Abstract: Nanocrystalline Pd films were produced by electron-beam evaporation and sputter deposition. The electron-beam-evaporated films reveal randomly oriented nanograins with a relatively high density of growth twins, unexpected in view of the high stacking fault energy of Pd. In contrast, sputter-deposited films show a clear 〈1 1 1〉 crystallographic textured nanostructure without twins. These results provide insightful information to guide the generation of microstructures with enhanced strength/ductility balance in high stacking fault energy nanocrystalline metallic thin films.

Abstract: The quartic force field of thioformaldehyde has been calculated ab initio using large basis sets and augmented coupled cluster methods. Calculated fundamentals are in excellent agreement with experiment, as is the most important Coriolis coupling constant. Computed values for the anharmonicity, rovibrational coupling, and centrifugal distortion constants of the four isotopomers (H2CS)-S-32, (H2CS)-S-34, (HDCS)-S-32, and (D2CS)-S-32 have been reported. Predictions have been made for all vibrational transitions from the ground state to excited states with at most two quanta for these isotopomers, both using second-order perturbation theory corrected for Darling-Dennison resonance and using vibrational SCF-CI calculations. For (D2CS)-S-32, perturbation theory performs quite well; for the other isotopomers, performance is poorer for states involving excitation of the out-of-plane bend and, for the (H2CS)-S-32 and (H2CS)-S-34 isotopomers, also for the antisymmetric bend that is in severe Coriolis resonance with it. Abstract: The cyclotron resonance (CR) absorption spectrum is calculated for a II-VI parabolic quantum dot (QD) containing few electrons and a single magnetic dopant (Mn(2+)). We find that Kohn's theorem no longer holds for this system and that the CR spectrum depends on the number of electrons inside the QD. The electron-Mn-ion interaction strength can be tuned for example by the magnetic field and by moving the Mn-ion to different positions inside the QD. We demonstrate that due to the presence of the Mn-ion the relative motion of the electrons couple with their center-of-mass motion through the electron-Mn-ion spin-spin exchange term resulting in an electron-electron interaction dependence of the magneto-optical absorption spectrum. At the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition we observe significant discontinuities in the CR lines.

Abstract: Nanoconfined magnesium hydride can be simultaneously protected and thermodynamically destabilized when interfaced with materials such as Ti and Fe. We study the hydrogenation of thin layers of Mg (<14 nm) nanoconfined in one dimension within thin film Fe/Mg/Fe/Pd multilayers by the optical technique Hydrogenography. The hydrogenation of nanosized magnesium layers in Fe/Mg/Fe multilayers surprisingly shows the presence of multiple plateau pressures, whose nature is thickness dependent. In contrast, hydrogen desorption occurs via a single plateau which does not depend on the Mg layer thickness. From structural and morphological analyses with X-ray diffraction/reflectometry and cross-section TEM, we find that the Mg layer roughness is large when deposited on Fe and furthermore contains high-angle grain boundaries (GB's). When grown on Ti, the Mg layer roughness is low and no high-angle GB's are detected. From a Ti/Mg/Fe multilayer, in which the Mg layer is flat and has little or no GB's, we conclude that MgH2 is indeed destabilized by the interface with Fe. In this case, both the ab- and desorption plateau pressures are increased by a factor two compared to the hydrogenation of Mg within Ti/Mg/Ti multilayers. We hypothesize that the GB's in the Fe/Mg/Fe multilayer act as diffusion pathways for Pd, which is known to greatly alter the hydrogenation behavior of Mg when the two materials share an interface. Abstract: The pinning mechanism of MOCVD-grown YBCO coated conductors with Y2O3 precipitates was investigated by angle-resolved transport measurement of Je in a wide range of temperature and magnetic fields. Aside from the Y2O3 nanoprecipitates, a-axis grains and threading dislocation along the c-axis were found in the YBCO layer. The Y2O3 precipitates are less effective pinning centers at lower temperature. The tapes with precipitates show a higher anisotropy with larger J(c) at H parallel to ab than H parallel to c. This behavior was attributed to the preferred alignment of the nanoprecipitates along the ab-plane.

Abstract: A numerical approach to GinzburgLandau (GL) theory is demonstrated and we review its applications to several examples of current interest in the research on superconductivity. This analysis also shows the applicability of the two-dimensional approach to thin superconductors and the re-defined effective GL parameter κ. For two-gap superconductors, the conveniently written GL equations directly show that the magnetic behavior of the sample depends not just on the GL parameter of two bands, but also on the ratio of respective coherence lengths.

