“Coupled anion and cation ordering in Sr3RFe4O10.5 (R=Y, Ho, Dy) anion-deficientperovskites”. Abakumov AM, d' Hondt H, Rossell MD, Tsirlin AA, Gutnikova O, Filimonov DS, Schnelle W, Rosner H, Hadermann J, Van Tendeloo G, Antipov EV, Journal of solid state chemistry 183, 2845 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2010.09.039
Abstract: The Sr3RFe4O10.5 (R=Y, Ho, Dy) anion-deficient perovskites were prepared using a solid-state reaction in evacuated sealed silica tubes. Transmission electron microscopy and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy evidenced a complete A-cations and oxygen vacancies ordering. The structure model was further refined by ab initio structure relaxation, based on density functional theory calculations. The compounds crystallize in a tetragonal a≈2√2ap≈11.3 Å, с≈4сp≈16 Å unit cell (ap: parameter of the perovskite subcell) with the P42/mnm space group. Oxygen vacancies reside in the (FeO5/4□3/4) layers, comprising corner-sharing FeO4 tetrahedra and FeO5 tetragonal pyramids, which are sandwiched between the layers of the FeO6 octahedra. Smaller R atoms occupy the 9-fold coordinated position, whereas the 10-fold coordinated positions are occupied by larger Sr atoms. The Fe sublattice is ordered aniferromagnetically up to at least 500 K, while the rare-earth sublattice remains disordered down to 2 K.

“Discovery of a superhard iron tetraboride superconductor”. Abstract: Single crystals of novel orthorhombic (space group Pnnm) iron tetraboride FeB4 were synthesized at pressures above 8 GPa and high temperatures. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements demonstrate bulk superconductivity below 2.9 K. The putative isotope effect on the superconducting critical temperature and the analysis of specific heat data indicate that the superconductivity in FeB4 is likely phonon mediated, which is rare for Fe-based superconductors. The discovered iron tetraboride is highly incompressible and has the nanoindentation hardness of 62(5) GPa; thus, it opens a new class of highly desirable materials combining advanced mechanical properties and superconductivity.

“Frustrated pentagonal Cairo lattice in the non-collinear antiferromagnet Bi4Fe5O13F”. Abakumov AM, Batuk D, Tsirlin AA, Prescher C, Dubrovinsky L, Sheptyakov DV, Schnelle W, Hadermann J, Van Tendeloo G, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 87, 024423 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.87.024423
Abstract: We report on the crystal structure and magnetism of the iron-based oxyfluoride Bi4Fe5O13F, a material prototype of the Cairo pentagonal spin lattice. The crystal structure of Bi4Fe5O13F is determined by a combination of neutron diffraction, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It comprises layers of FeO6 octahedra and FeO4 tetrahedra forming deformed pentagonal units. The topology of these layers resembles a pentagonal least-perimeter tiling, which is known as the Cairo lattice. This topology gives rise to frustrated exchange couplings and underlies a sequence of magnetic transitions at T-1 = 62 K, T-2 = 71 K, and T-N = 178 K, as determined by thermodynamic measurements and neutron diffraction. Below T-1, Bi4Fe5O13F forms a fully ordered non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure, whereas the magnetic state between T-1 and T-N may be partially disordered according to the sizable increase in the magnetic entropy at T-1 and T-2. Bi4Fe5O13F reveals unanticipated magnetic transitions on the pentagonal Cairo spin lattice and calls for a further work on finite-temperature properties of this strongly frustrated spin model. “Ordering of Pd2+ and Pd4+ in the mixed-valent palladate KPd2O3”. Panin RV, Khasanova NR, Bougerol C, Schnelle W, Van Tendeloo G, Antipov EV, Inorganic chemistry 49, 1295 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1021/ic902187a
Abstract: A new potassium palladate KPd2O3 was synthesized by the reaction of KO2 and PdO at elevated oxygen pressure. Its crystal structure was solved from powder X-ray diffraction data in the space group Rm (a = 6.0730(1) Å, c = 18.7770(7) Å, and Z = 6). KPd2O3 represents a new structure type, consisting of an alternating sequence of K+ and Pd2O3− layers with ordered Pd2+ and Pd4+ ions. The presence of palladium ions in di- and tetravalent low-spin states was confirmed by magnetic susceptibility measurements.

“Spatial separation of covalent, ionic, and metallic interactions in Mg11Rh18B8 and Mg3Rh5B3”. Alekseeva AM, Abakumov AM, Leither-Jasper A, Schnelle W, Prots Y, Van Tendeloo G, Antipov EV, Grin Y, Chemistry: a European journal 19, 17860 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1002/chem.201301512
Abstract: The crystal structures of Mg11Rh18B8 and Mg3Rh5B3 have been investigated by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Mg11Rh18B8: space group P4/mbm; a=17.9949(7), c=2.9271(1)angstrom; Z=2. Mg3Rh5B3: space group Pmma; a=8.450(2), b=2.8644(6), c=11.602(2)angstrom; Z=2. Both crystal structures are characterized by trigonal prismatic coordination of the boron atoms by rhodium atoms. The [BRh6] trigonal prisms form arrangements with different connectivity patterns. Analysis of the chemical bonding by means of the electron-localizability/electron-density approach reveals covalent BRh interactions in these arrangements and the formation of BRh polyanions. The magnesium atoms that are located inside the polyanions interact ionically with their environment, whereas, in the structure parts, which are mainly formed by Mg and Rh atoms, multicenter (metallic) interactions are observed. Diamagnetic behavior and metallic electron transport of the Mg11Rh18B8 and Mg3Rh5B3 phases are in agreement with the bonding picture and the band structure.

Abstract: Two new ternary arsenides, namely, Eu7Cu44As23 and Sr7Cu44As23, were synthesized from elements at 800 degrees C. Their crystal structure represents a new filled version of the BaHg11 motif with cubic voids alternately occupied by Eu(Sr) and As atoms, resulting in a 2 x 2 x 2 superstructure of the aristotype: space group Fm (3) over barm, a = 16.6707(2) angstrom and 16.7467(2) angstrom, respectively. The Eu derivative exhibits ferromagnetic ordering below 17.5 K. In agreement with band structure calculations both compounds are metals, exhibiting relatively low thermopower, but high electrical and low thermal conductivity.
