Abstract: We present a detailed theoretical study of the optoelectronic properties of a Na3Bi based three-dimensional Dirac electronic system (3DDES). The optical conductivity is evaluated using the energy-balance equation derived from a Boltzmann equation, where the electron Hamiltonian is taken from a simplified k . p approach. We find that for short-wavelength irradiation, the optical absorption in Na3Bi is mainly due to inter-band electronic transitions. In contrast to the universal optical conductance observed for graphene, the optical conductivity for Na3Bi based 3DDES depends on the radiation frequency but not on temperature, carrier density, and electronic relaxation time. In the radiation wavelength regime of about 5 mu m, < lambda < 200 mu m, an optical absorption window is found. This is similar to what is observed in graphene. The position and width of the absorption window depend on the direction of the light polarization and sensitively on temperature, carrier density, and electronic relaxation time. Particularly, we demonstrate that the inter-band optical absorption channel can be switched on and off by applying the gate voltage. This implies that similar to graphene, Na3Bi based 3DDES can also be applied in infrared electro-optical modulators. Our theoretical findings are helpful in gaining an in-depth understanding of the basic optoelectronic properties of recently discovered 3DDESs.

Abstract: Starting from logarithmic, sinusoidal and power spirals, it is shown how these spirals are connected directly with Chebyshev polynomials, Lamé curves, with allometry and Antonelli-metrics in Finsler geometry. Curvature is a crucial concept in geometry both for closed curves and equiangular spirals, and allowed Dillen to give a general definition of spirals. Many natural shapes can be described as a combination of one of two basic shapes in nature—circle and spiral—with Gielis transformations. Using this idea, shape description itself is used to develop a novel approach to anisotropic curvature in nature. Various examples are discussed, including fusion in flowers and its connection to the recently described pseudo-Chebyshev functions.

Abstract: In the present work, kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) technique has been used to study the CZTSe/CuxSe bilayer interface prepared by multi-step deposition and selenization process of metal precursors. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the bilayer configuration of the CZTSe/CuxSe sample. Two configuration modes (surface mode and junction mode) in KPFM have been employed in order to measure the junction voltage under illumination conditions. The results show that CZTSe/CuxSe has small junction voltage of similar to 21 mV and the presence of CuxSe secondary phase in the CZTSe grain boundaries changes the workfunction of the local grain boundaries region. The negligible photovoltage difference between grain and grain boundaries in photovoltage image indicates that CuxSe phase deteriorates the higher photovoltage at grain boundaries normally observed in CZTSe based device. These results can be important for understanding the role of secondary phases in CZTSe based junction devices.

Abstract: Vincent van Gogh used fugitive red lake pigments that have faded in some paintings. Mapping their distribution is key to understanding how his paintings have changed with time. While red lake pigments can be identified from microsamples, in situ identification and mapping remain challenging. This paper explores the ability of molecular fluorescence imaging spectroscopy to identify and, more importantly, map residual non-degraded red lakes. The high sensitivity of this method enabled identification of the emission spectra of eosin (tetrabromine fluorescein) lake mixed with lead or zinc white at lower concentrations than elemental X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy used on account of bromine. The molecular fluorescence mapping of residual eosin and two carmine red lakes in van Gogh's The Olive Orchard is demonstrated and compared with XRF imaging spectroscopy. The red lakes are consistent with the composition of paint tubes known to have been used by van Gogh.

Abstract: In this work, we investigated systematically the electronic and optical properties of B doped C3N monolayers as well as B and N doped graphene bilayers (BN-Gr@2L). We found that the doping of B atoms leads to an enlarged band gap of the C3N monolayer and when the dopant concentration reaches 12.5%, an indirect-to-direct band gap switching occurs. In addition, with co-doping of B and N atoms on the graphene monolayer in the hexagonal configuration, an electronic transition from semi-metal to semiconductor occurs. Our optical results for B-C3N show a broad absorption spectrum in a wide visible range starting from 400 nm to 1000 nm with strong absorption intensity, making it a suitable candidate for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. Interestingly, a transition from semi-metal to semiconductor emerges in the graphene monolayer with doping of B and N atoms. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that the in-plane strain and out-of-plane strain (pressure) can modulate the band gap of the BN-Gr@2L. The controllable electronic properties and optical features of the doped graphene bilayer by strain engineering may facilitate their practical performance for various applications in future.

