Abstract: The available synthesized silicene-like structures have been only realized on metallic substrates which are very different from the standalone buckled silicene, e. g., the Dirac cone of silicene is destroyed due to lattice distortion and the interaction with the substrate. Using graphene bilayer as a scaffold, a route is proposed to synthesize silicene with electronic properties decoupled from the substrate. The buckled hexagonal arrangement of silicene between the graphene layers is found to be very similar to the theoretically predicted standalone buckled silicene which is only very weakly van der Waals coupled to the graphene layers with a graphite-like interlayer distance of 3.42 angstrom and without any lattice distortion. Abstract: Two-dimensional electron gas systems patterned into micrometer Hall bars can be used as Hall magnetosensors. In this way, ballistic Hall probes have already been studied and used successfully. Here, the response function of a Hall sensor is determined in the diffusive regime, which allows this device to be used as a magnetosensor for the determination of inhomogeneous magnetic field distributions. Furthermore, the influence of the geometry of the Hall bar on this response function, such as circular corners and asymmetry in the probes, is also investigated and appears to be non-negligible. Abstract: Janus particles present an important class of building blocks for directional assembly. These are compartmentalized colloids with two different hemispheres. Here, we consider a two-dimensional model of Janus disks consisting of a hydrophobic semicircle and an electro-negatively charged one. Placed in a solution, the hydrophobic sides will attract each other while the charged sides will give rise to a repulsive force. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the morphology of these particles when confined in a channel-like environment using a one dimensional harmonic confinement potential. The interest to this system is first of all due to the fact that it could serve as a simple model for membrane formation. Indeed, the recently synthesized new class of artificial amphiphiles, known as Janus dendrimers, were shown to self-assemble in bilayer structures mimicking biological membranes. In turn, Janus particles that combine the amphiphilicity and colloidal rigidity serve as a good model for Janus dendrimers. A variety of ordered membrane-like morphologies are found consisting of single and multiple chain configurations with different orientations of the particles with respect to each other that we summarize in a phase diagram.

Abstract: Diffusive properties of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a parabolic narrow channel and in the presence of a periodic modulated (corrugated) potential along the unconfined direction are studied using Brownian dynamics simulations. We compare our simulation results with the analytical result for the effective diffusion coefficient of a single particle by Festa and d'Agliano [Physica A 90, 229 (1978)] and show the importance of interparticle interaction on the diffusion process. We present results for the diffusion of magnetic dipoles as a function of linear density, strength of the periodic modulation and commensurability factor.

Abstract: We demonstrate site-specific mapping of the oxygen coordination number for transition metals in complex oxides using atomically resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. Pb2Sr2Bi2Fe6O16 contains iron with a constant Fe3+ valency in both octahedral and tetragonal pyramidal coordination and is selected to demonstrate the principle of site-specific coordination mapping. Analysis of the site-specific Fe-L2,3 data reveals distinct variations in the fine structure that are attributed to Fe in a six-fold (octahedron) or five-fold (distorted tetragonal pyramid) oxygen coordination. Using these variations, atomic resolution coordination maps are generated that are in excellent agreement with simulations.

Abstract: The Hall (R-H) and bend (R-B) resistances of a graphene Hall bar structure containing a pn-junction are calculated when in the ballistic regime. The simulations are done using the billiard model. Introducing a pn-junction-dividing the Hall bar geometry in two regions-leads to two distinct regimes exhibiting very different physics: (1) both regions are of n-type and (2) one region is n-type and the other p-type. In regime (1), a “Hall plateau”-an enhancement of the resistance-appears for R-H. On the other hand, in regime (2), we found a negative R-H, which approaches zero for large B. The bend resistance is highly asymmetric in regime (2) and the resistance increases with increasing magnetic field B in one direction while it reduces to zero in the other direction. Abstract: The photo-response of a thin current-carrying superconducting stripe with a 90 degrees turn is studied within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. We show that the photon acting near the inner corner (where the current density is maximal due to the current crowding [J. R. Clem and K. K. Berggren, Phys. Rev. B 84, 174510 (2011)]) triggers the nucleation of superconducting vortices at currents much smaller than the expected critical one, but does not bring the system to a higher resistive state and thus remains undetected. The transition to the resistive state occurs only when the photon hits the stripe away from the corner due to there uniform current distribution across the sample, and dissipation is due to the nucleation of a kinematic vortex-antivortex pair near the photon incidence. Abstract: We investigate theoretically the transport properties of Dirac fermions on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. Dirac electrons can be totally reflected in front of a magnetic/electric p-n junction. For a p-n-p structure, multiple total internal reflections at the interfaces result in the bound states in the channel, which behaves like an electronic waveguide. This p-n-p like structure exhibits spin and momentum filtering features and could be used as a spin and/or charge diode.

