Abstract: Ni4Ti3 precipitates play an important role in the shape memory and superelastic behaviour of thermo-mechanically treated Ni-Ti material. The 3D morphology and distribution of such precipitates with lenticular shape and rhombohedral atomic structure in the austenitic B2 matrix of a binary Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloy has been elucidated via a slice view procedure in a Dual-Beam FIB/SEM system. With the sequence of cross-section SE images obtained from the SEM, a 3D reconstruction has been achieved after proper alignment and image processing, from which both qualitative and quantitative analysis can be performed. Careful imaging is needed to ensure that all variants of the precipitates are observed with equal probability, regardless sample orientation. Moreover, due to the weak contrast of the precipitates, proper imaging conditions need to be selected to allow for semi-automated image treatment. Finally, a volume ratio of 10.2% for the Ni4Ti3 precipitates could be calculated, summed over all variants, which yields a net composition of Ni50.36Ti49.64 for the matrix, leading to an increase of 113 degrees for the martensitic start temperature Ms. Also, the expected relative orientation of the different variants of the precipitates could be confirmed. In the near future, other quantitative measures on the distribution of the precipitates can be expected.

Abstract: Insulating and metallic stripes above and below the Curie temperature, T-C, respectively, were observed by a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and/or spectroscopy (STS) in A-site ordered and macroscopically strain free epitaxial La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 film grown on MgO substrate. The “insulating” stripes were found to be incommensurable to the lattice and aligned along (110) direction. Metallic stripes were commensurable with periodicity 2a(p)similar to 0.8 nm and aligned parallel to the crystallographic a/b-axis. Formation of these stripes involves competing charge, orbital, and lattice orders and is an outcome of an overlapping of electron wave functions mediated by the local lattice-strain distribution, existed even in A-site ordered film due to the difference in cation radii of La and Ca. Abstract: The atomic scattering amplitudes of the various atoms of the systems Ga1−xInxAs, GaAs1−xNx and InAs1−xNx are calculated using the density functional theory (DFT) approach. The scattering amplitudes of N, Ga, As and In in the model systems are compared with the frequently used Doyle and Turner values. Deviation from the latter values is found for small scattering vectors (s<0.3Å−1) and for these scattering vectors dependence on the orientation of the scattering vector and the chemical environment is reported. We suggest a parametrization of these modified scattering amplitudes (MASAs) for small scattering vectors (s<1.0Å−1). The MASAs are exploited within zero pressure classical Metropolis Monte Carlo (MC), finite temperature calculations to investigate the effect of quantum well size on the electron {002} structure factor (SF) of Ga1−xInxAs quantum wells.

Abstract: A novel infrared absorption method has been developed to measure [he interstitial oxygen concentration in highly doped silicon. Thin samples of the order of 10-30 mu m are prepared in an essentially stress-free state without changing the state of the crystal. The oxygen concentration is then determined by measuring the height of the 1136-cm(-1) absorption peak due to interstitial oxygen at 5.5 K. The obtained results on as-grown samples are compared with those from gas fusion analysis. The precipitated oxygen concentration in annealed samples is also determined with the new method. It will be shown that the interstitial oxygen concentration in highly doped silicon can be determined with high accuracy and down to concentrations of 10(17) cm(-3). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The present paper discusses some important aspects of precipitation and ordering in alloy systems that show a martensitic transformation and can or are used as shape memory or superelastic metallic systems. The precipitates are investigated by a variety of conventional and advanced electron microscopy techniques, including atomic resolution, 3D slice-and-view, energy loss spectroscopy etc. Depending on the system, such secondary phases can decrease the probability of a displacive transformation by changing the phase stability in the system, such as in the case of NiAl or NiTiPd, or can mechanically hinder the passage of the transformation interface, as in NiTiNb. On the other hand, properly controlling the nucleation and growth of some precipitates can strongly improve the properties of some types of materials, as is the case for the well-known Ni4Ti3 precipitates.

Abstract: Lattice deformations and concentration gradients surrounding Ni4Ti3 precipitates grown by appropriate annealing in a Ni51Ti49 B2 austenite matrix are determined by a combination of TEM techniques. Quantitative Fourier analysis of HRTEM images reveals a deformed nanoscale region with lattice deformations up to 2% while EELS and EDX indicate a Ni depleted zone up to 150 nm away from the matrix-precipitate interface.