Abstract: We study the vortex profiles in two-gap superconductors using the extended Ginzburg-Landau theory. The results shed more light on the disparity between the effective length scales in two bands. We compare the behavior expected from the standard Ginzburg-Landau theory with this new approach, and find good qualitative agreement in the case of LiFeAs. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Using improved Wigner-Brillouin perturbation theory we study resonant electron-phonon interaction in a semiconductor quantum dot. We predict pinning of the excited energy levels to the ground state level plus one optical phonon as a function of the strength of the confinement potential. This effect should be observable through optical spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract: The split-operator technique for wave packet propagation in quantum systems is expanded here to the case of propagatingwave functions describing Schrodinger particles, namely, charge carriers in semiconductor nanostructures within the effective mass approximation, in the presence of Zeeman effect, as well as of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. We also demonstrate that simple modifications to the expanded technique allow us to calculate the time evolution of wave packets describing Dirac particles, which are relevant for the study of transport properties in graphene.

Abstract: We have investigated the superconducting properties of Pb nanoparticles with a diameter ranging from 8 to 20 nm, synthesized by Pb+ ion implantation in a crystalline Al matrix. A detailed structural characterization of the nanocomposites reveals the highly epitaxial relation between the Al crystalline matrix and the Pb nanoparticles. The Al/Pb nanocomposites display a single superconducting transition, with the critical temperature T-c increasing with the Pb content. The dependence of T-c on the Pb/Al volume ratio was compared with theoretical models of the superconducting proximity effect based on the bulk properties of Al and Pb. A very good correspondence with the strong-coupling proximity effect model was found, with an electron-phonon coupling constant in the Pb nanoparticles slightly reduced compared to bulk Pb. Our result differs from other studies on Pb nanoparticle based proximity systems where weak-coupling models were found to better describe the T-c dependence. We infer that the high interface quality resulting from the ion implantation synthesis method is a determining factor for the superconducting properties. Critical field and critical current measurements support the high quality of the nanocomposite superconducting films.

Abstract: The existence of the [SrF(0.8)O(0.1)](2.5)[Mn(6)O(12)] = Sr(2.5)Mn(6)O(12.5 – delta)F(2) compound was established in the SrO-Mn(2)O(3)-SrF(2) system at 900A degrees C and p(O(2)) = 1 atm. The crystal structure of strontium fluoromanganite was determined from the X-ray powder diffraction data, electron diffraction, and high-resolution electron microscopy. It can be described in the monoclynic system with four Miller hklm indices: hklm: H = h a* + k b* + l c (1) (*) + m q (1), q (1), q (1) = c (2) (*) = gamma c (1) (*) , gamma a parts per thousand 0.632, a a parts per thousand a a parts per thousand 9.72 , b a parts per thousand 9.55 , c (1) a parts per thousand 2.84 , c (2) a parts per thousand 4.49 , monoclinic angle gamma a parts per thousand 95.6A degrees. The electromotive force method with a solid fluorine ion electrolyte was used to refine the composition of fluoromanganite and determine the thermodynamic functions of its formation from phases neighboring in the phase diagram (SrMn(3)O(6), Mn(2)O(3), SrF(2), and oxygen), Delta GA degrees, kJ/mol = -(111.7 +/- 1.9) + (89.5 +/- 1.5) x 10(-3) T.

Abstract: In this paper, the effects of prolonged bias-enhanced nucleation (prolonged BEN) on the growth mechanisms of diamond are investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) and combined MD-Metropolis Monte Carlo (MD-MMC) simulations. First, cumulative impacts of CxHy+ and Hx+ on an a-C:H/nanodiamond composite were simulated; second, nonconsecutive impacts of the dominant ions were simulated in order to understand the observed phenomena in more detail. As stated in the existing literature, the growth of diamond structures during prolonged BEN is a process that takes place below the surface of the growing film. The investigation of the penetration behavior of CxHy+ and Hx+ species shows that the carbon-containing ions remain trapped within this amorphous phase where they dominate mechanisms like precipitation of sp3 carbon clusters. The H+ ions, however, penetrate into the crystalline phase at high bias voltages (>100 V), destroying the perfect diamond structure. The experimentally measured reduction of grain sizes at high bias voltage, reported in the literature, might thus be related to penetrating H+ ions. Furthermore, the CxHy+ ions are found to be the most efficient sputtering agents, preventing the build up of defective material.
