T-c artificial grain boundary junction is reported. A YBa2Cu3O7-delta 45 degrees twist junction exhibiting the typical phenomenology of high T-c Josephson weak links was employed. The TEM sample preparation is based on focused ion beam etching and allows to easily localize the electron transparent area on a microbridge. The reported technique opens clear perspectives in the determination of the microstructural origin of variations in Josephson junction properties, such as the spread in I-c and IcRN values and the presence of different transport regimes in nominally identical junctions.
