Abstract: Quasi phase-pure (>98 wt %) MAX phase solid solution ceramics with the (ZryTi)(2)(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C stoichiometry and variable Zr/Ti ratios were synthesized by both reactive hot pressing and pressureless sintering of ZrH2, TiH2, Al, Sn, and C powder mixtures. The influence of the different processing parameters, such as applied pressure and sintering atmosphere, on phase purity and microstructure of the produced ceramics was investigated. The addition of Sn to the (Zr,Ti)(2)AlC system was the key to achieve phase purity. Its effect on the crystal structure of a 211-type MAX phase was assessed by calculating the distortions of the octahedral M6C and trigonal M(6)A prisms due to steric effects. The M(6)A prismatic distortion values were found to be smaller in Sn-containing double solid solutions than in the (Zr,Ti)(2)AlC MAX phases. The coefficients of thermal expansion along the < a > and < c > directions were measured by means of Rietveld refinement of high-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction data of (Zr1-x,Ti-x)(2)(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C MAX phase solid solutions with x = 0, 0.3, 0.7, and 1. The thermal expansion coefficient data of the Ti-2(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C solid solution were compared with those of the Ti2AlC and Ti2SnC ternary compounds. The thermal expansion anisotropy increased in the (Zr,Ti)(2)(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C double solid solution MAX phases as compared to the Zr-2(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C and Ti-2(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C end-members.

Abstract: A transition-metal-only MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 polycrystalline oxide was prepared by a reaction of starting materials MnO, MnO2, Fe2O3, RuO2 at 6 GPa and 1873 K for 30 minutes. A combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction refinements indicated that MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 adopts the corundum (alpha-Fe2O3) structure type with space group R (3) over barc, in which all metal ions are disordered. The centrosymmetric nature of the MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 structure is corroborated by transmission electron microscopy, lack of optical second harmonic generation, X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy of MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 showed the oxidation states of Mn, Fe, and Ru to be 2+/3+, 3+, and similar to 4+, respectively. Resistivity measurements revealed that MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 is a semiconductor. Magnetic measurements and magnetic structure refinements indicated that MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 orders antiferromagnetically around 400 K, with magnetic moments slightly canted away from the c axis. Fe-57 Mossbauer confirmed the magnetic ordering and Fe3+ (S = 5/2) magnetic hyperfine splitting. First principles calculations are provided to understand the electronic structure more thoroughly. A comparison of synthesis and properties of MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 and related corundum Mn2BB'O-6 derivatives is discussed.

Abstract: Precise control of elemental configurations within multimetallic nanoparticles could enable access to functional nanomaterials with significant performance benefits. Here, we present a one-pot synthesis of supported Ag@PdAg core-shell catalyst with an ordered PdAg alloy shell and an Ag core. Both the relative reduction potential and ratio of metal precursors are essential for this synthesis strategy. The distinguished properties of Ag@PdAg, particularly the electronic structure, indicates the existence of electron modification not only between Pd and Ag on PdAg shell, but between Ag core and alloy shell. The Ag@PdAg catalyst displays 97% ethene yield in the partial hydrogenation of acetylene, which is 2.0 and 8.1 times that of over PdAg alloy and pure Pd catalysts, and this is the most selective catalyst reported to data under industrial evaluation conditions. Moreover, this core-shell structure exhibits preferable stability with comparison to PdAg alloy catalyst. The facile synthesis of core-shell architecture with alloy shell structure provides a new platform for efficient catalytic transfer of chemical resource. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Vertically aligned nitrogen-doped nanocrystalline diamond nanorods are fabricated from nitrogen-doped nanocrystalline diamond films using reactive ion etching in oxygen plasma. These nanorods show enhanced thermionic electron emission (TEE) characteristics, viz.. a high current density of 12.0 mA/cm(2) and a work function value of 4.5 eV with an applied voltage of 3 Vat 923 K. The enhanced TEE characteristics of these nanorods are ascribed to the induction of nanographitic phases at the grain boundaries and the field penetration effect through the local field enhancement from nanorods owing to a high aspect ratio and an excellent field enhancement factor.

