Abstract: The deviation effect of spinor mode from the single-mode for a spin-1 Bose gas of trapped atoms is studied beyond the mean field theory. Based on the effective Hamiltonian with nondegenerated level of the collective spin states, the splitting level of the system energy due to the deviation effect has been calculated. For the large condensates of (87)Rb and (23)Na with atom number N > 10(5), the splitting fraction of the energy, arising from the magnetization exhibited by the trapped Bose gas, is found to have a typical order of (10(-4) similar to 10(-8)), decreasing as N(-2) for (87)Rb and increasing as -N(-2) for 23 Na, respectively.

Abstract: We present results of Monte Carlo simulations of chains of C-60 and chains of C-70 molecules encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT). We observe the changes in the configuration of the fullerene molecules when varying tube radius and temperature. In particular, the evolution of the pair correlation functions reveal a transition from linear harmonic chain behavior to a hard-sphere liquid upon heating, demonstrating the possibility of tuning properties of C-60- and C-70@SWCNT peapods with radius and temperature.

Abstract: It is well-known that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory is a reliable and powerful theoretical tool to investigate the magnetic response of a superconducting state. However, in its standard form, this approach is not applicable to atomically uniform nano-thin superconducting films which are effective multiband superconductors. Abstract: We present an exact diagonalization study of negatively charged excitonic trions in two vertically coupled parabolic quantum dots. The electrons and the hole are confined to different dots. We obtain the energy spectra as a function of inter-dot separation and external magnetic field strength and identify different ground-state angular momentum transitions which are accompanied by abrupt charge redistributions in the dots. Abstract: A theoretical model is presented for the description of the metal-insulator transition which accompanies the structural phase transition at T approximate to 50 K in polymerized KC60. The model involves orientational charge density waves (along the C-60 polymer chains) which were introduced previously for a description of the structural phase transition. A satisfactory qualitative and quantitative understanding is obtained when the three-dimensionality of the crystal and the presence of the K+ counterions is properly taken into account.

Abstract: Defects on hollow silica spheres synthesized in a tetraethylorthosilicate-octylamine-HCl-H2O system were recorded by scanning microscope. Based on the results, influences of synthesis composition on the formation of these defects are discussed. It is evidenced that products prepared with different octylamine-to-tetraethylorthosilicate ratios may have surface depressions, cracks and non-hollow microspheres. However, by changing water and acid additions, these defects could be reduced or eliminated. Generally, samples synthesized with a large octylamine addition commonly exhibit surface depressions. A small octylamine or a large water addition benefits the formation of solid silica microspheres among the product. Acid, although is not indispensable for the formation of hollow spheres, helps to eliminate or reduce depressions on the hollow shells. It is explained that the added acid gives rise to a relative localized fast hydrolysis versus condensation, facilitating an easy mobility of hydrolyzed silica species, and consequently the shell surface is smoothened.

Abstract: When a condensate is sheared by imparting a velocity to a part of the condensate, phase singularities must appear at the interface between the region that is still at rest and the region that has acquired a velocity. For helium, Feynman argued that these phase singularies will arrange themselves in the form of a vortex row. BoseEinstein condensates of ultracold atomic gases differ from helium in that the healing length is generally much larger and is, in fact, tunable. Another difference is that multicomponent condensates can be created, where the two components forming the mixture are usually two different hyperfine states of the condensed atoms. These two components can be manipulated separately and can be interconverted. In this contribution, we investigate how these additional degrees of freedom, available in quantum gases, change what happens in sheared condensates. In particular, we consider skyrmion rows as an alternative to vortex rows, and we also consider phase slip lines filled with the second, unmoving component, in a condensate mixture. We show that depending on the ratios of the interaction strengths between the components, and depending on the shear velocity, skyrmion rows and phase slip lines can become lower in energy than vortex rows, and hence should be observable in quantum gases. Moreover, we find that the velocity field affects the stability region of the condensate with respect to phase separation.

Abstract: We study the effect of electron confinement on the superconducting-to-normal phase transition driven by a magnetic field and/or on the current-carrying state of the superconducting condensate in nanowires. Our investigation is based on a self-consistent numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We show that in a parallel magnetic field and/or in the presence of supercurrent the transition from superconducting to normal phase occurs as a cascade of discontinuous jumps in the superconducting order parameter for diameters D < 10 divided by 15 nm at T = 0. The critical magnetic field exhibits quantum-size oscillations with pronounced resonant enhancements.