Abstract: Implementation of mainstream partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) can lead to more sustainable and cost-effective sewage treatment. For mainstream PN/A reactor, an integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) was operated (26 °C). The effects of floccular aerobic sludge retention time (AerSRT_floc), a novel aeration strategy, and N-loading rate were tested to optimize the operational strategy. The best performance was observed with a low, but sufficient AerSRTfloc (~7d) and continuous aeration with two alternating dissolved oxygen setpoints: 10 min at 0.07–0.13 mg O2 L−1 and 5 min at 0.27–0.43 mg O2 L−1. Nitrogen removal rates were 122 ± 23 mg N L−1 d−1, and removal efficiencies 73 ± 13%. These conditions enabled flocs to act as nitrite sources while the carriers were nitrite sinks, with low abundance of nitrite oxidizing bacteria. The operational strategies in the source-sink framework can serve as a guideline for successful operation of mainstream PN/A reactors.

Abstract: The present study describes a multivariate strategy that can be used for automatic on-site processing of reflection mode macro FTIR mapping (MA-rFTIR) data obtained during investigation of artworks. The chemometric strategy is based on the integration of principal component analysis (PCA) with a clustering approach in the space subtended by the three lowest-order principal components and allows to automatically identify the regions of interest (ROIs) of the area scanned and to extract the average FTIR spectra related to each ROI. Thanks to the automatic data management, in-field HSI (hyperspectral imaging)-based analyses may be performed even by staff lacking specific advanced chemometric expertise, as it is sometimes the case for conservation scientists or conservators with a scientific background. MA-rFTIR was only recently introduced in the conservation field and, in this work the technique was employed to characterize the surface of metallic artefacts. The analytical protocol was employed as part of a rapid procedure to evaluate the conservation state and the performance of cleaning methods on bronze objects. Both activities are commonly part of restoration campaigns of bronzes and require an on-site analytical procedure for efficient and effective diagnosis. The performance of the method was first evaluated on aged standard samples (bronzes with a layer of green basic copper hydroxysulphate, treated with different organic coatings) and then scrutinized in situ on areas of the 16th century Neptune fountain statue (Piazza del Nettuno, Bologna, Italy) by Gianbologna.

Abstract: A systematic investigation of voltage effect on the plasma parameters, especially the species densities and chemical reaction mechanisms, in the capacitive N-2 discharges is performed by employing a two-dimensional self-consistent fluid model. The validity of the numerical model is first demonstrated by the qualitative agreement of the calculated and experimental results. Then, the densities, production mechanisms, and loss mechanisms of species from simulation are examined at various voltages. It is found that all the species densities increase monotonically with the voltage, whereas their spatial profiles at lower voltages are quite different from those at higher voltages. The electrons and Nthorn 2 ions are mainly generated by the electron impact ionization of N-2 gas, while the Nthorn ions, whose density is one or two orders of magnitude lower, are mostly formed by the ionization of N atoms. The electron impact dissociation of N-2 gas dominates the generation of N atoms, which are mostly destroyed for the Nthorn ion production. As for the excited N-2 levels, the level conversion processes play a very important role in their production and depletion mechanisms, except for the electron impact excitation of the ground state N-2 molecules. Abstract: In this work, by performing first-principles calculations, we explore the effects of various atom impurities on the electronic and magnetic properties of single layers of C(6)N(6)and C6N8. Our results indicate that atom doping may significantly modify the electronic properties. Surprisingly, doping Cr into a holey site of C(6)N(6)monolayer was found to exhibit a narrow band gap of 125 meV upon compression strain, considering the spin-orbit coupling effect. Also, a C atom doped in C(6)N(8)monolayer shows semi-metal nature under compression strains larger than -2%. Our results propose that Mg or Ca doped into strained C(6)N(6)may exhibit small band gaps in the range of 10-30 meV. In addition, a magnetic-to-nonmagnetic phase transition can occur under large tensile strains in the Ca doped C(6)N(8)monolayer. Our results highlight the electronic properties and magnetism of C(6)N(6)and C(6)N(8)monolayers. Our results show that the electronic properties can be effectively modified by atom doping and mechanical strain, thereby offering new possibilities to tailor the electronic and magnetic properties of C(6)N(6)and C(6)N(8)carbon nitride monolayers.

Abstract: Control of interactions between nanomaterials and cells remains a biomedical challenge. A strategy is proposed to modulate the intralysosomal distribution of nanoparticles through the design of 3D suprastructures built by hydrophilic nanocrystals (NCs) coated with alkyl chains. The intracellular fate of two water-dispersible architectures of self-assembled hydrophobic magnetic NCs: hollow deformable shells (colloidosomes) or solid fcc particles (supraballs) is compared. These two self-assemblies display increased cellular uptake by tumor cells compared to dispersions of the water-soluble NC building blocks. Moreover, the self-assembly structures increase the NCs density in lysosomes and close to the lysosome membrane. Importantly, the structural organization of NCs in colloidosomes and supraballs are maintained in lysosomes up to 8 days after internalization, whereas initially dispersed hydrophilic NCs are randomly aggregated. Supraballs and colloidosomes are differently sensed by cells due to their different architectures and mechanical properties. Flexible and soft colloidosomes deform and spread along the biological membranes. In contrast, the more rigid supraballs remain spherical. By subjecting the internalized suprastructures to a magnetic field, they both align and form long chains. Overall, it is highlighted that the mechanical and topological properties of the self-assemblies direct their intracellular fate allowing the control intralysosomal density, ordering, and localization of NCs.