Abstract: We study ballistic electron transport through a finite chain of quantum circular rings in the presence of spin-orbit interaction of strength alpha. For a single ring, the transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained analytically and from them the conductance for a chain of rings as a function of alpha and of the wave vector k of the incident electron. We show that due to destructive spin interferences, the chain can be totally opaque for certain ranges of k, the width of which depends on the value of alpha. A periodic modulation of the strength alpha or of the ring radius widens the gaps considerably and produces a nearly binary conductance output. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Spin-dependent tunneling of electrons in a diluted magnetic semiconductor ZnSe/Zn1-xMnxSe/Zn1-yMnySe/ZnSe/Zn1-xMnxSe/ZnSe heterostructure is investigated theoretically in the presence of parallel magnetic and electric fields, but our modeling is appropriate for any dilute magnetic II-VI semiconductor system. In the studied asymmetric system the transmission of electrons and the degree of spin polarization depend on the strength of the magnetic and electric fields and on the direction of the applied bias. For suitable magnetic fields, the output current of the system exhibits a nearly 100% spin polarization and the device can be used as a spin filter. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of single layers of Iron Dichloride (FeCl2) were calculated using first principles calculations. We found that the 1T phase of the single layer FeCl2 is 0.17 eV/unit cell more favorable than its 1H phase. The structural stability is confirmed by phonon calculations. We found that 1T-FeCl2 possess three Raman-active (130, 179, and 237 cm(-1)) and one infrared-active (279 cm(-1)) phonon branches. The electronic band dispersion of the 1T-FeCl2 is calculated using both gradient approximation of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof and DFT-HSE06 functionals. Both functionals reveal that the 1T-FeCl2 has a half-metallic ground state with a Curie temperature of 17 K. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: A comparative study is made of the strain distribution in cylindrical InAs/GaAs and InP/InGaP self-assembled quantum dots as obtained from isotropic elasticity theory, the anisotropic continuum mechanical model, and from atomistic calculations. For the isotropic case, the recently proposed approach [J. H. Davies, J. Appl. Phys. 84, 1358 (1998)] is used, while the finite-element method, the valence force field method, and Stillinger-Weber potentials are employed to calculate the strain in anisotropic structures. We found that all four methods result in strain distributions of similar shapes, but with notable quantitative differences inside the dot and near the disk-matrix boundary. The variations of the diagonal strains with the height of the quantum dot, with fixed radius, as calculated from all models, are almost linear. Furthermore, the energies of the band edges in the two types of quantum dots are extracted from the multiband effective-mass theory by inserting the strain distributions as obtained by the four models. We demonstrated that all strain models produce effective potentials for the heavy and light holes which agree very well inside the dot. A negligible anisotropy of all normal strains in the (x,y) plane is found, which, providing the axial symmetry of the kinetic part of the multiband effective-mass Hamiltonian, justifies the use of the axial approximation. Strain propagation along the vertical direction is also considered with the aim to study the influence of strain on the electron coupling in stacks of quantum dots. We found that the interaction between the strain fields of the individual quantum dots makes the effective quantum wells for the electrons in the conduction band shallower, thereby counteracting the quantum mechanical coupling.
