“Simulation of poly-capillary lenses for coherent and partially coherent x-rays”. Vincze L, Kukhlevsky SV, Janssens K, Proceedings of the Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers
T2 –, Conference on Advances in Computational Methods for X-Ray and Neutron, Optics, AUG 03-05, 2004, Denver, CO , 81 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1117/12.560740
Abstract: The intensity distributions of the coherent and partially coherent x-rays passed through a poly-capillary lens have been computed at the focal plane. The computations showed that at the appropriate experimental conditions the interference phenomenon does affect the intensity distribution. In the case of the coherent input radiation with the photon energy of 0.1 keV, the interference fringes were observed, while the non-coherent x-ray radiation produced no interference-like intensity distributions.

“Oxidation states of uranium in depleted uranium particles from Kuwait”. Salbu B, Janssens K, Lind OC, Proost K, Gijsels L, Danesi PR, Journal of environmental radioactivity 78, 125 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JENVAD.2004.04.001
Abstract: The oxidation states of uranium in depleted uranium (DU) particles were determined by synchrotron radiation based mu-XANES, applied to individual particles isolated from selected samples collected at different sites in Kuwait. Based on scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalysis prior to mu-XANES, DU particles ranging from sub-microns to several hundred micrometers were observed. The.median particle size depended on sources and sampling sites; small-sized particles (median 13 mum) were identified in swipes taken from the inside of DU penetrators holes in tanks and in sandy soil collected below DU penetrators, while larger particles (median 44 mum) were associated with fire in a DU ammunition storage facility. Furthermore, the U-236/U-235 ratios obtained from accelerator mass spectrometry demonstrated that uranium in the DU particles originated from reprocessed fuel (about 10(-2) in DU from the ammunition facility, about 10(-3) for DU in swipes). Compared to well-defined standards, all investigated DU particles were oxidized. Uranium particles collected from swipes were characterized as UO2, U3O8 or a mixture of these oxidized forms, similar to that observed in DU affected areas in Kosovo. Uranium particles formed during fire in the DU ammunition facility were, however, present as oxidation state +5 and +6, with XANES spectra similar to solid uranyl standards. Environmental or health impact assessments for areas affected by DU munitions should therefore take into account the presence of respiratory UO2, U3O8 and even UO3 particles, their corresponding weathering rates and the subsequent mobilisation of U from oxidized DU particles. “Determination of localized Fe2+/Fe3+ ratios in inks of historic documents by means of \mu-XANES”. Abstract: An important part of the European cultural heritage is composed of hand-written documents. Many of these documents were drawn up with iron-gall ink. This type of ink present a serious conservation problem, as it slowly oxidizes ('burns') the paper it is written on, thereby gradually disintegrating the historic document. Acid hydrolysis of the cellulose and/or the oxidation of organic compounds promoted by radical intermediates that are formed due to the presence of Fe2+ ions are considered to be the cause of the disintegration. mu-XANES measurements were performed with a lateral resolution of 30-50 mum in order to determine the local Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio in 19th C. documents from the Austrian National Archives and fragments of 16th C documents from the Polish National Library. In the 19th C documents, no significant amount of Fe2+ was detected. On the other hand, in the 16th C fragments, significant amounts of Fe2+ and appreciable differences in distribution of Fe2+ and Fe3+ within individual letters/ink stains were observed. Abstract: Focused narrow-band beam of the synchrotron radiation was used for in-depth analysis of historic and modern paint layers. The fluorescent radiation induced by 21 keV impact radiation was detected by a Si(Li) detector equipped with a polycapillary X-ray lens in con-focal geometry. Scanning of the sample was performed by a motorized xyz stage. Space resolution of 30 ìm was achieved. The procedure of evaluation of concentrations was based on the independent parameter method and included absorption of radiation in the outer layers and secondary fluorescence enhancement induced by hard X-rays of the same and neighboring layers.

“Chemical composition and deterioration of glass excavated in the 15th-16th century fishermen town of Raversijde (Belgium)”. Schalm O, Caluwé, D, Wouters H, Janssens K, Verhaeghe F, Pieters M, Spectrochimica acta: part A: molecular and biomolecular spectroscopy 59, 1647 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.SAB.2004.07.012
Abstract: The chemical composition, as determined by electron probe X-ray microanalysis of a series of ca. 100 archaeological glass fragments, excavated at the Raversijde site (Belgium) is discussed. In the 15th-16th century, Raversijde was a flourishing fishermen town located on the shore of the North Sea, close to the city of Ostend. As a consequence of several battles that were fought in its vicinity, the site was abandoned in the 16th century and was not occupied since then. It is one of the rare archaeological sites in Europe that contains a significant amount of information on the daily life inside a small but affluent medieval community. A comparison of the chemical composition of fragments of vessels and window glass encountered in Raversijde to those found in urban centres in Belgium and to literature date on German and French archaeological finds shows that glass made with wood ash dominates. Usually, it concerns artifacts with a predominantly utilitarian use. A few objects made with sodic (i.e., Na-rich) glass were also encountered, likely to have been imported from Venice during the 15th century or in later periods from an urban centre such as Antwerp, where Facon-de-Venice glass manufacturing activities were established near the start of the 16th century. “Theoretical model for the structural phase transition and the metal-insulator transition in polymerized KC60”. Verberck B, Nikolaev AV, Michel KH, Fullerenes, nanotubes, and carbon nanostructures

Abstract: The recently discovered structural phase transition in Polymerized KC60 at about 50K leads to a doubling of the unit cell volume and is accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. Here, we show that the ((a) over right arrow + (c) over right arrow, (b) over right arrow, (a) over right arrow – (c) over right arrow) superstructure results from orientational charge density waves along the polymer chains and correlated displacements of the K+ ions. The presented model can also account for the metal-insulator transition. The effect is specific for the space group Pmnn of KC60 and is absent in both Rb- and CsC60 (space group 12/m), in agreement with the present experimental knowledge of these compounds.

“Terahertz radiation from oscillating electrons in laser-induced wake fields”. Cao L-H, Yu W, Xu H, Zheng C-Y, Liu Z-J, Li B, Bogaerts A, Physical review : E : statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics 70, 046408 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.70.046408
Abstract: Strong terahertz (1THz=1012Hz) radiation can be generated by the electron oscillation in fs-laser-induced wake fields. The interaction of a fs-laser pulse with a low-density plasma layer is studied in detail using numerical simulations. The spatial distribution and temporal evolution of terahertz electron current developed in a low-density plasma layer are presented, which enables us to calculate the intensity distribution of THz radiation. It is shown that laser and plasma parameters, such as laser intensity, pulse width, and background plasma density, are of key importance to the process. The optimum condition for wake-field excitation and terahertz emission is discussed upon the simulation results. Radiation peaked at 6.4 THz, with 900 fs duration and 9% bandwidth, can be generated in a plasma of density 5×1017cm−3. It turns out that the maximum radiation intensity scales as n03a04 when wake field is resonantly excited, where n0 and a0 are, respectively, the plasma density and the normalized field amplitude of the laser pulse.
