Abstract: Graphene interconnects are being considered as a promising candidate for beyond CMOS applications, thanks to the intrinsic higher carrier mobility, lower aspect ratio and better reliability with respect to conventional Cu damascene interconnects. However, similarly to Cu, line edge roughness can seriously affect graphene resistance, something which must be taken into account when evaluating the related performance benefits. In this letter, we present a model for assessing the impact of edge scattering on the resistance of graphene interconnects. Our model allows the evaluation of the total mean free path in graphene lines as a function of graphene width, diffusive scattering probability and edge roughness standard deviation and autocorrelation length. We compare our model with other models from literature by benchmarking them using the same set of experimental data. We show that, as opposed to the considered models from literature, our model is capable to describe the mobility drop with scaling caused by significantly rough edges.

Abstract: The radiation damage created in silicon materials by Mn-57 -> Fe-57 ion implantation has been studied and characterized by Mossbauer spectroscopy showing four main lines, assigned to: substitutional, interstitial and damaged configuration sites of the implanted ions. Nevertheless, the Mossbauer spectrum of Fe-57 in this materials remains with some ambiguous identification regarding the implantation configurations before and after annealing, specially the damaged configurations and its evolution. In the present work some possible implantation configurations are suggested and evaluated using a multiscale approach by Monte Carlo ion transport and electronic structure calculations within DFT. The proposed implantation environments were evaluated in terms of stability and the Fe-57 hyperfine parameters were calculated to establish the connections with the experimental observations. Good agreement was found between the experimental and the calculated hyperfine parameters for some configurations; suggesting which ones could be the implantation environments before and after sample annealing.

Abstract: In a standard state-of-the-art measurement the head-related transfer function (HRTF) is obtained in an anechoic room with an elaborate setup involving multiple calibrated loudspeakers. In search for a simplified method that would open up the possibility for an HRTF measurement in a home environment, it has been suggested that this setup could be replaced with one with a single, fixed loudspeaker. In such a setup, the subject samples different directions by moving the head with respect to this loudspeaker, while the head movements are tracked in some way. In this paper, the feasibility of such an approach is studied. To this end, the HRTF is measured in an unmodified (non-anechoic) room by means of a single external speaker and a high resolution head tracking system. The differences between the dynamically obtained HRTF and the standard static HRTF are investigated, and are shown to be mostly due to variable torso reflections.

Abstract: Microtwin sequences in Ni66Al34 martensite plates of different size were investigated by electron microscopy. Although mostly irregular sequences were observed an average twin width w can be determined which increases with twin length L following the expected relation w ~ sqrt(L). High resolution electron microscopy was used to study the twin branching close to the plate boundaries and an atomic model for the branching of a microtwin and the changes in twin thickness is suggested

Abstract: Two routes were investigated to selectively recover lead and minor metals (Cu, Ni, Zn) from a sulfide-rich lead smelter residue, matte. The first route comprises a two-step leaching process that combines Fe(III)-HNO3 leaching with roasting, followed by water leaching. In the first step, the efficiency of Pb leaching was 90% at the optimum condition (L/S ratio 8, 0.5 mol.L-1 HNO3, 0.15 mol.L-1 Fe(III), 25 degrees C). In the second step, roasting at 600 degrees C followed by water leaching at 50 degrees C selectively leached Ni, Cu, and Zn while fully converting iron sulfides to oxides. One-step oxidative pressure leaching in HNO3 was investigated as an alternative to simultaneously leach Pb, Cu, Ni and Zn. At the optimal conditions (130 degrees C, 60 min, 0.3 mol.L-1 HNO3, 0.07 mol.L-1 Fe(III), L/S ratio 20), Pb, Cu, Zn and Ni leaching were 92, 60, 70 and 66%, respectively, while Fe leaching remained low (2%). The leachates obtained from both leaching routes were treated by ion-exchange adsorption with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) functionalized chitosan-silica hybrid materials to investigate the selective recovery of Cu, Zn and Ni. The adsorption order appeared to be in the same order as the corresponding stability constants for complexes between the respective metal ions and free DTPA: Ca(II) < Zn(II) < Pb (II) approximate to Ni(II) < Cu(II). This allows not only to selectively recover Cu, Zn and Ni from the leachates, but also to mutually separate them by using the functionalized resin as a stationary phase in column chromatography. To avoid adsorbent contamination, Fe(III) and Pb(II) may be removed from the leachates in a pre-treatment step. Based on these results, the investigated methods can be combined as process steps of two possible routes for the selective recovery of valuable metals from the studied secondary lead smelting residue. The two-step leaching process seems to be superior since a more concentrated solution of Cu, Ni, and Zn is produced in the 2nd leaching step with low capital cost.