Abstract: The concept of resolution in high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) is the power to resolve neighboring atoms. Since the resolution is related to the width of the point spread function of the microscope, it could in principle be determined from the image of a point object. However, in electron microscopy there are no ideal point objects. The smallest object is an individual atom. If the width of an atom is much smaller than the resolution of the microscope, this atom can still be considered as a point object. As the resolution of the microscope enters the sub-Å regime, information about the microscope is strongly entangled with the information about the atoms in HREM images. Therefore, we need to find an alternative method to determine the resolution in an object-independent way. In this work we propose to use the image wave of a crystalline object in zone axis orientation. Under this condition, the atoms of a column act as small lenses so that the electron beam channels through the atom column periodically. Because of this focusing, the image wave of the column can be much more peaked than the constituting atoms and can thus be a much more sensitive probe to measure the resolution. Our approach is to use the peakiness of the image wave of the atom column to determine the resolution. We will show that the resolution can be directly linked to the total curvature of the atom column wave. Moreover, we can then directly obtain the resolution of the microscope given that the contribution from the object is known, which is related to the bounding energy of the atom. The method is applied on an experimental CaTiO3 image wave.

Abstract: We evaluate the transmission through magnetic barriers in graphene-based nanostructures. Several particular cases are considered: a magnetic step, single and double barriers, delta -function barriers as well as barrier structures with inhomogeneous magnetic field profiles but with average magnetic field equal to zero. The transmission exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the incident wave vector. In general the resonant structure of the transmission is significantly more pronounced for (Dirac) electrons with linear spectrum compared to that for electrons with a parabolic one.

Abstract: Control of the texture and the biaxial alignment of sputter deposited films has provoked a great deal of interest due to its technological importance. indeed, many physical properties of thin films are influenced by the biaxial alignment. In this context, extensive research has been established to understand the growth mechanism of biaxially aligned Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) as a buffer layer for high temperature superconducting copper oxides. In this work, the growth mechanism in general and the mechanism responsible of the biaxial alignment in detail were investigated for thin films of YSZ and TiN deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering using non-aligned polycrystalline stainless steel substrates. The mechanism responsible for the preferential out-of-plane alignment has been investigated by performing depositions on a non-tilted substrate. However, to study the in-plane alignment a tilted substrate was used. The microstructure of the deposited layers was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The crystallographic alignment has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (angular scans and pole figures) and by Selective Area Diffraction (SAD). It was observed that the deposited layers show a zone T or zone II structure and the layers with a zone T structure consist of faceted grains. There seems to be a correlation between the crystal habit of these faceted grains and the measured biaxial alignment. A model for the preferential out-of-plane orientation, the in-plane alignment and the correlation between the microstructure and the biaxial alignment is proposed.

Abstract: Chimera state is a recently discovered dynamical phenomenon in arrays of nonlocally coupled oscillators, that displays a self-organized spatial pattern of coexisting coherence and incoherence. We discuss the appearance of the chimera states in networks of phase oscillators with attractive and with repulsive interactions, i.e. when the coupling respectively favors synchronization or works against it. By systematically analyzing the dependence of the spatiotemporal dynamics on the level of coupling attractivity/repulsivity and the range of coupling, we uncover that different types of chimera states exist in wide domains of the parameter space as cascades of the states with increasing number of intervals of irregularity, so-called chimera's heads. We report three scenarios for the chimera birth: (1) via saddle-node bifurcation on a resonant invariant circle, also known as SNIC or SNIPER, (2) via blue-sky catastrophe, when two periodic orbits, stable and saddle, approach each other creating a saddle-node periodic orbit, and (3) via homoclinic transition with complex multistable dynamics including an “eight-like” limit cycle resulting eventually in a chimera state.

Abstract: The mechanism allowing the transition from a two-dimensional strained layer of CdSe on ZnSe to self-assembled islands induced by the use of amorphous selenium is still not fully understood. For a better understanding, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies were performed on CdSe films with a thickness close to that for quantum dot formation. Below this thickness, the sample surface results in undulations along the [110] crystal direction, while few quantum dots are situated in the wave valleys. Plan view transmission electron microscopy studies reveal a strong anisotropy of the islands and show that the Se desorption conditions are crucial. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: With further down-scaling below 0.25mum technologies, CoSi2 is replacing TiSi2 because of its superior formation chemistry on narrow lines and favourable stress behaviour. Shallow trench isolation (STI) is used as the isolation technique in these technologies. In this study, convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) measurements and finite element modelling (FEM) are performed to evaluate the local stress components in the silicon substrate, induced in STI structures with a 45 nm or a 85 nm CoSi2 silicidation. High compressive stresses in the active area and tensile stress around the trench corners are observed.
