Title The healing lengths in two-band superconductors in extended Ginzburg-Landau theory Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication (down) Physica: C : superconductivity Abbreviated Journal Physica C
Volume 479 Issue Pages 126-129
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We study the vortex profiles in two-gap superconductors using the extended Ginzburg-Landau theory. The results shed more light on the disparity between the effective length scales in two bands. We compare the behavior expected from the standard Ginzburg-Landau theory with this new approach, and find good qualitative agreement in the case of LiFeAs. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Volume 470 Issue 19 Pages 871-873

Abstract A superconducting rod with a magnetic moment on top develops vortices obtained here through 3D calculations of the GinzburgLandau theory. The inhomogeneity of the applied field brings new properties to the vortex patterns that vary according to the rod thickness. We find that for thin rods (disks) the vortex patterns are similar to those obtained in presence of a homogeneous magnetic field instead because they consist of giant vortex states. For thick rods novel patterns are obtained as vortices are curve lines in space that exit through the lateral surface.

Abstract It is well-known that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory is a reliable and powerful theoretical tool to investigate the magnetic response of a superconducting state. However, in its standard form, this approach is not applicable to atomically uniform nano-thin superconducting films which are effective multiband superconductors. Here we discuss a relevant generalization of the GL theory, focusing on the underlying intraband-pairing approximation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Title Quantum canonical ensemble : a projection operator approach Type A1 Journal article
Year 2017 Publication (down) Physica: A : theoretical and statistical physics Abbreviated Journal Physica A
Volume 482 Issue Pages 1-13
Keywords A1 Journal article; Theory of quantum systems and complex systems; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Knowing the exact number of particles N, and taking this knowledge into account, the quantum canonical ensemble imposes a constraint on the occupation number operators. The constraint particularly hampers the systematic calculation of the partition function and any relevant thermodynamic expectation value for arbitrary but fixed N. On the other hand, fixing only the average number of particles, one may remove the above constraint and simply factorize the traces in Fock space into traces over single-particle states. As is well known, that would be the strategy of the grand-canonical ensemble which, however, comes with an additional Lagrange multiplier to impose the average number of particles. The appearance of this multiplier can be avoided by invoking a projection operator that enables a constraint-free computation of the partition function and its derived quantities in the canonical ensemble, at the price of an angular or contour integration. Introduced in the recent past to handle various issues related to particle-number projected statistics, the projection operator approach proves beneficial to a wide variety of problems in condensed matter physics for which the canonical ensemble offers a natural and appropriate environment. In this light, we present a systematic treatment of the canonical ensemble that embeds the projection operator into the formalism of second quantization while explicitly fixing N, the very number of particles rather than the average. Being applicable to both bosonic and fermionic systems in arbitrary dimensions, transparent integral representations are provided for the partition function Z(N) and the Helmholtz free energy F-N as well as for two- and four-point correlation functions. The chemical potential is not a Lagrange multiplier regulating the average particle number but can be extracted from FN+1 – F-N, as illustrated for a two-dimensional fermion gas. Title Occupation numbers in a quantum canonical ensemble : a projection operator approach Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Recently, we have used a projection operator to fix the number of particles in a second quantization approach in order to deal with the canonical ensemble. Having been applied earlier to handle various problems in nuclear physics that involve fixed particle numbers, the projector formalism was extended to grant access as well to quantum-statistical averages in condensed matter physics, such as particle densities and correlation functions. In this light, the occupation numbers of the subsequent single-particle energy eigenstates are key quantities to be examined. The goal of this paper is (1) to provide a sound extension of the projector formalism directly addressing the occupation numbers as well as the chemical potential, and (2) to demonstrate how the emerging problems related to numerical instability for fermions can be resolved to obtain the canonical statistical quantities for both fermions and bosons. Title Effect of halogenation on the electronic transport properties of aromatic and alkanethiolate molecules Type A1 Journal article
Year 2022 Publication (down) Physica. E: Low-dimensional systems and nanostructures Abbreviated Journal Physica E
Volume 144 Issue Pages 115428-6

