“Energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy: an overview”. Verbeeck J, van Dyck D, Van Tendeloo G, Spectrochimica acta: part B : atomic spectroscopy 59, 1529 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.sab.2004.03.020
Abstract: This paper aims to give an overview of the technique of energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM). It explains the basic principles of the technique and points to the relevant literature for more detailed issues. Experimental examples are given to show the power of EFTEM to study the chemical composition of nanoscale samples in materials science. Advanced EFTEM applications like imaging spectroscopy and EFTEM tomography are briefly discussed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Welding nanocrystals for assembly: The welding of Au domains grown on the tips of shape-controlled cadmium chalcogenide colloidal nanocrystals is used as a strategy for their assembly. Iodine-induced coagulation of selectively grown Au domains leads to assemblies such as flowerlike structures based on bullet-shaped nanocrystals, linear and cross-linked chains of nanorods, and globular networks with tetrapods as building blocks.

Abstract: The effect of the oxygen plasma treatment on the electronic states of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is analyzed by X-ray photoemission measurements (XPS) and UPS, both using synchrotron radiation. It is found that the plasma treatment effectively grafts oxygen at the CNT-surface. Thereafter, the interaction between evaporated Pd and pristine or oxygen plasma-treated MWCNTs is investigated. Pd is found to nucleate at defective sites, whether initially present or introduced by oxygen plasma treatment. The plasma treatment induced a uniform dispersion of Pd clusters at the CNT-surface. The absence of additional features in the Pd 3d and C I s core levels spectra testifies that no Pd-C bond is formed. The shift of the Pd 3d core level towards high-binding energy for the smallest clusters is attributed to the Coulomb energy of the charged final state. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

“Electronic reconstruction at n-type SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interfaces”. Verbeeck J, Bals S, Lamoen D, Luysberg M, Huijben M, Rijnders G, Brinkman A, Hilgenkamp H, Blank DHA, Van Tendeloo G, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 81, 085113 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.81.085113
Abstract: Electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used to investigate single layers of LaAlO3 grown on SrTiO3 having an n-type interface as well as multilayers of LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 in which both n- and p-type interfaces occur. Only minor changes in Ti valence at the n-type interface are observed. This finding seems to contradict earlier experiments for other SrTiO3/LaAlO3 systems where large deviations in Ti valency were assumed to be responsible for the conductivity of these interfaces. Ab initio calculations have been carried out in order to interpret our EELS results. Using the concept of Bader charges, it is demonstrated that the so-called polar discontinuity is mainly resolved by lattice distortions and to a far lesser extent by changes in valency for both single layer and multilayer geometries.

Abstract: The fluorination of La2CuO4 can lead to different oxyfluoride compounds depending on the TF2 temperature of the fluorine gas treatment. When 150-degrees-C T(F2) less-than-or-equal-to 200-degrees-c less-than-or-equal-to 200-degrees-C a superconducting material is obtained. Previous neutron diffraction experiments as well as the EXAFS measurements at the La L(III) edge indicate that extra anions lie in an interstitial site between the two (LaO) layers. Electron diffraction patterns clearly show the existence of an incommensurate modulation due to the presence of shear planes. A second phase is also pointed out which can be obtained as a major component when the fluorination temperature is raised to 230-degrees-C. This phase which is not a superconductor crystallizes with the monoclinic symmetry.

Abstract: An epitaxially grown heterostructure consisting of alternating layers of LaMnO3 (8 unit cells) and SrMnO3 (4 unit cells) on a SrTiO3 substrate has been studied by a combination of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) on an atomic scale. Excitation edges of all elements are captured with subnanometer spatial accuracy, and parametrized to obtain chemical profiles. The fine-edge structure of O K and Mn L-2,L-3 edges are interpreted as signatures of the local electronic structure and show a spatial modulation of the concentration of holes with O 2p character. The chemical concentration is found to be different for the bottom and top interface of a SrMnO3 layer. HRTEM complements the EELS results and confirms the asymmetry of the interfaces. Abstract: The atomic structure of single-wall carbon nanotube bundles produced by three different techniques has been characterized by electron diffraction and microscopy. Small bundles produced by Catalytical Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD) exhibit only one or two tube chiralities within a single bundle while bundles produced by arc-discharge or laser-ablation exhibit more chiralities. A detailed analysis of the central line of diffraction is also presented. The CCVD nanotubes present more intense spots around 1.7 Angstrom(-1) < k < 2Angstrom(-1) (k is the momentum transfer) compared to what is observed for nanotubes produced by other methods. Amongst the possible explanation for such an anomaly, we put forward that in this range of momentum transfer, the relative tube orientations and translations are important for what concerns the interpretation of the diffraction peaks intensities.