Abstract: This work demonstrates the applicability of one-dimensional nitrogen-doped diamond nanorods (N-DNRs) for the simultaneous electrochemical (EC) detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions in an electrolyte solution. Well separated voltammetric peaks are observed for Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions using N-DNRs as a working electrode in square wave anodic stripping voltammetry measurements. Moreover, the cyclic voltammetry response of N-DNR electrodes towards the Fe(CN)(6)(/4-)/Fe(CN)(6)(/3-) redox reaction is better as compared to undoped DNR electrodes. This enhancement of EC performance in N-DNR electrodes is accounted by the increased amount of sp(2) bonded nanographitic phases, enhancing the electrical conductivity at the grain boundary (GB) regions. These findings are supported by transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy studies. Consequently, the GB defect induced N-DNRs exhibit better adsorption of metal ions, which makes such samples promising candidates for next generation EC sensing devices. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: A “patterned-seeding technique” in combination with a “nanodiamond masked reactive ion etching process” is demonstrated for fabricating vertically aligned diamond-graphite hybrid (DGH) nanorod arrays. The DGH nanorod arrays possess superior field electron emission (FEE) behavior with a low turn-on field, long lifetime stability, and large field enhancement factor. Such an enhanced FEE is attributed to the nanocomposite nature of theDGHnanorods, which contain sp(2)-graphitic phases in the boundaries of nano-sized diamond grains. The simplicity in the nanorod fabrication process renders the DGH nanorods of greater potential for the applications as cathodes in field emission displays and microplasma display devices. Abstract: While titanium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely studied for their (photo) catalytic potential, only a few Ti-IV MOFs have been reported owing to the high reactivity of the employed titanium precursors. The synthesis of COK-47 is now presented, the first Ti carboxylate MOF based on sheets of (TiO6)-O-IV octahedra, which can be synthesized with a range of different linkers. COK-47 can be synthesized as an inherently defective nanoparticulate material, rendering it a highly efficient catalyst for the oxidation of thiophenes. Its structure was determined by continuous rotation electron diffraction and studied in depth by X-ray total scattering, EXAFS, and solid-state NMR. Furthermore, its photoactivity was investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance and demonstrated by catalytic photodegradation of rhodamine 6G.

Abstract: Almost 30 years after the detection of chronic interstitial nephritis in agricultural communities (CINAC) its etiology remains unknown. To help define this we examined 34 renal biopsies from Sri Lanka, El Salvador, India and France of patients with chronic kidney disease 2-3 and diagnosed with CINAC by light and electron microscopy. In addition to known histopathology, we identified a unique constellation of proximal tubular cell findings including large dysmorphic lysosomes with a light-medium electron-dense matrix containing dispersed dark electron-dense non-membrane bound “aggregates”. These aggregates associated with varying degrees of cellular/tubular atrophy, apparent cell fragment shedding and no-weak proximal tubular cell proliferative capacity. Identical lysosomal lesions, identifiable by electron microscopy, were observed in 9% of renal transplant implantation biopsies, but were more prevalent in six month (50%) and 12 month (67%) protocol biopsies and in indication biopsies (76%) of calcineurin inhibitor treated transplant patients. The phenotype was also found associated with nephrotoxic drugs (lomustine, clomiphene, lithium, cocaine) and in some patients with light chain tubulopathy, all conditions that can be directly or indirectly linked to calcineurin pathway inhibition or modulation. One hundred biopsies of normal kidneys, drug/toxin induced nephropathies, and overt proteinuric patients of different etiologies to some extent could demonstrate the light microscopic proximal tubular cell changes, but rarely the electron microscopic lysosomal features. Rats treated with the calcineurin inhibitor cyclosporine for four weeks developed similar proximal tubular cell lysosomal alterations, which were absent in a dehydration group. Overall, the finding of an identical proximal tubular cell (lysosomal) lesion in CINAC and calcineurin inhibitor nephrotoxicity in different geographic regions suggests a common paradigm where CINAC patients undergo a tubulotoxic mechanism similar to calcineurin inhibitor nephrotoxicity.

Abstract: Selective laser melting (SLM) manufactured AlSi10Mg alloys present a fine silicon-rich network and precipitates which grant high mechanical strength but low ductility. Post-treatments, aiming at eliminating inherent defects related to SLM such as residual stresses, porosity or inhomogeneity, result in significant changes in the microstructure and impact both the hardening and the damage mechanisms of the post-treated material. The present work is dedicated to the investigation of the fracture of SLM AlSi10Mg under as built and three post-treatment conditions, namely two stress relieve heat treatments and friction stir processing (FSP). It is found that the interconnected Si network fosters damage at low strain due to the brittleness of the Si phase. The onset of damage transfers load to the enclosed Al phase which then fractures quickly under high stress, thus leading to low material ductility. In contrast, when the Si network is globularized into Si particles, the ductility is highly increased even in the case where the porosity and inhomogeneity of the microstructure remain after the post-treatment. The ductility enhancement results from the delay in void nucleation on the Si particles as well as from the tolerance for void growth in the Al matrix.