Abstract: Several HNO3-based leaching approaches were tested and optimized to selectively recover Pb and other minor metals (Cu, Ni, Zn) from secondary lead smelter residues (i.e., slag and matte). Firstly, the leaching behaviors of Pb and the matrix element Fe were studied at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range 25-70 degrees C. These elements were present in both materials studied as sulfide and oxide phases. For the sulfur-rich matte residue, the Pb leaching increased from 63% to 69% upon increasing the HNO3 concentration from 0.2 M to 0.5 M. However, by adding Fe(III) as an oxidation agent, Pb leaching from the matte amounted to 90% at 25 degrees C. At a higher temperature, Pb leaching was reduced due to PbSO4 precipitation. In this process, Cu, Zn and Ni leaching was insignificant. For the slag residue, HNO3 could not leach Pb (0.03% Pb leached), while Fe leaching was 19.8% due to a galvanic effect. However, Pb leaching of the slag was 82% in the presence of additional Fe(III). Secondly, to enhance leaching of the other base metals (Cu, Zn and Ni) from the matte, roasting followed by water leaching and (microwave assisted or autoclave) pressurized leaching in 0.5 M HNO3 were applied. During roasting, the FeS phase converted to Fe2O3 above 500 degrees C, and PbS and Pb phases were transformed into insoluble PbSO4 above 400 degrees C. Cu, Ni and Zn leaching was drastically enhanced by a roasting step at 600 degrees C followed by leaching with 0.5 M HNO3 at 50 degrees C, or by pressurized HNO3 leaching above 130 degrees C, whereby Pb leaching almost ceased due to PbSO4 precipitation. During the roasting above 600 degrees C, or microwave assisted extraction (MAE) at 160 degrees C for 15 min, FeS was completely converted to iron oxides that can be used as raw material for pig iron production. Based on the results, the methods investigated can be combined as process steps of two possible routes for the selective recovery of valuable metals and the production of a clean source of Fe oxides from the secondary lead smelting residues studied. Abstract: Monitoring and modelling tools may improve irrigation strategies in precision agriculture. We used non-invasive soil moisture monitoring, a crop growth and a soil hydrological model to predict soil water content fluctuations and crop yield in a heterogeneous sandy grassland soil under supplementary irrigation. The sensitivity of the soil hydrological model to hydraulic parameters, water stress, crop yield and lower boundary conditions was assessed after integrating models. Free drainage and incremental constant head conditions were implemented in a lower boundary sensitivity analysis. A time-dependent sensitivity analysis of the hydraulic parameters showed that changes in soil water content are mainly affected by the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity K-s and the Mualem-van Genuchten retention curve shape parameters n and alpha. Results further showed that different parameter optimization strategies (two-, three-, four- or six-parameter optimizations) did not affect the calculated water stress and water content as significantly as does the bottom boundary. In this case, a two-parameter scenario, where K-s was optimized for each layer under the condition of a constant groundwater depth at 135-140 cm, performed best. A larger yield reduction, and a larger number and longer duration of stress conditions occurred in the free drainage condition as compared to constant boundary conditions. Numerical results showed that optimal irrigation scheduling using the aforementioned water stress calculations can save up to 12-22 % irrigation water as compared to the current irrigation regime. This resulted in a yield increase of 4.5-6.5 %, simulated by the crop growth model.

Abstract: Knowledge on groundwater-surface water interaction and especially on exchange fluxes between streams and aquifers is an important prerequisite for the study of transport and fate of contaminants and nutrients in the hyporheic zone. One possibility to quantify groundwater-surface water exchange fluxes is by using heat as an environmlental tracer. Modern field equipment including multilevel temperature sticks and the novel open-source analysis tool LPML make this technique ever more attractive. The recently developed LPML method solves the one-dimensional fluid flow and heat transport equation by combining a local polynomial method with a maximum likelihood estimator. In this study, we apply the LPML method on field data to quantify the spatial and temporal variability of vertical fluxes and their uncertainties from temperature-time series measured in a Belgian lowland stream. Over several months, temperature data were collected with multilevel temperature sticks at the streambed top and at six depths for a small stream section. Long-term estimates show a range from gaining fluxes of -291 mm day(-1) to loosing fluxes of 12 mm day(-1); average seasonal fluxes ranged from -138 mm day(-1) in winter to -16 mm day(-1) in summer. With our analyses, we could determine a high spatial and temporal variability of vertical exchange fluxes for the investigated stream section. Such spatial and temporal variability should be taken into account in biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nutrients and metals and in fate analysis of contaminant plumes. In general, the stream section was gaining during most of the observation period. Two short-term high stream stage events, seemingly caused by blockage of the stream outlet, led to a change in flow direction from gaining to losing conditions. We also found more discharge occurring at the outer stream bank than at the inner one indicating a local flow-through system. Abstract: Effective abatement of the greenhouse gas sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) waste is of great importance for the environment protection. This work investigates the size effect and the surface properties of gamma-Al2O3 pellets on SF6 degradation in a packed bed dielectric barrier discharge (PB-DBD) system. Experimental results show that decreasing the packing size improves the filamentary discharges and promotes the ignition and the maintenance of plasma, enhancing the degradation performance at low input powers. However, too small packing pellets decrease the gas residence time and reduce the degradation efficiency, especially for the input power beyond 80 W. Besides, lowering the packing size promotes the generation of SO2, while reduces the yields of S-O-F products, corresponding to a better degradation. After the discharge, the pellet surface becomes smoother with the appearance of S and F elements. Density functional theory calculations show that SF6 is likely to be adsorbed at the Al-III site over the gamma-Al2O3(110) surface, and it is much more easily to decompose than in the gas phase. The fluorine gaseous products can decompose and stably adsorb on the pellet surface to change the surface element composition. This work provides a better understanding of SF6 degradation in a PB-DBD system.