Abstract Quantum transport calculations are conducted using nonequilibrium Green's functional formalism to study the effect of halogenation on the electronic transport properties of aromatic S-(C6H5)(2)X and alkanethiolate S-(CH2)(11)X molecules (with X = H, F, Cl, Br, or I) sandwiched between gold electrodes. In terms of conductance, both molecules show the same dependence on the halogen terminal groups despite their different electronic nature. For example, fluorination results in a reduction of the current by almost an order of magnitude, whereas iodine substitution leads to larger current as compared to the reference system (i.e. hydrogen termination). Regarding the asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristics, halogenation reduces the rectification level for the aromatic molecule with the smallest asymmetry for iodine termination. However, in the case of alkanethiolate molecule, halogen substitution increases the current rectification except for fluorination. A physical explanation of these results is obtained from the analysis of the behavior of the density of states, transmission spectra and transmission eigenstates. These findings are of practical importance in exploring the potential of halogenation for creating functional molecular self-assemblies on metallic substrates.

Abstract Dynamics of electron wave-packets is studied using the continuum Dirac model in a graphene geometric diode where the propagation of the wave packet is favored in certain direction due to the presence of geometric constraints. Clear rectification is obtained in the THz frequency range with the maximum rectification level of 3.25, which is in good agreement with recent experiments on graphene ballistic diodes. The rectification levels are considerably higher for systems with narrower channels. In this case, the wave packet transmission probabilities and rectification rate also strongly depend on the energy of the incident wave packet, as a result of the quantum nature of energy levels along such channels. These findings can be useful for fundamental understanding of the charge carrier dynamics in graphene geometry diodes.

Abstract We present an exact diagonalization study of negatively charged excitonic trions in two vertically coupled parabolic quantum dots. The electrons and the hole are confined to different dots. We obtain the energy spectra as a function of inter-dot separation and external magnetic field strength and identify different ground-state angular momentum transitions which are accompanied by abrupt charge redistributions in the dots. Abstract The multiband effective-mass model of cylindrical self-assembled quantum dots in a magnetic field normal to the layer of the quantum dots is presented. The strain distribution is computed by the valence force field method. The strain-dependent multiband Hamiltonian is modified into an axially symmetric form, which commutes with the total angular momentum F-2 = fh. where f denotes the total magnetic quantum number. The heavy hole and the light hole parts in the mixed hole state are resolved. It is found that the heavy hole component dominates in the ground states for both f = 1/2 and 3/2. The electronic structure exhibits numerous anticrossings between the hole levels. The Zeeman splitting between the +\f\ and -\f\ states is also computed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract The determination of the layer number ${\cal N}$ in nanoscale thin layered crystals is a challenging problem of technological relevance. In addition to innovative experimental techniques, a thorough knowledge of the underlying lattice dynamics is required. Starting from phenomenological atomic interaction potentials we have carried out an analytical study of the low-frequency optical phonon dispersions in layered crystals. At the gamma point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone the optical phonon frequencies correspond to rigid-plane shearing and compression modes. We have investigated graphene multilayers (GML) and hexagonal boron-nitride multilayers (BNML). The frequencies show a characteristic dependence on ${\cal N}$. The results which are represented in the form of fan diagrams are very similar for both materials. Due to charge neutrality within layers Coulomb forces play no role, only van der Waals forces between nearest neighbor layers are relevant. The theoretical results agree with recent low-frequency Raman results on rigid-layer modes [Tan et al., Nature Mater. 11, 294 (2012)] in GML and double-resonant Raman scattering data on rigid-layer compression modes [Herziger et al., Phys. Rev. B 85, 235447 (2012)] in GML. (C) 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Title Wave fronts and packets in 1D models of different meta-materials : graphene, left-handed media and transmission line Type A1 Journal article

Abstract A comparative study is made of the propagation of wave packets and fronts in three different meta-media, i.e. graphene, left-handed media (LHM) and transmission lines, using one-dimensional models. It is shown that a potential step in graphene influences only the frequency of the electronic wave, i.e., the particular spectrum branch (electron or hole) to which the wave belongs to, while the envelop function (the wave front or packet form) remains unchanged. Although the model for a vacuum and LHM interface is similar to that of the potential step in graphene, the solutions are quite different due to differences in the chirality of the waves. Comparing the propagation of wave fronts and packets in a standard transmission line and its meta-analog we demonstrate that the propagating packets in the meta-line are much more deformed as compared to the standard one, including broadening, asymmetry and even the appearance of fast moving precursors. This influence is seen not only in the case of packets with steep fronts but in soft Gaussian packets as well.