Abstract: Supercabatteries have the characteristics of supercapacitors and batteries, namely high power and energy densities as well as long cycle life. To construct them, capacitor electrodes with wide potential windows and/or redox electrolytes are required. Herein, graphite@diamond nano-needles and an aqueous solution of Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) are utilized as the capacitor electrode and the electrolyte, respectively. This diamond capacitor electrode has a nitrogen-doped diamond core and a nano-graphitic shell. In 0.05 M Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) + 1.0 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution, the fabricated supercabattery has a capacitance of 66.65 mF cm(-2) at a scan rate of 10 mV s(-1). It is stable over 10 000 charge/discharge cycles. The symmetric supercabattery device assembled using a two-electrode system possesses energy and power densities of 10.40 W h kg(-1) and 6.96 kW kg(-1), respectively. These values are comparable to those of other energy storage devices. Therefore, diamond supercabatteries are promising for many industrial applications.

Abstract: New hybrid materials-photosensitized nanocomposites containing nanocrystal heterostructures with spatial charge separation, show high response for practically important sub-ppm level NO2 detection at room temperature. Nanocomposites ZnO/CdSe, ZnO/(CdS@CdSe), and ZnO/(ZnSe@CdS) were obtained by the immobilization of nanocrystals-colloidal quantum dots (QDs), on the matrix of nanocrystalline ZnO. The formation of crystalline core-shell structure of QDs was confirmed by HAADF-STEM coupled with EELS mapping. Optical properties of photosensitizers have been investigated by optical absorption and luminescence spectroscopy combined with spectral dependences of photoconductivity, which proved different charge localization regimes. Photoelectrical and gas sensor properties of nanocomposites have been studied at room temperature under green light (max = 535 nm) illumination in the presence of 0.12-2 ppm NO2 in air. It has been demonstrated that sensitization with type II heterostructure ZnSe@CdS with staggered gap provides the rapid growth of effective photoresponse with the increase in the NO2 concentration in air and the highest sensor sensitivity toward NO2. We believe that the use of core-shell QDs with spatial charge separation opens new possibilities in the development of light-activated gas sensors working without thermal heating.

Abstract: La3Ni2-xCuxB'O-9 (x = 0.25; B' = Sb, Ta, Nb: x = 0.5; B' = Nb) have been synthesized and characterised by transmission electron microscopy, neutron diffraction and magnetometry. Each adopts a perovskite-like structure (space group P2(1)/n) with two crystallographically-distinct six-coordinate sites, one occupied by a disordered arrangement of Ni2+ and Cu2+ and the other by a disordered similar to 1:2 distribution of Ni2+ and B'(5+), although some Cu2+ is found on the latter site when x = 0.5. Each composition undergoes a magnetic transition in the range 90 <= T/K <= 130 and shows a spontaneous magnetisation at 5 K; the transition temperature always exceeds that of the x = 0 composition by >= 30 K. A long-range ordered G-type ferrimagnetic structure is present in each composition, but small relaxor domains are also present. This contrasts with the pure relaxor and spin-glass behaviour of x = 0, B' = Ta, Nb, respectively.

Abstract: Binary metal oxides with superior charge capacity and electrochemical activity have gained great interests. In this work, monodispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters on the ordered mesoporous carbons were fabricated by a facile self-developed impregnation method. The synthesized hybrids possess improved wettability, high specific surface area (> 700m(2)/g) and regular mesoporous channels (similar to 4 nm), resulting in improved electrochemical performance for supercapacitors. These well-dispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters exhibit a significant specific capacitance up to 367 F/g in the aqueous KNO3 electrolyte and good reversibility with a cycling efficiency of 99.8%. It is proposed that the mesoporous structure can facilitate the diffusion of electrolyte ions and then accelerate the electrochemical utilization of CoMoO4 nanoclusters. The results demonstrate that the produced binary metal oxide nanoclusters with excellent capacitance and good retention can be used as promising electrodes for the environment-friendly supercapacitors.