Abstract: Two-dimensional graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures have received considerable interest because of their intriguing characteristics compared with the constituent single-layer two-dimensional materials. Here, we investigate the interfacial characteristics, Schottky contact, and optical performance of graphene/Ga2SSe van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure using first-principles calculations. The effects of stacking patterns, electric gating, and interlayer coupling on the interfacial properties of graphene/Ga2SSe heterostructures are also examined. Our results demonstrate that the Dirac cone of graphene is well preserved at the F point in all stacking patterns due to the weak vdW interactions, which keep the heterostructures feasible such that they can be obtained in further experiments. Moreover, depending on the stacking patterns, a small band gap of about 13-17 meV opens in graphene and has a high carrier mobility, indicating that the graphene/Ga2SSe heterostructures are potential candidates for future high-speed nanoelectronic applications. In the ground state, the graphene/Ga2SSe heterostructures form an n-type Schottky contact. The transformation from an n-type to a p-type Schottky contact or to an Ohmic contact can be forced by electric gating or by varying the interlayer coupling. Our findings could provide physical guidance for designing controllable Schottky nanodevices with high electronic and optical performances.

Abstract: The photoelectrochemical quantification of phenolic compounds such as hydroquinone (HQ) and 4-aminophenol (4-AP) is accomplished by integrating a photoelectrochemical cell into a flow injection analysis (FIA) setup. It is a well-known fact that during the electroanalysis of phenolic compounds, the electrode surface is susceptible to poisoning. However, electrode fouling can be reduced significantly by using the FIA system with periodic washing of the electrode. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are generated on the surface of TiO2 under UV light, can oxidize phenolic compounds such as 4-AP. The oxidized form of 4-AP is reduced back at the electrode surface, generating a measurable signal proportional to its concentration. The factors influencing the perfor-mance of the sensor, such as flow rate, applied potential for back reduction and pH, are investigated in detail. In the concentration range 0.0125-1.0 mu M, a linear correlation between the photocurrent and the concentration of 4-AP was observed with a sensitivity of 0.6 A M-1 cm(-2) and a limit of detection of 18 nM. A straightforward analytical methodology for the on-site, highly sensitive and low-cost quantification of phenolic compounds is presented, based on the use of TiO2 in a photoelectrochemical flow cell.

Abstract: We have studied the transport properties of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 (LTO/STO) heterostructures. In spite of 2D growth observed in reflection high energy electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy images revealed that the samples tend to amorphize. Still, we observe that the structures are conducting, and some of them exhibit high conductance and/or superconductivity. We established that conductivity arises mainly on the STO side of the interface, and shows all the signs of the two-dimensional electron gas usually observed at interfaces between STO and LTO or LaAlO3, including the presence of two electron bands and tunability with a gate voltage. Analysis of magnetoresistance (MR) and superconductivity indicates the presence of spatial fluctuations of the electronic properties in our samples. That can explain the observed quasilinear out-of-plane MR, as well as various features of the in-plane MR and the observed superconductivity.

Abstract: High rate activated sludge (HRAS) processes have a high potential for carbon and energy recovery from sewage, yet they suffer frequently from poor settleability due to flocculation issues. The process of flocculation is generally optimized using jar tests. However, detailed jar hydrodynamics are often unknown, and average quantities are used, which can significantly differ from the local conditions. The presented work combined experimental and numerical data to investigate the impact of local hydrodynamics on HRAS flocculation for two different jar test configurations (i.e., radial vs. axial impellers at different impeller velocities) and compared the hydrodynamics in these jar tests to those in a representative section of a full scale reactor using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The analysis showed that the flocculation performance was highly influenced by the impeller type and its speed. The axial impeller appeared to be more appropriate for floc formation over a range of impeller speeds as it produced a more homogeneous distribution of local velocity gradients compared to the radial impeller. In contrast, the radial impeller generated larger volumes (%) of high velocity gradients in which floc breakage may occur. Comparison to local velocity gradients in a full scale system showed that also here, high velocity gradients occurred in the region around the impeller, which might significantly hamper the HRAS flocculation process. As such, this study showed that a model based approach was necessary to translate lab scale results to full scale. These new insights can help improve future experimental setups and reactor design for improved HRAS flocculation.
